Scouting William & Mary: The Tribe comes into Wednesday s game with a 4-6 record on the season after falling on Sunday to fifth-ranked North Carolina. William & Mary has wins this season over Hartford, Radford, Longwood, and Hampton, while it has fallen to Campbell, Virginia Tech, Old Dominion, UNC Greensboro, Kentucky and North Carolina. Junior forward Hawley Smith leads the Tribe with 11.5 points per game. Sophomore forward Corey Cofield, the CAA Rookie of the Year, is chipping in with 10.9 points and a team-high 6.3 rebounds per game. The Tribe has shot the ball well this season (44.0 pct.), but has struggled with turnovers (19.8 pg) Hofstra vs. William & Mary Series: Hofstra holds a 4-2 lead in the series, which began in when the Pride moved to the CAA. The Pride has won the last three meetings, including a two-game sweep last year and a win in the opening round of the 2003 CAA Tournament. William & Mary took its only lead of the second half at with 11:29 left on a driving lay-up by guard Nick D'Antoni. Hofstra, though, answered right back with a 10-0 run to go ahead After a Taylor Mokris three-pointer cut the lead to 56-50, Radziejewski hit the Pride's next five shots from the floor, including three from beyond the arc, to stave off the Tribe's comeback hopes. Radziejewski began his personal run with a jumper at the 8:04 mark to give the Pride a lead. After a pair of foul shots by Mokris, Radziejewski answered with a three-pointer to stretch the Hofstra lead back up to William & Mary scored the next four points to pull within at the 6:24 mark, but Radziejewski answered with another shot from beyond the arc to push the margin back up to eight. After D'Antoni hit a pair of foul shots, Radziejewski answered with a put-back off an offensive rebound at the 5:25 mark to make the score Four Tribe points around a Stokes foul shot made the score 67-62, but Radziejewski struck back with his fourth trey of the night to make the score William & Mary got as close as five points with the ball with 34 seconds left, but a Stokes steal helped Hofstra seal the win. Stokes scored 16 of his 25 points in the first half and came one point shy of his career-best, which he set in a win over Old Dominion on Saturday, Feb. 7. He shot 8-13 from the floor, and 2-of-3 from three-point territory. It was his 15th time in double figures in his 16 starts (since Dec. 23). Junior forward Kenny Adeleke added a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Senior forward Adam Hess led the way for William & Mary with 26 points, while freshman forward Corey Cofield added a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds. At Hofstra (Hofstra 98, W&M 71): Junior forwards Wendell Gibson and Kenny Adeleke each had 20 points, and freshman guards Loren Stokes and Carlos Rivera each added 16, as Hofstra recorded its highest point total since with a win over William & Mary on Jan 24 at Hofstra Arena. The last time the Pride scored more than 98 points was when it had 103 against UMBC in the campaign. Gibson shot from the floor, matching his career high in field goals made, while Adeleke fell one rebound short of a double-double with 20 points and nine rebounds. Stokes added a career-high nine assists to go along with his 16 points, while Rivera added six rebounds, five assists and five steals to his 16-point output. Junior forward Michael Radziejewski saw his longest action in a month, and chipped in with six points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Hofstra led by as many as 21 in the first half before settling for a lead at the break. William & Mary started the second half with a 12-4 run to get the lead back down to 11 at on a Zeb Cope lay-up. However, Hofstra answered the challenge with a 10-2 run of its own. Senior forward Danny Walker capped off the rally with a lay-up at the 14:13 mark to make the score and the Pride was able to cruise from there for the easy victory. Freshman forward Corey Cofield had a strong game for William & Mary in a losing effort, tallying 24 points on 10-of-13 shooting from the floor. Senior forward Adam Hess added 17 points, while Cope chipped in with 12 points for the Tribe. 2

Last Game (Syracuse 80, Hofstra 75): Senior All- American Hakim Warrick had 29 points as seventhranked Syracuse rallied from behind and held off Hofstra down the stretch for an win on Thursday. Warrick scored Syracuse s final six points over the last 1:30, while falling one point short of his career high. The Pride had the better of play against Syracuse for the first 30 minutes. Hofstra led 9-2 early, and Syracuse managed only a pair of one-point leads in the first half before pulling even (38-38) at intermission. Gerry McNamara opened the second half with a three-pointer for the Orange, but Hofstra answered with an 8-2 run to pull back in front. A lay-up from sophomore guard Loren Stokes gave the Pride a lead with 12:01 to play, but Syracuse responded with the next seven points to pull ahead Stokes answered with a three-pointer to give Hofstra its final