IU also finished regular season unblemished in 1976 (15-0-1) and 1997 (18-0). Freshman goalkeeper Trey Muse has played well this season, posting a NCAA-best 13 shutouts while allowing just four goals with 45 saves. Freshman Mason Toye lead the Hoosiers with Big Ten-leading nine goals and 19 points on the season, while junior Andrew Gutman has scored five times this year. Junior Trevor Swartz and freshman Griffin Dorsey lead the team with five assists each. NEWS AND NOTES Senior D Grant Lillard was named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List for the second-straight season. Last year, Lillard earned Second-Team All-America honors from both College Soccer News and Top Drawer Soccer, as well as First-Team All-Big Ten and First-Team All-Region accolades. Lillard was also named one of 10 finalists for the Senior CLASS award. The senior was also named a preseason First-Team All-America honoree by both Top Drawer Soccer and College Soccer News. Along with Lillard, both Andrew Gutman and Jeremiah Gutjahr were named to the Big Ten Preseason Honors List. Gutjahr had a busy offseason, earning a spot on the USMNT U-20 team for the 2017 CONCACAF U-20 Championship. Previously, Gutjahr has been named to the U.S. U-20 and U-18 teams. IU was seeded No. 7 overall in the 2016 NCAA Tournament, marking the 12th time in the last 14 years since the current seeding format began in 2003 that IU has earned a top-16 seed. IU reached the Round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament for the 36th time in program history and for the fifth time under head coach Todd Yeagley. The berth for the Hoosiers was the team s 30th-straight bid to the NCAA Tournament and the 41st overall in the program s history. #Q49 // #GoIU

3 SCOUTING THE NITTANY LIONS The Penn State Nittany Lions finished the regular season with an overall record of on the year and earned the No. 7 seed in the Big Ten Tournament after posting a mark of in league play. After dropping six-in-a-row, the Nittany Lions are playing their best soccer of the season and enter the Big Ten Tournament winners of threestraight matches that included victories over Rutgers and Northwestern. Penn State is 0-4 against ranked teams this season, but has played each one tough, losing three contests by just one goal in each. In a preseason poll conducted of the league s coaches, Penn State was picked to finish sixth in the Big Ten. Evan Finney, Aaron Molloy and Pierre Reedy were named to the Big Ten Preseason Honors List. In 2016, the Nittany Lions posted a record of overall and a mark of 4-4 in league play. PSU fell to Michigan State in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament. SERIES HISTORY In the 49-match history between the two programs dating back to 1978, leads the series over Penn State, Since 2013, the Nittany Lions have had the better of the series over the Hoosiers, posting a record of In the Big Ten Tournament, the two teams have met 15 times, with holding a record of In Bloomington, the Hoosiers have posted a record of against the Nittany Lions. EIGHT HOOSIERS EARNS ALL-BIG TEN HONORS Grant Lillard headlines the group, as the senior was unanimously selected as the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and First-Team All- Big Ten. Mason Toye was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year, as well as First-Team All-Big Ten and was a unanimous selection to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team. Joining Lillard and Toye on the All-Big Ten First-Team were both Andrew Gutman and Francesco Moore. Griffin Dorsey, Timmy Mehl and Trey Muse were all named Second-Team All-Big Ten. Jack Griffith was named the Hoosiers Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honoree. Along with Toye, both Dorsey and Muse were also picked for the Big Ten All-Freshman Team. The three All-Freshman Team selections matches a program-best set in 2003, 2006 and CONSECUTIVE-SHUTOUTS SCHOOL RECORD posted nine-straight shutouts, setting a program record and eclipsing the 1975 and 1976 teams that combined for seven-straight. 