1 FOUR DEAD Official Newsletter of the Idaho Horseshoe Pitcher s Association Volume XXVI, #3 Fall/Winter 2015 President s Message I hope all is well and that 2015 brought many challenges and new adventures to us all. I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, and may we all have a great new year in Keep promoting horseshoe pitching wherever you go, and thanks for all of your hard work in keeping this great sport alive. Please have your schedules for 2016 finalized and sent to Newsletter Editor Kay for the Spring newsletter by Feb 1st. Just a reminder that Carol is the new Secretary- Treasurer and you can start sending her your dues for a new 2016 card. Please contact any member of the Board if you have any questions. If you have any youth who are interested learning the game, please provide some clinics and let s get some youth going in our clubs. One of my goals for this next year is to run horseshoe pitching clinics on Tuesday evenings in Pocatello. I hope you all take a chance to make new personal goals and pitching goals for A person should never get in a rut and coast. I try to sit down and make personal, spiritual, family, and occupational goals each year to try and keep me focused on things important to me. I cherish the time spent pitching with all of you this year and hope to see you on the courts in 2016! Brian J Poole, ISHPA President bjpoole3564@gmail.com Secretary Sez I started writing this column back in around 2005 when I became the Idaho Sec./Treas. and like all things good or bad, they must come to an end. I know the good and bad thing applies as I have struggled to have anything intelligent to say on many occasions, but then you know that. The final membership for ISHPA ended the year of 2015 with 117 members. This is a decrease of only 7 from last year but disturbing just the same. The fewer pitchers we have, the harder it is to hold quality tournaments which makes it less desirable to attend tournament etc. etc. It s a never ending battle and we old timers remember the good old days of non-handicapped, competitive, fairly large turn-outs for most tournaments, but I digress. The 2016 cards are here and ready for delivery. Bottom line is we continue to need everyone to push for higher membership numbers. Help out and recruit someone, talk with a former member, get involved. It is my pleasure to introduce the new Idaho Sec./Treas., Carol Plummer. Carol, wife of Regional Director Pep Plummer, offered to take the position when I discovered the large amount of time that is required to do my NHPA 3 rd Vice President and National Sanctioned League Director job. Carol has been involved for 4 years and attends virtually all local events lending a hand wherever needed. She has an accounting background and computer knowledge. Pep and Carol have been to two Worlds and have grown to love the sport. She is a master scorekeeper and has been certified as such at the World Tournament. She assisted me at this year s State Tournament and did a great job. Let s all assist Carol in her new job and be patient. I will help her with the learning process in any area she

2 wishes. I will continue to do the Idaho Statistician job. Good luck Carol, you will do great. Jerry D. Smith, about to be EX Secretary-Treasurer Carol Plummer 6823 Ashland Dr. Boise, ID idkegler@aol.com State Singles Tournament The Idaho State Singles Championship was held on August 29 & 30 at Settler s Park in Meridian. The Division Champs were Gary Opper (his twelfth), Mens; Karen Wickham (her fifth), Womens; Art Ross (his fifth), Elders; and Logan King, Juniors. Regional Director Hey, it's a Pep talk : Greetings one and all horseshoe pitchers. The end of another year is close at hand and with it comes all the holiday activities and festivities, gift giving, and well-wishing for the coming new year. Did you put on your list a new pair of horseshoes? Or make a resolution to do your best at recruiting new members? I've been working on recruiting three times a week at our bowling centers here in Boise and Meridian, as well as at our three pitching parks. I wear my club shirt when I m out so people can see that I'm into horseshoe pitching. Some people have said "I didn't know there was a horseshoe club." Ah, ha! I bring out brochures detailing rules and regulations along with schedule, pitching locations, and web sites for the NHPA and our Idaho State. Of course it's like baiting a fish hook--give them the bait and hope they respond. I know how it feels to almost catch one, but they only nibble at the bait. Our annual club meeting is just around the corner and an invitation has gone out to as many bar league members as can be contacted. Some joined only to qualify and pitch in the last state tournament. I hope they will renew their memberships and pitch in our upcoming events. Don't despair, there will always be more fish in the sea than will ever be caught, so keep trolling and eventually you'll catch one. But think, if each member of our clubs recruits one new member, our state head count would be double. I will be calling on tournament site personnel to resanction all courts in our state. Smith President Brian Poole called the meeting to order at 2:15 pm and welcomed all. