1 FOUR DEAD Official Newsletter of the Idaho Horseshoe Pitcher s Association Volume XXVII, #3 Fall 2016 President s Message Well, another year has passed and many shoes were thrown, and we need to ask ourselves if we accomplished what we set out to do this season. I did not get my goal of pitching a 30% tournament, but I was close and feel confident in what I did this year in staying consistent and throwing the same shoe each time. But the best part of pitching horseshoes is the people I associate with and the friendships I make and keep. Thank you to all who are part of my horseshoe family and who make this sport a joy to participate in. Melanie and I had a great time in Montgomery, AL and pitching in 2016 World Tournament. Melanie took 5th and I took 6th in our classes. We had a great time seeing the historical sites and renewing and making new friendships. (see our WT photos) I hope all of our groups are working on their schedule for 2017 that will be published in the spring issue. You could help us out by giving Carol your address so that we can keep our printing and mailing costs to a minimum. That way we can use those funds to help promote our sport. Here are a few announcements for this coming year: If you need your 2017 card, send the Membership Form to Carol or contact her at idkegler@aol.com and she can get your info and payment and send a card to you. Idaho State Doubles will be in Pocatello, but I am still working on the date around a few conflicts that I have. Please let me know which date you would prefer for Doubles: July 1, July 29, or August 5? I am leaning toward July 29. NHPA World Tournament is in St. George, UT July 17-29, Entry deadline is May 15, Remember you need 4 tournaments to be eligible to pitch at the World Tournament. Make your plans now to attend. Here is the link to the World Tournament entry form: Idaho State Singles will be in beautiful Coeur d Alene (CDA), Idaho, August 26-27, 2017 at Winton Park. We are planning on the same format as in past years. Please register by 8 pm on August 24 so that we can get the classes set up. We will have a Friday night tournament for all who show up by 6 pm. We will make it 4 person mixed classes for a fast three-game tournament. If you have any questions for the CDA club, contact Glen or Darla. Just a reminder that we voted on not mailing out paper copies of the newsletter, so if you know someone who wants to read it, please help them by sharing to their or giving them a copy. In the spring a mailing that includes the ISHPA Tournament schedule will go to all members. Thanks again for all you do to help grow this sport in Idaho. Have a great holiday season, and I hope 2017 finds you healthy, happy, and pitching many ringers! Brian J Poole, ISHPA President bjpoole3564@gmail.com

2 Dollars and Sense As another year of great horseshoe pitching comes to a close, a promising new year is just around the corner. Our number of members keeps going down. We all need to be thinking of ways to get new players involved in this great sport. The World Tournament is real close for 2017, it will be in St. George, Utah. Pep and I went to St. George in 2013 when they hosted the World Tournament. Everyone was so nice there. We are going back in The 2017 State Singles Tournament is going to be in Coeur d'alene. It is a beautiful place to go, with lots to do there. I have the membership cards for 2017 and all you need to do is send me $25.00 along with the membership form that s included in this newsletter. I will mail back your new card. Let s all try to get one new player for the new year. Please remember to include your address on your membership form. After this issue, we will no longer be mailing newsletters; newsletters will be ed in PDF format to those members for whom we have addresses. Our newsletters are posted to our ISHPA web site, so even if you do not have an address but you can access the Internet, the newsletters can be read there. Wishing all of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Carol Plummer, ISHPA Secretary/Treasurer idkegler@aol.com

3 Hall of Fame Report The 2016 state tournament that was held in Pocatello and hosted by the Pocatello club went well this year. There were three past ISHPA members inducted into our Hall of Fame. Three people made presentations for each of the individuals. David Spears did the first presentation for long time member Nick Piva who passed away last December. Nick loved the game of horseshoes, enjoyed sharing it with others, and promoted the game very much wherever he went, especially in his home town of Challis, Idaho. Nick also won 3 Elders State Championship titles. The award presented was for Nick's tireless promotion of the game and his pitching abilities. Janette Piva accepted the award on behalf of Nick. Nanette Spangler made the presentation for Bobby Faulkner who passed away a few years ago. Bobby had a passion for the game, not just for his pitching, but mainly for his tireless efforts in promoting the game. His efforts paid off by accomplishing one of his main goals of getting and hosting the 2004 World Tournament in Pocatello. Bobby was inducted for his leadership, promotional, and organizational efforts throughout many years. Angie Faulkner accepted the award on behalf of Bobby. Our third inductee was Bob Zausch of Pocatello whose presentation was given by his grandson Jeff Zausch, a former junior pitcher. Jeff's speech was presented well and exposed many shared memories. Bob was inducted for his promotional, organizational, and leadership abilities of the game throughout his years involved in the sport. The award was accepted by Bob himself. I would also like to thank Nanette Spangler and Jeff Zausch for their efforts in making the Hall of Fame presentations successful. 4 Pep Talk Corner My Pep Talk (well not so much this time), I left off in my summer issue article with a coming "events" of Winners vs Losers. But, it wouldn't serve its purpose here now. We've long ended our pitching schedule, so I'll save the article for next year. So in the meantime, enjoy the holidays and a new coming prosperous new year. Stay safe, happy, and healthy. Merry Christmas to all. And a Happy New Year. Pep Plummer, Regional Director idkegler@aol.com State Singles Tournament Congratulations to the 2016 State Champions! 