lead at 62-61, before Syracuse went on a 13-4 run to take its largest lead at on a McNamara three-pointer with 5:28 to go. Hofstra answered right back with an 8-0 run, capped off by a three-pointer from senior forward Michael Radziejewski (Jackson Heights, NY) with 1:40 to play to pull within Warrick, though, answered with a three-point play, and after junior forward Adrian Uter (Queens, NY) had a tip-in to pull Hofstra within 75-73, Warrick converted on a dunk with 14 seconds left to seal the win. The Pride shot over 50 percent from the floor (27-53), tallied a seasonhigh 18 assists against only 11 turnovers, and battled a much bigger Syracuse team even on the boards (32-32). The undersized Pride did not have an answer down low for Warrick (29 points) and sophomore forward Terrence Roberts (20 points, 8-of-8 shooting). However, the Pride s three-guard attack had the better of the perimeter play, as freshman Antoine Agudio (Huntington Station, NY), sophomore Carlos Rivera (San German, PR) and Stokes had 17, 16, and 15 points, respectively. Fast Starts: The Pride s 9-0 start marked the best start that the program has ever had in its 32 years at the NCAA Division I level, eclipsing the 6-0 standard set by the team. It was the best start for the Pride at any level since the squad began the year 10-0 while playing in the NCAA Small College Division under legendary head coach Butch van Breda Kolff. The Pride started a school-record 12-0 in the season, which was van Breda Kolff s first season at the helm. Here is a list of the previous seasons when the Pride has won at least eight games in a row to start the year: Season Start Record Coach ??? Tom Pecora Butch van Breda Kolff Butch van Breda Kolff Butch van Breda Kolff Frank Reilly Frank Reilly Oh So Close: Hofstra s loss to #7 Syracuse on Thursday was the best performance that the Pride has ever had against a nationally-ranked team, bettering the defeat it suffered to #22 Gonzaga in The previous season, the Pride picked up an early-season win over Kent State, which was ranked #15 in the Sports Illustrated preseason poll, but which was in the also receiving votes category of the AP and USA Today polls. Kent State went on to reach the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament that season. One Of The Last To Lose: Hofstra made it all the way to December 30 before suffering its first loss of the season against seventh-ranked Syracuse. At the time of the loss, Hofstra was one of only 10 unbeaten teams left in the country out of 330 schools. The last 10 standing were Pittsburgh, Boston College and West Virginia from the Big East, Kansas and Texas A&M from the Big 12, along with Illinois, Duke, Cincinnati, Hofstra and Wichita State. Winning Streaks: Hofstra s nine-game win streak to start the season tied for the school s thirdlongest streak in its Division I history (since ). The team had an 18-game streak that included the last 15 regular season games and three America East Tournament games. The team had a 10-game win streak, while the squad also won nine in a row. The Pride had a school-record 23-game streak in the NCAA Small College Division, overlapping the last 13 games of and the first 10 of Offense Keeps Improving: Over the last few seasons, Hofstra s record has gotten better and better, due in large part to its improved offensive production. Hofstra is averaging a CAA-best 73.7 points per game through the first 10 contests, while shooting 48.3 percent from the floor and 37.9 percent on threes, all of which are the highest totals in the four seasons under Tom Pecora: Hofstra Offensive Statistics Year PPG FG% 3FG% 3PG W-L The Defense Never Rests: In addition to the Pride s offensive improvement (see above), the team has significantly turned up the defensive intensity in recent weeks. After allowing 75 points in a win over James Madison on Dec. 4, Hofstra held four of its next five opponents to less than 60 points before falling to Syracuse on Thursday. That is an important plateau for the Pride, which has won the last 40 games in which it has held its opponents to less than 60 points. 3

Stoke-ing The Fire: Sophomore guard Loren Stokes (Buffalo, NY) scored in double figures (15 points) for the 25th game in a row in the Pride s loss to seventhranked Syracuse on Thursday. Stokes began his college career coming off the bench for the first eight games last year, averaging 4.6 points. Ever since he became a starter for the first time against St. Peter s on Dec. 23, 2003, he has taken his game to another level. He has scored in double figures in 30 of his 31 career starts, with the only exception an eight-point game at Old Dominion last year on Jan. 10. Loren Stokes As A Starter: Opponent (Date) Pts. Rebs. Stokes leads the conference in scoring (19.4 ppg), while ranking eighth in rebounding (6.3), seventh in assists (3.2) and sixth in steals (1.9). He also ranks fifth in field goal percentage (53.1 pct.) despite playing the guard position. Mr. Consistency: One of the more impressive things