1 FOUR DEAD Official Newsletter of the Idaho Horseshoe Pitcher s Association Volume XX, # 3 Winter President s Message I hope everyone had a Great Thanksgiving and Wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! We had a great season in 2009 and hope you all increased your average, or reached a goal you had set and most of all, had a great time pitching horseshoes in cards are available now so contact your local treasurer and get signed up. It was a good turnout for the State Tournament in Meridian Idaho at Settlers Park. It is a fantastic new facility with artificial grass and full concrete walkways. If you get a chance to pitch in a tournament there or just stop by and pitch some shoes for fun, I highly recommend it. We had 29 pitchers at the state tournament but would like to see more. Melanie told me that she would like to see more women pitching, so come on out all you women! The Saturday night meeting has been decreasing in numbers since I started pitching in If you re not attending due to emotions running high in the past, please don t let it stop you in the future. Please come because we want to hear your opinions to help make the Idaho Association one of the best. Please let me know what the officers can do to help increase attendance at the yearly business meeting. At the Saturday business meeting we discussed and voted to change the by-laws so that only two positions are compensated for their time, the Sec./Treasurer and the State Statistician. All other state officers are donating their time to the association. We are doing this because we love this sport and want it to have a good image and hope to recruit new pitchers. Idaho State Doubles will be in Pocatello in July 17-18, 2010 and the State Singles will also be in Pocatello on August 28-29, 2010 at Ross Park. Hope to see you there! Our association numbers did increase a little this year but we need to continue to grow, as well as looking at ways to teach the youth and get them involved and interested for life. I would like to challenge every pitcher to recruit one new member in 2010 and help support one tournament outside of your local area. By doing these two things will help keep horseshoe pitching alive in Idaho! Besides being a great sport and good exercise, pitching horseshoes has allowed Melanie and I to meet great people that have now become our friends for life. We look forward to the next time we can pitch with everyone in the upcoming 2010 season. Thanks for being our Friends! President Brian Poole State Singles Tournament The Idaho State Singles Championship was held on Labor day weekend at the new courts in Meridian. The Division Champs were Gary Opper, Mens, Karen Wickham, Womans, Nick Piva, Elders, and James Price III, Juniors. The complete results were as follows. W L Pct. Date: September 5, 2009 Place: Meridian, Idaho Recorded by Jerry D. Smith President Brian Poole called the meeting to order at 6:40 pm and welcomed all. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited. Brian held a moment of silence for all of those who are no longer with us. The minutes of the 2008 meeting were published in the Four Dead and were passed out. The reading of the minutes was dispensed with. Bob Zausch made a motion to accept the minutes as presented. Melanie Poole seconded. Motion passed. Jerry Smith passed out the financial report and went over the high points. The balance at the end of 2009 is $ or just slightly higher than the ending 2008 balance. The difference is about what the President and Vice Presidents turned in last year by not accepting their stipends. Jim Price made a motion to accept the financial report as presented. Nick Piva seconded. Motion passed. Under Vice President s reports, Gary Kollmann passed out a survey designed to find out what we can do to increase membership and participation. It was pointed out that the 1 st question regarding the date for the State Singles was a mute point as the By-Laws were changed last year and have yet to be updated. The other questions were discussed and Gary will report the findings later. Jerry Smith spoke for the Statistician by stating that Bobby Faulkner did a wonderful job up till the end of June when, for whatever reason, Bobby stopped entering tournaments. It was mentioned that Bobby had a new job and was moving to Mountain Home. Jerry stated that in order to get correct averages for the State Tournament, he just sent all of the results into NATSTATS directly. We are currently almost up to date. Jerry stated that he would take the Stats job if Bobby is unable to continue. The Sec-Treas., Jerry Smith stated that he enjoyed being the Sec./Treas. but was looking forward to just pitching next year, but would help the new Sec/Treas. in any way that he