5 Minutes of Annual State Meeting On August 27, 2016 in Pocatello, Idaho President Brian Poole called the annual State Meeting to order at 1:55 PM. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited followed by a moment of silence for all recently passed Idaho players and for our service men/women serving in our military. The minutes of the 2015 Annual Meeting were published the fall issue of Four Dead and were not read. Copies were available for those that wanted them. A motion was made by Bob Zausch and seconded by Denise Freier that we accept the minutes as written. Motion carried. The financial report was presented and explained by Secretary/Treasurer Carol Plummer. She reported that end of year (EOY) balance stood at $1, The slight increase in the EOY balance reflects the lower costs of publishing the Four Dead newsletter. A motion was made by Melanie Poole and seconded by Brent Wood that the financial report be accepted as written. Motion carried. Reports from Officers: 1 st VP Glen Wessel spoke about next year s State Singles Tournament and encouraged everyone to come to Coeur d Alene. 2 nd VP Brent wood spoke of the new members in his area and welcomed them. He encouraged everyone to work on increasing our membership. Statistician and NHPA 3 rd VP Jerry Smith talked about medical exemptions and how the State Charter must approve the exemption before sent to NHPA for approval. It was agreed that we follow this procedure. He stated that the World Tournament (WT) in Montgomery went very well, that the 2018 WT would be in South Carolina, and to remember that next year it is back in St. George, Utah. President Poole spoke about the By-laws amendment ballot form results concerning the motion to change the requirement for participation in the State Tournament from two events to four events. 35 votes were received and verified as current member votes. The tally was 20 votes no and 15 votes yes, so the motion failed. He also reminded people that four events are needed to participate in the World Tournament. Old Business: Website maintenance fees: Motion was made by Jerry Smith to pay the webmaster, Steve Summerlin, $50.00, Brent Wood seconded, motion carried. The Newsletter: The Four Dead newsletter was discussed, and it was suggested that we should stop snail mailing it out and only use . Jerry Smith made a motion to End the printed and mailed version of the Idaho newsletter with one more issue (Fall 2016) and only send out versions. Also, that each Spring a simple letter be mailed out to all members with the coming pitching schedule and possibly applications for the World and /or State tournament. Denise Freier seconded, motion carried. New Business: David Spears talked about a website called Meetup.com that is designed for people to put activities on for all to see. David said he was going to pay the $10.00 per month to join and put our horseshoe pitching activities on it to see if the site could help our efforts to recruit new members. No action taken. Brian Poole reminded everyone to get their 2017 schedules in by February. The State Tournament entry fee was discussed. A motion was made by Teresa Brown and seconded by Glen Wessel to keep the State Tournament entry fee at twenty ($20.00). Motion carried. Jerry Smith made a motion to give the Idaho State Doubles Tournament to Pocatello. Rick Sprague seconded. Motion carried. It will be run by Brian Poole and be scheduled sometime after July 4 th. The 2017 State Tournament will be held in Coeur d Alene per the rotating schedule set forth in our By- Laws. Coeur d Alene was represented as required and set the date for the week before Labor Day. Gary Kollmann asked if we could get a motel near the site of the tournament to give a special rate during state for all pitchers. Glen Wessel said he would look into it for the next state tournament. Election of Officers: Danny Rollins made a motion that Brian Poole continues as President, it was seconded by Stu Brown. Art Ross moved to close nominations, which was seconded by Jerry Smith. Motion carried. Brian was elected by acclamation. A motion was made by Teresa Brown and seconded by Karen Wickham that Brent Wood continues as our 2 nd Vice President. 10 MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION Idaho State Horseshoe Pitchers Association National Horseshoe Pitchers Association The NHPA card is a combination membership of the state and the national horseshoe pitching associations. This card entitles you to participate in NHPA sanctioned play throughout the United States and much of Canada, where ever you meet the requirements of the event. You must pay your dues through the state charter where you maintain legal residence as determined by voting, taxes, and/or drive s license laws. Dues are based on the calendar year. New Members may pay next year s dues after Oct. 1st of the current year and will be eligible to participate in sanctioned events for the final 3 months of the current year, as well as all of the next year. As a member of the Idaho Charter, you will receive newsletters and a schedule of all sanctioned and some non-sanctioned tournaments for the state. Your pitching stats from all sanctioned events will be forwarded to the NHPA stats headquarters called NatStats. These stats are updated weekly and can be accessed through the NHPA website. To make all this possible, your NHPA card will have six digits followed by two decimals. Idaho is region 08, followed by four digits, which is your membership number. The two decimals represent the calendar year. The decimal and color of the NHPA card change each year. Your membership number will remain with you as long as you reside in Idaho and continue to maintain your membership. If you ever lose your NHPA card, the charter secretary will issue you a duplicate card free of charge. You need only notify the Sec./Treas. Please fill in all information on the form below that applies to you and mail along with total amount of dues to the ISHPA Sec./Treas.
