2 WELCOME TO RENO More than 3,000 athletes are expected to compete at this year s USATF National Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships in Reno, Nevada on December 12. The organizing hosts, including USATF Pacific, Washoe County Parks & Recreation & the Reno Tahoe Winter Games Coalition look forward to welcoming you to the Reno-Tahoe area for what will be a great National Junior Olympic experience. USATF s Junior Olympic cross country program is made up of developmental meets in many of USATF s 57 local Associations, which lead to Association Championships, and then to 15 Regional Championships. Athletes are required to submit an entry form only at the first level of competition, as advancement is based upon performance (i.e., an athlete cannot directly submit an entry form for the Regional competition; he/she must have competed and advanced at the Association meet). See USATF Competition Rule for specific rules on qualifying for the National Championships. Generally, the first 20 individual finishers and first three teams in each age division at the Regional Championships will qualify for the National Championships. Athletes and teams from some Associations will qualify directly from their Association Championships as follows: top 10 individuals and 1st team in each age division. Contact your local association or regional meet director to learn more about how to qualify for the National Championships, or visit the Junior Olympic Cross Country website page. Participant numbers are fixed and no alternate athletes may advance if qualifying athletes or teams choose not to enter the National Championships National Junior Olympic XC Championships

4 Entry Forms and Fees The non-refundable entry fee is $20 per individual and must be submitted with the individual's entry form through the athlete's USATF Regional Coordinator at the Junior Olympic Regional Championship meet. Entries cannot be accepted by any other method. Regional Coordinators will verify all entries for completeness and accuracy, including age verification. Entry forms not meeting all of the requirements will be deemed incomplete and will only be processed after all the missing information is provided and an incomplete-entry fee of $10 is paid at packet pick-up. Late entries will not be accepted for this competition. Packet Pick Up Date Times Location Thursday, Dec. 10, :00pm - 9:00pm Silver Legacy Hotel Friday, Dec.11, :00am - 10:00pm Reno Ballroom Saturday, Dec. 12, :00am - 11:00am Rancho San Rafael Bib Numbers, Hip Numbers and Chip Timing Each athlete will be assigned a bib number, two hip numbers, and a data tag at packet pick-up. Athletes in all races will be required to wear all of these identifiers to ensure the races are properly scored. Athletes must wear the bib numbers, hip numbers and data tag assigned to them. If any of these are lost or forgotten, replacements can be supplied at packet pickup or at the clerk's tent on the day of the race for a fee. The bib number must be worn on the front of the athlete's outer layer of race clothing and cannot be folded or altered in any way. Each number will have a pull tab at the bottom. Do not remove the pull tab on the bottom of the bib or put safety pins through the tab. The hip numbers should also be worn on the athlete s outer layer of clothing. The data tag should be affixed to one of the athlete s shoes. Athletes must return the data tag to the event organizers in the finish line area immediately following their race. Unreturned data tags will incur a charge of $25. A commemorative event medallion will be given to each athlete who returns their data tag. Awards Individual awards will be given to the top 25 athletes in each event. Team awards will be given to the top 3 teams in each age division. The awards ceremony will be held on Saturday, December 12 at 7:00pm at the new Reno Ballroom. Check-In All athletes must report to the staging area 30 minutes before the start of their races; only competing athletes are allowed in this area. Please observe all areas that are roped off and please obey all course monitor directions. Individuals and teams will have designated starting positions. Warm- Up and Staging Areas The staging area will provide plenty of space for athlete warm-up and will be clearly designated with signs. Additional warm-up grassy areas will be just west of the finish line National Junior Olympic XC Championships

