1 FOUR DEAD Official Newsletter of the Idaho Horseshoe Pitcher s Association Volume XXV, #3 Fall/Winter 2014 President s Message Happy Holidays and Season s Greetings to all! I wish the best to everyone through the Holiday Season and wish all a Happy and Eventful New Year! I know that most of us have put the horseshoes on the shelf and are taking a break due to the cold weather in Idaho. Well, that doesn't mean that we have to stop working to promote horseshoes. Let s make sure that we are getting involved and doing what we can to build our local clubs and bringing our Association the attention that it deserves. There are resources available through the NHPA website and Officers Tina Hawkins & Casey Sluys. We all need to be working on our 2015 tournament dates and getting our clubs organized to run smoothly this next year. I hope everyone will get their s to Kay in order to get signed up with NHPA to start receiving the free, electronic Newsline that will be coming in January, I also have started an Idaho Horse Pitching Association Facebook page to help us to stay connected and to get information out that promotes horseshoe pitching. Check it out! Again, thanks to all who are helping in their clubs to make this such a wonderful sport. Brian J Poole, ISHPA President bjpoole3564@gmail.com Secretary Sez The final membership for ISHPA ended the year of 2014 with 121 members. This is a decrease of 3 from last year. Once again we need to stay busy in our attempt to increase membership. Get out and encourage friends and neighbors to join the fun. Don't forget those pitchers who were previous members and have strayed away. This year s election of officers included the positions of President and Second Vice President. Both of the incumbents were returned to office, namely, Brian Poole as President and Brent Wood as Second VP. The 2015 State Singles Tournament will be held in Meridian probably the week before Labor Day (not confirmed). The 2015 cards ($25.00) are ready for delivery if anyone needs their cards for winter pitching. I was appointed the NHPA's Third Vice President and will be involved with the Sanctioned Club/League program. If you have any questions about forming a NHPA Sanctioned League or any other national type of question, please feel free to contact me. Jerry D. Smith, ISHPA Secretary-Treasurer 2850 S. Benecia Way Nampa, ID horseshoepitcherjds@msn.com
2 Regional Director/HOF As we wrap up the 2014 Pitching season there are a few things that I would like to mention as your Regional Director and Hall of Fame Chairperson. On the Regional Director side of things, I will be looking for possibly two people throughout the state to act as an ARD (Assistant Regional Director). The purpose of this position is to help me to sanction courts throughout different parts of the state and to stay in touch with tournament directors or facility coordinators for the courts that are utilized in the running of sanctioned tournaments and ensuring the courts are in good shape for sanctioned events throughout the season. Areas of interest are the eastern portion of the state (Pocatello/Idaho Falls or even Sun Valley area people). This is a nonpaying position (volunteer only). One thing to mention on that side of things is that if any complex is in dire need of upgrading (such as extended platforms, backboards, and such) the NHPA has a grant program that provides monies to clubs throughout the US to help them out financially. I personally have been a recipient, as has Jerry Smith of Nampa. Grants are always a good thing, and to my knowledge anyone that has applied for one has never been turned down. Hall of Fame Report On the Hall of Fame side of things, three people were inducted into the Hall of Fame at the State Singles tournament this year in Coeur d'alene. The inductees were the following: 1. Jim Kosterman, Idaho's first Secretary/Treasurer of Boise from 1952 thru He was one of the key people to get Idaho formed as an association in 1952, and in 1958 Jim spearheaded the effort for Idaho to become a charter under the NHPA. The Julia Davis Park courts in Boise that were constructed in the early 50s were also spearheaded by Jim. 2. Clarence Cummins, originally from California who moved to St. Maries in the early seventies and won six men s state titles in the 1970s. 3. Elmer Currie, from Coeur d'alene, was a key person for promoting and organizing horseshoes in the northern part of the state, and he is still with us at the age of 94. Elmer's family helped me out with vital information to allow the decision to be made to induct him into the Hall of Fame. Both Jim and Clarence are deceased. Elmer Currie and Dave Spears The next HOF induction will be at the 2016 State Singles Tournament in Pocatello. Dave Spears Idaho Regional Director Idaho HOF Chairperson dspears1953@gmail.com State Singles Tournament The Idaho State Singles Championship was held on August 23rd and 24th in Coeur d'alene. Pam Thornburg % My First State Tournament By Wayne Peterson I have pitched horseshoes for over 50 years, only the last two in any organized fashion. My initial move into organized horseshoes was joining the Moscow Parks and Recreation singles and doubles leagues two years ago. What a difference! The pits were a far cry from the stakes pounded into the beach I was used to. Even the horseshoes were different. They came in a myriad shapes intended for different styles of pitching. I had only known the sporting goods store varieties. Kay Keskinen persuaded me to join the ISHPA and enter some tournaments in Coeur d'alene where I met more horseshoe pitchers, great people by the way, and had varying degrees of success due to my inconsistent performance. By the time the 2014 State Tournament was coming up I had managed to make it to C class. At the tournament I managed to get my act together and pitch above my average for 8 of the 10 games, which turned out to be enough to win the State Class C Championship. What a thrill for my first time at that level of competition. Everyone in that class pitched above their average. It was nice that everyone was on their game and enjoyable to meet such a wonderful bunch of people. A tip from one of my competitors resulted in improving my ringer percentage a good 10%. I'm really looking forward to next year. I can hardly wait.
