FOUR DEAD Official Newsletter of the Idaho Horseshoe Pitcher s Association Volume XXV, #2 Summer 2014 President s Message So remember this spring when I asked everyone to write down a couple of goals and put them where you can see them every day? Well, one of mine was to pitch a 40% game, and I did that on the third day at the World Tournament. What a joy it was to accomplish one of my goals at this year s World Tournament. Now I can work on the other two goals for the rest of the year. I hope everyone is working with your local clubs to help build our membership. We are down pitchers this year and need to Promote! Promote! Promote this sport! I just want to go over a few details about the Idaho State Singles Tournament coming up August 23-24, 2014 in beautiful Coeur d Alene, Idaho. You need two sanctioned tournaments to be eligible, call to register by 8 PM, Thursday August 21, Anyone after that will be put on a waiting list and entered if there is space available in a group. Jerry Smith will not be there, so please don t bother him. Coeur d Alene put on a great tournament three years ago, and I know they will roll out the red carpet for us again this year. If you have any questions, please call Glen Wessel. If you have anything that you want me to put on the agenda for the Annual meeting Saturday between the sessions please it to me or call me. Last year s minutes are in last fall s issue. Lastly I would like to talk about each of our clubs doing something in your area to help build a junior program. We need to inform people about the scholarships available and get more kids involved to help grow this sport. I am planning on doing a junior league this fall in Pocatello to help get more members and to get the word out that we exist and what a great sport we have that the whole family can enjoy. Please contact Aleena Cook from NHPA to give you any help with a Junior Program and provide any information you need. Hope to see you in Beautiful Coeur d Alene! Keep Pitching and see you at the courts! Brian J Poole, ISHPA President bjpoole3564@gmail.com Idaho State Singles Tournament Sat-Sun, August 23-24, 2014 Winton Park, Coeur d Alene Register by Thursday, August 21 by calling ISHPA President Brian Poole at Secretary Sez The membership as of July 1, 2014 is 115, and due to my absence from the state for the next two months, that is the figure I am using to estimate the end of the fiscal year financial report to be presented at the State Singles Tournament in Coeur d Alene in late August. Late applications should bring our membership number up to around last year s final figure of 124. As stated, the State Singles Tournament is in Coeur d Alene on August 23 and 24. The deadline is the Thursday before, and early signups are appreciated. Charter President Brian Poole will be the Tournament Director so please direct all questions to him. It is anticipated that the format will stay similar to recent years. Other officers,

except me, will be taking sign-ups and the fee is still $ Calling or leaving messages with me will not get you into the 2014 Idaho State Tournament, sorry about that. The Coeur d Alene crew is a fun bunch, and I highly recommend attending this great tournament. Kay Keskinen, Newsletter Editor, has agreed to take notes at the annual meeting and, in general, act as my replacement. I will send her the usual handouts and I appreciate her willingness to help out. Good luck to all State Tournament pitchers and may you all pitch above your averages. Jerry D. Smith Idaho Sec/Treas. Annual Meeting The annual meeting traditionally held on the Saturday night of State Tournament weekend was held last year at lunchtime on Saturday. This year we will follow that plan again in order to enjoy the full participation of a large contingent of Idaho pitchers. The host club that prepares the meat potion of the meal has agreed to the time change, and the meeting will be held while lunch is served. It remains a pot-luck and out of town pitchers can bring staple items like chips, drinks, cookies, or whatever. For the meeting and scorekeeping chores it is suggested that you bring lawn chairs as seating may be limited. Sign-in is at 8:00 am on Saturday with pitching to start around 9:00 am. Pitching will begin at 8:00 am on Sunday so travelers can get out of town quicker. Should you have any questions, please call an ISHPA officer. Regional Director/HOF As the Regional Director, I wanted to remind sites that if they are looking to run more tournaments for this year to contact me for patches and certificates. Wearing my Hall of Fame Chairperson hat, I am pleased to announce to the membership that during the state singles tournament lunchtime annual meeting in Coeur d Alene, I will be inducting into the ISHPA Hall of Fame three people based on their outstanding promotional and organizational efforts and pitching abilities. Currently, the Hall of Fame includes two deceased inductees who were former state champions Dave Spears Idaho Regional Director Idaho HOF Chairperson Report from the Kootenai Club Time flies when you're having fun. The summer solstice, June 21, 2014, was a perfect day for the Elmer Currie Classic at Winton Horseshoe Park in Coeur d 'Alene. I'd like to thank the 32 participants and especially thank the score keepers and Bob Wheeler who did the computer work. It was nice to see Elmer at the opening ceremony even though he wasn't able to play in the tournament named after him. Elmer is one of our senior most members and I've had the pleasure of knowing him for more than 30 years. The next tournament in Coeur d' Alene will be August 9, I'm sure it will fill up fast, so anyone from out of town interested in participating may want to call in advance. Our local pitchers do have a few options with Spokane, Washington tournaments to get more in before the State. I realize that not everyone can attend every tournament because summer is just too short here. That being said, I'd like to encourage everyone to attend as many horseshoe events as possible and help bring in new members of all ages. We had 2 cadets at our last tournament. One who shot for a third place in A class. That was cool. Our local weekly practice is still Thursday at 5:00 pm. Of course we are looking forward to hosting the State singles championships on August 23 and 24. Our courts are looking good and will be ready for play. We ve ordered good weather for that weekend. We hope you ll consider coming early or staying late to enjoy what our city has to offer. If you need information about area motels, give me a call. Hope to see you soon! Glen Wessel, 1st VP