could. Jerry will remain the editor of the 4 Dead and stated after some discussion, that the 4 Dead will continue to publish tournament results and will come out 3 times a year. He will send it out electronically to all who gave him their addresses. Jerry asked if the Sec./Treas. might be instructed to send rules and By- Laws to each new member. The cost would be about $2.00 each mailing. No action was taken. He also reminded people that he had State plaques but had only given out one in 4 years. The cost is your tournament winnings and the difference between that and $25.00 or just $25.00 if you wanted to purchase one. No action. Jerry stated that Idaho s membership was up to 134 from last year s 116. This is a nice increase. President Brian spoke about wanting everyone to promote the sport by getting more pitchers involved. He said his first year was uneventful and that he was available by if anyone had a problem or a suggestion. Under correspondence, Jerry said there was none Under old business; Doug Palmer made motion to send the webmaster, Steve Summerlin, $50.00 as thanks for his work. Brent Wood seconded. Motion passed. The newsletter was discussed and it was decided that 3 issues per year was good and that tournament results are good items to publish. Jerry said he would try for Fall, late Winter and Summer. No action. Under new business, everyone was encouraged to get their schedule into to Jerry Smith by the end of December. Don Titcomb said he needed to get the park reserved in Meridian as early as possible and would be asking for dates similar to the 2009 ones. No action. Dave Spears spoke about his progress with starting the Idaho Horseshoe Pitchers Hall of Fame. He passed out his proposed By-Law and it was discussed. He stated that his choices for the HOF committee were: Nick Piva, Doug Palmer, Clyde Marquez, Gary Kollmann, Jerry Smith, and Bob Zausch. Jerry Smith pointed out that the By-Law did not include any action for those chosen to the HOF. Some thoughts were discussed and David said he would add some language to the By-Laws to cover this omission. Bob Zausch made a motion to add the By-Law when revised to the ISHPA By-Laws. Karen Wickham seconded. Motion Passed. Jerry Smith asked whether there was any interest in developing a set of Idaho guidelines for Tournament Directors. Jim price stated that he had one and agreed to work with Jerry to revise one for the whole state, noting that to make it work, TDs would have to read them. Ha! Jerry then asked if we should consider dropping the wording in the By-Laws where the President and Vice Presidents get a stipend. Gary Kollmann and Brian Poole agreed to not take their pay for this year. David Spears made a motion to drop the stipend for the President and Vice Presidents from the By-Laws. Melanie Poole seconded. Motion passed. David Spears made a motion that Pocatello host the Idaho State Doubles in Bob Zausch seconded. Motion passed. Bob Zausch made a motion that Pocatello host the 2010 State Singles Tournament. Jerry Smith seconded. Motion passed. Gary Kollmann was re-elected as 1st Vice President for the next 2 years by acclamation. Jerry Smith nominated David Spears for Sec./Treas. Darold Johnson seconded. David was elected Sec./Treas. for the next two years. Bob Zausch asked for a round of applause for Jerry Smith for his 4 years of service as State Sec./Treas. which the members complied with. Brian declared the meeting adjourned at around 7:40 pm..

3 Regional Director Message: No real news from the RD at this time other than we have a new NHPA VP in charge of the RD s. Her name is Debbie Michaud out of Maine. The patches and certificates will be ordered in from Debbie and mailed out to the tournament directors once I get them. I wish everybody a happy and healthy new year and a great upcoming horseshoe pitching season. I am getting ready to hit the road with my current job, but will be in touch. Happy new year to all. Good Pitching David Spears Idaho R.D. Secretary Sez The final membership for ISHPA ended the year of 2009 with 134 members. This is an increase of 19 from last year or almost 15%. That s a nice increase and is due to hard work throughout the state in recruiting new members as well as bringing back some old members. Let s keep it going in 2010 This year s election of officers included the 1 st Vice President which returned Gary Kollmann to office and the Sec./Treas. position which elected David Spears. Both ran unopposed for the positions. Starting in January, all membership requests and tournament payments should be directed to David at: David Spears 845 E. 16 th St. N Mtn. Home, ID President Brian Poole later appointed me as State Statistician. Please send all tournament results to: Jerry D. Smith 2850 S.
