2 Washington State SENIOR GAMES A special advertising supplement to The Olympian JACK KILEY President Washington State Senior Games President s Message elcome to the Games! Want to know one of my favorite reasons I give for attending the Senior Games? I tell people they might witness something spectacular, like a world record being broken. Now, to be honest, that doesn t happen very often at the state level. However, we do have many athletes who go on to national competition, and indeed some of them have established record performances in their chosen sports. Truly, if you want to witness something spectacular, come watch the living wonders, men and women in their 70s and 80s who jump, run, throw and climb or dribble, hit or kick a ball like they were still kids. We have folks in their 90s who continue to amaze everyone, including themselves, no doubt. For instance, last year our gold medal winner in the 100 Meter Dash, 50 to 54 age bracket, was Juan Teague from Auburn. He ran a mighty fine time of seconds. Now, he was only a tenth of a second faster than Charles Brocato, from Gig Harbor, who ran a The big difference and living wonder here was that Charles ran the 100 Meter not in the 50 to 54 group, but in the 65 to 69 age bracket, making him at least 11 years older, yet barely a step slower, than Juan. Those kinds of wonderful performances happen all the time in the Senior Games: 70-year-old basketball players sinking beautiful hook shots, cyclists in their 80s doing blazing times on the 40K road race, and men still hitting 7 seconds in the 50 Meter Dash and 11 feet in the Pole Vault event. This year we ll be honoring an historic event that remains a cherished memory for athletes in Washington State. Our annual Athletes Celebration Dinner on Saturday, July 26 will feature marathon runner Angela French and former Washington State Supreme Court Chief Justice Gerry Alexander presenting their recollections of the first-ever Olympic Marathon Trials, which took place in Olympia in Angela ran in the event. Gerry helped persuade the U.S. Olympic Committee to select Olympia over Buffalo, Kansas City, New York and Los Angeles. Together, their stories ought to make us feel proud as to what a small community can do. Our dinner costs only $15 and is open to the public. I hope you can attend. Let me say it once more, here in the South Sound we are blessed with a multitude of Living Wonders. It is my personal privilege to join with our board, all our sports commissioners and volunteers in presenting the Senior Games every year. This year we take special pride in honoring our senior athletes and the legacy of sports and athletics that have shaped the greater history of our capitol area. 3 A special advertising supplement to The Olympian 2014 Washington State SENIOR GAMES 3 Track-and-Field Stars Earn Awards FRANK GREEN EDYTHE HULET Power Walking, Trap Shooting new Sports for 2014 Games Two new sports, trap shooting and power walking, join dozens of other sports offered this year at the Washington State Senior Games. Overall, nearly 2,000 senior athletes will travel to the South Sound region throughout July and August to participate in the Games. Venues range from archery in Puyallup, to softball in Shelton, with most other sports in the Olympia-Lacey-Tumwater area. Power walking makes its debut as part of the main event track-and-field competitions at Tumwater High School on Saturday, July 26. Trap shooting debuts at the Evergreen Sportsmen s Club in Littlerock on July 14. As different as the two sports are, both are overseen by enthusiastic, detail-oriented sports commissioners. Edythe Hulet will organize and oversee the power walking competition, while Frank Green runs the trap shooting event. Power walking makes the perfect event for first-time Senior Games athletes, says Jack Kiley, President of the Washington State Senior Games. Power walking is simply walking as fast as you can, Kiley says. The only rule is that one foot must be on the ground at all times. Power walking commissioner Hulet agrees. This is a 1500-meter walk on a Saturday afternoon, Hulet says. That s approximately a mile. Power walking does not require equipment, coaches, or technique. The main difference between strolling and power walking is speed. As with all the Senior Games sports venues, the top three finishers receive gold, silver and bronze medals. Finishers in the top three spots also qualify for the 2015 National Senior Games, to be held in Minneapolis. To view all sports and their venue locations, go to washingtonstateseniorgames.com or call Fran Melzer, 74, and Eddie Ortiz, 66, will both receive the coveted Spirit of the Games Award at the Athletes Celebration Dinner on July 26. The two athletes, who once played on the same softball team before becoming eligible for the Senior Games, will also carry the lighted