THE HAWKS UNDER COACH DEVANE Season Record NEC Result NEC quarters NEC semis TOTALS NEC Tourn. Appearances GAME TEN - SACRED HEART PIONEERS SACRED HEART 70, MONMOUTH 50 January 8, 2004 Fairfield, Conn. (Pitt Center) Still on the longest road swing since the season, the Monmouth Hawks losing streak increased to five games, as Sacred Heart snapped their own three-game losing skid Thursday night, defeating Monmouth, 70-50, to record their first Northeast Conference win of the year. The Pioneers' offensive dynamic duo of sophomore Nicolle Rubino and freshman Amanda Pape were at it again with 18 points apiece while junior Colleen White had a career-night with 16 in the win. The two teams plodded through the first half, which saw 23 combined turnovers. MU jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the first 4:17, as senior LaSheena Martin capped off the run with a three-pointer from the wing. After the Pioneers tied the score at 7-7 for the first tie of the contest, sophomore Liz Whalen connected on a trey from the corner in her first offensive possession. With the score tied at at the 7:38 mark, SHU finished the half on a 16-6 run. A White jumper followed by a three-point play by Colleen Duggan gave SHU a five-point lead, Monmouth junior Erin Winston buried a three to knock the lead back to two at 5:21, but the Hawks could only muster three free throws to end the half, to account for the deficit. Sacred Heart took advantage of the Blue and White s foul trouble on the front line, as Jewonda Bright had two quick fouls, while reserve center Bridgette Bynum ended the first half with four fouls. The Pioneers were able to go over the top of the Hawks and get easy buckets underneath due to the Hawks lack of size. Monmouth missed its first five shots of the second half and were held scoreless for the first six minutes and twenty-five seconds of play, as Sacred Heart built a 20-point bulge. Junior Courtney Lumpkin nailed a jump shot at 13: 35, which were the Hawks first points of the stanza. White, who played a career-high 23 minutes, made her presence felt in the second half, pouring in 10 of her 16 points to eclipse her previous high of nine and finished the game seven-of-eight from the floor and two-of-two from the free throw line. She also made an impact on the boards, pulling down seven rebounds to establish another career mark. For Monmouth, now 4-6 overall and 0-1 in the NEC, Lumpkin finished with 12 points in the loss. Standout center Bright was marred in foul trouble most of the game, scoring just six points with one rebound in 16 minutes of action. Martin and leading scorer Niamh Dwyer each carded seven points, while Martin pulled down a team-high seven boards. As a team, the Hawks shot 28.6% (15-50) from the field and 36.4% (4-11) from three-point range while turning the ball over 25 times.

3 OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN Seniors LASHEENA "HOOTIE" MARTIN and JEWONDA BRIGHT were selected as the team captains for the season. HAWKS PICKED FOURTH IN PRESEASON POLL The Monmouth Hawks were picked to finish fourth in the Northeast Conference Preseason Coaches Poll, as released by the conference on November 11, during its preseason teleconference. Defending NEC champion St. Francis University, led by NEC Player of the Year candidate Beth Swink, was the pick to repeat as the league s best, receiving seven first place votes, out of a possible ten. Quinnipiac, led by last season's NEC Player of the Year Ashlee Kelly, received three first place votes to grab the number two slot in the poll, while Mount St. Mary's was picked third. Sacred Heart received the final first place vote, and tied with Monmouth for fourth place in the standings, while Wagner, the host of this season's NEC Tournament, came in sixth. Long Island claimed the seventh spot, while Fairleigh Dickinson rounded out the tournament qualifying field in the eighth slot. Central Connecticut State, Robert Morris and St. Francis College ranked ninth through eleventh respectively to round out the NEC field. GETTIN' THERE MU s longest win streak in its Division I history is 10 games, which was done twice, once during the season, and once again during The Hawks put together two, four-game win streaks last season, en route to their second consecutive post season appearance. STARTING OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOT Monmouth's win over Norfolk State in the season opener for the Hawks was the first win by a Monmouth squad in a season opener since the season, when the Blue and White was victorious on the road at Fordham, defeating the Rams on November 14, The Hawks last win in a home season-opening contest was November 19, 1997, when they bested Fordham in overtime, Monmouth is now 7-15 in season openers since the program turned Division I. BEST START EVER... Monmouth's 2-0 start to the season marked the first time since the campaign that the Hawks started at that rate. The Blue and White have never begun a year 3-0, but were also 4-1 in , as well. HAWKS CATCH THE INJURY BUG Without a full compliment of players throughout last season, the Hawks claimed the number three seed in the NEC Tournament and made an appearance in the semifinals for the first time since the 1999 Tournament. COURTNEY LUMPKIN (torn ACL), ERIN WINSTON (stress fracture in shin), LASHAUNDA MERRIWEATHER (stress fracture in foot) and CHRISTINE AR- SEGO (ankle) all missed time due to injuries. Although "healthy" to start this season, NEC All-Rookie performer LIZ WHALEN will miss the opening to her sophomore campaign after surgery for compartment syndrome. "JAY BIRD SHOWING BRIGHT COLORS Co-captain JEWONDA BRIGHT returned as the Hawks' top scorer and rebounder from last year. The center, who led MU in field goal percentage the last two seasons (ranking 19th in the country as a sophomore), averaged 13.7 points and 5.6 rebounds per game as a junior. She now ranks 14th all-time on the Monmouth scoring chart with 878 points. After ten games, Bright is second on the team in points per game (12.2), and leads in rebounds per game (7.4) and field goal percentage (.534), which ranks sixth best in the NEC. WELCOME TO THE BOYLER ROOM The Monmouth women s basketball team has posted a mark in Boylan Gym in the three-plus seasons under coach JACKIE DEVANE, including an 11-2 campaign during the season. The Hawks went 6-7 in Boylan last season, which included a stretch of four consecutive home league losses for the first time since RECORDS Watch - Career POINTS SCORED - CAREER 1. ROAD WARRIORS... Last season, Monmouth went a combined 13-4 away from Boylan Gym, with losses at UCF, Seton Hall, St. Francis (Pa.) and versus UMBC in the NEC Tournament. The Hawks had posted eight straight road wins, breaking the school record for consecutive road victories (six) set from January 3, 1987 to February 2, 1987, and tying a schoolmark for consecutive NEC road wins, set during the season. MU is 2-6 away from Boylan this year. THAT S WHY THEY CALL IT CHARITY... As a team, Monmouth shot 69.4% from the free throw line last season, which ranked them 3rd out of the 12 teams in the NEC. The Birds made (412) and attempted (594) more free throws than any other team in the NEC during the season. The Hawks improved on its ninth place showing in that category from the season before. MU is connecting on 69.7% ( ) this season, which currently ranks fourth in the Northeast Conference. CLOSE CALLS... The Blue and White was 5-4 in games decided by five points or less during the season. In its one-point win at Sacred Heart (1/16), MU broke a four-game losing streak in one-point games. The last one-point win for the Hawks came on 1/25/01 when LaToya Thompson s buzzer-beater topped St. Francis [Pa.], while it also broke the 10th longest home win streak in the NCAA for the Pioneers at the time. TEAM DEFENSE In , the Hawks led the NEC and ranked 15th nationally in field goal percentage defense, allowing just a 36.0% success rate for their opponents. The Blue and White also ranked fourth in the NEC in scoring defense, giving up 57.8 points per game, which also ranked 25th in the NCAA. Currently, the Hawks are holding thier opponents to a combined 38.8% from the floor this season, including a 20.8% showing from Akron (11/30), which was the lowest percentage since MU held Robert Morris to a paultry 19.4% from the floor (3/1/03). The Hawks rank second in the NEC in field MY WALLET S TOO SMALL TO HOLD MY 50 S, AND MY DIAMOND SHOES ARE TOO TIGHT... MU held its opponents to 59 or less points on 19 occasions last year, including nine of its last 11 opponents, winning 16 of the 19 contests overall. The Hawks won four straight games while accomplishing the feat. The Birds held Robert Morris to a season-low 34 points this season, the lowest output since 1/26/89 (St. Francis N.Y points). The Hawks opened the season holding Norfolk State to 51 points and held Akron (11/30) to a season-low 40 points. MU is 3-1 in 2003 when holding its opponents to under the 60 point mark. REJECTION IS A GOOD THING MU holds the NEC record for blocks in a single game (15), a record that was set against FDU on January 9, Last season, MU ranked second in the league in blocked shots (3.14), with a second-best 91 swats. Monmouth ranks seventh in the NEC in 2003, averaging 2.10 blocks per game. PARTYING LIKE IT S Since January of the season, the Hawks had not held consecutive opponents under 50 points, when the Hawks beat Queens (65-46) and then defeated Loyola [Md.], The Blue and White accomplished the same feat twice in and did it again on three occasions in MU held a total of seven teams under the 50-point total last year, including in the final three games. "WE WERE ONLY FRESHMEN..." MU relied heavily on freshmen last season, as LIZ WHALEN (21 starts) contributed mightily for the Hawks. Whalen, an NEC All-Rookie Team selection, set a new NEC record for three-point field goal percentage, connecting on 42.6% (43-of-101) from 3-point land last year. She also set career-highs with 24 points on a Monmouth record seven three-pointers at Mount St. Mary s (2/1). The sharpshooter averaged 6.5 points and 2.9 rebounds per contest. IT WAS RAINING THREE S Monmouth connected on season-high 10 three-point field goals in its win at LIU (1/9/03) last year, which was one made basket less than the school-record 11 (MU went 11-for-21 at Mount St. Mary s in an win on 2/18/98). Its 19 attempts was also a season high. The MU record for attempts in a single game is 29, which was an overtime loss to LIU in the 2000 NEC Tournament first round. MU s record for a regulation game is 24, at Wagner in a loss on 1/15/00. The NEC record for three-pointers made in a single game is 14, set by both Rider (vs. SFNY on 1/14/95) and St. Francis (N.Y.) (vs. Robert Morris on 2/9/02). Rider holds the league mark for single-game attempts at 37 in the aforementioned game vs. St. Francis.