5 Starting Positions Positions will be assigned randomly and will vary for each race. Clerks will be assigned to each starting box. In the event of any position changes, teams and individuals are expected to follow the directions given by the clerks or other USATF or meet personnel. Uniforms Each competitor on a qualifying team must have a jersey or singlet that is basically identical in color and style to those worn by his/her teammates. The team jersey must be clearly visible throughout the race. This means the team jersey should be worn as the outside layer of clothing if other garments are worn during the race. Athletes who are unattached or who compete for a team not in team competition may wear any apparel as long as it is safe, not offensive, and has the athlete's bib number attached to the outside layer. Protests A protest site will be set-up at the meet venue. Protests relating to matters which develop during the conduct of the competition must be made to the Referee at once and not later than 24 hours after a result has been announced. The fee to file a protest is $100. This fee will be returned if the protest is upheld. Please note USATF Rule when considering the use of video /photo footage for protests. GENERAL INFORMATION Facility & Course Details The venue at Rancho San Rafael Park in Reno is already renowned for its superb cross country course. For 2009 the course has been revised to make it even better! The loop courses will maximize spectator viewing points and ease of spectator access. For the athletes there are many hills and valleys and most of the racing surfaces will be either grass, decomposed granite, or ground-up rock. The start and finish are within 200 meters of each other, and the course loops back near the start for easy viewing of the races. Opening Ceremonies The Opening Ceremonies will be held at the new Reno Ballroom, one block from the Silver Legacy Hotel, on Friday, Dec. 11 at 7:30pm. Event Merchandise Specially designed 2009 Cross Country Championship event merchandise, including long and short-sleeved t-shirts, sweat-shirts, hats, pins, and other athletic apparel souvenirs will be on sale during packet pick-up, the competition, and the awards ceremony. Photographer Action Sports Images will serve as the LOC photographer and will be taking individual and team photos throughout the JOXC Championships weekend. Action photos of individuals will be taken during each race and team photos will be taken at the awards ceremony. Information on purchasing photographs will be available on-site or on the Action Sports Images website following the conclusion of the event. Team Tent Area A specific area for team tents will be designated in proximity to the start/finish area National Junior Olympic XC Championships

6 Spectator Areas The course provides many excellent viewing opportunities without the need to cross into the course itself. It is a closed course, so parents, coaches, amateur photographers and spectators are not allowed to cross the course at any time and must stay within the boundaries of designated spectator areas. The course will be closed at 9am on Saturday December 12 to everyone except meet officials, course marshals, official meet photographers, and competitors of each event as called by the meet announcer. First Aid A medical tent, doctors, nurses, EMS, and an ambulance vehicle will be on-site. The expert staff will ensure a safe and protected environment. Weather Conditions During early December, Northern Nevada may have snow in the surrounding mountains but little, if any, on the valley floor of the Reno-Sparks area. Temperatures range from a high of 48 degrees to a low of 21. There can be plenty of sunshine, so bring your sun block and use it. When Reno hosted the national races in 1988, 1994, and 2000, it was sunny and 55 degrees, perfect weather for running. Parking Ample parking is available at Rancho San Rafael. A special lot will be set aside for buses and RV s at the park. If weather is inclement, there is additional paved parking 1/2 mile from the venue; shuttle service will be provided to and from this location. Shuttle Bus Service A free shuttle bus will make regular trips to and from the Silver Legacy Hotel and the race venue. The Silver Legacy shuttle stop is located on 5 th St. between N. Virginia and N. Center St. ADA Accommodations USA Track & Field has specific procedures to be followed by disabled athletes wishing to compete in able-bodied competitions against able-bodied Athletics athletes. Please note that the disabled athlete must first meet the eligibility requirements applicable to the relevant competition, including having achieved the required qualifying standard, if any. The disabled athlete is responsible for initiating the ADA Accommodation Request procedures sufficiently in advance to enable USATF to complete its review and decision-making process prior to the relevant competition. Please visit for more information. Awards Ceremony Awards will be presented beginning at 7pm on Saturday evening at the new Reno Ballroom, one block from the Silver Legacy Hotel. The top 25 finishers in each division will each be presented with a medal. The top three teams in each division will each be awarded individual medals and a team plaque. The awards ceremony will begin with the oldest age division and end with the youngest (i.e. Young men/women to bantam). Post Event Dance Following the awards ceremony the festivities will continue with a dance in the Reno Ballroom from 8:30pm -11:00pm. Results Results for each race will be posted on designated boards in specified locations at the meet venue and online at National Junior Olympic XC Championships

8 Rental Cars Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO) provides convenient access to eight different rental car agencies. All eight rental car counters are located in Baggage Claim. A complimentary shuttle service to their location can be met just outside the D Doors located North of Baggage Claim. 10 Area Attractions The Reno-Lake Tahoe area has something for everyone! Plan to come early or stay late and enjoy the area. For the parents and coaches there s Reno s famous nightlife, and throughout the city are entertainment opportunities for the whole family. A new movie theater complex is located on the river just a few blocks from the host hotels, and Reno has great food at reasonable prices. Other attractions include Harrah s National Automobile Museum, The Wilbur May Museum at Rancho San Rafael Park, and The Fleischmann Planetarium at the University of Nevada just across the street from the race site and open to the public. Twenty miles north of Reno on the Pyramid Highway is the Palomino Valley Wild Mustang Adoption Center. Beautiful Lake Tahoe is only 43 miles away and the historic mining town of Virginia City is a short 26-mile drive. Within an hour s drive you can find the best skiing in the world. Of course, the race venue, Rancho San Rafael Regional Park, and the race itself, are the main attractions!
