SPORTS NEWS HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY HEMPSTEAD, NEW YORK ATHLETIC COMMUNICATIONS PHYSICAL FITNESS CENTER (516) FAX: (516) HOFSTRA MEN S BASKETBALL NOTES (1-0, 0-0 CAA) at Notre Dame (1-0), Tuesday, Nov. 22, 7:30 p.m. Hofstra Notre Dame Quick Facts Series Record: Notre Dame leads 6-0 Current Streak: Notre Dame - 6 straight Last Meeting: : Notre Dame 63, Hofstra 52 Hofstra Coach: Tom Pecora (5th year), (56-65 overall) ND Coach: Mike Brey (6th year), ( ) Streaks, Stats, and Storylines: The Pride opened its season with a win over Florida International on Saturday. Hofstra is now 5-1 in its last six season-openers, with the only loss a narrow defeat to nationally ranked Gonzaga in Sophomore guard Antoine Agudio led the Pride with 17 points in its season-opening win over FIU. Agudio has now scored in double figures in 17 straight games. Hofstra s backcourt entering the season is rated as one of the top mid-major backcourts in the country. Junior guard Loren Stokes (18.3 ppg last year) was named preseason first-team All-CAA, while sophomore guard Antoine Agudio (15.1 ppg) was named to the second team. They were the only two non-seniors among the 10 players honored. Junior guard Loren Stokes has 927 points, needing 73 to become the 26th member of the Hofstra 1,000-point club. Sophomore guard Antoine Agudio broke a single-season school record with 82 three-pointers last year as a freshman, putting him on an early pace for 328 in four years. The school record is only 192 (held by Norman Richardson ). Only 11 players in school history have made 100 threepointers in a career, but three more should join that club in the early part of the season. Senior forward Aurimas Kieza has 90, junior guard Carlos Rivera has 87, and sophomore guard Antoine Agudio has 83. The Pride has had some success against the Big East Conference in recent years. Hofstra defeated St. John s last year, and lost a narrow decision at Syracuse. Since , the Pride is 5-6 against the Big East. Hofstra is coming off a Postseason NIT appearance a year ago, when it finished the season The only other time the Pride has appeared in the NIT was in 1999, and it followed that season up with back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances in 2000 and HOFSTRA SCHEDULE/RESULTS (1-0, 0-0 CAA) November 19 FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL W at Notre Dame 7:30 p.m. 29 at St. John s 7 p.m. December 1 BINGHAMTON 7 p.m. 3 DELAWARE* 4 p.m. 7 at Virginia Commonwealth* 7:30 p.m. 14 STONY BROOK 7 p.m. 17 vs. Dartmouth (at MSG) 12 p.m. 22 at St. Francis (N.Y.) 7 p.m. 30 at La Salle 7 p.m. January 5 JAMES MADISON* 7 p.m. 7 GEORGIA STATE* 4 p.m. 12 at Towson* 7 p.m. 14 UNC WILMINGTON* 4 p.m. 19 at Old Dominion* 7 p.m. 21 at Northeastern* 1 p.m. 26 TOWSON* 7 p.m. 28 at Drexel* 4 p.m. February 2 OLD DOMINION* 7 p.m. 4 at Delaware* 2 p.m. 9 at Georgia State* 7 p.m. 11 NORTHEASTERN* 4 p.m. 15 at UNC Wilmington* 7 p.m. 18 ESPN BRACKET BUSTERS TBA 20 at William & Mary* 7 p.m. 23 GEORGE MASON* 7 p.m. 25 DREXEL* 4 p.m. March 3-6 CAA Tournament (Richmond, VA) TBA *CAA Game Hofstra s Tentative Starters Pos. 2 Scouting Notre Dame: The Fighting Irish finished last season with a record and returns three of its starters, including senior guard Chris Quinn (12.6 ppg), junior swingman Colin Falls (12.6 ppg) and senior forward Torin Francis (9.3 ppg, 7.8 rpg). Quinn has been handling point guard duties this season after playing shooting guard his first three years. Notre Dame opened up its season with an home win over Lafayette on Sunday. Hofstra vs. Notre Dame Series: The Fighting Irish has won all six prior meetings between the schools, although they have not played each other since the campaign. The two teams met once in the NCAA Division I Tournament at The Palestra in Philadelphia in 1977, with Notre Dame coming away with a victory. The five meetings since have all taken place in South Bend. Hofstra vs. Notre Dame All-Time Results Notre