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited. Brian held a moment of silence for any and all horseshoe pitchers who have recently passed. Doug Palmer mentioned very recent the passing of Utah s Dennis Ohms, a man known and loved by many everywhere, including Idaho. There was a memorial type of tournament held in his honor, 68 pitchers showed up. Dennis will be missed. The minutes of the 2014 meeting were published in the Four Dead and were passed out to those who needed them. The reading of the minutes was dispensed with. Jim Robinson made a motion to accept the minutes as presented. Art Ross seconded. Motion passed. Jerry Smith distributed the financial report and went over the high points. The balance at the end of 2015 is $1, This is about the same as most years ending balances. The difference relates to the membership numbers and we are about the same as last year. Art Ross made a motion to accept the financial report as presented. Evan Picket seconded. Motion passed. Vice President Glen Wessel was unable to attend this year s tournament because of the fire season near his home. Brent Wood spoke about their club and stated that Stu Brown was signed up but could not make the trip. He asked for participation in his next and expects about the same date. Regional Director David Spears stepped down earlier this year and the Council submitted and got approval to appoint Pep Plummer as David s replacement. Pep accepted and is on the job. Statistician Jerry Smith stated that all went well this year and encouraged the continued use of HSMaster. The Sec-Treas., Jerry Smith stated that 2015 went well although, on a personal note, his new job as NHPA Third Vice President kept him very busy and has been a very big learning experience. Jerry stated that Idaho s membership finished at 117 as compared to last year s total of 124. President Brian encouraged everyone to promote the game and get new members involved. He

5 spoke about some of the new rules discussed and voted on at the World Tournament. Two of special interest were 1) the proposed change in age for Elders to 65, which failed, and 2) the reversal of ages for Cadets back to 10 which also failed. Brian stated how well the World went in Topeka, Kansas; they did a great job. Under correspondence, Jerry said there was none Under old business; Jerry Smith made a suggestion to send the webmaster, Steve Summerlin, $50.00 as thanks for his work and then noted that he accidently paid Steve twice this year so we are paid through Jim Robinson motioned to approve and Karen Wickham seconded. Motion carried. The newsletter continues to acquire Idaho pitcher s addresses for electronic circulation, but many more are probably out there. Please get your address to Kay. Jerry discussed that Kay Keskinen has taken over as Editor of the Four Dead and has done a great job. Under new business, Brian again asked that everyone get their proposed tournament schedule to Jerry Smith by sometime in December if at all possible. (Editor s note: Pocatello never gets theirs in on time.) The floor was opened to a discussion concerning a proposal presented by Gary Opper which proposed to change the number of tournaments needed to enter the Idaho State Tournament from two to four. The Council felt that the issue was minor in nature and could be changed by simple vote at the annual meeting without a written ballot form. A written ballet form is required to change a by-law except for minor issues. The discussion turned lively and somewhat heated. Many views were expressed and a vote was taken. The vote passed by a 19 to 12 margin. After thinking about the issue, the Council decided to void the vote in favor of a written ballot form as required by the By-laws. This form will come out in the spring issue of the Four Dead. The two tournament requirement stays in effect until the voting is complete. Jerry Smith noted that the Hall of Fame position is open and needs filled. No action was taken. Jerry Smith made a motion that Pocatello host the Idaho State Doubles in Warren Glahn seconded. Motion carried. A discussion followed about perhaps moving the date back into June. It will be looked into. Pocatello was awarded the 2016 State Singles Tournament as stated in the By-Laws. They were represented as required. The dates will be the weekend before Labor Day. Since no motion was made to change the State Tournament entry fee, the 2016 entry fee will remain at $ No nominations were received for 1 st Vice President so Glen Wessel was re-elected by acclamation. Glen had said that he would continue. Jerry Smith nominated Carol Plummer for Sec/Treas. stating that he would prefer to step down because of his current work load and the need to train new people. Art Ross seconded. Nomination accepted. Rodney Pickering nominated Jerry Smith for the position wondering if we needed the experience. Jerry declined and assured everyone that Carol will receive good training and support. Carol was elected by acclamation. Brian thanked all for attending the State Tournament and the annual meeting. 9 MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION Idaho State Horseshoe Pitchers Association National Horseshoe Pitchers Association The NHPA card is a combination membership of the state and the national horseshoe pitching associations. This card entitles you to participate in NHPA sanctioned play throughout the United States and much of Canada, where ever you meet the requirements of the event. You must pay your dues through the state charter where you maintain legal residence as determined by voting, taxes and/or drivers license laws. Dues are based on the calendar year. New members may pay next year s dues after Oct. 1st of the current year and will be eligible to participate in sanctioned events for the final 3 months of the current year, as well as all of the next year. As a member of the Idaho Charter, you will receive newsletters and a schedule of all sanctioned and some non-sanctioned tournaments for the state. Your pitching stats from all sanctioned events will be forwarded to the NHPA stats headquarters called NatStats. These stats are updated weekly and can be accessed through the NHPA website. To make all this possible, your NHPA card will have six digits followed by two decimals. Idaho is region 08, followed by four digits, which is your membership number. The two decimals represent the calendar year. The decimal and color of the NHPA card change each year. Your membership number will remain with you as long as you reside in Idaho and continue to maintain your membership. If you ever lose your NHPA card, the charter secretary will issue you a duplicate card free of charge. You need only notify the Sec./Treas.
