3 LAST TIME OUT: GAME 22 - MOUNT ST. MARY'S MOUNTAINEERS MOUNT ST. MARY'S 81, MONMOUTH 54 - West Long Branch, N.J. The Monmouth University women s basketball team had its five-game win streak snapped at the hands of visiting Mount St. Mary s, 81-54, on Monday night, in Boylan Gym. Led by Adrienne Harris game-high 29 points, the Mount improved its overall record to 8-15, and evened its Northeast Conference ledger at 7-7, while the Hawks, who entered tonight s contest in second place in the league standing, fell to 13-9 overall and 9-4 in the NEC. The Mountaineers guards took over the game from the outset, as the duo of Harris and Samira Rashid, combined for 45 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists in the game. Monmouth grabbed an early 3-0 lead at the 18:41 mark, as junior forward COURTNEY LUMPKIN connected on a traditional three-point play, before the Mount battled back for a one-point edge of their own, 4-3, behind baskets from Beth Foster and Rashid, at 16:59. The Hawks regained the lead once again at 5-4, just 30 seconds later, as LASHEENA MARTIN drained a jumpshot, which would be Monmouth s last lead of the contest. The Mount used a 16-5 run over the next 6:52 to build a 10-point cushion over Monmouth, as Harris completed a four-point play, while Foster and Myriam Baccouche connected from behind the arc as well. The Hawks cut the lead back down to eight, 20-12, as Lumpkin hit from the field, but the Mount raced out to a 20-point bulge at the intermission, guided by 13 points from Harris, who went 10-for-18 from the field for the game. MU opened the second half on an 8-2 surge, holding Mount to just a single Harris field goal in the first three minutes of action. In the mini-run, NIAMH DWYER connected on two 3-pointers, while JEWONDA BRIGHT deposited a lay up, which was her 1001 st point for her MU career. After Rashid hit for a trifecta, to give Mount a edge with 15:51 left, the Hawks scored the next seven points to cut the lead to 11, 51-40, with 14:06 showing. Lumpkin, using penetration, tallied two scores, while Dwyer hit from beyond the arc once again, but it was the closest Monmouth got to the Mountaineers. Mount St. Mary s outscored Monmouth to close out the game, including an impressive 16-for-18 showing from the free throw line in the final 14 minutes of the contest. Monmouth, who leads the Northeast Conference in field goal percentage defense, allowed the Mount to hit on 41.0% (25-61) for the game, while the Hawks connected on 35.3% (18-51) from the floor. The Mount maintained the sizable advantage throughout the game by hitting 24-of-29 free throw attempts, which translates to an 82.8% success rate, while the Hawks hit for a season low 50.0% (12-24) from the charity stripe. Monmouth had three players post double-figures in the scoring column, led by Lumpkin s 16 points, on 6-of-11 shooting from the floor, and seven rebounds. Bright tallied her fourth double-double of the season with 11 points and a gamehigh 13 rebounds, while Dwyer hit for 15 points behind four 3-pointers. Bright became the 10 th player in MU history in the 1,000/500 club, but the first to become a member in just three seasons, as the center now has 1,003 points and 511 rebounds in the Blue and White, while she now stands 12 th all-time on the rebounds chart. Mount St. Mary s, who avenged its triple overtime loss to the Hawks in Knott Arena on January 31, also had a trio post double-digits in the scoring column. Harris, who entered the game averaging 14.5 points per game, tallied a gamehigh 29 points, while Rashid and Baccouche carded 16 points each. Rashid added a game-high nine assists to her ledger, while Baccouche corralled a team-high seven rebounds as well. All-NEC performer Foster, posted nine points and five boards, while Caitlin Pearson chipped in off the bench with a career-high eight points. GETTIN' THERE MU s longest win streak in its Division I history is 10 games, which was done twice, once during the season, and once