Dame 63, Hofstra Notre Dame 76, Hofstra Notre Dame 91, Hofstra Notre Dame 61, Hofstra Notre Dame 65, Hofstra Notre Dame 90, Hofstra 83 (NCAA) Coaching Connection: Notre Dame head coach Mike Brey and Hofstra head coach Tom Pecora know each other quite well from their days as rivals in the old America East Conference. Brey served as the head coach at the University of Delaware, while Pecora served as Jay Wright s top assistant at Hofstra. Delaware and Hofstra played each other twice in those years in America East Championship games ( and ), with the Pride emerging victorious both times. Hofstra Against The Big East: The Pride travels to Notre Dame with the knowledge that it has been very competitive in head-to-head games against the Big East in recent seasons. Hofstra has a 5-6 record against the Big East since , and is 2-2 in the last two years. A year ago, the Pride defeated St. John s at home, the first time that the Red Storm had visited Hempstead in 30 years, in front of a sellout crowd at Hofstra Arena. It then traveled to Syracuse, where it took the seventh-ranked Orange down to the final minute of play before finally falling The Pride was within a single point with 20 seconds to go, but Syracuse All-American Hakim Warrick converted a threepoint play to make it a two-possession game. The previous year, Hofstra handed St. John s its second-worst loss ever at Alumni Hall (81-64) and played Providence tough on the road before falling Hofstra Against The Big East (since ) Syracuse 80, Hofstra 75 Hofstra 78, St. John s Hofstra 81, St. John s 64 Providence 69, Hofstra St. John s 84, Hofstra St. John s 89, Hofstra 75 Syracuse 91, Hofstra Hofstra 58, Rutgers 52 Hofstra 86, St. John s Hofstra 65, Rutgers 59 St. John s 98, Hofstra 86 Hofstra Career Milestone Watch Loren Stokes 927 points 73 to 1000 Antoine Agudio 469 points 31 to 500 Carlos Rivera 424 points 76 to 500 Aurimas Kieza 90 three-pointers 10 to 100 Carlos Rivera 87 three-pointers 13 to 100 Antoine Agudio 83 three-pointers 17 to 100 Loren Stokes 186 assists 14 to 200 Last Game Recap (Hofstra 64, FIU 51): Sophomore guard Antoine Agudio (Huntington Station, NY/Walt Whitman) picked up where he left off last season by scoring 17 points as the Hofstra Men's Basketball team overcame a sluggish start to defeat Florida International on Saturday afternoon in its season opener. Agudio, the unanimous Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Year, stepped up after Hofstra fell behind with 7:11 left in the first half. He started a 17-2 run to close out the half with a jumper in the lane, and added a driving lay-up and another jumper to pull the Pride within Once Agudio heated up, the rest of the team followed suit. Freshman forward Arminas Urbutis (Kaunas, Lithuania) came off the bench to make six straight free throws in the final 2:07 of the half to put the Pride up at intermission. Florida International rallied in the second half to pull in front on a banked-in three-pointer from Johwen Villegas. However, Hofstra used a 12-2 run to take control of the game for good at 42-35, capped off by a three-pointer from Agudio, the first for the Pride after it missed its first 12 shots from behind the arc. Agudio was followed by junior guard Carlos Rivera (San German, PR/Miami Christian) with 14 points and freshman guard Greg Johnson (Harlem, NY/Holderness (NH) School) with 12. Johnson stepped up after junior guard Loren Stokes (Buffalo, NY/Turner-Carroll), a first-team All-CAA selection last year, was saddled with early foul trouble and finished with only four points. Senior forward Ivan Almonte led the way for Florida International with 18 points and 10 rebounds, both game highs. Pride In Season Openers: After defeating Florida International on Saturday, Hofstra improved to 5-1 in season openers in the last six years, with the only loss a narrow defeat to nationally ranked Gonzaga in the first game of the season, which came down to the final minute of play before being