4 SCORELESS MINUTES RANKED FOURTH ALL-TIME Freshman goalkeeper Trey Muse had his consecutive scoreless minutes streak come to an end in a 2-1, double-overtime victory over Wisconsin. Muse s consecutive scoreless-minute streak reached an incredible 966:28 minutes, ranking as the fourth-longest streak in NCAA history. BIG TEN TOURNAMENT HISTORY IU has won 12 Big Ten tournament titles, sharing the 1995 crown with Wisconsin. NEVER TRAILED The Hoosiers are the only team in the nation to not have trailed in a match at any point this season. IU is one of just two undefeated teams left in the nation, along with FIU. HOOSIERS IN THE NATIONAL POLLS is ranked No. 1 in the nation in the Soccer America poll. The Hoosiers come in at No. 2 in the polls from United Soccer Coaches, Top Drawer Soccer and College Soccer News. In the NCAA RPI rankings released on Monday, IU comes in at No. 5. HISTORICALLY STINGY DEFENSE Through the first 17 matches of the season, has allowed just four goals - tied for the fewest in school history. IU allowed just two goals through the first 15 matches this season, which was a school record. The school record for fewest goals allowed in a season is 4 by the 1979 Hoosier team. OFFENSIVE FIREPOWER s offense has been one of the most potent in the nation, scoring 37 goals through the team s first 17 matches. 5 EIGHT HOOSIERS EARN MIDSEASON HONORS Eight Hoosiers were earned midseason honors from Top Drawer Soccer. On the midseason Upperclassmen Top-100 list, Grant Lillard was ranked No. 3, Andrew Gutman No. 74 and Timmy Mehl No. 82. On the midseason Freshmen Top-100 list, Griffin Dorsey was ranked No. 2, Mason Toye No. 12, Trey Muse No. 22, Spencer Glass No. 52 and Thomas Warr No. 57. s five freshmen are the most of any school in the country, while the eight total honorees are tied for the most in the nation. TRUE FRESHMEN FIREPOWER The Hoosiers have received an immediate boost of offense from the true freshmen trio of Mason Toye, Griffin Dorsey and Thomas Warr. The trio has combined to score 14 goals and tally nine assists on the season. Toye has totaled a team-high nine goals and one assist, while Dorsey has three goals and a team-high five assists. Warr has recorded two goals and three assists on the year. YEAGLEY EARNS CAREER VICTORY NO. 100 head coach Todd Yeagley earned career victory No. 100 in IU s 4-0 win over Evansville on Oct. 3. Yeagley has posted a record of at and went in his lone year as head coach of Wisconsin in DORSEY PLAYS FOR U.S. U-18 NATIONAL SQUAD freshman Griffin Dorsey was one of 20 players selected for the U.S. U-18 Men s National Team on Oct. 1. Dorsey started for the U.S. in the match against Belgium on Oct. 5 and played 20 minutes off the bench for the Americans against Russia on Oct. 9. Dorsey is no stranger to the U.S. U-18 squad, having played for the team in tournaments in the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Portugal. IU S 2017 RECRUITING CLASS RANKED NO. 4 IN NATION IU head coach Todd Yeagley signed a highly-touted, 10-member 2017 recruiting class that was ranked No. 4 in the country by both Top Drawer Soccer and College Soccer News. 11 HEAD COACH TODD YEAGLEY TODD YEAGLEY HEAD COACH EIGHTH SEASON Todd Yeagley was named head men s soccer coach on December 18, 2009 and is entering his eighth year as the Hoosiers leader NCAA National Champions In just his third season as head coach, Yeagley led to the 2012 NCAA title, the eighth championship in IU history. The Hoosiers became the first No. 16 seed to win the championship, compiling victories over Xavier, at No. 1 Notre Dame, at No. 9 North Carolina, No. 12 Creighton and No. 3 Georgetown during their tournament run. Yeagley was named 2012 Soccer America Coach of the Year as he and his father Jerry become the only father-son duo to have won Division I men s soccer championships. IU reached the NCAA Tournament Round of 16 for the 36th time in program history. Yeagley saw Tanner Thompson get selected in the MLS SuperDraft by Minnesota United FC, while Richard Ballard signed a professional contract with Louisville City FC. Both Thompson and Grant Lillard earned All-America honors for after stellar seasons. The 2015 season was another successful one for the Hoosiers. The team earned a berth to the NCAA Tournament for the 29th-straight season the 40th overall for the program, posting a record of and reaching the NCAA Tournament Round of 16. Among the highlights of the 2015 season