HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY MEN S BASKETBALL GAME NOTES Hofstra (6-0) vs. Dartmouth (3-3) Friday, Dec. 17, 7 p.m. Hanover, NH Leede Arena (2,100) TV/Radio: WRHU (88.7 FM) Streaks, Stats, and Storylines: Hofstra s 6-0 start ties it with the team for the best start in the Pride s 32 years at the NCAA Division I level. Hofstra has not begun a year 7-0 since in the NCAA Small College Division, when it opened the season Its best start at any level was 12-0 in under legendary head coach Butch van Breda Kolff. Hofstra is coming off a win over St. John s on Saturday, which was the Pride s third win in its last five meetings with the Red Storm. Sophomore guard Loren Stokes (19.8 ppg) has scored in double figures in 21 straight games, and 26 of 27 after becoming a starter on Dec. 23, 2003 against Saint Peter s. He tallied a season-high 24 in Saturday s win over St. John s. Hofstra is one of 18 teams left in the country that are still undefeated through Sunday s games. Only three of the 18 are mid-majors (Hofstra, Wichita State, Oral Roberts). Loren Stokes and Antoine Agudio have combined to score at least 34 points in each of the Pride s first six games. The duo also has 223 of Hofstra s 458 points this year (48.7 pct). Loren Stokes was named the CAA Co-Player of the Week Monday, while Antoine Agudio earned his third Rookie of the Week honor in the first four weeks of the season. Agudio has already tied the CAA record for the most Rookie of the Week awards in an entire season. Hofstra needs 12 more wins this season to reach 1,000 in the history of the program. 2 Scouting Dartmouth: The Big Green comes into Friday s game with a 3-3 record on the season under first-year head coach Terry Dunn. The three wins already match what Dartmouth had in all of last season, when it finished The Big Green has a balanced offense, without a single player averaging in double figures through the first six games. Junior guard Mike Lang leads the squad with 9.5 points per game despite coming off the bench in each of the first six contests. Senior center David Gardner averages 9.2 points, while junior forward Calvin Arnold averages 7.7 points and a team-high 5.8 rebounds. Hofstra vs. Dartmouth Series: Dartmouth holds a 5-1 lead in the all-time series with Hofstra, although the two teams have not met since the Big Green swept a homeand-home series in and Hofstra has actually not beaten Dartmouth since the season, as the Big Green has won the last four meetings between the schools. The Pride took control of the game with a huge 19-4 run in the second half. After St. John's took its final lead at on a threepointer from Eugene Lawrence with 16:59 left in the game, two jumpers from Agudio sandwiched around a three-pointer from Stokes gave the Pride a advantage. Forward Phil Missere hit two foul shots to temporarily stem the tide, but Hofstra then went on a 12-2 run, capped off by a three-pointer from junior forward Aurimas Kieza (Marijampole, Lithuania) with 11:32 to go, to pull ahead St. John's got the lead back down to seven points with 2:46 to go on a lay-up from forward Lamont Hamilton, and had a chance to cut it to six on apparent breakaway from Lawrence with just under two minutes to go, but Stokes raced in from behind to block the shot and preserve the eight-point lead. St. John's cut the lead to six at on a put-back from Rodney Epperson with 27 seconds left, but Agudio made two foul shots, then fed Stokes for a breakaway lay-up to close out the scoring. Stokes' 24 points were two shy of his career high, which he set last season against Old Dominion. Agudio also scored in double figures for the sixth straight time to start his collegiate career with 19, while adding a personal-best seven assists. Junior forward Adrian Uter added 10 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double with the Pride, which outscored St. John's in the second half after the teams played to a tie at intermission. St. John's was led by Hamilton's 20 points and nine rebounds, while Daryll Hill added 15 points, eight assists and three steals. The sellout was the first for Hofstra since the 2001 America East Conference Championship game, when it defeated Delaware A Rare Visit: Saturday s game against St. John s marked the first time that the Red Storm visited Hofstra in 30 years. The last time that St. John s traveled to Hempstead was in , when it captured a win over the Pride. Prior to Saturday, the previous 10 meetings between the schools have all been St. John s home games. There was, however, a very short road trip that Hofstra took to face St. John s in , when the teams played at Nassau Coliseum, right across the street from Hofstra s campus. In fact, the road trip measured all of 2,124 feet from the door of Hofstra Arena to the door of Nassau Coliseum. The Pride won the World s Shortest Road Trip when it captured an win, marking Hofstra s first-ever win in the series. Hofstra has won three of the last five between the schools, including an win at Alumni Hall last year. 2

