If there is anyone out there who would like to take over the newsletter or share it with me, please let me know. I m more than happy to teach you. In reality I can usually make time to put the newsletter together, it s just chasing people for content that I m struggling to find the time for. 6 Chapter History With Marilyn Caden CHAPTER CHALLENGES Prior to Mt Isa forming their chapter in 2000 it was called the Chapter challenge was held between Alice Springs and Darwin and the challenges were held at the NT rallies. The buffalo horns were the original trophy and then the other one from Mt Isa with the three pistons came into it. The Tri Chapter challenge Darwin, Alice Springs and Mt Isa was first organised by Digby Hart (Darwin) Brett Peterson (Mt Isa) and Pedro Goodwin (Alice Springs) in After much discussion sometimes at the Goldfields Hotel, Tennant Creek, it was decided to meet once a year at Renner Springs. The National rallies were always held at Easter time at this stage and a few days later on the way home, Tennant Creek hosted the street Go kart championships and Bike show so that is why we got back to Tennant Creek for the weekend. The Chapter challenge was a bit slow in starting as dates could not be decided on but the Challenge finally got organised and has been very popular for the last few years Yes 2010 Mt Isa QLD Rally 2009 yes - Mt Isa - man came off bike 2008 yes - Arnie broke wrist 2007 yes 2006 yes 2005 yes - Alice Springs National Rally 2004 yes - Alice Springs Rally 2003 no - Open Road Tour 2002 yes - Alice Springs Rally 2001? 2000? 1999 yes -chapter challenge Darwin Show Grounds 1998 yes - chapter challenge Alice Springs Rally Perhaps someone can fill in the missing years as I can t remember and if anyone may think that some of the years are not correct please let me know. 7 Harley Davidson s 110 th Birthday and the 73 rd Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Let me start off by saying that a lot of the newer members may not know that I attended the 100 th Birthday Celebrations of Harley Davidson as well as the 63 rd Sturgis Motorcycles Rally in That trip I did over 8 weeks and was organised by Heavy Duty. It was the absolute trip of a lifetime. With 2013 only next year you would also be aware that 2013 is Harley s 110 th Birthday. Linda & I are planning to go over again to the USA next year for the celebrations in Milwaukee and take in the 73 rd Sturgis Rally at the same time. The plan is to go again for 8 weeks and take our bike which I did last time. You need the 8 weeks if you want to attend both events as Sturgis is the first week of August each year and the Birthday Celebrations in Milwaukee are on the last weekend in August. I am arranging the trip through Heavy Duty who have numerous packages to suit different budgets. The packages include both Hiring a bike over there or taking your own. They also have packages for people who only want to do either Sturgis or the Birthday Celebrations but not both. There is one for people who want to do both and be fully escorted for the entire trip and another that covers both events but you do your own thing in between. I am opting for the last option where Heavy Duty organises Air Fares and Bike Shipping plus accommodation in Los Angeles, Sturgis & Milwaukee. I will then organise the rest. So far I have done a preliminary route which will take us to San Francisco via Hwy 1 then to Yellowstone National Park, The Beartooth Highway then onto Sturgis. After Sturgis we are heading to Canada and Niagara Falls then onto New York down to Savannagh then back upto Milwaukee for the 110 th. After Milwaukee back to Los Angeles via Colorado Springs and the Million Dollar Highway to Las Vegas then onto Los Angeles. On the way home we plan to stopover in Hawaii for 3 nights as a bit of R&R. Total trip is approx. 15,000k s. Should anyone be interested in joining us I would be happy to go into further details of our planned route and the things you can expect to see along the way. 12 To all car and bike club members, 15 th March 2012 The 5 th Shannons Motoring Extravaganza is fast approaching and I trust everyone is busy preparing their motoring art for the event to compliment your club display. Shannons provides the event as a thank you to the clubs and their members who support Shannons and at the same time giving members the opportunity to show off their pride and joy. It gives clubs the opportunity to promote their events, raise their profile and grow their membership. Should you know others with interesting vehicles that are not members of a club, by all means provide them with an entry form. The more the merrier. Many local motor trades associated businesses are showing excellent interest in supporting this event. NB: All businesses and clubs are required to provide a Public Liability Certificate of Currency. This is a mandatory compliance for businesses and clubs The three pavilions will once again be used as well as the lush grassy oval for the displays. Catering will be in the same location as it has been for the previous events. Attached is the entry form. I ask that all clubs designate a co ordinator and collect the entry forms from their members and submit to me in one batch before the 11 th May so I can do the space allocation. Please submit your entry form thru your club coordinator. There will be no charge to put your vehicles on display however as this is a charity event whereby all gate takings go to charity, normal admission fees will apply. This is not considered too much to ask of members to support their club. I anticipate this year s display will be bigger than ever with many new vehicles coming out of backyard sheds for the biggest totally automotive show in the Northern Territory and the premier event in which to show off your vehicle and your club. Hopefully we will get a contingent from Alice Springs once again making the trek this year. Yours Sincerely John Palamountain Business Development Manger Shannons Page 12

