5 HOFSTRA MEN'S BASKETBALL PRESEASON OUTLOOK There is little doubt that the Hofstra Men's Basketball team is looking forward to beginning the season with a clean slate. After a season which saw Hofstra players miss a combined 103 games due to injuries or suspensions on its way to an 8-21 record, the Pride comes into a new campaign eager to start fresh and get the program pointed back in the right direction. There is plenty of reason for optimism for Hofstra Head Coach Tom Pecora and his staff. Last year's injuries and suspensions primarily effected the senior class, which forced the team's younger players to gain more experience. In fact, Hofstra played most of the season with four sophomores in the starting lineup, and those players now represent arguably the most experienced nucleus in the Colonial Athletic Association, despite the fact that they are still only juniors. Senior forward Danny Walker, who missed all of last season with a severe ankle injury, is back this year to provide the team with some strong leadership. Junior forward Kenny Adeleke, meanwhile, is coming off a season which saw him rank eighth in the nation in rebounding, and Hofstra hopes he is on the verge of becoming one of the most dominant mid-major players in the country. The Pride was one of the top rebounding teams in the nation last year and was in the top half of the CAA in field goal percentage defense. Its biggest weakness was in scoring (64.1 points per game), and the Pride's recruiting efforts have helped addressed that need. This year's freshman class features three guards, all of whom had reputations as top-flight scorers in high school, which the Hofstra coaching staff hopes will give the team more scoring options this season. Following is a position-by-position look at the Hofstra Men's Basketball team, heading into the season: GUARDS Hofstra loses its leading scorer in shooting guard Rick Apodaca, who averaged 18.1 points in 15 games last winter. Apodaca, though, missed the first half of the season while serving a suspension for violation of university policy, enabling the Pride to adjust to playing without him in the line-up. The starting backcourt in his absence was junior point guard Woody Souffrant and junior swingman Michael Radziejewski (pictured at right), a duo which figures to take up the first-team guard spots heading into preseason practice. Souffrant improved significantly as a sophomore a year ago, averaging 8.7 points and 4.5 assists a game and showing the ability to be a solid scorer at the Division I level. Souffrant has been running the Hofstra offense for most of his first two seasons and his experience at the point is a definite plus for the Pride this winter. Radziejewski became a lethal three-point shooter over the second half of the season, making nine consecutive shots from beyond the arc at one point. He averaged 9.8 points per game last year and will be the team's top long-range threat this winter, while playing both the shooting guard and small forward positions. There will be plenty of depth in the backcourt this year. Sophomore Gibran Washington handled the back-up point guard duties last season, averaging 3.2 points and 1.5 assists, and also provided some tenacious defense. The Pride's freshman class should also help immediately in the backcourt as well. Carlos Rivera and Loren Stokes both attended prep school for a season at Bridgton Academy and St. Thomas More, respectively, making them a year older than most incoming freshman. Rivera, who averaged 22 ppg to lead his Miami Christian High School team to a 38-2 record and a Florida State title in , can play either guard position effectively and has tremendous range. Stokes averaged 25 points at Turner/Carroll High School in Buffalo before attending St. Thomas More. He is a pure scorer, capable of shooting from the perimeter or off the dribble. Finally, Antoine Agudio committed to the Pride in the spring signing period after averaging 23.8 points, eight rebounds and four assists at Walt Whitman High School on Long Island. Agudio led his Whitman team to a Long Island Championship and a berth in the New York State semifinals.

6 FORWARDS A pair of graduates from Robeson High School in Brooklyn, N.Y., are expected to handle the starting forward positions this winter. Senior small forward Danny Walker (7.8 ppg, 6.1 rpg in ) went down with a severe ankle sprain before practice even began last year, forcing him to miss the entire season. He will be the Pride's only senior this winter and will be counted on to provide leadership. Walker has added around 20 pounds of muscle since the season and is expected to see some time at both forward spots with his added strength. A quick leaper and solid defender, Walker is comfortable fighting down low for rebounds as well as shooting from the perimeter. Junior power forward Kenny Adeleke, meanwhile, was forced to step up in the early part of the season with Apodaca out of the line-up, giving him valuable experience as the team's top scoring option. Adeleke finished the season with 16.1 points and 11.0 rebounds per game, making him the first player to average a double-double at Hofstra in over 20 years. The 11.0 rebounds per game ranked him eighth in the nation last season and included two games with 20 rebounds. Adeleke has continually improved his low-post scoring ability during his career and is gradually developing more and more range on his jump shot. If he continues to improve his offensive repertoire, he has the potential to be a strong All-American candidate before his career is over. Hofstra's depth at the forward positions will be provided by returning sophomores Aurimas Kieza and Omar Alston. Kieza averaged 5.5 points a game last season, including 10 or more points in five of his first six collegiate games. He can step out and knock down the three-pointer, and can also finish plays around the basket. Alston, meanwhile, averaged 3.1 points and 2.7 rebounds before missing the final seven games with a foot injury. A wide-body with a variety of low post moves, Alston can also step outside and knock down the three, providing a difficult match-up problem when he moves to the center position. Freshman Brian Sisti will also be in the hunt for frontcourt minutes after averaging a double-double (18 points, 14 rebounds) at Northport High School on Long Island last winter. Hofstra has the flexibility of moving Radziejewski to the small forward position to get additional backcourt quickness and perimeter scoring in the line-up. Radziejewski began last season at the shooting guard spot, but moved to small forward after Apodaca returned from suspension. Stokes