1 FOUR DEAD Official Newsletter of the Idaho Horseshoe Pitcher s Association Volume XXVI, #2 Summer 2015 President s Message Well, we are half way through 2015 and have crowned the 2015 World Champions in Topeka, Kansas. Melanie and I had a great time in Topeka. We didn t pitch our best, but we had a great time meeting our old friends and making new ones. Melanie had fun scorekeeping and flirting with the Elder and Men s groups. I judged and had a great time with Richard Altis from Missouri. I also took the Judging Clinic and will have that certification on my membership card now. I encourage everyone to take this clinic when possible just to get into the rules--to learn them and how they help the game. There was a great turnout for this year s World Tournament in Topeka, Kansas at 1,404 pitchers. The other great news is that St. George won the bid for So plan now to work on your technique and get ready for St. George in Next year is in Montgomery, Alabama July 25- August 6, Make your plans now to attend and there is a better chance that you can make it. I hope everyone is working on inviting new prospects to sign up and invite them to your next tournament. We all need to have a goal to invite one new member to every tournament and maybe pay their first year s dues as a gift so they can be exposed to the horseshoe experience and get hooked. Do whatever you can to promote our fun sport with others! I would like to encourage all pitchers who have to go sign up for the new NHPA enewsline that is sent out four times each year. This is a free publication now and it will keep you advised of what is going on in horseshoes and current events. Here is the link to sign up. look for enewsline banner at bottom of web page. I have NHPA World tournament Raffle tickets if you would like to use them as prizes for your tournament winners or just to have a chance at the 2016 World Tournament prizes. $20 for 5 pack or $5 for a single ticket. I am also doing a raffle for GCHPA this year as a test to see if it is worth the time and effort. I have about 500 tickets left. They are $1 each, and the drawings are on Sept 1 for $50, Sept 2 for $100, and Sept 3 for $200. The ticket number is determined by the Idaho evening Pick 3 numbers on those days. Call me if you are interested in buying or helping me sell the remaining tickets. If there is anything I can help you with, please contact me and let me know what it is I can do to help. Brian J Poole, ISHPA President bjpoole3564@gmail.com Secretary Sez The membership for the ISHPA so far is around 113 members. This represents a slight decrease of membership and it is amazing how we go up and down each year. We still have several of last year s members missing and we need to pursue bringing them back while continuing to strive for new members. The World Tournament held in Topeka, Kansas was the largest in the past few years and went very well. It is refreshing to see a large group of people who simply love horseshoe pitching. Many new winners and champions were crowned and one,

2 Alan Francis, just continues to amaze. The 20-time Mens Champion again shot over 90% in the prelims and won the Championship round with a mere 88+%. He is such a pleasant gentleman and wonderful representative of our sport. He is reason enough to start planning your trip to Montgomery next year and for sure, St. George, Utah when the World returns there in I hope you all had a chance to see the Saturday morning coverage of the World by On the Road ESPN. I tried to get on TV as much as possible but I had to stand in line behind other hoggish officials. It was great to have them there. The age for short distance pitchers stayed at 70, and the upper age for Cadets remained at 12. See you in Meridian at the 2015 Idaho State Horseshoe Pitching Tournament. Jerry D. Smith Idaho Sec/Treas State Tournament The Idaho State Tournament will be held in Meridian on August 29th & 30th. It is hoped that this State Tournament will draw a decent turnout. Don t forget the Pre-State tournament to be held on Friday night, start time is 6:00 pm. The tournament should again be exciting and, with more participation, should be very competitive. To enter the State Tournament, a pitcher must be a member in good standing, have pitched in two sanctioned tournaments since and including the last State. Enter the tournament by contacting Brian Poole, Brent Wood, Glen Wessel, or Jerry Smith by August 27th. The entry fee this year was set at the annual meeting last year and is $ Get out and enjoy the competition and support horseshoe pitching. A good time awaits you. Remember to wear shirts with your name on the back. The schedule will not be known until just before the event. NO pitching times will be sent out by mail. Pre-payment is not required, but if you sign up, show up. Nothing ruins a tournament more than no shows. The opening ceremonies will start at 8:50 am on Saturday, August 29 th and we hope to start pitching by 9:00 am. The meeting and potluck should start around 1:00 pm. The second shift should start by about 2:00 pm or so. Annual Meeting The annual meeting traditionally is held on the Saturday of the State Tournament weekend and is being now held at lunchtime on Saturday. This year we will follow that plan again in order to enjoy the full participation of a large contingent of Idaho pitchers at the annual meeting. The host club prepares the meat potion of the pot-luck meal which is eaten during the lunch time meeting. It remains a pot-luck and out of town pitchers can bring staple items like chips, drinks cookies or whatever. For the meeting and scorekeeping chores, it is suggested that you bring lawn chairs as seating may be limited. Sign-in is at 8:00 am on Saturday with pitching to start around 9:00 am. Sunday pitching will begin at 8:00 am so travelers can get out of town quicker. Good luck to all. Should you have any questions, please call an ISHPA officer. Directions to Settler s Park in Meridian, ID From I-84, take the Meridian Street exit north through the city of Meridian and, after reaching Fairview Avenue, jog left back to Meridian Avenue and continue a mile or so to the light at Ustick. Turn left, continue about a half a mile, and enter the parking lot beside the horseshoe courts on your right. Regional Director Report Hello everybody, I'm Pep Plummer from Boise, Idaho. I have been appointed your new Regional Director for all clubs in Idaho. My wife (Carol) and I are looking forward to meeting many of you at our up and coming state tournament. This year it will be held at Settler s Park in Meridian, Idaho starting with the Pre-State tournament on Friday, August 28. The State Tournament runs Sat-Sun August Friday sign in time is 8:30 am. Hope you have the two tournaments needed to qualify for entry. If not, time is running out; check your local schedule for tournaments yet to be played.

3 My wife and I attended the World Tournament in Topeka, Kansas and had a good time. I'll elaborate more in next issue of Four Dead. In the meantime, let s get some new members into our clubs, they are out there, we first have to find them. Till next time, good pitching, stay safe and throw lots of ringers. 8 You Know You re from Idaho When: Driving is better in the winter because the potholes are filled with snow. You design your kid's Halloween costume to fit over a snowsuit. You see a car running in the parking lot at the store with no one in it no matter what time of the year. Your idea of a traffic jam is ten cars waiting to pass a tractor on the highway. You've ridden the school bus for an hour each way. In March your vehicle is 43% mud. The bumper jack in your pickup will lift a house. The elevation exceeds the population. When the sun goes down you start looking for your coat. You can fish, golf, and go skiing all in the same day if you try hard enough. You wave to someone on the freeway because you recognize the truck. You've broken down on the highway and somebody stops to help you. During a storm you check the cattle before you check the kids. Using the elevator involves a grain truck. Your mayor is also your garbage hauler, barber, and insurance salesman. It takes 30 seconds to reach your destination and it's clear across town. When someone says 'panhandle' you think of the long drive. You've been in states that are smaller than the county you grew up in. You can charge at all the local stores or write checks without any ID. You've ever had to switch from "heat" to "A/C" in the same day. A rodeo is more popular than a rock concert. You're on a first name basis with the county sheriff. When the magazine mentions in trivia that only one state capital can be written in upside down numbers on a calculator, you get it right the first time: You've caught 'rainbow' trout that were all one color. You decide to walk somewhere for exercise and 5 people pull over and ask you if you want a ride.