again during The Hawks put together two, four-game win streaks last season, en route to their second consecutive post season appearance. The Birds' five-game win streak this season was the longest since MU's seven-game streak in HAWKS CATCH THE INJURY BUG Without a full compliment of players throughout last season, the Hawks claimed the number three seed in the Northeast Conference Tournament and made an appearance in the semifinals for the first time since COURTNEY LUMPKIN (torn ACL), ERIN WINSTON (stress fracture in shin), LASHAUNDA MERRIWEATHER (stress fracture in foot) and CHRISTINE ARSEGO (ankle) all missed time due to injuries. Although "healthy" to start this season, NEC All-Rookie performer LIZ WHALEN missed the the first seven games of this season after surgery for compartment syndrome. "JAY BIRD SHOWING BRIGHT COLORS Co-captain JEWONDA BRIGHT returned as the Hawks' top scorer and rebounder from last year. The center, who led MU in field goal percentage the last two seasons (ranking 19th in the country as a sophomore), averaged 13.7 points and 5.6 rebounds per game as a junior. She now ranks 12th all-time on the Monmouth scoring chart with 1,003 points. WELCOME TO THE BOYLER ROOM The Monmouth women s basketball team has posted a mark in Boylan Gym in the three-plus seasons under coach JACKIE DEVANE, including an 11-2 campaign during the season. The Hawks went 6-7 in Boylan last season, which included a stretch of four consecutive home league losses for the first time since MU is 5-3 in the friendly confines this season. ROAD WARRIORS... Last season, Monmouth went a combined 13-4 away from Boylan Gym, with losses at UCF, Seton Hall, St. Francis (Pa.) and versus UMBC in the NEC Tournament. The Hawks had posted eight straight road wins, breaking the school record for consecutive road victories (six) set from January 3, 1987 to February 2, 1987, and tying a school-mark for consecutive NEC road wins, set during the season. MU is 8-6 away from Boylan this year, which includes a six-game road win streak, and finished its longest road stretch since of six games, going 1-5. REJECTION CAN BE A GOOD THING MU holds the NEC record for blocks in a single game (15), a record that was set against FDU on January 9, Last season, MU ranked second in the league in blocked shots (3.14), with a second-best 91 swats. Monmouth ranks third in the NEC in 2003, averaging 3.3 blocks per game. JEWONDA BRIGHT leads the block-brigade with 20 facials.

5 THAT S WHY THEY CALL IT CHARITY... As a team, MU is connecting on 66.3% ( ) from the free throw line this year, which ranks eighth in the NEC. Foul shooting argueably saved MU in its triple overtime thriller at the Mount (1/31), as the Hawks went 23-of-32 from the stripe. ERIN WINSTON, who was 11-for-12 in the game, went 7-for-8 in the overtime sessions, as MU won In the rematch with the Mount, MU hit a season-low 50.0% (12-24) in the 27 point loss. Last season, the Hawks made (412) and attempted (594) more free throws than any other team in the NEC during the season. CLOSE CALLS... The Blue and White was 5-4 in games decided by five points or less during the season. In its one-point win at Sacred Heart (1/16), MU broke a four-game losing streak in one-point games. The last one-point win for the Hawks came on 1/25/01 when LaToya Thompson s buzzer-beater topped St. Francis [Pa.], while it also broke the 10th longest home win streak in the NCAA for the Pioneers at the time. This season, MU erased a 17-point second half deficit to defeat Quinnipiac on the road, and posted a triple ot, four-point win at Mount St. Mary's, making its record in five point games, 2-0 in TEAM DEFENSE In , the Hawks led the NEC and ranked 15th nationally in field goal percentage defense, allowing just a 36.0% success rate for their opponents. The Blue and White also ranked fourth in the NEC in scoring defense, giving up 57.8 points per game, which also ranked 25th in the NCAA. Currently, the Hawks are holding thier opponents to a