Fast Starts: The Pride s current 6-0 record ties the best start that the program has ever had in its 32 years at the NCAA Division I level, matching the standard set by the team. A win over Dartmouth would raise Hofstra s record to 7-0 for the first time since the squad began the year 10-0 in the NCAA Small College Division. The Pride s best start at any level was 12-0 in the season, while playing in the NCAA Small College Division under legendary head coach Butch van Breda Kolff. Here is a list of the previous seasons when the Pride has started at least 6-0: Season Start Record Coach ??? Tom Pecora Dick Berg Butch van Breda Kolff Butch van Breda Kolff Butch van Breda Kolff Frank Reilly Frank Reilly Frank Reilly Pride On Six-Game Win Streak: Hofstra s current sixgame winning streak is the Pride s longest since the team captured 18 wins in a row. That streak included the last 15 regular season games and three CAA Tournament games, giving the Pride the longest streak in the nation heading into the 2001 NCAA s. Still Unbeaten: Hofstra is one of 18 NCAA Division I institutions that are still undefeated through games of Sunday, Dec. 12. Of the 18, the Pride is one of only three that would be classified as mid-major schools, along with Wichita State (5-0) of the Missouri Valley Conference and Oral Roberts (6-0) of the Mid-Continent Conference. Stokes began his college career last season by averaging 4.6 points in his first eight games coming off the bench last winter. Since becoming a starter (on Dec. 23), though, he has raised his game to another level, averaging 16.9 points in the last 27 games. He scored in double figures the last 15 games in a row to end last year, and has extended that streak to 21 in a row with six straight games of 16 or more to start this season. He has been in double figures in 26 of his 27 career starts, with the only exception an eight-point game at Old Dominion last year on Jan. 10. He bounced back, though, to average 24.5 points in the next two meetings with the Monarchs later in the year. Stokes and redshirt freshman guard Antoine Agudio (Huntington Station, NY) helped give the Pride a sweep of the awards, as Agudio was named Rookie of the Week for the third time (see following note). 3

Agudio Named Rookie of the Week (Again): Redshirt freshman guard Antoine Agudio (Huntington Station, NY) has wasted little time in proving to be a potent addition to the Hofstra line-up. Agudio was named the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week for the third time this season on Monday. He was named the first Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week of the new season on Nov. 22 and then captured the award again on Nov. 29. The three CAA Rookie of the Week awards already tie the conference record for the most in an entire season, since the award was first instituted in the campaign. Lawrence Hamm (Towson) and Nick George (VCU) won it three times in , while Corey Cofield (W&M) won it three times last year. Hofstra In Guarded Condition: Hofstra has relied over the last few seasons on a deep frontcourt to lead its conference in rebounding margin in each of the last four seasons (three in the CAA, one in the America East). This year, though, the Pride guards are the ones taking center stage. Hofstra has gone to a three-guard starting line-up of sophomores Loren Stokes (Buffalo, NY) and Carlos Rivera (San German, PR) and redshirt freshman Antoine Agudio (Huntington Station, NY) in each of its first six games. Stokes and Agudio have both been in double figures in all every game, and have combined for at least 34 points in all six contests. In fact, Stokes (19.8 ppg) and Agudio (17.3 ppg) account for nearly half of the Pride s scoring this year (223 of 458 points, see below). Opp. Score Stokes Agudio Total Pct. Florida Int l La Salle Binghamton JMU Longwood St. John s Totals So Happy Together: Sophomore guard Loren Stokes (Buffalo, NY) and redshirt freshman guard Antoine Agudio (Huntington Station, NY) have proven to be an exceptional one-two scoring punch for the Pride in the early going this season (see above note). In fact, the two players have seemed to thrive as teammates, no matter where they ve played. Stokes and Agudio were both members of the Long Island team at the Empire State Games in Binghamton this summer, where they captured the gold medal with a perfect 4-0 record. Agudio (22.8 ppg) and Stokes (21.5 ppg) were the two highest scorers on the team, which won by an average of 33 points per contest. Stokes and Agudio have a perfect 12-0 record when playing together, including 6-0 this season for the Pride, 4-0 at the Empire State Games, and 2-0 in Hofstra exhibition games (one this year, one last year). Top Scoring Freshmen: Through six games, freshman guard Antoine Agudio (Huntington Station, NY) has shown that he has an excellent chance to rank among the top freshman scorers in Pride history. Agudio currently averages 17.3 ppg, which would rank him third all-time among freshmen at Hofstra if it held up for a full season. Rich Laurel was the highest scoring freshman that the Pride has ever had (19.3 ppg in ), while David Taylor is second (17.6 ppg in ) and Craig Speedy Claxton is third (15.0 ppg in ). Here is a look at the top five scoring freshmen that Hofstra has had since freshmen became eligible ( ): Player Year Scoring Rich Laurel David Taylor Criag Speedy Claxton Kenny Adeleke Loren Stokes The Fourth Horseman: There is no question that Hofstra s potent three-guard attack has the potential to cause opponents problems all season. However, junior forward Aurimas Kieza (Marijampole, Lithuania) poses yet another headache to opposing defenses. The 6-8 Kieza is an outstanding perimeter shooter, and essentially gives Hofstra four scorers to spread the floor with on offense. Kieza has played the small forward position in his first two seasons, but is playing the power forward role in the Pride s smaller line-up this winter and is averaging 14.3 points and 7.0 rebounds through six games. Hofstra s four starting perimeter players account for 361 of the team s 458 points (78.9%). Kieza Steps Up: Much like sophomore guard Loren Stokes (Buffalo, NY see previous page), junior forward Aurimas Kieza (Marijampole, Lithuania) has taken his game to another level since becoming a starter. Kieza came off the bench for the first 20 games of the campaign, averaging 3.3 points and 2.4 rebounds per contest. However, injuries began to take their toll, and Kieza was pressed into starting duty for the first time on Feb. 4 against Delaware. From that point on, Kieza started the final nine games, helping the Pride to a 6-3 record by averaging 15.4 points and 7.0 rebounds. So far this season, he is averaging similar numbers (14.3 points, 7.0 rebounds), including 19 points and a careerhigh 15 rebounds in a win over Longwood on Dec. 6. Over the last two years, Hofstra is 12-3 with Kieza in the starting line-up, and 8-12 with him coming off the bench. Aurimas Kieza Stats (since start of season) Points Rebs. 5 Second Half s The Charm: Junior forward Aurimas Kieza (Marijampole, Lithuania) has been a clutch second-half performer for the Pride so far this season, overcoming some slow starts in the process. So far this season, Kieza has scored a whopping 64 of his 86 points in the second half (74.4 percent), including all eight in Saturday s win over St. John s. Kieza also scored 17 of his 19 points in the second half of a Nov. 27 win over Binghamton and 15 of his 17 points in the second half of a win over La Salle on Nov. 24. Florida Int l La Salle Binghamton JMU Longwood St. John s Totals Must Be The Halftime Speeches: Hofstra has been an outstanding second half team this season, putting up much better offensive numbers after intermission than in the first half. The Pride is averaging 44.7 points on a whopping 53.9 percent shooting from the floor after intermission, and only 31.7 points on 39.1 percent shooting in the first half. Hofstra s win over James Madison on Dec. 4 has been the most extreme example, as the Pride scored 27 points in the first half on 26.7 percent shooting against the Dukes, then scored 51 in the second half on 66.7 percent shooting. A complete half-by-half comparison is below: Hofstra Season Stats By Half First Half Second Half Opp. FG-A Pct. Pts. FG-A Pct. Pts. Florida Int l La Salle Binghamton JMU Longwood St. John s Totals A Three-For-All: Hofstra s smaller line-up has given the Pride a variety of scoring options from the perimeter, and the team has shown a propensity for milking hot hands. On six different occasions, a Hofstra player has made at least three three-pointers in a half, including