5 Minutes of Annual State Meeting Date: August 23, 2014 Place: Winton Park, Coeur d Alene, Idaho Recorded by Kay Keskinen, acting secretary President Brian Poole called the meeting to order at 1:22 pm and welcomed all. The Pledge of Allegiance had been recited earlier in the day. There was a moment of silence to recognize those who had passed away since the last meeting. The minutes of the 2013 meeting were published in the Four Dead and additional copies were available at the meeting. The reading of the minutes was dispensed with. Art Ross made a motion to accept the minutes as presented, Karen Wickham seconded, motion carried. With the absence of Secretary-Treasurer Jerry Smith, the financial report is incomplete but will be published fully in the next issue of Four Dead. Brian reported that the current balance was about $1,200. Melanie Poole made a motion to accept the financial report as presented, Darla Wessel seconded, and the motion carried. Reports from Officers: First Vice President Glen Wessel thanked members for showing up at the state tournament and thanked those who prepared the food. He reported that Coeur d Alene held three tournaments this year. Glen urged people to encourage new pitchers. Second Vice President Brent Wood suggested that if the state tournament is to be held again in Coeur d Alene that it be held later in the year. The motel rates are higher before Labor Day than after. There was no report by Statistician-Secretary- Treasurer Jerry Smith since he was absent. President Brian Poole reported on the World Tournament, for which he was a voting delegate. Six of eight bylaw amendments passed. Spokane, WA bid to host the World Tournament in 2016 and made it to the second vote, but Montgomery, AL will be the site would be the twentieth anniversary of Pocatello hosting the WT, and perhaps a bid might be made then. There is also some interest from the Boise events that are talking to Dave Spears about maybe making a bid in the future. Brian reported on the outcomes of the Idaho pitchers in this year s World Tournament: Art Ross finished 7 th in Elder s C, Gary Opper finished 4 th in Men s A2, Jerry Smith finished 5 th in Men s I2, Brian Poole finished 5 th in Men s L1, and Melanie Poole finished 7 th in Women s K. Correspondence: There was no written correspondence to report. Old Business: Kay Keskinen made a motion to send Steve Summerlin, the ISHPA webmaster, $50 as thanks for his work, Wayne Peterson seconded, and the motion carried. Newsletter Editor Kay Keskinen requested that charters send her stories and photos from their tournaments and other events for inclusion in Four Dead. The NHPA Newsline will be moving from print to electronic-only, though Four Dead will continue to be both print and electronic. In order to save on printing and mailing state newsletters, she encouraged people to send her or Brian their e- mail addresses so that they can receive the electronic version via . The NHPA will need members addresses so that they can begin receiving enewsline for free starting in New Business: The floor was open to general comments. Pep Plummer asked about pitching from either side of the platform. Brian responded by saying that both shoes must be pitched from the same side of the platform in an inning; but in another inning, the shoes may be pitched from the other side, if desired. Brian Poole recommended that people take the judge s clinics at the WT; he did and served as a judge. Kay Keskinen reported on the status of the proposed new 12-court pitching complex in Moscow. The architect design has been done, but the city estimated that it would take $125,000 to build. This summer she attempted to raise $60,000 by finding 12 sponsorships of courts at $5,000 apiece. She fell short of the goal this summer, but was hopeful that for 2016 the money might be found. Darla Wessel suggested that a class for pitchers at least 90 years old be such that they pitch at 20 feet. There was general discussion about the minimum and maximum size of pitching classes and the option to have at the state singles tournament class play on Saturday such that on Sunday there would be the option for championship play. Class sizes of 6-8 were suggested, though there could be groups of Brian offered to submit these
6 proposals to the officers for discussion. It was also discussed that any changes need to be written and sent out to members for their review before voting at the annual meeting Tournament Schedule. Brian suggested that the tournament schedule be sent to Dave Spears as soon as possible. The fall issue of Four Dead comes out in November, and it would be good to have the schedule printed in it. Dave added that he and Jerry Smith work together to create the schedule. Dave needs ample time to order patches and certificates. Hall of Fame. Dave Spears reminded attendees that he wears two hats: one as the Regional Director and the other as the Hall of Fame Chairman. As Regional Director, he does a lot of traveling and is considering having assistant RDs to help him with all the distances involved. As HOF Chairman, Dave reported that this year he is inducting three into the ISHPA HOF. The first two are deceased Clarence Cummins from St. Maries and Jim Kosterman from Boise. The third inductee was Elmer Currie from Coeur d Alene. Dave continued by reading Elmer s certificate and presenting Elmer with his HOF plaque. Tournament Sites in There was no proposal to host the 2015 state doubles tournament. The topic was tabled, and the officers will discuss the possible sites. Meridian will be hosting the 2015 state singles tournament at Settler s Park. Since no motion was made to change the state tournament entry fee, the 2015 entry fee will remain at $ Election of Officers. The Bylaws stipulate the four officers have two-year terms, with the president and second vice president elected in evennumbered years. The floor was opened for nominations for president. Gary Opper nominated Brian Poole for president, Karen Wickham seconded. There being no more nominations, Brian Poole was elected president by acclamation. The floor was opened for nominations for second vice president. Glen Wessel nominated Brent Wood for second vice president, Dave Spears seconded. There being no more nominations, Brent Wood was elected by acclamation. Names on Shirts for Tournaments. Art Ross said that people need to have their names on shirts at all sanctioned tournaments. Brian responded by clarifying that the rules require names on shirts only for state tournaments. Adjournment. Brian declared the meeting adjourned at 2:09 PM.
