1 March 2018 Issue: 29 Presidents Message Garry McMillan The days are getting longer, the sun is shining more and curling season ends in just over a month!! This year has been another great season for the Simcoe Club. We ve seen the men bring home a championship; we seen some positive changes, improvements and of course, experienced some challenges. The Simcoe Curling Clubs volunteers are outstanding and we are so grateful to have such a large pool of willing members to help out when called upon. In addition, we are fortunate to have such skilled people step forward and accept positions on the Board of Directors. This team comes together to take on the yearly operations of the club and continues to ensure a vibrant, active and fun environment for everyone. We are also very lucky to have outstanding staff including our Ice Technician, Secretary- Treasurer, Custodian and Bar Managers. Do you want to get involved? The Club's Board of Directors runs with a complement of 12 Directors - 9 elected and 3 appointed (from various leagues). We currently are short one (1) elected Director. Three (3) elected Directors have terms that expire in June If you have an interest in a role on the Board of Directors and would like more information, please contact Karen Casselton-Bower. Directors are not elected into specific roles. Rather a best fit is found once elected. Elections take place at the June 2018 AGM. Evening Ladies Draw 2 Winners Sponsors for Draw 2 were My Top Drawer and Royal LePage Brown Realty. Winners were: Baillie Adcock, representing Royal LePage Brown Realty; Angela Wiepjes (Skip), Linda Shaw (Vice), Guylaine Vassallo (Lead), Chris Cameron representing My Top Drawer. Absent from the photo is Sherry Schell (second).
2 Day Ladies Draw 2 Winners Sponsors for Draw 2 were The Barrel and Roulston s Pharmacy. Monday Winners: Marilyn Clendinning (Lead), Patti Brinker (Second), Barb Gulabsingh (Vice), Cathy Bird & Cathy Brown (Co-Skips). Monday Second Place: Carol Knack (Lead), Diane Thibodeau (Second), Linda Shaw (Vice), Karen Baskerville (Skip). Thursday Winners: Phyllis Veit (Vice), Margaret Bancroft (Skip). Absent: Barbara Gulabsingh (Second), Marjorie Casselton (Lead). Thursday Second Place: Pat Brubacher (Lead), Eileen Snider (Second), Linda Muir (Vice), Beth Redden (Skip). Open Curl The Board has approved ice preparation before Open Curling time. We encourage members to come out to practice. Open Curling will be from 9am to noon on March 3, 10, 24 and 31. Bonspiels Karen Casselton Bower Don't Siesta, Let's Fiesta Many thanks to the Summer's and Malo's for executing our February Funspiel. Also, a shout out to Magnolia Hospitality for the fabulous meals! We will need conveners for next year s event so please come forward early so we can ensure it is a success. Get Your Irish On! Two bonspiels in one - the Newbie Spiel and the Host/Guest will be held on the same date this year St. Patrick's Day, March 17th. Newbies will have their own separate morning and afternoon draws, and Host/Guest curlers will as well. So for newbies (<3 years experience) you can sign up as an individual and we will make the teams. For Host/Guest you can invite family & friends to make up your own team and join in the fun. Sign-up sheets are now up. Ryan has another themed menu for us. Cost $50 (or $25 curl or dinner only). Questions see Diane & George Cann (Newbie) or Deb & Doug Morrison (Host Guest).
3 Ontario Stick Curling Bonspiel This year s event is being held on March 18-22, 2018 at the Weston Golf and Country Club in Etobicoke. Eight teams will participate in a round robin format similar to past years. The Simcoe Curling Club will once again participate. The 2018 SCC team includes Bruce Jeffrey, Garry McMillan, Paul MacNeal and Mike Vrooman. As you may recall, in 2015 the Simcoe Curling Club won the Championship. Good luck to our Simcoe participants! Note: There is event brochure attached separately which contains teams and schedules. Competitive Bonspiel Survey Results Karen Casselton-Bower Over the past few years the current in-club competitive bonspiels, namely the Golden Garden Men s and the Golden Garden Mixed, have struggled attracting conveners and participants. In 2018, the Golden Garden Men s bonspiel was cancelled, as there were no volunteers to organize the bonspiel. Later on, the Golden Garden Mixed bonspiel was also cancelled, due to low registration. The cancellation of two formerly popular bonspiels affects many aspects of the club: lost bar revenues, lost catering revenues and the disruption of the Mixed Social League s schedule. A survey for competitive curlers was circulated to explore what competitive events members would support in the coming years. Many thanks go to Kayla Bower-Husul for compiling the results. Here is a brief overview: * 35 surveys returned - 34 completed as individuals, 1 completed as a team * 14 voted to rework the Golden Gardens events, 14 voted to retire the Golden Gardens events What are people were looking for? * Mixed or open event * 1 day * Scheduled in November or February * Prizes or cash bonspiel * Meals important, not themes, entertainment or home hosting * 3 year convener rotation schedule (like the Grand Mix) A few members came forward offering their assistance and expect we may have some new events to look forward to in the next curling season. However, if there is something you want to see and are willing to organize, please prepare a proposal for the Board by the end of March. The hope is to have our calendar ready by the end of April so we can begin promotion. Hard copies of the complete survey results are available in the bar area or contact Karen Casselton- Bower for an electronic copy.