18 My First (Big) Bike By Coxy Once upon a time, a long long time ago... when I started riding, the 250cc law had just come in and as with any new law, there was ways, and loop-holes around it. In my case, being in the ADF, I managed to have a NSW licence with a Victorian address, on top of that having just acquired my Army Licence, I shot down to the RTA (MVR) and transferred it over to Full licence at the ripe old age of 19, heh heh heh. I had been riding around on a Z400 (of dubious parentage), that I had built up from a basket case, complete with ACE instrument-protector bars, megaphone exhaust, (baffles by Jex) did a couple of Rallies, (see My First Rally, another story) met a girl, she was on a 185 Suzy, me on the big 400, and as it happened, her brother had THE bike, A Kwaka Nine, and available for sale, for the princely sum of $1000. Keeping in mind, for an apprentice, $1000 was a hell of a lot of money, but this had Yoshimura 1015cc race kit with Pops Yoshi cams and CLIP ON handlebars, (sidenote, also the last bike I ever had with clip-ons) I can still recall the trepidation as I straddled it for the first time, this bike was huge, and actually capable of accelerating up hill at a exceptional rate of knots, (another sidenote is I still have one, which I lovingly refer to as my little bike). So within a day of owning said gargantuan, I announced that I was going on a shakedown ride, taking in some of the best motorcycling roads Victoria, hence the world has to offer, only to arrive home 3 days later to a very pissed off girlfriend, What?, said I, I only wanted to get comfortable on the thing, after all, you want to be safe? I learnt way back then a great lesson in life, there is NO words, nor argument nor amount of flowers nor shovel big enough to get you out of that proverbial pile. Flash forward to July 08 and, after taking delivery of my shiny new Road King, and dutifully taking the family for joy rides, my ever-loving and long suffering wife, charitably suggested that I go for a decent ride, with her only stipulation, that I tell her what DAY I ll be back!! Page 18

19 RIDE RULES 1. Arrive with a full tank of fuel and an empty bladder. Fuel stops will be made as required along the way. 2. Have appropriate riding gear for expected conditions. 3. The nominated Ride Captain leads the group. DO NOT OVER- TAKE him or her. 4. A motor cycle requires a FULL LANE to operate safely. We ride in STAGGERED FORMATION and NOT SIDE BY SIDE. STAGGERED FORMATION: One second rule: The bike to the left or right of you should not be less than one second ahead of you. Two second rule: Maintain two seconds between you and the bike in front of you. Four second rule: Your eyes should be watching a few bikes ahead of you, not fixed on the bike in front of you. 5. We only use one lane of a multi lane highway. That is the lane the Road Captain is using. 6. Maintain a constant speed, this helps prevent the Rubber Band effect. Always adhere to the speed limits. 7. A rider will be nominated to ride at the rear of the group. It is his or her responsibility to ensure that the riders DO NOT GET LOST and to render assistance if necessary. 8. The group as a whole MUST NOT stop for an individual as it can be dangerous to have the whole group stop on the side of the road. The nominated Tail End rider will stop and render assistance. 9. When we do stop as a group, be sure to park well off the road. 10. ALWAYS signal your intention to change lanes. Keep a safe distance behind the rider in front, CHECK YOUR MIRRORS often and concentrate on your riding. 11. If every rider can see the rider behind him or her in the mirrors, the group should not get split up. Adjust your speed to do so. 12. We ride as a GROUP to and from our destination until we split up to go home. KEEP THE GROUP TOGETHER, TRY NOT TO LAG BEHIND. Rides will be listed as HOG or NON-HOG. On a HOG ride, only HARLEYS may be ridden but friends or visitors may meet us at the destination. On a NON-HOG ride, members friends or visitors may ride NON-HARLEYS but at the rear of the group. In both cases any friends or visitors will be the responsibility of the member who invited them. 13. Riders in doubt about ANY aspect of the ride should ask the Road Captain or appointed Road Marshall for assistance. 14. Although it is a group, ride safety is a personal responsibility 15. Novices or riders new to the group should ride towards the back until they are comfortable 16. If it isn t safe to pass, go through an intersection or turn: DON T. 17. In spite of what the group does, pass as if you were riding alone (within formation). 18. Stay within the bounds of your skill level. Don`t be influenced by the bike ahead of you diving into curves. Group riding is neither a race nor a competition. 19. If you don't feel comfortable riding in a group, ride on your own. Staggered Riding Formation Changing Lanes Page 19