torch in the first-ever torch procession during the Senior Games Opening Ceremonies at Tumwater High School earlier that same morning. Melzer, who currently lives in Ohio, caring for her mother, recently earned 3 gold medals, one silver and one bronze OLYMPICS WEST 2x medal in the Ohio Senior Games. Her favorite sports to compete in are the long jump, high jump, 200 and 400 meter runs, and throwing the discus, javelin, hammer and weights. Melzer won the gold medal for the hammer throw in both the Cleveland and Palo Alto National Senior Games. In a senior track-and-field career cut short by back and knee injuries beginning in 2006, Ortiz earned several gold medals in the 100, 200 and 400 meter sprints, blazing his way to nine gold medals between the years 2001 to In true Senior Games fashion, he made a comeback from back surgery in 2008 to earn a fourth place in the shotput event. This year will mark his return to the 100 and 200 meter runs. Opening Ceremonies, Opening Ceremonies, including the torch procession, begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday, July 26. EDDIE ORTIZ including the torch procession, begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday, July 26. It is free to attend. The Athletes Celebration Dinner begins at 6 pm, same day, at the FRAN MELZER THRIVE FITNESS 2x Senior Center in downtown, Olympia. The public is invited to both events. Call to reserve your seat ($15) for the dinner.

6 Washington State SENIOR GAMES A special advertising supplement to The Olympian Marathon Meal Celebration Dinner Recounts 1984 Olympic Marathon Trials ANGELA FRENCH Thanks for helping us get over the top Every year the proud cities of Olympia, Lacey and Tumwater ensure that thousands of visiting athletes discover a Gold Medal experience while attending the Washington State Senior Games. We thank them, as well as our local leading businesses who support and sustain the largest gathering of senior athletes in Washington State. Tha n k s t o o u r g e n e rous supp ort e r s Athletes of all ages are invited to hear the true-life David and Goliath tale of how Olympia outshone cities like New York and Los Angeles to earn the right to host the first U.S. Olympic Marathon trials in To pitch Olympia s benefits, a delegation of area business, sports and political leaders flew to Philadelphia in 1982, bringing with them a high-tech multi-media presentation (three slide projectors) and equally important, several cases of Olympia beer. United States Senator Slade Gordon met the delegation, rehearsed his lines, and delivered an eloquent address to the U.S. Olympic Committee, persuading them to select Olympia as the site for our nation s first Olympic Marathon trials. The marathon trials took place on May 12, 1984, with two-time Boston Marathon winner Joan Benoit (Samuelson) taking first place before a crowd of 50,000 with a time of 2:31:04. She would go on to win the first Olympic Marathon in Los Angeles in September. Local runner Angela French also ran in the first women s trials, and she will share her memories of that historic event at the annual Athlete s Celebration Dinner on Saturday, July 26, beginning at 6 pm, at the Olympic Center, 222 Columbia Street, Olympia. French will be joined on stage by former Washington State Chief Justice Gerry Alexander, who helped make the historic Philadelphia pitch on behalf of Olympia. Gerry will share his thoughts and recollections on how an underdog team of presenters stole the show from the much larger Kansas City, Buffalo, New York and Los Angeles venues. Dinner will be served buffet-style by Ramblin Jacks, with a no-host bar for $15 per person. The public is invited but seating is limited, so please call early to reserve your place. 7 A special advertising supplement to The Olympian 2014 Washington State SENIOR GAMES 7 Volunteers sought Interested in sports or outdoors activities? Want to learn more about volleyball, pickleball, or some other sport in particular? Want to meet new people? Or simply like to volunteer? If so, Senior Games officials are seeking help with booths, equipment, scorekeeping, refreshments, greeting duties and similar positions for the weekends of July and August 1-3. Shifts can range from as little as 2 hours to 8 hours, starting at 8 am, with most sports finishing by 5 pm. Call and leave your contact information. We ll help you get connected the action and excitement of the Washington State Senior Games. Riding a $500,000 wave It is conservatively estimated that senior athletes and their traveling companions spend upwards of a half million dollars in the South Sound region throughout the 2-month duration of the Washington State Senior Games. Much of this influx goes directly to local dining, shopping and lodging establishments. Motels in Tumwater, Lacey, Olympia and Shelton, in particular, see