could also see some time at small forward in a smaller line-up. CENTER Junior Wendell Gibson joined Apodaca in serving a 14-game suspension for violation of university policy at the start of last season. He returned to play in the final 15 games, averaging 6.1 points and 6.0 rebounds. A classic back-to-the-basket center, Gibson has a variety of low post moves and can also face the basket out to 18 feet. Alston will also see time at center, and the Pride may also have the option of playing Adeleke at center in a smaller, quicker line-up, especially if one or more of its freshmen guards prove to be ready for significant playing time. SCHEDULE This year's schedule may very well be the toughest that any Hofstra Men's Basketball team has ever played. The Pride has a three-game early-season stretch in which it plays at Providence, at Maryland and at St. John's. In addition, should Hofstra win its opening round Preseason NIT game at Marist, it would also likely play at Georgia Tech (if the Yellow Jackets defeat Louisiana-Lafayette in its opening round game). Hofstra also has a road game at Manhattan, which finished 23-7 last season and captured the MAAC championship, and an always-difficult 18-game CAA conference schedule. OVERVIEW At one point last season, Hofstra's injury problems were so bad that it had more scholarship players out of action on the sidelines than it had available to play. The Pride's rotation almost never looked the same from one game to the next, and at times the coaching staff was forced to rely almost exclusively on freshmen and sophomores, especially in the first half of the season while senior guard Rick Apodaca was under suspension. In short, the pieces to the puzzle were all there for the Pride, but they never all seemed to be on the table at the same time. Although may have been a season that the Hofstra program would like to leave behind, there is also the hope that the hard knocks the Pride took last winter will result in a tougher, more experienced squad this season. Last year, sophomores were asked to be team leaders and freshmen were asked to contribute more than they were prepared for. This year, though, those players will have the benefit of more game experience than most of their counterparts on other teams. With the senior leadership of Danny Walker, a nucleus of four juniors who are all used to starting roles, and a talented incoming freshman class, this could certainly be a season that sees the pieces come together for the Pride, instead of breaking apart.

8 TOM PECORA - HEAD COACH Tom Pecora is entering his third season as the Head Coach of the Hofstra Men's Basketball program and his 10th season at Hofstra overall. He was named the 10th Head Coach in Pride history when he accepted the position on March 28, 2001 after spending the previous seven years as an assistant, the final two of which resulted in back-to-back America East Conference championships and NCAA Tournament berths. In his first season at the helm in , Pecora led a young Pride team to a berth in the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament semifinals in the program's first season in the CAA. Among his victories was a three-point victory over Kent State, which went on to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. Pecora first joined the Pride staff in as an assistant under first-year head coach Jay Wright. Over the next seven years, Pecora had an integral role in building Hofstra up into one of the top mid-major programs in the country. The Pride had a combined record over the and seasons, ranking it sixth in the nation in winning percentage over that span (.806). His efforts as an Assistant Coach culminated in a 26-5 record in , when the Pride tied the school record for most wins in a season. After his first four seasons as an Assistant Coach, Pecora was promoted to Associate Head Coach in Under his direction as recruiting coordinator, the Pride was consistently recognized as having the top recruiting classes in both the America East Conference and the East by publications such as Eastern Basketball and Hoop Scoop. In the fall of 2000, recruiting analyst Clark Francis referred to Hofstra's class as "the steal of the early signing period" in USA Today. In addition to his duties as recruiting coordinator, Pecora served as Hofstra's director of scouting, scheduling coordinator and was responsible for the individual development of post players. Pecora also had previous experience in running a program, serving as head basketball coach at the State University of New York at Farmingdale from In three seasons at Farmingdale, the Rams posted a record, captured the Region 15 championship in 1992 (when they finished 20-9), advanced to the National Junior College Athletic Association Tournament and were ranked as one of the nation's top 20 junior college programs. He quickly built the program up from an record in his first season ( ) to a 24-4 record in Along the way, Pecora coached two junior college All-Americans, Sam Rowe (1990) and Arthur Anderson (1991). Pecora came to Hofstra in 1994 after serving as assistant coach/recruiting coordinator under John Olive at Loyola Marymount during the basketball season. He also served as an assistant, along with Jay Wright, to Rollie Massimino at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas in Pecora entered the coaching profession as an assistant to Bob McKillop at Long Island Lutheran High School from 1984 through Pecora then served as an assistant coach to Stu Klein at Nassau Community College in Garden City from 1987 through During his tenure at Nassau Community College, the Lions posted back-to-back 25-win seasons and in 1989 played in the National Junior College Athletic Association Tournament for the only time in school history. A native of Queens Village, New York, Pecora attended Martin Van Buren High School before moving on to Adelphi University, where he graduated in 1983 with a bachelor's in physical education and health. He was inducted into Adelphi's Hall of Fame in Pecora is also a familiar figure in the community, as he is actively involved with several charities, including Coaches vs. Cancer, Wheelchair Charities, Father Hartman's Christa House, the Dante Foundation and several others. He co-chairs the annual Coaches vs. Cancer Golf Tournament on Long Island for the benefit of the American Cancer Society. He also organizes free summer basketball clinics for children at several Long Island area recreation centers. Pecora and his wife, the former Mary Beth Cantwell, reside in Williston Park, New York, with their daughters, Amanda (12) and Brianna (7), and their son, Sean (1).