Report from the Treasure Valley Club Dave Spears reports that the Treasure Valley Club has been making improvements to the courts at the Julia Davis Park in Boise. Concrete walks are being replaced; three are done so far, with more to come. Club President Pep Plummer is shown below helping to replace a peg in one of the clay courts. New concrete walkway Pep Plummer Hamburg, NY World Tournament Experience Going to the 2014 World Tournament brings back all the great memories of the previous 3 that I have attended: Pocatello (2004), Bakersfield (2005), and Utah (2013). It is a family reunion that I look forward to Melanie at WT each year that I make it and hope that I can make it to the next one. I want everyone to start making plans for July 13-27, 2015 in Topeka, Kansas. Here is a link for more information: It is the greatest feeling to walk into the Event Center and have someone yell your name across the floor and come shake your hand or give you a big hug. You have the chance to renew past friendships and make new memories. Brian at WT As you arrive and get acquainted with the new surroundings and look around to take in the atmosphere that you are here with your new family and pitching shoes with all your new friends. Mel and I have a great time meeting other pitchers while we are scorekeeping and being a judge. The first day and first game jitters are always something that you have to deal with and just tell yourself that this is just like any other tournament an just another day pitching shoes, but it is not. You want to take that trophy, patch, and coveted

title of Class World Champion home with you. And once you have done it or get close, you have the bug and now you want to do it again. The first game is always the hardest to settle down and you know what your expectations are and hope you can meet them. After the first day you settle in and hope to survive the second day. Some games are won or lost by only one 1 point or one ringer and everyone is trying to pitch their best. Sometimes our shoes are inconsistent but the friendships never are!! If you survived the second day and are still at the top of your class you have a chance the third Brian awarded 5 th place day to come away with a NHPA Class World Championship. The third day comes around and everyone knows who s at the top and who still has a chance at the title and who they are rooting for to be the spoiler for their group. It sometimes comes down to the last game and who can throw that last final ringer or close shoe to take the match. When it is all said and done it is a great time and one of the greatest events you will ever be a part of. There is also the site seeing that is a great thing about traveling to different places and pitching horseshoes with new people. We spent a day traveling through Western New York State and seeing the historical sites and learning the history of the area. We also spent a day and went to one of the wonders of the area, Niagara Falls. WOW, WHAT A SIGHT TO SEE! Through it all we love the time spent at Hamburg, NY talking to those met in the past and meeting new friends who just experienced their first World Horseshoe Tournament and now have caught the bug and tell you See you next year as you say goodbye and go your separate ways. What a great family we are associated with while being involved in Horseshoe Pitching! Brian & Melanie Poole NHPA News Newsline to become enewsline Starting in January 2015, the printed Newsline will be replaced by enewsline, which will be free and will be delivered directly by , allowing members to read the publication in full color on their computer or other devices. The increased cost of publishing and mailing the printed issues, along with decreasing subscriptions, has predicated this change to an electronic newsletter. This will result in a huge savings to the NHPA, increased visibility, and an opportunity to reach the entire membership at no cost to them. Effective July 1, 2014, Sara Otto of Minnesota will hold the position of enewsline Editor. She has been the Minnesota Ringer Digest Editor for the past seven years and brings extensive experience in e- publications. The last printed Newsline will be the November/December 2014 issue. Please make sure that your state organization has your address so that you can begin receiving enewsline directly. New Book about AAU Horseshoe Pitching Bob Dunn, NHPA Historian, has just completed publishing a book about a phase of our sport that very few are aware of - The AAU National Amateur Horseshoe Pitching Championships. It is interesting and well done. After the publishing costs are recovered, the proceeds will go to the NHPF (the Foundation of the NHPA), Bob will not earn a penny on this project. Please forward this information and have it reprinted in your newsletters. Encourage your members to purchase a copy and for clubs to purchase copies to use in tournaments as fundraisers. Let's support Bob's efforts here to raise funds for the NHPF. The book may be ordered online from Receive 35% off when you use the coupon code NHPA during checkout. Despite being a holiday weekend, the tournament was well attended, probably because that just prior to the tournament, the courts were officially dedicated and named in Don s honor. Don spent countless hours at these courts pitching and promoting the sport that he loved. The city of Meridian honored Don because of his help in the overseeing of the construction of the courts (making

sure NHPA specs were met) and his continuous promotion of horseshoes which has helped keep these wonderful facilities very busy. Several family members and friends joined in the ceremony as well as many Treasure Valley Horseshoe Pitching Club members. Five of Don s family members pitched in the tournament as pacers, and all seemed pleased with the new sign and the chance to pitch with old and new friends alike. 1. Gary Opper % 2.
