Pride Receives Votes In Preseason Poll: Hofstra enters the season in contention for a spot in the national top 25. The ESPN/USA Today coaches poll had Hofstra in the also receiving votes category with 20 points, essentially ranking the Pride 35 th in the nation. The Associated Press, poll, meanwhile, gave the Pride 24 points, putting it 34 th in the nation. Hofstra Third In Mid-Major Poll: Hofstra was ranked third in the preseason collegeinsider.com mid-major poll, it was announced on Tuesday. Creighton, which was nationally ranked in both the USA Today and Associated Press poll, was given the top spot, while Gonzaga was ranked second. Four CAA teams were ranked in all, including George Mason at #7, Drexel at #15 and Old Dominion at #21. Lithuanian Connection: Hofstra features three players on its roster this season from Lithuania. Forward Arminas Urbutis (Kaunas, Lithuania) and swingman Zygis Sestokas (Vilnius, Lithuania) came to Hempstead last year. Urbutis played for two seasons at Montverde Academy in Florida, while Sestokas played at Statesville Christian High School in North Carolina. Forward Mantas Leonavicius (Vilnius, Lithuania), who also played at Statesville Christian where he was teammates with Sestokas, joined the Pride this year. Graduated forward Aurimas Kieza was Hofstra s first Lithuanian, playing for the Pride from , and averaging 11.1 points per game last season. Home, Sweet Home: Hofstra had a 21-game home winning streak snapped in the NIT quarterfinals by Old Dominion last year, which ranked second in the nation at the time behind Gonzaga. The Pride s last loss at Hofstra Arena was a defeat to Old Dominion on Jan. 19, 2005 (when the Pride missed a potential winning shot at the buzzer). The 18-game streak gives Hofstra the third-longest active home winning streak in the nation through Monday s games The Pride is all-time at the renamed Mack Sports Complex since the building opened on January 2, The Pride is also in its last 97 overall home games, dating back to in the old Physical Fitness Center, where it won its final 16 games before it switched facilities. Hofstra also won its first 10 games at Hofstra Arena in to stretch its home court win streak to 26 games, which ranked as the third-longest in the nation at that time. The Big 2-0: Hofstra comes into the season after reaching the 20-win plateau in each of the last two seasons. The Pride has reached 20 wins seven times at the NCAA Division I level, including five times in the last eight years with Tom Pecora on the staff (the last two as a head coach, the first three as an assistant to Jay Wright). Hofstra 20-Win Seasons Division I Year Rec. Coach Roger Gaeckler Butch van Breda Kolff Jay Wright Jay Wright Jay Wright Tom Pecora Tom Pecora Getting Better All The Time: The Hofstra Men s Basketball team has improved its CAA record every season since joining the league in , one year after winning an America East Conference championship in the season. That team had seven seniors on it, though, leaving Hofstra without a senior on the entire roster as it ventured into a new conference. The Pride s inaugural season in the CAA saw it finish tenth at 5-13 in conference play, although it reached the semifinals of the CAA Tournament. The following year saw the Pride improve to 6-12 in league play (ninth place), while the campaign saw Hofstra surge above.500 to a 10-8 finish, good for fifth place. Last year, the Pride s CAA record jumped to 12-6, tying it for fourth place, while this year s team is currently 12-4 and in third, needing one more conference win to guarantee yet another improvement. Hofstra s Conference Records - CAA Year CAA Record Place Overall Rec rd th th th th Hofstra Earns Third Straight Win Over St. John s: Junior guard Loren Stokes (Buffalo, NY) had 19 points and the Hofstra defense held St. John's to only 11 points in the second half as it pulled away for a win on Nov. 29 at Carnesecca Arena. Hofstra did not allow a point in the final 8:06 of the contest as it closed with a 14-0 run. Hofstra s starting five played the entire second half and held St. John s to only 11 points after intermission, the Pride s best defensive half during the shot clock era (since ). St. John s has long been known as the premier college basketball program in the New York metropolitan area, but the Pride has been able to perhaps steal the crown of late. St. John s completely dominated the series in the 1900 s, winning all 19 meetings. In the 2000 s, though, the Pride has won four of the six meetings, including the last three in a row (all three coming by double-digit margins). Hofstra first broke through in December of 2000, when it captured an win at Nassau Coliseum. St. John s bounced back to win the next two meetings, but Hofstra went into Alumni Hall in and came away with an win, the second-worst loss that the Red Storm has ever suffered at its on-campus facility. The Pride added a win at Hofstra Arena in

In a strange coincidence, both losses in that stretch have been in the Postseason NIT, a loss to Saint Joseph s in 2005 and a loss to Rutgers in It almost happened again last year in the NIT, but Old Dominion hit enough foul shots in the final minute to capture a win over the Pride in the quarterfinals. Hofstra has won 66 regular season games in a row when holding opponents below 60. Just Give Us The Damn Ball: Hofstra won the opening tap a remarkable 28 times in 33 games last season. It won the tap a remarkable 18 straight times, before seeing the streak snapped in the NIT quarterfinals against Old Dominion. Homewreckers: Hofstra won 21 straight home games over the and seasons before seeing the streak end with a loss to Old Dominion. The Pride s last previous home loss was also to Old Dominion on Jan. 19, However, turnabout is fair play as Old Dominion also has a 28-2 home record over the last two seasons. The team that has given it both home losses? Hofstra. The Pride defeated the Monarchs on Senior Day in to ruin the Monarchs perfect 14-0 home record, then won at the Constant Convocation Center again last year. Closing Time: Hofstra is since when leading with 2:00 to play. Two of those four losses came in consecutive home games in , including a Jan. 19 loss to Old Dominion (67-66) and a Jan. 8 loss to Drexel (84-81, OT). Beyond The Arc: Hofstra has made at least one three-pointer in 290 straight games, dating back to a loss at Boston University in The Pride s streak was in jeopardy against Florida International on opening day last season, but Antoine Agudio finally knocked one down with 8:45 to play. Working Overtime: Hofstra is 11-1 in its last 12 overtime games, after defeating Drexel in overtime on Jan. 28. An loss to Drexel at home in was the first overtime loss for the Pride since the season. The Pride has won a pair of CAA tripleovertime games in the last two years, a win over UNC Wilmington last year and a win over James Madison in , the longest games in school history. Who Figured A Half-Hour Could Matter So Much?: Hofstra had a 26-7 record on the season. Strangely, it was 0-3 in games that started at 7:30 p.m., instead of the normal 7 p.m. start time. Saved By The Buzzer: Hofstra s Aurimas Kieza accomplished a rare feat under Head Coach Tom Pecora when he made a game-winning buzzer-beater on Feb. 2 vs. Old Dominion. Over Pecora s five seasons, only two meaningful buzzer-beaters have gone in, with a game-winning three-pointer from Carlos Rivera against Columbia in being the other. Overall, Hofstra (2-13) and opponents (0-12) have combined to shoot 2-25 on meaningful buzzer-beaters in the Pecora Era, good for a rather underwhelming eight percent shooting. That figure does not even count desperation shots of 30+ feet. Steal Away: Hofstra had 11 steals in its win over Towson on Jan. 26. The Pride has now won 17 straight games dating back to when reaching double figures in steals (including 5-0 last season).