their rooms fill to capacity. It is no small coincidence that the Olympia-Lacey- Tumwater Visitor and Convention Bureau (VCB) takes a great interest in the health and growth of the Games. George Sharp, its very active and influential executive director, has served for several years on the board of directors of the Washington State Senior Games. This year he will be participating in the trap shooting event for that sport s initial offering as a venue. We recommend our out-of-town athletes visit the VCB on Olympia s beautiful capitol campus. There s no better place to broaden your knowledge of what our region offers its visitors. In addition to maps and brochures, staff at the VCB will have plenty of restaurant referrals handy, as well as entertainment options for any taste and budget. Located at 103 Sid Snyder Avenue SW, visitor hours are 8 to 5 Monday through Friday, and 10 to 3 on Saturdays and Sundays. You may call them at or go online to their fun and informative website, Fountain of Youth discovered! Have you found your fountain of youth? BY DIANA T. YU MD, MSPH The more you can exercise and stay fit, the better your health outcome. Scientists have found that staying physically active and exercising regularly can help prevent or delay many diseases and disabilities. In some cases, exercise is an effective treatment for many chronic conditions. Regular, moderate physical activity can help manage stress and improve your mood. And, being active on a regular basis may help reduce feelings of depression. Studies also suggest that exercise can improve or maintain some aspects of cognitive function, such as your ability to shift quickly between tasks, plan an activity, and ignore irrelevant information. Well, I believe I have! Regardless of where you are starting from, increasing your ability to stay physically active is important to maintaining your youth. I take it as a complement when people think I am younger than I am (not just because I m goofy.) Combine that with my being young at heart I feel like I can be young forever. Well, there are parts of me that beg to differ, my knees, for instance. For other folks it is COLONIAL INN 2x2 their arms, or their back that seem to bother them most. After a good sit down discussion with your health care provider, you can come to an agreement on what you can do to strengthen your weaknesses and adapt exercises to keep you as fit as possible. Modifying exercises to your ability is important to prevent further injuries. Now if you have not yet started to have aches and pains, this is a great time to exercise properly to prevent injuries that may lead to chronic disability. Building strength, endurance and flexibility will be beneficial. Already using a walker or wheelchair, having trouble with your balance? This should not stop you from being more active. Do you start to wiggle or two-step when you hear music? Many modified exercise programs for older seniors take folks who need to be seated through good exercises you can do while sitting in a chair. So long as it gets your heart pumping harder than usual, you are getting some benefit from it. Always check with your doctor to make sure exercise is something they would prescribe for you. Folks who have trouble with balance or standing may benefit from swimming, or using a stationary bike. No matter what you are interested in, if you want to try it, for sustained health benefits, there is some activity out there that will get your heart pumping and your lungs working harder for 30 minutes a day is all it takes to find your fountain of youth. 8 Washington State SENIOR GAMES A special advertising supplement to The Olympian Get a grip climbing the walls Building on last year s success, the Warehouse Rock Gym in downtown, Olympia, welcomes seniors, their friends and family members for a second Senior Games rock climbing competition starting at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 25. Rock climbing offers unique challenges and new heights in excitement for seniors wishing to try something different, says rock climbing commissioner Gabrielle Shiosaki. You need some strength and coordination, Shiosaki says, but anyone can make a start at climbing. Rock climbing ranks high as a fun and accessible sport, mainly because climbers compete against the wall, learning and improving at their own pace. For beginners and experienced climbers alike, the Rock Gym staff and Games volunteers will help with belay ropes, harnesses and proper climbing techniques. For competition and medals, routes will be assigned points based on degree of difficulty, and climbers will compete against those in their same age bracket. If you ve never tried indoor rock climbing, you are GABRIELLE SHIOSAKI encouraged to show up and simply watch the excitement. You may register on site Friday and do your very first climb.