decided. All-time, Hofstra is in season openers, including in 33 years at the NCAA Division I level. Exhibition Game Recap (Hofstra 70, NYIT 44): Senior forward Adrian Uter (Queens, NY) had a double-double in the first half alone as the Hofstra Men's Basketball team captured a exhibition victory over New York Tech on Tuesday, Nov. 15. The Pride jumped out to a 17-2 lead behind a stifling defense that held New York Tech to only one field goal in its first 16 attempts. The Bears managed to get the score back within 25-20, but Hofstra regrouped and scored the final nine points of the first half and the first 13 of the second half to take a lead. Uter had 13 points and 10 rebounds at the break and finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds in only 16 minutes of playing time. Sophomore guard Antoine Agudio (Huntington Station, NY) led Hofstra with 16 points, while senior forward Aurimas Kieza (Marijampole, Lithuania) had nine points, 10 rebounds and five blocked shots.

Stokes, Agudio Chosen Preseason All-CAA): Junior guard Loren Stokes (Buffalo, NY) was named to the Preseason All-CAA first team and sophomore guard Antoine Agudio (Huntington Station, NY) was named to the second team, in a vote of the league s coaches and media representatives. The two players are quite familiar with earning CAA accolades. A year ago, Agudio a unanimous choice for the CAA Rookie of the Year Award and was named third-team All-CAA. Stokes, meanwhile, was named first-team All-CAA and was chosen to the CAA All-Defensive team. Stokes, in fact, was the runner-up for the CAA Player of the Year award, falling 25 points behind Old Dominion s Alex Loughton (575 to 550). Agudio, meanwhile, earned 41 of a possible 41 votes for the CAA Rookie of the Year honor. In addition, Stokes was named the CAA Player of the Week four times and Agudio won the CAA Rookie of the Week eight times. No other player in the conference won either award more than twice. Preseason CAA All-Conference Selections First Team Jose Juan Barea Nick George Alex Loughton Harding Nana Loren Stokes Second Team Antoine Agudio Lamar Butler John Goldsberry Isaiah Hunter Jai Lewis Northeastern Virginia Commonwealth Old Dominion Delaware Hofstra Hofstra George Mason UNC Wilmington Old Dominion George Mason Hofstra Picked Fourth In CAA Poll: Hofstra was picked to finish fourth in the 12-team CAA in a vote of the league s coaches and media representatives. Defending champion Old Dominion was picked first, Virginia Commonwealth second and George Mason third. The Pride has also been picked as high as second in preseason publications after finishing fourth last winter. Hofstra Has Guarded Optimism: Hofstra enters the season with an optimistic outlook, thanks to the return of one of the nation s top backcourts. Junior guard Loren Stokes (Buffalo, NY) and sophomore guard Antoine Agudio (Huntington Station, NY) were the catalysts behind the Pride s 21-9 record last season and were both named to the Preseason All-CAA team (Stokes on the first team, Agudio on the second team). Stokes (18.3 ppg) and Agudio (15.1 ppg) accounted for nearly half of the Pride s points last year (1001 of 2156, 46.2 pct) and scored in double figures in 56 out of 60 possible games between them (Stokes 28-of-30, Agudio 28-of-30). They also accounted for 40 percent or more of the Pride s points in 28 of 30 games, including each of the last 18, and accounted for 56.5 percent of Hofstra s points in the CAA Tournament (83 of 147). Both Stokes and Agudio could average 20 points per game this season, but the biggest obstacle standing in their way could be a healthy Carlos Rivera (San German, PR). Rivera averaged 10.8 points per game as a freshman in before a knee injury cut short his season, and he suffered complications with the knee last year that slowed him down. He s fully healthy this season, and is expected to pick up some of the scoring burden. Agudio Sets New Three-Point Record: Sophomore guard Antoine Agudio (Huntington