5 YOU GOT ROBBED Monmouth guards ERIN WINSTON and LASHEENA MARTIN each posted career-highs in the steals category last season. Winston, who snagged eight steals vs. Long Island (2/14), was two steals away from tying the Hawks single-game record held by both Michelle Cappadona and Christie Pearce. Martin, MU s active career-leader with 142, tallied seven steals in the Birds win at St. Francis [N.Y.] (2/18). Winston (2.33) and Martin (1.97) finished the season ranked 4th and 5th, respectively, in the NEC in steals per game. The twosome continued its thieving ways by tallying four steals apiece in the season opener vs. Norfolk State (11/22) and five total steals at Rider (11/25). Winston collected her 100th career steal in the win over Iona (12/3) and six more vs. Columbia (12/7). The Hawks are stealing an average of 9.40 balls a game this season, which is sixth best in the NEC. IRISH EYES ARE SMILING Sophomore NIAMH DWYER has shown her abilities already as an all-around performer for the Blue and White after sitting out last season due to NCAA transfer regulations. The Thurles, Ireland-native has averaged a team-high 13.9 points and 4.7 rebounds, while dishing out a team-high 29 assists in nine games. She posted a career-high 21 points vs. Columbia (12/7). The guard led MU with 18 points, on five trifectas at #21 Auburn (1/4/04), while collecting a career-best eight rebounds. DON T CALL IT A COMEBACK, SHE S BEEN HERE FOR YEARS Guard LASHEENA HOOTIE MARTIN made a tremendous comeback from back spasms that sidelined her much of her sophomore season, to start 27 of Monmouth s 29 games as a junior. The guard averaged a career-best 7.5 points and 5.1 rebounds a contest. Martin posted two nine-rebound games, while she also contributed the game-winning three-point play at Sacred Heart with 16 seconds remaining. In the Hawks loss to Quinnipiac, Martin tallied her first career double-double, as she posted 12 points and 10 rebounds. The 5' 7" guard led the Hawks in steals (57) and was third in assists (66) and blocks (16). Currently, she is posting 7.3 points and 4.8 boards, while ranking third on the team with 17 steals. She registered her career-high of 19 points in MU's win over Iona (12/3), hitting on 7-of-14 from the field. She eclipsed the 500-point plateau for her career with her seven-point performance at Sacred Heart (1/8). UP IN YOUR FACE "D" Monmouth has led the NEC in field goal percentage defense over the past two-plus seasons. Over that time, the Blue and White has held 28 opponents to under 35.0% shooting from the floor in a game, posting a 22-6 record in those games. Monmouth has done it twice in 2003, holding Rider (11/25) to just 30.5% (18-59) in its win over the Broncs and Akron to 20.8% (11-53). MUST HAVE BEEN COLD UP THERE Monmouth posted a program-low 20.8% from the field in its loss at St. Peter's on December 10. The 11-of-53 performance was the lowest since the Hawks connected on 22.2% (14-63) vs. Louisville on December 27, It also marked only the sixth time in program history that the Hawks posted a point total in the 30's, and the first time since February 13, 1992 when MU scored a program-low 34 points at Long Island. Ironically, MU is 0-7 when scoing in the 30's. LONG ROAD TO TRAVEL TO THE RECORD Monmouth's current six-game road swing is the longest the team has been on since the season, a trip in which the Blue and White posted a 4-2 record. The Hawks are currently 0-5 on this trip. The five road losses account for Monmouth's current five-game skid, which is two losses away from tying the school-record of seven losses set in FIVE-GAME SWOON On Monmouth's five-game losing streak, the Hawks have connected on.320 percent from the field, while allowing.445 percent to the opponents. While allowing 71.8 points per game in the streak, the Hawks have totalled 53.0 ppg of their own. CHARGE!!!!! As a team, MU stood in and took 38 charges in 29 games last year. LIZ WHALEN, who set East Brunswick High School s charges taken record by her junior season, led the way for the Hawks in that category. She drew a team-high 20 charges in her 28 games played, including three against CCSU (1/23). The Hawks took advantage of a drive-happy Sacred Heart squad by drawing five offensives in the Hawks road victory (1/16). In the season opener, COURTNEY LUMPKIN drew three charges on her own CHARGE METER: Courtney Lumpkin 5 Niamh Dwyer 3 Jewonda Bright 2 Erin Winston 1 LaSheena Martin 1 Liz Whalen 1 UP NEXT... Monmouth returns to action as the Hawks return home on Thursday, January 15th, when the Blue and White puts its 10-game win streak over Robert Morris on the line. Tip-off for the NEC battle is set for 7:00 p.m., in Boylan Gym.