combined 37.0% from the floor this season, including a 20.8% showing from Akron (11/30), which was the lowest percentage since MU held Robert Morris to a paultry 19.4% from the floor (3/1/03). The Hawks rank first in the NEC in field goal percentage defense with the.370 figure. MY WALLET S TOO SMALL TO HOLD MY 50 S, AND MY DIAMOND SHOES ARE TOO TIGHT... MU held its opponents to 59 or less points on 19 occasions last year, including nine of its last 11 opponents, winning 16 of the 19 contests overall. The Hawks won four straight games while accomplishing the feat. The Birds held Robert Morris to a season-low 34 points this season, the lowest output since 1/26/89 (St. Francis N.Y points). The Hawks opened the season holding Norfolk State to 51 points and held Akron (11/30) to a season-low 40 points. MU is 9-2 in when holding its opponents to under the 60 point mark, as it held Robert Morris to 57 points in overtime last Monday. PARTYING LIKE IT S Since January of the season, the Hawks had not held consecutive opponents under 50 points, when the Hawks beat Queens (65-46) and then defeated Loyola [Md.], The Blue and White accomplished the same feat twice in and did it again on three occasions in MU held a total of seven teams under the 50-point total last year, including in the final three games. The Hawks are 3-0 when holding teams under the 50-mark in "WE WERE MERELY FRESHMEN..." MU relied heavily on LIZ WHALEN (21 starts) last year. Whalen, an NEC All-Rookie Team selection, set a new NEC record for three-point field goal percentage, connecting on 42.6% (43-of-101) from 3-point land last year. She also set career-highs with 24 points on a MU record seven three-pointers at Mount St. Mary s (2/1). The sharpshooter averaged 6.5 points and 2.9 rebounds per contest. Since missing the first seven games this year and nine total, Whalen has come back to post 3.5 points and 1.8 rebounds in 21 minutes per outing. Whalen, who hit the game-winning basket as time expired at Umbc last season, continued her heroics by hitting a free throw with 0.3 seconds remaining to send MU's game at Robert Morris into extra time. IT WAS RAINING THREE S MU hit 10 three-pointers in its win at LIU (1/9/03) last year, which was one made basket less than the school-record 11 (MU went 11-for-21 at Mount in an win on 2/18/98). Its 19 attempts was also a season high. The MU record for attempts in a game is 29, which was an overtime loss to LIU in the 2000 NEC Tourney. MU s record for a regulation game is 24, at Wagner (1/15/00). The NEC record for treys made in a game is 14, set by both Rider (vs. SFNY on 1/14/95) and St. Francis (N.Y.) (vs. RMU on 2/9/02). Rider holds the league mark for attempts (37) in the aforementioned game vs. St. Francis. Monmouth's nine 3-point baskets at Mount St. Mary's (1/31) is a season high, along with their 25 attempts. YOU GOT ROBBED MU guards ERIN WINSTON and LASHEENA MARTIN each posted career-highs in the steals category last season. Winston, who snagged eight steals vs. Long Island (2/14), was two steals away from tying the Hawks single-game record held by both Michelle Cappadona and Christie Pearce. Winston (2.33) and Martin (1.97) finished the season ranked 4th and 5th, respectively, in the NEC in steals per game. Martin, MU s active career-leader with 161, now ranks 10th all-time. The Hawks are stealing an average of 8.81 balls a game this season, which ranks eighth best in the league. Three Hawks, Winston (6th), NIAMH DWYER (9th) and Martin (13th) rank amongst the conference leaders in UP IN YOUR FACE "D" Monmouth has led the NEC in field goal percentage defense over the past two-plus seasons. Over that time, the Blue and White has held 33 opponents to under 35.0% shooting from the floor in a game, posting a 27-6 record in those games. Monmouth has done it seven times in , holding Rider (30.5%), Akron (20.8%), Robert Morris (31.6%), CCSU (31.6%, 32.8%) and Quinnipiac (24.6%, 32.9%) to the paultry percentages, winning all seven games.