about sophomore guard Loren Stokes (Buffalo, NY) in the early part of the season has been his consistency. Stokes leads the Pride with 19.4 points per game, but that average hasn t been weighed up by one or two spectacular performances. Rather, Stokes has steadily scored between points in all 10 contests. His season-high of 24 points was scored against St. John s on Dec. 11. Hofstra In Guarded Condition: Hofstra has relied on a deep frontcourt to lead its conference in rebounding margin in each of the last four seasons (three in the CAA, one in the America East). This year, though, the Pride guards have been the ones leading the way. Hofstra has gone to a three-guard starting line-up this season, led by sophomore Loren Stokes (Buffalo, NY) and redshirt freshman Antoine Agudio (Huntington Station, NY). Stokes (19.4 ppg) and Agudio (15.0 ppg) account for nearly half of the Pride s points this year (312 of 662, 47.1 pct) and have scored at least 40 percent of Hofstra s points in all 10 games (see chart below). Florida Int l La Salle Binghamton JMU Longwood St. John s Dartmouth Columbia Stony Brook Syracuse Totals So Happy Together: Sophomore guard Loren Stokes (Buffalo, NY) and redshirt freshman guard Antoine Agudio (Huntington Station, NY) have proven to be an exceptional one-two scoring punch for the Pride in the early going this season (see above note). In fact, the two players have seemed to thrive as teammates, no matter where they ve played. Stokes and Agudio were both members of the Long Island team at the Empire State Games in Binghamton this summer, where they captured the gold medal with a perfect 4-0 record. Agudio (22.8 ppg) and Stokes (21.5 ppg) were the two highest scorers on the team, which won by an average of 33 points per contest. Stokes and Agudio have a 15-1 record when playing together, including 9-1 this season for the Pride, 4-0 at the Empire State Games, and 2-0 in Hofstra exhibition games (one this year, one last year). They were a perfect 15-0 before the Pride suffered its first loss of the season at seventh-ranked Syracuse on Thursday. 4

Agudio Named Rookie of the Week (Again): Redshirt freshman guard Antoine Agudio (Huntington Station, NY) has wasted little time in proving to be a potent addition to the Hofstra line-up. Agudio was named the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week for the fourth time in a span of five weeks on Monday, Dec. 20. He was named the first Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week on Nov. 22 and then captured the award again on Nov. 29. The four CAA Rookie of the Week awards already break the conference record for an entire season, since the award was first instituted in the campaign. Top Scoring Freshmen: Through the first 10 games, freshman guard Antoine Agudio (Huntington Station, NY) has shown that he has an excellent chance to rank among the top freshman scorers in Pride history. Agudio currently averages 15.0 points per game, which would rank him tied for third all-time among freshmen at Hofstra if it held up for a full season. Rich Laurel was the highest scoring freshman that the Pride has ever had (19.3 ppg in ), while David Taylor is second (17.6 ppg in ) and Craig Speedy Claxton is third (15.0 ppg in ). Here is a look at the top five scoring freshmen in Hofstra history: Top Scoring Hofstra Freshmen Player Year PPG Rich Laurel David Taylor Criag Speedy Claxton Kenny Adeleke Loren Stokes Kieza Steps Up: Much like sophomore guard Loren Stokes (Buffalo, NY see previous page), junior forward Aurimas Kieza (Marijampole, Lithuania) has taken his game to another level since becoming a starter. Kieza came off the bench for the first 20 games of the campaign, averaging 3.3 points and 2.4 rebounds per contest. However, injuries began to take their toll, and Kieza was pressed into starting duty for the first time on Feb. 4 against Delaware. From that point on, Kieza started the final nine games, helping the Pride to a 6-3 record by averaging 15.4 points and 7.0 rebounds. So far this season, he is averaging 11.9 points and 6.2 rebounds), including 19 points and a career-high 15 rebounds in a win over Longwood on Dec. 6. Over the last two years, Hofstra is 15-4 with Kieza in the starting line-up, and 8-12 with him coming off the bench. Aurimas Kieza Stats (since start of season) Points Rebs. PPG RPG As a starter (19 games) As a reserve (20 games) Totals (39 games) The Fourth Horseman: There is no question that Hofstra s potent three-guard attack has the potential to cause opponents problems all season. However, junior forward Aurimas Kieza (Marijampole, Lithuania) poses yet another headache to opposing defenses. The 6-8 Kieza is an outstanding perimeter shooter, and essentially gives Hofstra four scorers to spread the floor with on offense. Kieza has played the small forward position in his first two seasons, but is playing the power forward role in the Pride s smaller line-up this winter and is averaging 11.9 points and 6.2 rebounds through 10 games. Instant Offense: Senior forward Michael Radziejewski (Jackson Heights, NY) has stepped up for the Pride in a big way in recent weeks, providing Hofstra with an offensive spark off the bench. Radziejewski has shot 24- for-37 (64.9 percent) from the floor in the last six games, including 50 percent or better in all six of them. He made four of his five shots in Thursday s loss to Syracuse and also shot 4-for-5 in a Dec. 22 win over Columbia and 5- for-6 in a Dec. 17 win over Dartmouth. Radziejewski Reaches 100 Threes: Senior forward Michael Radziejewski (Jackson Heights, NY) became the 11 th player in school history to record 100 threepointers when he knocked down a shot from beyond the arc in the first half of a season-opening win over Florida International. He currently has 106 three-pointers, moving him into a tie for 10 th place on Hofstra s all-time career list with Anthony Davis, who played from Norman Richardson ( ) holds the all-time record with 192 (see chart below). This year, he has spent most of his playing time at the power forward spot, as Hofstra has adjusted to some smaller line-ups without projected starting center Wendell Gibson (Far Rockaway, NY). 5

Souffrant Sixth In Assists: Senior point guard Woody Souffrant (Brooklyn, NY) currently ranks sixth all-time at Hofstra in career assists with 336, including a seasonhigh seven in a Dec. 6 win over Longwood. He needs 20 more to move into a tie for fifth place with Rich Laurel ( ). Pecora was an assistant for seven seasons ( ) under former head coach Jay Wright, then took over the head coaching position in His record through 100 games is two games better than the mark Jay Wright had at the same point in his head coaching career (41-59). Pride Ranked #7 In Mid-Major Poll: Thanks to its quick 9-0 start, Hofstra has returned to the College Insider Mid-Major coaches poll for the first time since the early part of the season. Hofstra debuted in the poll at #21 on Nov. 28, and moved up to #7 in the latest poll released on Monday, Dec. 27. Hofstra was ranked #1 in the College Insider poll at the end of the regular season, when it finished A Rare Visit: The Pride s home game against St. John s on Dec. 11, which the Pride won in front of a sellout crowd of 5,124, marked the first time that the Red Storm visited Hofstra in 30 years. The last time that St. John s traveled to Hempstead was in , when it captured a win over the Pride. Prior to Hofstra s win on Dec. 11 in front of a sellout crowd, the previous 10 meetings between the schools were all St. John s home games. There was, however, a very short road trip that Hofstra took to face St. John s in , when the teams played at Nassau Coliseum, right across the street from Hofstra s campus. In fact, the road trip measured all of 2,124 feet from the door of Hofstra Arena to the door of Nassau Coliseum. The Pride won the World s Shortest Road Trip when it captured an win, marking Hofstra s first-ever win in the series. Chairmen Of The Boards: The Pride has developed a reputation as an exceptionally strong rebounding team in recent years. Hofstra has led the CAA in rebounding margin in each of its first three seasons in the league (+4.0 in , +6.1 in , +5.5 in ), after also leading the America East Conference the previous year. Hofstra has only been outrebounded seven times in each of the last two seasons, while winning the battle of the boards a combined 42 times in those two years. Since the start of the Tom Pecora era in , Hofstra has been outrebounded only 26 times in 100 games (26.0 percent of the time), and only 24.4 percent of the time since This year may break that trend, as the Pride is utilizing a smaller, threeguard line-up and has been outrebounded four times. Hofstra s Battle Of the Boards ( ) Year Games HU Opp. Even Totals The Newest Board Member: If Hofstra is going to continue its recent dominance in the rebounding department, it will need to rely heavily on junior college transfer Adrian Uter (Queens, NY). Uter led the entire nation in rebounding last year at Broward Community College in Florida, averaging 15.7 boards to go along with his 18.2 points per contest. He had been plagued by foul trouble in the early part of this season, before breaking through with a 14-rebound performance in Hofstra s win over James Madison on Dec. 4. He added a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double against St. John s on Dec. 11 and is now averaging 6.2 rebounds a game through his first 10 contests. Home, Sweet Home: Hofstra s win over Columbia on Dec. 22 was its seventh in a row at Hofstra Arena, improving the Pride to all-time since the building opened on January 2, The Pride is also in its last 75 home games, dating back to the season in the old Physical Fitness Center. Included in that stretch was a 26-game homecourt win streak that included the final 16 games in the Physical Fitness Center and the first 10 at Hofstra Arena. Road, Sweet Road: Hofstra s nine-game winning streak to start the season included an impressive six wins on the road. Dating back to last season, the Pride has won eight of its last 10 road games. The last time Hofstra went to the NCAA Tournament ( ), it led the nation in road wins with 12. 6