Station, NY) entered the 2005 Postseason NIT tied for the school record with 81 threepointers and broke the mark with a second-half trey against Saint Joseph s. The record of 81 was originally set by Demetrius Dudley in (see chart below). Agudio has also threatened the single-game school record of seven on numerous occasions, including six in a home win over William & Mary, which tied a freshman record. Hofstra Single-Season Three-Point FG Leaders Name Year 3FG 1) Antoine Agudio ) Demetrius Dudley ) Carlos Dicenta ) Rick Apodaca ) Norman Richardson ) Frank Walker ) Jason Hernandez ) John Mavroukas ) Norman Richardson ) Keith McMillan A Three-For-All: Only 11 players in Hofstra history have made 100 three-pointers in a career, but that list will almost certainly become much more crowded this winter. Three current members of the Pride are within 17 treys of reaching the century mark, and all three should be making a move up the career three-point charts all winter long. Senior forward Aurimas Kieza (Marijampole, Lithuania) has 90 three-pointers, junior guard Carlos Rivera (San German, PR) has 87, and sophomore guard Antoine Agudio (Huntington Station, NY) now has 83 after breaking the school single-season record last year with 82. The three players should give the Pride arguably the most potent three-point shooting line-up in its history. He picked right up where he left off a year ago, when he earned a spot on the CAA All-Tournament team after matching his career high with 22 points in a loss to eventual champion Old Dominion in the semifinals. He also led Hofstra in scoring with 16 points in its loss to Saint Joseph s in the Postseason NIT. He has now scored in double figures in 17 straight games, dating back to an eight-point game at Virginia Commonwealth on Jan. 15 of last year. He has also scored in double figures in 29 of his 31 collegiate appearances.

Agudio On Historic Pace: Sophomore guard Antoine Agudio (Huntington Station, NY) is well on his way to becoming one of the most prolific three-point shooters in CAA history. Agudio made a school-record 82 threepointers last season, putting him on an early pace for 324 in his career, which would shatter the school record of 192, held by Norman Richardson ( ). Only four players in CAA history have made 300 three-pointers in a career, led by conference record holder Brett Blizzard of UNC Wilmington (371). Phil Goss of Drexel joined the 300-club in the Dragons regular season finale last year and finished his career with 307. The other two former CAA players with 300 treys are Mark Poag of Old Dominion (328) and Kent Culuko of James Madison (320). George Mason s Lamar Butler is on pace to join the elite group this season as well. Top Scoring Freshmen: Antoine Agudio (Huntington Station, NY) finished the season averaging 15.1 ppg, making him the third highest freshman scorer in school history. His 15.1 points per game made him the highest scoring rookie at Hofstra in 25 years, since David Taylor averaged 17.6 in the season. Rich Laurel holds the school record for a freshman with 19.3 ppg, set during the campaign. Stokes older brother Leonard was a four-year standout at Cincinnati, where he once scored 39 points in an NCAA Tournament game against UCLA and was named second-team All-Conference USA. Agudio s father, Alex, meanwhile, was a key player on Niagara s 1987 NIT team and still holds the school record for steals in a season (77). Stokes In The CAA: Junior guard Loren Stokes (Buffalo, NY) ranked in the top 10 in the CAA in scoring, rebounding, assists and steals last season. He finished a close second in the CAA scoring race with 18.3 points per game (0.2 behind Harding Nana of Delaware), while also ranking ninth in rebounding (6.1 rpg), sixth in assists (3.5 apg) and second in steals (1.8 spg). He was one of only three players in the nation who ranked in the top 10 in their conference in all four of those categories last winter, joining Kevin Hamilton of Holy Cross (Patriot League) and David Moss of Indiana State (Missouri Valley). Stokes had the CAA scoring lead heading into the Postseason NIT, but Saint Joseph s held him to eight points, dropping him 0.2 ppg behind Nana. Fillin Up The Box Score: Junior guard Loren Stokes (Buffalo, NY) contributed to the Pride in a variety of ways last season. Stokes led Hofstra in scoring in two out of three games (20-of-30) which is a normal ratio for a team s leading scorer. Stokes, though, also led the Pride in rebounding 13 times, in assists 13 times and in steals 15 times. There was even one game last year when he led the Pride in all four categories in the same day (20 points, eight rebounds, six assists, four steals in a road win at Dartmouth). Stokes Named To Mid-Major All-America Team: Junior guard Loren Stokes (Buffalo, NY) was one of 15 players chosen to the College Insider Preseason Mid-Major All- America team. Stokes was also named to the Mid-Major All-America team last year by College Insider, which also has Hofstra ranked 20 th in the country in its preseason Mid- Major top 25. Livin On The Line: Junior guard Loren Stokes (Buffalo, NY) made a living on the foul line last season for the Pride. Stokes was at the charity stripe, averaging over seven attempts from the line per game. The closest teammate was sophomore guard Antoine Agudio (Huntington Station, NY) with 76, a number that Stokes almost tripled. Stokes Unmasked: Junior guard Loren Stokes (Buffalo, NY) had an off day in the Pride s season opener against Florida International on Saturday. Stokes started out the game with a plastic mask to protect a nose injury, but then entered the game late in the first half without the mask. Early foul trouble may have also sidetracked Stokes, who picked up three offensive fouls in the first half and finished with only four points. That was his lowest scoring output as a starter (53 games) after scoring in double figures 49 times in his first 52 starting assignments. Johnson Has Immediate Impact: Hofstra entered this season knowing that its high-powered backcourt was its strength, led by junior Loren Stokes (Buffalo, NY) and sophomore Antoine Agudio (Huntington Station, NY). With Stokes in early foul trouble, though, the opportunity presented itself for freshman Greg Johnson (Harlem, NY) to earn some valuable playing time. Johnson stepped up in a big way, scoring 12 much-needed points off the bench on 4-of-6 shooting from the floor. He scored seven of his points during a pivotal second-half stretch that saw the Pride increase its lead from to 53-40, capping off the run with his first career three-pointer.

Uter Hosts Block Party: Senior forward Adrian Uter (Queens, NY) had a spectacular defensive performance in the Pride s win over Towson last year on Feb. 16, blocking nine shots in 15 minutes. The nine swats fell just one shy of the school record of 10, set by Greg Springfield against New Mexico State in the 1999 Preseason NIT. As a team, the Pride tied a school record with 14 blocks against Towson, matching the total set in that New Mexico State game, which Hofstra lost Uter finished with 60 blocks on the season, ranking him in third place on the Pride s single-season list, five shy of the school record held by David Taylor. Hofstra All-Time Single-Season Block Leaders Name Years Blocks 1) David Taylor ) Roberto Gittens ) Adrian Uter ) Greg Springfield ) Charles Minor Urbutis Comes Through At Line: If the first game of the season is any indication, Arminas Urbutis (Kaunas, Lithuania) last name might translate into English as automatic. Urbutis was a perfect 6-6 at the foul line in his collegiate debut against Florida International on Saturday, making all six in the final 2:07 of the first half. Those six points enabled the Pride to surge in front at the break and go on to a win. Fast Starts: Hofstra would love nothing more than to begin this season in a similar fashion to how it began the campaign. The Pride s 9-0 start last season marked