three by redshirt freshman Antoine Agudio (Huntington Station, NY), two by junior forward Aurimas Kieza (Marijampole, Lithuania) and one by sophomore guard Carlos Rivera (San German, PR). In the Binghamton game on Nov. 27, Agudio hit all four of his three-pointers in the first half, then gave way to Kieza, who hit all five of his threepointers in the second half. Souffrant Sixth In Assists: Senior point guard Woody Souffrant (Brooklyn, NY) currently ranks sixth all-time at Hofstra in career assists with 332, including a seasonhigh seven in a Dec. 6 win over Longwood. He needs 23 more to move into a tie for fifth place with Rich Laurel ( ). He became the 11 th player in school history to record 100 three-pointers when he knocked down a shot from beyond the arc in the first half of a season-opening win over Florida International. He currently has 102 threepointers and needs four more to reach the top 10 on the school s all-time list, tying Anthony Davis, who played from Norman Richardson ( ) holds the all-time record with 192 (see chart below). This year, he has spent most of his playing time at power forward, as Hofstra has adjusted to some smaller line-ups without projected starting center Wendell Gibson (Far Rockaway, NY). 5

Gibson Injury Derails Strong Season: Senior center Wendell Gibson (Far Rockaway, NY) was on his way to an All-CAA caliber season in before he was lost for the year with a knee injury, an injury which has kept him out for the first six games of this season as well. Gibson was hurt with 31 seconds left in a home loss to Drexel on Jan. 28 after matching his career high with 26 points before the injury. He had really stepped up his play during the season, leading the Pride in scoring (14.3 ppg) and field goal percentage (60.7 percent). His production across the board also visibly improved from his first two seasons, particularly in field goal percentage (see following chart). Wendell Gibson's Career Statistics Year PPG RPG FG% FT% Gibson From The Field: Senior center Wendell Gibson (Far Rockaway, NY) not only put up impressive scoring numbers last year prior to his injury, but he also did so in extremely efficient fashion. Gibson shot 60 percent or better from the floor in 12 of his 19 games, including nine games of 70 percent or better. Gibson ranked third in the CAA and 12 th in the nation in field goal percentage (.607) at the time of his injury. Gibson On The Boards: Senior center Wendell Gibson (Far Rockaway, NY) averaged 6.2 rebounds per game before his season-ending injury a year ago, but his impact went far beyond his individual numbers. At the time of his injury, Hofstra ranked fifth in the country in rebounding margin (+8.2 per game). His absence in the Pride frontcourt has clearly had a detrimental effect. In the 16 games since his injury (10 last year, six this year), Hofstra has a rebounding edge of only 0.4 boards per contest. M*A*S*H* Unit: One of the first objectives for the Hofstra Men s Basketball team this season is to simply get everyone close to healthy again. A year ago, the Pride lost starters Carlos Rivera (San German, PR) and Wendell Gibson (Far Rockaway, NY) to season-ending knee injuries within one week of each other. Rivera returned to the opening-day line-up on Sunday, Nov. 21 against Florida International, after sitting out the Pride s exhibition game, and scored 13 points. However, Gibson has remained on the sidelines and is still day-to-day to return to the Pride. A healthy season would be a pleasant change of pace for the coaching staff. Last year, Hofstra players missed 78 games as a result of illness or injuries, while in , members of the Pride combined to miss 103 games. Offense Keeps Improving: Over the last few seasons, Hofstra s record has gotten better and better, due in large part to its improved offensive production. Hofstra is averaging 76.3 points per game through the first six contests, while shooting 46.1 percent from the floor and 38.5 percent on threes. Two years ago, the Pride finished 8-21 after averaging only 64.1 points on 40.7 shooting from the floor and 32.2 shooting from threepoint territory. Here is a look at Hofstra s offensive improvement in the four seasons under Tom Pecora: Year PPG FG% 3FG% 3PG W-L Pride Ranked #13 In Mid-Major Poll: Thanks to its quick 6-0 start, Hofstra has returned to the College Insider Mid-Major coaches poll for the first time since the early part of the season. Hofstra debuted in the poll at #21 on Nov. 28, and moved up to #13 in the latest poll released on Monday. Hofstra was ranked #1 in