1 Page 1 of 8 Parks and Recreation Department City Council Report City Council Meeting of November 21, 2011 Aquatic and Fitness Center Membership The membership statistics for the Aquatic and Fitness Center as of October 31, 2011 show 2155 membership packages representing 3636 individual members. This is an increase of 239 membership packages compared to October of Beginning in November, Brian Lowe, Athletic Trainer with the McLeod Sports Medicine will be offering free Injury clinics on Wednesdays from 7 am 12 pm. After extensive evaluation of building usage and membership requests, it was determined that beginning November 4 th, the AFC will close on Friday nights at 9 pm and will open on Saturday mornings at 7 am. In celebration of our 6 th Anniversary, AFC will waive the enrollment fee November and will host an Open House November 15 th Packages as of January Packages as of February Packages as of March Packages as of April Packages as of May Packages as of June Packages as of July Packages as of August Packages as of September Packages as of October Packages as of November Packages as of December Aquatic Programs 4163 swimmers participated for the month of October. This includes 1027 lap swimmers, 1947 recreational swimmers, and 1289 participants in water fitness classes.

2 Page 2 of 16 Swim Teams The AFC Dolphins swim team practicing M, W & F with 31 participants. The Grand Strand Masters Swim Team continues to practice Monday, Wednesday, & Saturday. North Myrtle Beach High School Swim Team concluded the 2011 season with their final practice on October 6 th The Masters Swim Team competed in the Dixie Zone Championships in Charlotte, NC October and took first place out of 27 teams representing 7 states. Swimming Lessons Session 1 Saturday lessons began on Sept. 17 th officially concluded on the 29 th, however, there is a make up date scheduled for 11/5 Tuesday-Thursday lessons began October 4 th with an Infant/Parent & Pre-SAchool/1class October Events AFC hosted North Myrtle Beach High School Region 3A & 4A swim meet October 1 st. Dolphin swim team hosted the Pumpkin Head swim meet October 22 nd. There were 7 teams with a total of 98 swimmers. Lane rental to Coastal Scuba 10/29 Lane rental to Grand Strand YMCA 10/11 and 10/20 25 swimmers from NMB schools special needs class swam October 20 November Events The Masters swim team will have an inter-squad meet 11/ 11 Dolphins swim team will participate in the Turkey Meet at Pepper Geddings on 11/19 The AFC will host the National Arthritis Foundation Water Walking event 11/5 Fitness Programs Land class participation: 2308 Class average: 13.5 October 2010 Land class participation: 2038 Class average: 12.7 Fitness Usage Total of 9,788 visits October 2010 total of 9,482 visits

3 Page 3 of 16 Child Watch Program Averaged 6 participants in the morning program Total visits Averaged 3 participants in the evening program Total - 64 visits Gymnasium totaled 10 children. Adult gym participation average was 13 with a total of 269 visits. There are 17 children for After School program Events Non- Member birthday party October 8 th -22 people in attendance. Parents Night Out October 7 th 18 kids registered. Customer Service Total Tours: 50 Number of In-State Tours: 35 Number of Out-of-State Tours: 15 Number that joined: 5 AFC Special Events The AFC hosted the Beach Blast Wheelchair basketball tournament at J. Bryan Floyd Community Center October 7-9. The AFC staff will participate in annual recertification training for CPR, First Aid, AED on November 8 th. The staff will participate in annual Bloodbourne Pathogens update training November 29 th SC State Powerlifting Championships November 5 Recreation Athletics Fall Sports Flag football, cheerleading, team tennis, soccer, fall baseball and fall softball leagues are beginning to wrap up. We have had a successful fall season. The all-star soccer teams will compete in the district tournament on November 19 th in Sumter, SC. Sports Tourism Held one AAU baseball tournament in October at Central Park. Hosted a Palmetto State Roller Derby on 10/22. We are hosting the final Roller Derby competition on December 3.