6 IRISH EYES ARE SMILING NIAMH DWYER has shown her abilities already as an all-around performer for the Hawks after sitting out last season due to NCAA transfer rules. The Thurles, Ireland-native, who played for the Irish National Team in this summer's World University Games, has averaged a team-high 15.1 points and 4.1 rebounds, while dishing out 62 assists and hitting a team-high pointers. She posted a then career-high 26 points and nine rebounds at Wagner (1/10). The guard also led MU with 18 points, on five trifectas at #21 Auburn (1/4/04), while collecting eight rebounds. She has led MU in scoring in 15 games, including four contests in which she scored 20 points or more, after carding a new career-best with 27 points vs. Quinnipiac (2/7). The guard currently ranks 6th in the NEC in scoring and earned her first NEC Player of the Week honor on Feb. 9th. DON T CALL IT A COMEBACK, SHE S BEEN HERE FOR YEARS Guard LASHEENA HOOTIE MARTIN made a tremendous comeback from back spasms that sidelined her much of her sophomore season, to start 27 of MU s 29 games as a junior, posting career-bests in points (7.5) and rebounds (5.1). Martin contributed the game-winning three-point play at Sacred Heart with 16 seconds left and tallied her first career double-double, as she posted 12 points, 10 boards at Quinnipiac last year. The guard led the Hawks in steals (57) and was third in assists (66) and blocks (16). Currently, she is posting 7.0 points and 5.9 boards, while ranking third on the team with 40 steals. She registered her career-high of 19 points in MU's win over Iona (12/3), hitting on 7-of-14 from the field. She tallied her second career double-double with 12 points and a career-best 13 rebounds in MU's triple ot win at Mount (1/31) and tied a career-best with 13 caroms against Quinnipiac (2/7). In the QU game, Martin took over 10th place all-time in MU career steals (162). MONMOUTH SIGNS TWO FOR KIM McCLOSKEY of Valparaiso, Ind., and LINDSEY ZEGOWITZ of Damascus, Md., have signed letters of intent to further their education and basketball careers at Monmouth University, Hawks head coach Jackie DeVane announced on December 11th. McCloskey, a 6 0 guard, averaged 10 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals per game last season as a junior in her first season at Andrean High School in Merrillville, Indiana, after transferring. Kim comes from a strong family unit in Indiana, commented assistant coach Jim Baxter, an Indiana native. Her athleticism and desire will be a welcome addition to the Monmouth family. Zegowitz, a 6 2 post player, will see time at both the forward and center positions upon her arrival to Monmouth. The All-Gazette first-team player averaged 15 points and 10 rebounds per game as a junior at Damascus High School. Lindsey will provide size and scoring ability for us, stated DeVane. She will make an impact on both ends of the floor for the program. MUST HAVE BEEN COLD UP THERE Monmouth posted a program-low 20.8% from the field in its loss at St. Peter's on December 10. The 11-of-53 performance was the lowest since the Hawks connected on 22.2% (14-63) vs. Louisville on December 27, It also marked only the sixth time in program history that the Hawks posted a point total in the 30's, and the first time since February 13, 1992 when MU scored a program-low 34 points at Long Island. Ironically, MU is now 0-7 all-time when scoing in the 30's. LONG ROAD TO TRAVEL TO THE RECORD Monmouth's six-game road swing was the longest team had been on since the season, a trip in which the Blue and White posted a 4-2 record. The Hawks went 1-5 on the trip. The five road losses accounted for Monmouth's five-game skid, which was two losses away from tying the school-record of seven consecutive losses set in FIVE-GAME SWOON On Monmouth's five-game losing streak, the Hawks connected on.320 percent from the field, while allowing.445 percent to the opponents. While allowing 71.8 points per game in the streak, the Hawks totalled 53.0 ppg of their own. NOW THAT'S BREAKING A SLUMP Not only did Monmouth break its five-game losing streak on January 10th at Wagner, the Hawks did it in grand fashion, using stifling defense and efficient offense for the victory. The Hawks connected on a season-best.540 percent from the field (27-50), while allowing.373 percent to the Seahawks. The Hawks also tied a season-high with their 77 points, as both NIAMH DWYER (26 points, nine rebounds) and ERIN WINSTON (22 points) posted new career-highs. Monmouth also controlled the boards in the NEC contest, outrebounding Wagner 41-23, giving up a season-low six offensive rebounds to the Seahawks. NEC DOMINANCE Monmouth has a 12-game win streak against Robert Morris, which is the longest current NEC streak for the Hawks. The last loss to the Colonials came on 2/13/1997 in Moon Township. In the 12-game streak posted their first 100-point game since 2/4/1987 (103 points vs. LIU) when the Birds hung 101 points on the Colonials on 2/5/2001. DISHING IT OUT Not only did Monmouth stage one of its greatest comebacks in recent years in its win at Quinnipiac (1/24), but the Hawks did it on both ends of the court. The Blue and White erased a 17-point deficit at the 14:46 mark, while holding the Bobcats to just five field goals in the second half of action. In the game, guard ERIN WINSTON tied her career-high with nine assists, which included all of Monmouth's last three baskets in the win. The nine dimes ranks her in a tie for 10th place all-time in single-game assists. Rachel Goodale, Christie Pearce and Kathy Sturm hold the top spot on the chart with 13.

