1 Page 1 of 8 Parks and Recreation Department City Council Report City Council meeting of March 17, 2014 Aquatic and Fitness Center Membership The Aquatic and Fitness Center had a very busy February. Growth continues, as we ended the month with 2546 packages, up 38 packages from the same period in This is the first time the AFC had over 2500 packages for 2 months. The facility has been extremely busy with Winter Friends, new annual members and special events. 2 Page 2 of 8 Aquatic Programs There were 1923 participants in the water exercise classes, 1381 lap swimmers, whirlpool 1691 users and 1571 therapy pool swimmers Swim Teams The AFC Dolphins had 27 registered swimmers for the month of February. The AFC Dolphins had 15 swimmers participate in the Duathlon at the Myrtle Beach YMCA on February 22. The Masters Swim team continues to practice Monday, Wednesday, & Saturday with consistent numbers. GSMS hosted the SC SCY State Meet February 21 st, 22 nd, 23 rd with over 158 participants representing 17 teams from SC, NC, GA, VA, NY & Maine. The team placed 2 nd in the in-state division and overall in the meet. Two members of the team received high point awards in their age group. Swimming Lessons Winter Session Saturday lessons began February 1 st and continue through March 15 th with 29 swimmers enrolled in 6 classes. February Events The Dizzy Dolphin waterside was open for After School Swim February 7 th with 16 participants Jr. Guard began February 4 th with 16 enrolled Scuba Rental for Discover Scuba was held February 4 th, 8 th, 9 th with 12 participants Annual Maintenance was performed on the UV System February 11 th Staff Training for CPRPR/AED was held February 19 th with 30 participants Beach Lifeguards started their swim training February 1 st Three Pool Birthday Parties were held: one on February 8 th and two on February 15 th February 21 st was Parents Night out with 15 participants. March Events: March 8 th The Dolphins Swim Team will participate in the Shamrock Swim Meet at the Conway Recreational Center. AFO Certification will be held March 4 th and 5 th at City Hall with two participants from the Aquatic & Fitness Center and 23 total participants in the class. Pool Rental for kid s swim meet March 28 th - 30 Fitness Programs Land class participation: 3484 (Lower numbers due to poor weather) Class average: 18.5 February 2013 Land class participation: 3888 Class average: 20 Total orientations for the month: 63
3 Page 3 of 8 Group coaching classes are being offered P90X, TRX Steps to Your Health Child Watch & Activity Program Averaged 6 participants in the morning program Total 148 visits Averaged 8 participants in the evening program Total 152 visits Gymnasium totaled 10 children Adult gym participation average was 39, with a total of 429 adults in the gym for the month After School program averaged 33 participants 3 Birthday parties for non-member Coastal Stingrays wheelchair basketball team hosted the Carolina Wheelchair Basketball Conference championship February 28 - March 2 at the AFC AFC hosted a disability awareness week with staff working from a wheelchair. A Celebrity skills event and basketball game will take place on February 28 as a Kick-off to the Championship weekend. Great way to end a month of activities. Customer Service Total Tours: 84 Number of In-State Tours: 53 Number of Out-of-State Tours: 30 Recreation Athletics Sports Tourism Fastpitch Dreams college softball tournament began. 61 collegiate softball teams are participating this year. Games are being played at the NMB Park and Sports Complex and Central Park. The City was awarded the World Futbol Tour 3v3/6v6 World Cup. The tournament will consist of over 200 youth soccer teams. This event has been held in Charleston, Charlotte and Atlanta. Tournament organizers hope to make NMB their permanent home. All-stars were selected in the youth basketball teams. The 9/10, 11/12 and 13/14 boys teams participated in their district tournament. The 11/12 basketball team coached by Ryan Dunn won the Eastern District. It is the first time in the history of NMB that an allstar basketball team won district. The team will travel to compete in the state tournament. Spring soccer continued. Over 120 children are participating in the program. Baseball / Softball registration continued. To date, 460 children have registered for the leagues. That is an increase of over 40 kids. Registration has been extended for Senior softball leagues and the adult coed softball leagues.

Festival Area changed to Main Street from Cedar Avenue to Ocean Blvd. Mayfest on Main Saturday, May 10, 2014 NMB Park & Sports Complex Grand Opening/Community Day scheduled for April 12 th, 9am 2 pm National Trail Day scheduled for June 7 th, time TBD Beg ucation - The first Tuesday of each month educational gatherings of pets and their humans are led by local veterinary offices, dog trainers, and the NMB Humane Society. Treats for dogs and their escort will be available. Exercise and receive free tips from a pro. Begins March 4 th. KNMBB Wildflower, on Main Street, was chosen for the March Community Appearance Award, to be presented on Monday, March 3 at 10:00 am. Unfinished Business Ron, Rob, and Gregg attended the KAB National Conference in Charlotte. Ron summarized a workshop that involved youth as Associate Board Members and another that emphasized passion, persistence, patience, and his addition of pride when working to improve one s community. Rob talked about specific environmental problems, especially the problem of plastic pollution in the oceans. Dee, Silas, and Anne will attend the Litter Control Conference on Feb. 27. KNMBB will have a float in the St. Patrick s Day Parade on March 15. Volunteers are needed for Monday after the Masters on April 14 and for the Easter Egg Hunt on April 19. Volunteers are needed to man the booth at Mayfest on the 2 nd Sat. in May. There will be a National Trails day event at the new park in June. More information to come. New Business KNMBB will have a booth at Grand Opening / Community Day at the Sports Complex on April 12. Volunteers are needed.
5 Page 5 of 8 Beach Services Warehouse reorganized to start box repair March 3 rd. Beach Service employment positions are posted for concession worker as well as concession supervisor. Interviews are currently underway. Parks and Grounds Scheduled Projects and Activities Beach Routine dune, walkover and sign maintenance as reported by Public Works Renovate 47 th south street end in anticipation of new walkover construction Remove screening from handicap port-o-let locations for installation of new contractor port-o-lets Recreation Field preparations for spring soccer Medians and Right of Ways Ice storm cleanup (3 full days, 6 people plus overtime) Landscape renovation at Main Street Connector. Parks and Grounds Landscape renovation at City Hall begun (40% complete) Install trash cans, grills, picnic tables, scoreboards, bleachers, benches, and other site amenities at sports park Over seed sodded areas at sports park Pine straw natural areas and install fence screens at sports park (with assistance from beach services and recreation staff) Other Interview and hire FT and PT personnel. Contract construction of Maintenance building #2 at sports park, public works design of building #3 Sports Park lake depth sounding and bottom silt analysis Citizen s Academy presentation Interview and hire custodians for sports park Upcoming St. Patrick s Day Parade and Festival Walkover repair and maintenance

The park has been a buzz of walkers, joggers, bicyclist, dog owners, ball players, and playground participants. All have had very positive things to say about the parks and its amenities. We are still trying to tie up a few loose ends but all in all an enthusiastic and appreciative opening.