the best start that the program has ever had in its 32 years at the NCAA Division I level, eclipsing the 6-0 standard set by the team. It was the best start for the Pride at any level since the squad began the year 10-0 while playing in the NCAA Small College Division under legendary head coach Butch van Breda Kolff. The Pride started a school-record 12-0 in the season, which was van Breda Kolff s first season at the helm. Here is a list of the six seasons when the Pride has won at least nine games in a row to start the year, the last five of which have resulted in at least 20 wins: Hofstra s All-Time Best Starts Season Start Final Rec. Coach Tom Pecora Butch van Breda Kolff Butch van Breda Kolff Butch van Breda Kolff Frank Reilly Frank Reilly Hofstra Back In The Postseason: Hofstra made its sixth Division I postseason appearance by earning its secondever Postseason NIT bid last year. The Pride was assigned a road game at Saint Joseph s, which captured a win on its way to reaching the NIT Championship game. The Pride s other NIT appearance came in 1999, when it dropped a first round game to Rutgers. Following its 1999 NIT invitation, Hofstra then earned consecutive NCAA bids in 2000 and 2001, its first since back-to-back bids in 1976 and Pride Reaches Milestone Win: Hofstra s win over eventual CAA champion Old Dominion last Feb. 23 was the 1000 th in the history of the program, which was founded in Hofstra s all-time record currently stands at (.571) in its 67 years of existence (not counting two years during WWII). Getting Better All The Time: The Hofstra Men s Basketball team joined the Colonial Athletic Association in , on the heels of an America East Conference championship in the season (when it finished 26-5). That team had seven seniors on it, though, leaving Hofstra without a senior on the entire roster as it ventured into a new conference. The Pride s inaugural season in the CAA saw it finish in last place at 5-13 in conference play, although it made a deep CAA Tournament run to the semifinals before falling to VCU. The following year saw the Pride improve to 6-12 in conference play (ninth place), while the campaign saw Hofstra surge above.500 to a 10-8 finish, good for fifth place. Last year, the Pride s record jumped to 12-6 in the CAA, ending the regular season tied for fourth place. Drama At The Arena: Hofstra Arena has been home to some dramatic games in recent seasons, including a triple-overtime thriller against James Madison last year on Wednesday, Feb. 9. In fact, of the Pride s nine CAA home games last season, four were decided in overtime or by two or fewer points, while five of its nine CAA home games were decided by four points or less. Here is a look at some of the recent nail-biters that the Pride has had in CAA games at Hofstra Arena over the last two years: Close CAA Games At Hofstra Arena Date Opponent Result Feb. 9 James Madison W (3 OT) Feb. 2 Va. Commonwealth W Jan. 19 Old Dominion L Jan. 8 Drexel L (OT) Feb. 21 James Madison W Feb. 7 Old Dominion W Feb. 4 Delaware W Jan. 28 Drexel L Jan. 17 UNC Wilmington L Saved By The Buzzer: During the Tom Pecora era, tying or winning shots at the buzzer have usually not been successful for either team, including Old Dominion s missed three-pointer at the buzzer in the Pride s win on Feb. 23. Current junior Carlos Rivera (San German, PR) defeated Columbia with a three-pointer at the buzzer last season (58-55), but that is the only time that a meaningful buzzer-beater has managed to connect in a Hofstra game in the last four seasons. Pecora s first three coaching victories back in , in fact, came when opponents missed shots at the buzzer (including an overtime win over Illinois State when the Redbirds missed buzzer beaters in regulation and overtime). Overall, Hofstra (1-9) and its opponents (0-10) have combined to shoot only 1-19 on potential tying or winning last-second shots over the last four years (not counting desperation shots of 30 feet or more).