7 DOUBLIN' UP Junior COURTNEY LUMPKIN registered her first career double-double in the win at Quinnipiac (1/24), as she posted 11 points and a career-best 12 rebounds. Junior BRIDGETTE BYNUM tallied her first ever double-double at Mount (1/31), as she posted career-bests with 13 points and 10 boards, while LASHEENA MARTIN carded her second ever double-feature in the same game with 12 points and 13 caroms. ERIN WINSTON joined the club at Robert Morris (2/2) with her first career 'double', as she tallied 15 points and a career-high 11 rebounds. JEWONDA BRIGHT, who has 11 doubles in her career at MU, is the only other player to tally the double-double feat this season, as the senior has done it four times (at Rider, at Wagner. at CCSU, and at home most recently versus Mount St. Mary's). SCORING DEFENSE The Hawks are currently third in the conference in scoring defense, allowing 63.3 points per game to their opponents. MU has held 13 of its foes to 60 points or lower, including #21 ranked Auburn to 59 points. The Blue and White, despite losing to defending champion St. Francis, held the NEC's top scoring offense (75.7 ppg) to 58 points. HITTING THE CENTURY MARK In the Hawks victory over Mount St. Mary's (1/31), the Birds hit the century mark for the fourth time in program history. The 104 points also set a new MU single-game record, as the previous high was 103 points scored versus LIU on 2/4/1987. The last time MU hit the 100-mark was at Robert Morris on 2/5/2001. MU has given up 100 points six times in its D-I history. A NIGHT OF FIRSTS Junior BRIDGETTE BYNUM and sophomore FRANCINE BELL each tallied career-highs at Mount St. Mary's (1/31). Bynum, a reserve, registered her first career double-double as she carded 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Bell hit for a career-best 12 points, including 2-for-2 from beyond the arc. The marathon game also marked the first time in program history that the Hawks competed in a triple overtime game. It was also the first game in which six MU players scored in double figures. NATIONAL ATTENTION Following Monmouth's marathon win at the Mount (1/31), in which the two teams combined for a Monmouth-game-high 204 points, ESPN's SportsCenter commented on the affair on their nightly broadcast. FREE BASKETBALL Monmouth recently played in consecutive overtime games for the first time in program history. In two different seasons, the Hawks played in overtime twice in a three-game stretch. MU has competed in three ot games in , one away from the school record of four, set during the season (MU was 2-2 in ot that season). CLOSING IN ON SOMETHING SPECIAL Senior JEWONDA BRIGHT became just the 10th player in MU history to amass 1,000 points and 500 rebounds in her career, but the first to accomplish the feat in just three seasons, as the center posted 11 points and 13 rebounds in a home loss to Mount St. Mary's (2/16). Bright, who can end her MU career ranked in the top-10 all-time in both points and rebounds if she can amass 20 points and 47 rebounds, currently stands 12th in points and rebounds. CHARGE!!!!! As a team, MU stood in and took 38 charges in 29 games last year. LIZ WHALEN, who set East Brunswick High School s charges taken record by her junior season, led the way for the Hawks in that category. She drew a team-high 20 charges in her 28 games played, including three against CCSU (1/23). The Hawks took advantage of a drive-happy Sacred Heart squad by drawing five offensives in the Hawks road victory (1/16). In the season opener, COURTNEY LUMPKIN drew three charges on her own CHARGE METER: Niamh Dwyer 8 Liz Whalen 7 Courtney Lumpkin 7 Jewonda Bright 7 Erin Winston 1 LaSheena Martin 1 UP NEXT... Monmouth returns to action on Saturday, February 21st, when it hosts St. Francis College at 7:00 p.m. at the Ritacco Center in Toms River, N.J., as part of the Ocean County Girls and Women in Sports Celebration.
