3 CATS REBOUND The Bearcats defeated Niagara University in a thrilling match. Taylor Young scored the game winner with 3.2 seconds left, which was also her third goal of the game. Kylie Ramsland led the Bearcats with four goals. Meg Bell and Young each schored three goals while four other Bearcats tallied one goal each to lift the Bearcats to a 2-1 record. I think coming into this game we had a really rough week and I think you could tell that by how we struggled in the first half and a little bit early on in the second half, said head coach Gina Oliver. After a tough road loss to Oregon and a rough week of practice, the Bearcats were able to dig in and pull themselves out of a hole to get the win. While the win improved the Bearcats record to 2-1, Oliver saw something else in the Bearcats home opening win - the ability to find a way to win. GULMI THE GOALIE Freshman Meg Gulmi has started every game in the cage this season for the Bearcats. She has anchored the defense with 27 total saves including six saves against Niagara- one late in the game that resulted in a much-needed defensive stop for the Bearcats. Though she s only a freshman, she is earning her stripes and has become a consistent force on the backend for the Bearcats. NO NEED FOR CAPTAIN KIRK- BEARCATS HAVE CAPTAIN KYLIE Kylie Ramsland scored five goals against Niagara and now leads the team with seven total goals. Kylie did it in the beginning and kind of manhandled them and Taylor (Young) did it at the end. Both of their performances were big for us today, said Oliver after the win over Niagara. STEADY IMPROVEMENT Through three games last year, the Bearcat defense allowed 42 goals. This year, the defense has only allowed 35 through three games. Through the Bearcats first three games last year they allowed an average of 14 goals per game; this season they have cut that average to 11.6 goals allowed per game. A win Saturday would give UC three wins, tying the number of wins from last season. DEFENDING BEARCATNATION The last time the Bearcats won their home opener was March 8, 2009 in an thriller over Villanova. Cincinnati was led by then-sophomores Natalie Starvaggi and Laura Simanski who each netted three goals. DUCK HUNTING Kylie Ramsland scored two goals as the Bearcats dropped a 16-5 decision to the Oregon Ducks. Megan Bell, Ashley Helmrath and Marissa Pierson each netted one goal for UC. Freshman goalkeeper Meg Gulmi (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) faced 38 shots against the Ducks and made 13 saves. CAT TRACKS The last time the Bearcats had four players with 3 or more goals through two games was just last year. Katie Kiriazoglou (4), Meg Bell (3), Kylie Ramsland (7), Marissa Pierson (3), and MacKenzie Parsons (3) all contributed goals in the first two games of the season. This year four Bearcats have contributed 3 or more goals. Freshman Courtney Curtis (5), sophomore Meg Bell (3), redshirt senior Kylie Ramsland (3), and junior Taylor Young (3) all have all scored to lift the Bearcats to a 1-1 start. WELCOME TO UC COACH OLIVER! Head coach Gina Oliver is only Cincinnati s second head coach in the history of the program. Oliver won her very first game as the Bearcats head coach on February 15, defeating Coastal Carolina, With a win over the Purple Eagles, the Bearcats will be off to the best start in program history under a first year head coach. AND THE HONORS ROLL Courtney Curtis proved to be a defensive problem for Coastal Carolina, netting five goals and one assist in UC s season opener. For her efforts, Curtis was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for the week of February 16. STARTING OFF ON THE RIGHT PAW The last time the Bearcats won their season opener was March 5, 2010 against the University of Detroit. The Bearcats prevailed It was an allaround great team performance by the Bearcats with eight different players one goal or more. The last time the Bearcats won back-to-back games to start the season was the season when they started 3-0 with victories over Presbyterian College, Duquesne and Robert Morris. TEAM WORK MAKES THE DREAM WORK Along with Courtney Curtis five goal performance, the Bearcats got production from many other key players. Junior Taylor Young (3) and Sophomore Meg Bell (2) each contributed multiple goals, while Katie Kiriazoglou, Kylie Ramsland, and Ashley Helmrath each netted one goal against Coastal Carolina. NEW HOME Cincinnati will make Sheakley Athletics Complex its new home for the 2013 season. The first three games of the season will be played in Nippert Stadium and then the Bearcats will move to Sheakley for the remainder of the season. Sheakley Athletics Complex has two fields, one 100 yards in length and the other 50 yards. The complex not only offers all sports additional practice space, the 100-yard field transforms into an indoor practice facility from November to late February with an air-supported bubble inflated over the field. BEARCAPTAINS The 2013 team captains are Kelsey Conway, Katie Kiriazoglou, Adrianna Piontek, Kylie Ramsland and Katelyn Wettig. TOP CATS The Bearcats return three of the top four scorers from last season in Marissa Pierson (27 goals), Kylie Ramsland (22 goals) and Meg Bell (21 goals). Also returning are Katie Kiriazoglou, who was second on the team in assists last year.