Gibson Injury Derails Strong Season: Senior center Wendell Gibson (Far Rockaway, NY) was on his way to an All-CAA caliber season in before he was lost for the year with a knee injury, an injury which has kept him out for the first 10 games of this season as well. Gibson was hurt with 31 seconds left in a home loss to Drexel on Jan. 28 after matching his career high with 26 points before the injury. He had really stepped up his play during the season, leading the Pride in scoring (14.3 ppg) and field goal percentage (60.7 percent). His production across the board also visibly improved from his first two seasons, particularly in field goal percentage (see following chart). Wendell Gibson's Career Statistics Year PPG RPG FG% FT% Gibson From The Field: Senior center Wendell Gibson (Far Rockaway, NY) not only put up impressive scoring numbers last year prior to his injury, but he also did so in extremely efficient fashion. Gibson shot 60 percent or better from the floor in 12 of his 19 games, including nine games of 70 percent or better. Gibson ranked third in the CAA and 12 th in the nation in field goal percentage (.607) at the time of his injury. Gibson On The Boards: Senior center Wendell Gibson (Far Rockaway, NY) averaged 6.2 rebounds per game before his season-ending injury a year ago, but his impact went far beyond his individual numbers. At the time of his injury, Hofstra ranked fifth in the country in rebounding margin (+8.2 per game). His absence in the Pride frontcourt has clearly had a detrimental effect. In the 20 games since his injury (10 last year, 10 this year), Hofstra has a rebounding edge of only 0.3 boards per contest. M*A*S*H* Unit: One of the first objectives for the Hofstra Men s Basketball team coming into this season was to simply get everyone close to healthy again. A year ago, the Pride lost starters Carlos Rivera (San German, PR) and Wendell Gibson (Far Rockaway, NY) to season-ending knee injuries within one week of each other. Rivera returned to the opening-day line-up on Sunday, Nov. 21 against Florida International (after sitting out the Pride s exhibition game), and has played in nine of 10 contests this season. However, Gibson has remained on the sidelines and is still day-to-day to return to the Pride. A healthy season would be a pleasant change of pace for the coaching staff. Last year, Hofstra players missed 78 games as a result of illness or injuries, while in , members of the Pride combined to miss 103 games. Defense Comes Up Big: Hofstra put forth its best defensive effort since in a win over Columbia on Wednesday, Dec. 22. The Pride held Columbia to just 19.3 percent shooting for the game (11-57), including less than 20 percent in both halves. The 40 points were the fewest the Pride has allowed since a win over Rider in and set a new Hofstra Arena record for fewest points allowed in a game: Fewest Points Allowed Hofstra Arena Score Opponent Year Columbia Manhattan Northeastern Boston Univ Towson Block Party: Hofstra fell just one shy of the school record for blocked shots in a game when it rejected 13 Columbia attempts in its win on Wednesday, Dec. 22. Junior forwards Aurimas Kieza (Marijampole, Lithuania) and Adrian Uter (Queens, NY) both set career highs in blocks with six and five, respectively. The school record of 14 was set against New Mexico State in the 1999 Preseason NIT, led by a school-record 10 from former center Greg Springfield. Quick Starters: Sophomore guard Carlos Rivera (San German, PR) started his first 21 collegiate games before being injured in a Feb. 4 win over Delaware last season. To find the last freshman to begin his career as a regular starter, you have to go back to current Golden State Warrior Speedy Claxton in Rivera finished the season averaging 10.8 points per game before his injury. This season, redshirt freshman Antoine Agudio (Huntington Station, NY) has started his first 10 collegiate games for the Pride. The Sixth Borough?: Sophomore guard Carlos Rivera (San German, PR) and freshman guard Jorge Lebron (San German, PR) have continued a recent Hofstra lineage of Puerto Rican guards. In , shooting guard Rick Apodaca, who represented Puerto Rico in the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, concluded a career which saw him finish ninth at Hofstra in scoring (1,422 points). In , Hofstra started an All-Puerto Rican backcourt of Apodaca and Jason Hernandez, who also scored over 1,000 career points (at both New Hampshire and Hofstra), on its way to a 26-5 final record. Rivera and Lebron, meanwhile, grew up in the same neighborhood of San German and have known each other since they were in grade school. Next Up: The Pride returns to action when it plays an important CAA home game on Saturday, Jan. 8 against Drexel, a team which Hofstra has not defeated in the last three seasons as members of the CAA. 7