was a 1-0 victory over Wisconsin on October 31, when became the fifth men s soccer program in NCAA Division I history to win 700 games. The Hoosiers are the fastest team to accomplish the feat, reaching the milestone in just 953 matches. UCLA was previously the fastest team to 700, winning in 962 games. IU joins the Bruins, Virginia, Saint Louis and Maryland in the 700-win club. Under Yeagley, Tanner Thompson was named Third-Team All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of American (NSCAA), while also being named the Big Ten Midfielder of the Year. Thompson was a First-Team All-American in Thompson was one of five Hoosiers to earn All-Big Ten honors in Along with Thompson, Femi Hollinger-Janzen and Grant Lillard were named First-Team All-Big Ten. In 2011 the Hoosiers made their fourth-straight trip to the round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament, falling to eventual national champion UNC by a 1-0 score in overtime. 12 Yeagley s first year in 2010 was a memorable one as he led to its first Big Ten regular season title since 2007, as well as its third-consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament round of 16. In Yeagley s first season the Hoosiers saw marked improvement in their offensive production, with forward Will Bruin ranking among the nation s leaders in goals scored with 18. Bruin was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year and was runner-up for the M.A.C. Hermann Trophy, as well as a first-team All-American. Yeagley also took home his first Big Ten Coach of the Year award. Following his inaugural season at the helm, three Hoosier players signed contracts with Major League Soccer. Bruin was the 11th overall pick of the Houston Dynamo, while defender Rich Balchan was taken 12th overall by the Columbus Crew. Midfielder Andy Adlard also signed a contract with the Crew. Yeagley returned to his Hoosier roots after one season as head coach at Wisconsin. At Wisconsin, Yeagley took the helm of a program that had won just one game in conference play the previous year. In Yeagley s year in Madison, the Badgers showed demonstrable improvement as the season rolled along. Wisconsin knocked off three conference opponents with wins over eventual NCAA Tournament teams in Northwestern, Ohio State and Michigan State. The Badgers tied for fourth place in the conference at 3-3 after finishing in last place (1-4-1) the year prior to Yeagley s arrival. During his stint as a student-athlete in Bloomington, Yeagley was a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree. He led the Hoosiers to three Big Ten titles (1991, 1992, 1994) and a overall record. He remains third on IU s career assists list with 40, and shares the Big Ten single-season assists record with the 14 he recorded in After his playing days at, Yeagley also enjoyed a successful seven-year professional career in Major League Soccer with the Columbus Crew. Columbus advanced to the MLS Playoffs in five of Yeagley s seven seasons with the team and won the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in Honors Since returning to his alma mater, Yeagley has produced 11 Major League Soccer Draft picks, two MLS Homegrown signees, 29 All-Big Ten honorees (15 first-team selections) and three Big Ten Player of the Year selections. Under Yeagley s direction the Hoosiers have had 54 Academic All-Big Ten honorees (8-2010; ; ; ; ; ). The Hoosiers have also had a CoSIDA Academic All-District selection in four of his six seasons (2010-Tyler McCarroll; 2011-Harrison Petts; 2012-A.J. Corrado; 2013 A.J. Corrado), as well as a third-team Academic All-America selection in A.J. Corrado (2013). The Hoosiers have been honored with an APR Public Recognition Award five times (2010, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015), and earned a perfect APR score for the season. In 2015, Jack Griffith was given the prestigious Jack D. Tichenor Award, which is given annually to IU s top male and female student-athletes that hold the highest individual cumulative GPA among the entire Department of Athletics. Griffith is the fourth men s soccer student-athlete to earn the Tichenor Award, joining Barry T. Margolin (1987), Christopher Munroe (2005) and threetime winner Tyler McCarroll ( ).
