1 WHO WE ARE Celebrating its 70th anniversary, Paralyzed Veterans of America (Paralyzed Veterans) was established by veterans who suffered devastating spinal cord injuries and could not find the support they needed. Paralyzed Veterans has worked tirelessly since then to provide access to the Care, Benefits and Jobs veterans need to transition back into civilian life. Today, Paralyzed Veterans serves 65,000 Veterans and advocates for better support on behalf of the 800,000 Americans living with spinal cord injury or disease. Paralyzed Veterans s mission is to create an America where all veterans and people with disabilities, and their families, have everything they need to live full and rewarding lives. To achieve that goal, Paralyzed Veterans s programs offer Medical Services such as hospital audits and clinical practice guideline creation, veterans benefits through a holistic, partner-for-life approach, vocational rehabilitation, architecture, research and education, adaptive sports and recreation, advocacy and more. ABOUT US The National Veterans Wheelchair Games (NVWG) is the largest annual wheelchair multi-sport and rehabilitation event in the world. The NVWG are open to U.S. military service veterans who use wheelchairs due to spinal cord injuries, certain neurological conditions, amputations or other mobility impairments. The NVWG are committed to fostering better physical and mental health for veterans with disabilities through sports competition. The NVWG are co-presented by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the Paralyzed Veterans annually. 600 athletes from around the country convene to compete in over 19 sporting events, such as basketball, quad rugby, power soccer, softball, swimming, bobsledding, weightlifting and more. MISSION CRITICAL Improve the quality of life for veterans with physical disabilities Promote greater independence and functional skills through wheelchair sports and recreation Provide education and training for clinicians specializing in treatment of spinal cord injury/disease, amputations, MS and neurological disorders. Initiate camaraderie by matching newly injured veterans with returning veteran athletes who have previously participated in the NVWG.