4 Open Competitive League Finals Night Doug Woods Finals are being held on Monday April 2 nd. The teams will be piped on to the ice at 5:50 with all games beginning at 6:00 pm. The Club Championship (A Flight) finals as well as B, C and D finals will be held the same evening. Spectators are welcome and encouraged to attend. There will be a 50/50 draw plus a buffet dinner is available for only $20 per person. Dinner must be paid for in advance (no later than March 26 th ). Payment can be made to Patti Pepper. Look for the event flyer on the club tables and bulletin board! Ice Update George Anger A number of questions have been brought forward recently regarding our curling ice. E.g. The condition of our ice making equipment and curling rocks. We are attempting to give an overview of these issues in this article. Equipment: About 10 years ago we replaced most of the ice making equipment located in the compressor room located at the northwest corner of the curling building. This was done with the generous support of the Ontario Trillium Foundation. Normal expected life of this type of equipment is around 30 years. Therefore, we should be in good shape for a while. We did have to replace the brine pump earlier this season. This pump was not part of the ice making equipment replacement project. Curling Rocks Due to the foresight of the previous Boards of Directors, we are fortunate to own an excellent set of curling rocks. They have special inserts in the running surface that provide an optimum sliding surface. The striking bands on the rocks have recently been inspected by the experts at Canada Curling Stone and have been judged to be in good shape for years to come. A few years ago the club spent considerable funds to have the curling stones matched so that there is minimum variation in speed and curl of the stones on each sheet of ice. Ice Conditions For a good portion of this season, many of us have noticed problems with the speed of the ice. There are many variables that contribute to getting optimum speed and our ice team worked diligently at improving the ice quality. It was determined that our water conditioning equipment provided by a company called Jet Ice was not functioning properly and that the water used to make and pebble the ice was too acidic. Our team has worked with Jet Ice to correct this problem and so far the results are encouraging. The team will continue to monitor the water quality. On the weekend of February 17 & 18 the ice team performed a flood of the ice. This is normally done twice each season, primarily to level the ice surface after weeks of use. One of the immediate results is that the ice initially tends to have less curl. This was certainly the case right after the flood. Subsequently our Ice Technician textured the running surface of the rocks. This immediately returned significant curl to the rocks. Things should return to more normal conditions after a week or so.
5 Ladies 2-Day Invitational On Monday March 5 and Tuesday March 6, the SCC Ladies hosted our annual invitational. Fourteen (14) teams participated. This popular bonspiel brings clubs to Simcoe from Paris, Brant, Galt, Tillsonburg, Dundas Valley, Haldimand and Ilderton. Three teams from Simcoe also participated. As always, this event was a great success! The ladies enjoyed their time on the ice and during their free time, took advantage of the unique shopping in Norfolk County. Thanks to our 2018 convener, Patti Pepper and her team of volunteers. A tremendous amount of work goes into organizing this event and it is truly a team effort: from decorating the club, to sourcing and wrapping gift baskets, to securing sponsors, to arranging and serving delicious meals. Special thanks to Garry McMillan for providing his time and expertise as the official score keeper and to the sponsors who provide excellent prizes for our winners. 6 6 Sponsors Sponsors are a very important part of our clubs well-being. From a sponsor s perspective, they have limited and precious advertising budgets and invest in those activities/events where they will see the largest return on their investment. We have many new and long-standing, valuable sponsors. Please be sure to patronize their businesses wherever possible. If you visit one of our sponsors, be sure to thank them for their support.even if on some occasions you aren t able to take advantage of their services.
