AFC hosted Southeastern Regional Wheelchair Games for the 9 th year!! 2 Page 2 of 8 Aquatic Programs There were 1593 participants in the water exercise classes, 1896 lap swimmers, 1915 whirlpool users and 2110 therapy pool swimmers Swim Teams The Masters Swim team continues to practice Monday, Wednesday & Saturday GSMS team sent 14 swimmers to Nationals to represent our team Dolphins Swim Team held its first Inter Squad swim meet. One Dolphins tryout was held resulting in a registration for our Pre-Team Dolphins team practices M/T/W/Th/F Dolphins Swim Team competed in the Championship meet with 20 swimmers Dolphins Swim Team concluded practices for the 2016 GSSL April 29 th Swimming Lessons Saturday group lessons began another session with 79 kids & 8 adults enrolled April Events The Dizzy slide was on for our members & Dolphins two days with 29 sliders. A Community First Aid/CPR/AED class was held with seven registered. A kayak class was offered with 7 people enrolled NMB Beach Patrol will hold various clinics to ready the new guards and returning guards for the 2016 beach season. Maintenance on our water slide continues with in house painting being done Maintenance was completed on the therapy pool pump to repair a leak. May Events GSMS continues to practice Dolphins Pre-Team will begin with practices every Tuesday & Thursday Four stroke swim clinics will be held on consecutive Wednesdays during the month Kayak Class will be held May 22 The Special Needs class at Riverside Elementary will be enjoying the therapy pool NMB beach guards continue their practices & training for the upcoming beach season. Unfinished Business The Main Street dumpster and the one at Causey Boat Ramp have been approved for decorative painting. Many volunteers at Monday after the Masters were commended for the cleanliness of the course. A waterway cleanup, sponsored by boat captains, will be Saturday, April 16, 8 am-12 noon. Breakfast is served at 8 am. Those who do not want to go out on boats can clean the shore of the waterway. Long grabbers will be provided.
5 Page 5 of 8 New Business Dee is recruiting the volunteers for the KNMBB water stop on 9 th South and Hillside for the Diva Run on Sunday, May 1 st. The Litter Index will be taken on June 14 in lieu of the June Committee meeting. KNMBB will again help with supplies and materials for the House of Blues Earth Day program. Graphics on the KNMBB trailer will be stripped off and the trailer will be re-signed. An awning may be placed on the side of the trailer for protection from the weather during events. Discussion was held on being proactive in our fight against litter. It was decided to have banners made, to be placed at the Hwy 17 and Robert Edge Pkwy location and the old Hwy 17 and Sea Mountain location. Gerry will research banner designs to be presented to the Committee. Other Announcements Jay Beeson reported that storm drains at Main and Ocean Blvd, 2 nd North and Ocean Blvd, and 4 th South and Ocean Blvd will be tagged at the curbs, with the help of NMB High students. Jay informed the group that dumpsters are pulled regularly to have the bottoms replaced and to be painted. The dumpsters that are decoratively painted may be subject to this. We will wait to see if the painting is damaged during the replacement of the bottoms before deciding on a course of action. Recycle cans on the beach will be revisited at a later date. Next meeting is May 10 th, Commission at 3:00 pm and Committee at 4:00 pm. Monday After the Masters About 30 volunteers form KNMBB provided trash and recycle collection at the Monday after the Masters Golf Tournament. We also provide extra trash and recycle containers around the course. Waterway Cleanup The annual Waterway Cleanup was held on Saturday, April 16 th. There were over 70 volunteers attending this cleanup. Areas of the Waterway, Waites Island and the Cherry Grove Marsh were cleaned up. The event is organized by Patrick Kelly (Capt. Smiley) a local fishing charter service operator. Several of the local fishing boat Captains helped with the event. We also had a large number of high School Students attend the event. Earth Day 5k The Wellness Council for South Carolina held the Earth day 5k at barefoot Landing on April 23 rd. The 5k event attracted about 100 runners. The event was held in conjunction with the House of Blues Earth Day events and the Barefoot Landing Taste of the Coast activities.
6 Page 6 of 8 Athletics Baseball, softball, and spring soccer games have begun. There are 32 youth baseball teams and 10 youth softball teams for a total of 450 youth participating. The regular season began April 6 th with the traditional opening ceremonies with ceremonial first pitches being delivered by city council, the National Anthem performed by Grace Parker, and the prayer by the 9-10 year old Tigers coach/pastor Tom Holloway. The North Myrtle Beach Dixie Youth rec league night at the Myrtle Beach Pelicans was April 29 th ; 395 North Myrtle Beach recreation kids and parents attended the game at Pelican field. The teams had a pre-game parade around the field, Kirali Altena and Jackson Holloway threw out first pitches and the 9-10 Nationals were introduced alongside the Pelican players for the National Anthem. The spring soccer season has seen unprecedented participation with 20 teams and 220 participants. The teams practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The season began April 19 th at the North Myrtle Beach Park and Sports Complex. The spring adult softball season started practicing with games beginning in April. The senior 55 and over league started their spring season and they play on Thursday on Dick s Last Resort field 4, the men s league play Monday and Wednesday on Fuddruckers s Field 3 The Spring Soccer league began April 18 th and they play on field 1 & 2 in the Wild Wing Café soccer complex. Sports Tourism/Special Events April remained one of the busiest months for sports tourism, generating over 2 million dollars in economic impact, an increase of 14% from Events held: o Humane Society Doggie Run (Park and Sports Complex) 206 participants o USSSA Baseball (Park and Sports Complex) 15 teams o Easterns Collegiate Frisbee (Park and Sports Complex) 16 teams o Coast FA Soccer #1 (Park and Sports Complex) 85 teams o Coast FA Soccer #2 (Park and Sports Complex) 180 teams o World Fastpitch Connection (Park and Sports Complex) 12 teams o Paddle at the Beach Pickleball Tournament (JBFCC) 116 participants o Southeastern Wheelchair Sports (AFC/JBFCC) 27 participants
7 Page 7 of 8 Total economic impact generated in 2016 is $8,729,329, an increase of 13% from Special event workers prepared fields for events and assisted with SOS parade barricade set-up. Streaming at Park had over 62,000 views since January. Beach Services For the month of April Revenue is up $41,405 or 46% compared to prior year. Year to date Revenues are up 200, There were 12 significant weather interference days for the period most were cold related. Beach Service employment positions are posted for concession worker. Currently interviewing for concession worker positions. Approximately 80% staffed.