the College Insider poll at the end of the regular season, when it finished Home, Sweet Home: Hofstra s win over St. John s on Saturday was its sixth in a row at Hofstra Arena, improving the Pride to all-time since the building opened on January 2, The Pride is also in its last 74 home games, dating back to the season in the old Physical Fitness Center. Included in that stretch was a 26-game homecourt win streak that included the final 16 games in the Physical Fitness Center and the first 10 at Hofstra Arena. Road, Sweet Road: Hofstra s current six-game winning streak has included four wins on the road. Dating back to last season, the Pride has won six of its last seven road games. Quick Starters: Sophomore guard Carlos Rivera (San German, PR) started his first 21 collegiate games before being injured in a Feb. 4 win over Delaware last season. To find the last freshman to begin his career as a regular starter, you have to go back to current Golden State Warrior Speedy Claxton in Rivera scored a personal-best 23 points on Monday, Jan. 5 against VCU, shooting 6-of-9 from three-point territory, setting a Hofstra freshman record for three-pointers in a game. Rivera finished the season averaging 10.8 points per game before his injury. Redshirt freshman Antoine Agudio (Huntington Station, NY) also began his Pride career as a starter when he took the floor at the beginning of its season-opening win over Florida International on Nov

The Sixth Borough?: Sophomore guard Carlos Rivera (San German, PR) and freshman guard Jorge Lebron (San German, PR) have continued a recent Hofstra lineage of Puerto Rican guards. In , shooting guard Rick Apodaca, who represented Puerto Rico in the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, concluded a career which saw him finish ninth at Hofstra in scoring (1,422 points). In , Hofstra started an All-Puerto Rican backcourt of Apodaca and Jason Hernandez, who also scored over 1,000 career points (at both New Hampshire and Hofstra), on its way to a 26-5 final record. Rivera and Lebron, meanwhile, grew up in the same neighborhood of San German and have known each other since they were in grade school. Chairmen Of The Boards: The Pride has developed a reputation as an exceptionally strong rebounding team in recent years. Hofstra has led the CAA in rebounding margin in each of its first three seasons in the league (+4.0 in , +6.1 in , +5.5 in ), after also leading the America East Conference the previous year. Hofstra has only been outrebounded seven times in each of the last two seasons, while winning the battle of the boards a combined 42 times in those two years. Since the start of the Tom Pecora era in , Hofstra has been outrebounded only 24 times in 96 games (25.0 percent of the time), and only 23.6 percent of the time since This year may break that trend, as the Pride is utilizing a smaller, threeguard line-up. Hofstra was outrebounded in its first two games, but has held the edge in the four games since. Hofstra s Battle Of the Boards ( ) Year Games HU Opp. Even Totals The Newest Board Member: If Hofstra is going to continue its recent dominance in the rebounding department, it will need to rely heavily on junior college transfer Adrian Uter (Queens, NY). Uter led the entire nation in rebounding last year at Broward Community College in Florida, averaging 15.7 boards to go along with his 18.2 points per contest. He had been plagued by foul trouble in the early part of this season, before breaking through with a 14-rebound performance in Hofstra s win over James Madison on Dec. 4 and adding a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double against St. John s on Saturday. He is now averaging a team-high 7.2 rebounds a game through his first six contests this winter. 8 Odds And Ends: Some strange, unusual, and sometimes relevant facts regarding Hofstra basketball: Defense Tells The Story: Hofstra has won 37 straight games when holding opponents to less than 60 points, dating back to a loss to Rutgers at the Postseason NIT in The Pride extended that streak with its win over Longwood on Dec. 6. Then Again, So Does Offense: The Pride is 25-1 the last 26 times it has scored 80 or more points, and is also 27-1 the last 28 times it has or shot 50 percent from the field or better (including Saturday vs. St. John s). The Pride lost to Drexel last season on Jan. 28, the first time it had scored 80 and lost since an defeat to Delaware on Jan. 9, Closing Time: It has proven to be very difficult for opponents to come from behind late against the Pride in recent years.
