2 Mission Curl BC is dedicated to the promotion and development of curling in British Columbia and to the coordination of curling activities on behalf of the member clubs. Purposes 1. To promote and develop the game of curling as a recreational and competitive sport in the province of British Columbia 2. To provide technical, marketing and other relevant assistance to member curling facilities in order to promote the sport of curling generally 3. To arrange and conduct playdowns and championships for the purpose of determining provincial championship teams Strategic Plan The Strategic Plan has been developed to leverage the impact of hosting the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games in BC. The challenge is to not only develop a dynamic plan to leverage this unparalleled promotion of curling and wheelchair curling in the province, but to ensure that the plan is implemented and evaluated. In order to do so, SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic< Tangible) goal statements have been created under the structure of the four pillars of the Canadian Sport Policy: Ehanced Performance. Enhanced Participation, Enhanced Capacity Building and Enhanced Interaction. 1 One House, Great Delivery

6 CAPACITY BUILDING Curl BC will provide leadership to ensure the availability of curling facilities and programs through strong governance and operational excellence. Governance & human resources After an eight month leave, Curl BC welcomed back former part-time employee, Robbie Gallaugher to a full-time position as Communications & Administration Coordinator. Robbie replaced Leslie Howe who left her position in late July. Unfortunately, due to government funding cuts that occurred in the fall, Sharon Delver-Morrison s contract as Co-Provincial Coach was not renewed. Curl BC is appreciative of Sharon s contribution to curling over the past years that has enabled her to positively impact many BC curlers. Congratulations to the rest of the staff of Scott Braley, CEO & Executive Director; Melissa Soligo, Provincial Coach; Penny Bartel, Participation Manager; Heather Beatty, Technical & Education Coordinator; Al Moore & Kevin Rouck, Regional Coaches; and Richard Brower, Bookkeeper for their hard work during the eventful past season. Curl BC would also like to Dan Bradley (UBC intern) for his help in the office last fall. A preliminary orientation on Carver s Governance Model has been completed and 1st & 2nd level Ends statements have been approved by the board. Curl BC policies have been revised where necessary and a draft Policy Registry has been created with the first four Board Governance processes being approved. These resulted in the formation of Curl BC Performance, Participation and Capacity Building & Interaction committees. Internal communications & marketing The Curling Connection was given a new look this season. This monthly electronic newsletter is currently being distributed directly from Curl BC to over 2,600 unique addresses, in addition to club managers who forward it onto their club membership lists. A Members Only login page was also added to the Curl BC website. Finance & revenue generation Please refer to the 2009/2010 Curl BC Finance Report under separate cover. Facilities Government infrastructure grants were put on hold over the past year, but several clubs reaped the benefits of previous applications including Peace Arch and Cloverdale. Education Thanks to Karen Watson, Coach Development Manager; Dianne Barker, Provincial Officiating Coordinator; BJ Gagnon, Provincial Ice Technician; and our Learning Facilitators & Course Conductors for their commitment this season. 7 INTERACTION Curl BC will actively engage with government, philanthropic organizations and the general public to raise awareness and generate interest in curling as a healthy, fun, lifetime activity for everyone. Government The Provincial Government decided to revise its whole approach to funding amateur sport this past year and Curl BC is waiting the outcome of this review.a great disappointment for both Curl BC and its clubs during the year was the denial of Direct Access (Gaming) funding for the first time. These grants are expected to be at least partially re-installed for the 2010/11 season. Philanthropic Curl BC organized two fundraisers this season. The first was the Kenzen Long Shot Contest where participants attempted to throw a curling rock as far as they could without any backboard to stop it. The Richmond Olympic Oval was converted into curling ice for one day only which was over three times the length of a regular sheet of curling ice. The top three finishers in eight different categories were given prizes and each first place winner will have their names placed on a plaque in the BC Sports Hall of Fame. The second fundraiser was the Duncaby Fishing Raffle held in the spring won by Chilliwack s Wayne McAlpine. The raffle raised over $3,900 for junior and wheelchair curling. Corporate Canadian Direct Insurance renewed their three-year sponsorship agreement as the title sponsor of the BC Men s Curling Championship. Best Western also renewed their agreement as the Presenting Sponor of the BC Women s Curling Championship. Kenzen (Sato Canada), Duncanby Lodge & Jet Ice were new sponsors this season, providing siginificant contra-sponsorship. Other Curl BC sponsors include Kruger, Williams Moving & Storage, Merit Travel and The Pin People. Inclusion Curl BC partnered with the Canadian Paralympic Committee and Sport Canada this season to promote adaptive curling during the Paralympic Winter Games. External communications & marketing Many improvements were made to the Curl BC website this year to provide easier navigation and better service to visitors. Website traffic increased by 31% from the 2008/09 season. A page containing links to curling articles published in BC newspapers was also added and contains over 300 stories. Curl BC also engaged in social media this season by creating Facebook &YouTube accounts. Secondary & post secondary institution curling BC School Sports Curling Commission joined Curl BC as an associate member for next season. 6 One House, Great Delivery