Pride Signs Three In Early Period: The Hofstra Men s Basketball team signed three players in the fall signing period. The three players include 6-7 power forward Mantas Leonavicius (Vilnius, Lithuania/Statesville (N.C.) Christian) 6-2 guard Sal Patricio (Queens, NY/Florida Prep Academy), and 6-10 forward Greg Washington (Islip, NY/Winchendon Prep School). Mantas Leonavicius is a 6-7 power forward from Vilnius, Lithuania, who is currently playing at Statesville Christian High School in North Carolina. He was high school teammates with current Hofstra swingman Zygis Sestokas at Statesville Christian last year, and also played with Sestokas at Sarunas Marciulionis' sports academy in Lithuania before coming to the United States. He is the fourth Lithuanian to sign with the Pride, along with current senior Aurimas Kieza (Marijampole, Lithuania) and current freshman Arminas Urbutis (Kaunas, Lithuania). Sal Patricio is playing his second season at Florida Prep Academy after previously starring at Bryant High School in Queens. Patricio averaged 30 points per game at Bryant, while earning second-team All-Queens honors from the Daily News. He was a third-team All-Florida selection in and is rated the 18th best prospect in the state of Florida by Florida Hoops. Greg Washington is attending Winchendon Prep School after previously playing at nearby Central Islip High School on Long Island. He was ranked among the top 300 recruits in the nation by Hoop Scoop, and was selected to represent Suffolk in the Fourth Annual Coaches vs. Cancer All-Star game last summer. The Pride loses four seniors after this season and still has one scholarship available to use for the spring. "We are extremely excited about the addition of these three fine young men to our program," said Hofstra head coach Tom Pecora. "We expect all of them will have a tremendous impact at the college level, and our entire coaching staff looks forward to having these three young men join the Hofstra family." Chairmen Of The Boards: The Pride has developed a reputation as an exceptionally strong rebounding team in recent years. Hofstra led the CAA in rebounding margin in each of its first three seasons in the league (+4.0 in , +6.1 in , +5.5 in ), after also leading the America East Conference the previous year in Since the start of the Tom Pecora era in , Hofstra has been outrebounded only 35 times in 121 games (28.7 percent of the time). Last year the Pride utilized a smaller three-guard line-up most of the season and was outrebounded 12 times, the highest total in the last five years (see below). However, the Pride still ranked second in the conference in rebounding margin, barely ending its streak of four straight conference rebounding titles. Florida International held a narrow edge on the boards on Saturday. Hofstra s Battle Of the Boards ( ) Year Games HU Opp. Even Totals Home, Sweet Home: Hofstra defeated Florida International in its season opener in Hempstead on Saturday and is now all-time at Hofstra Arena since the building opened on January 2, The Pride is also in its last 84 home games, dating back to the season in the old Physical Fitness Center. Hofstra is 15-2 in its last 17 home games, with both of the losing coming down to the final shot (including a loss to eventual champion Old Dominion on Jan. 19). Odds And Ends: Some strange, unusual, and sometimes relevant facts regarding Hofstra basketball: Defense Tells The Story: Hofstra is 47-2 in the last 49 games when it has held its opponents to less than 60 points, after defeating Florida International on Saturday. In a strange coincidence, both losses in that stretch have been in the Postseason NIT, a loss to Saint Joseph s last year and a loss to Rutgers in 1999 the only two NIT appearances in school history. In regular season games, Hofstra has won 58 in a row when holding opponents below 60. Then Again, So Does Offense: The Pride is 28-2 the last 30 times it has scored 80 or more points. In another strange coincidence, both defeats in that stretch have been home losses to Drexel, including an overtime defeat last year on Jan. 8. The Dragons also won at Hofstra in Closing Time: Hofstra is 98-4 since when leading with 2:00 to play. Remarkably, two of those four losses came in consecutive home games last year, including a Jan. 19 loss to Old Dominion (67-66) and a Jan. 8 loss to Drexel (84-81, OT). Beyond The Arc: Hofstra has made at least one threepointer in 259 straight games, dating back to a loss at Boston University in The Pride s streak was in jeopardy against Florida International on Sunday, but Antoine Agudio finally knocked one down with 8:45 to play in the second half. Working Overtime: Hofstra is 9-1 in its last 10 overtime games, after defeating James Madison in triple overtime last year, the first triple-overtime game in school history. Last season s loss to Drexel was the first overtime loss for the Pride since Starting The Week Off Right: Over the last two seasons, the Pride is a perfect 7-0 when playing on a Monday or a Tuesday (4-0 on Mondays, 3-0 on Tuesdays). Hofstra will put that stat to the test with back-to-back Tuesday road games at Big East schools (Nov. 22 at Notre Dame, Nov. 29 at St. John s). Steal Away: Hofstra had 12 steals in its season-opening win over Florida International on Sunday. It was also 8-0 last year when it had 10 or more steals, and has won 13 straight games dating back to when reaching double figures in steals.