4 Page 4 of 16 In the process of securing an additional 2 years on our current USBA contract. This would ensure the USBA national championships are brought to NMB through Continued meeting with associations / organizations about the new park. We are hoping to begin negotiations with the different associations after we finalize the design for the new park. The goal is to have the 2014 tournament schedule completed a year in advance of the opening date. Attended the ASA National Conference which was held in Myrtle Beach. Adult Soccer Began an adult soccer league. Had over 30 participants for the first season. We are planning on offering a spring season as well, and hope to continue building the league. The new park will allow us to expand our adult sports programs to include adult softball, flag football and soccer. Basketball Registering for our winter basketball program. Coach Joe Lategano will be instructing our Rookie League (6 & Under participants) again this year. Some artwork is for sale (85/15). We ve sold one piece already! New Programs Rummikub Hand on a Box (Beth Robertson) Christmas Stockings and Ornaments (Beth Robertson) Environmental Weaving (Beth Robertson) Cornhole (Bud Preller) Djembe Drum Circle (Fiore Bergamasco) Baton Twirling (Susan Platt) Pom Pom Classes (Susan Platt) Musical Movement (Natalie Wayne) Rhythmic Gymnastics (Natalie Wayne) McLean movies begin 15 minutes after sunset. October 14 Rango (PG) 180 in attendance

Eco Tots: (NMB Primary School) had their first meeting of the year on Oct. 17 Eco-Kids: (NMB Intermediate School) met on Oct. 12 KAB Kids: (NMB Elementary School) met on Oct. 13 KAB Cadets: NMB Middle School as well as High School volunteers participated in the Beach Sweep and the Irish Italian Festival. Tree Huggers: (NMBHS) had a meeting on November 8 and Young Entrepreneurs (NMBHS) met Oct. 12. They will be collecting pop top tabs this year and everyone is encouraged to save them for this group. The tabs will benefit Ronald McDonald House. Irish / Italian / International Festival KNMBB did trash pick up and recycling at this festival. About 70 volunteers from NMB High School and NMB Middle School helped with the event. New Business The tree lighting ceremony is December 2 at McLean Park. Volunteers are needed beginning around 3:30 to assemble the luminaries and place them around the park. The Christmas parade is December 3. Youth groups will ride on the KNMBB float. The state Interact Club convention will be held at NMB High School on the weekend of March 10, with youth expected to attend. They would like to

7 Page 7 of 16 participate in a beach cleanup at this time. It was suggested that we give them some kind of remembrance from KNMBB. The Department of Public Works is promoting better water quality. Jay Beeson distributed magnets with water quality tips and encouraged members to give them out where needed. The next Committee meeting is November 8 at 4 PM, preceded by a Commission meeting at 3 PM. Volleyball Our youth volleyball program was in full swing in October. Games and practices are held on Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings. This program is for girls ages 9-12, the main focus is to introduce them to the basic skills of volleyball. The program will end on Saturday, November 5 th with awards given out after the final games. Parks and Public Grounds Scheduled Projects and Activities Beach Assist beach services in packing away Hippo Slide for winter Reset vandalized trash receptacle at 8 th north street end and trim overgrowth at 14 th north street end Recreation Soccer, flag football, fall baseball and tournament field preparation Repair scoreboards at Fields #1, #2 and #3 Logistical support for Howl O Scream Reinstall batting cage nets down since beginning of hurricane season Medians and Right of Ways Post emergency herbicide application to airport and Timber Ridge ditches, Cherry Grove intersection slopes and miscellaneous woody weeds 33 hazards eliminated in Windy Hill and Crescent beach at request of Crime Watch group, bus drivers and individual citizens Parks and Grounds Begin Winter annual flower planting Repaint Playground equipment at Hill Street Park, repairs to equipment at Central and McLean playgrounds Landscape renovations at McLean Park, Main Street medians, Drawbridge landscape, Johnny Causey Boat Ramp, Towers on the Grove Park, 21 st south street end and Cherry Grove Fire Station.
