1 PANTHER NEWS SOUTH ADELAIDE BASKETBALL CLUB NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2016 Presidents Message Welcome to our first newsletter of I trust that everyone has had a good break over the Christmas period. The new year provides this club with some exciting opportunities to achieve success at all levels and to increase the membership and membership experience. Integral to this success are the current group of volunteers that provide our membership with their experience, passion and willingness to provide our members with an environment conducive to improvement within the sport that they love. I had the opportunity to see the representation of numerous junior teams at the recent Eltham/ Dandenong Tournament in Victoria in late January. Congratulations to all the teams that participated and particularly those teams that semi-finals and grand finals. The South Adelaide teams performed with spirit and conviction and provided the mainly Victorian opponents with some competitive games. Well done to all the players, parents, coaches and managers that participated in a successful tournament. As I hope everyone is aware, Claire Johnson has been appointed the full time Basketball Operations Manager of the club. Claire will be working closely with myself and the executive committee to put into place a number of policies and procedures for the club. Claire will be responsible for the day to day management of the club and has the full support of the Club committee to communicate with all the SABC members, sponsors and any other commercial relationships. Claire has met with a number of the key stakeholders in the club and will continue to provide support to the members of the Executive Committee to ensure that the ongoing strategies for sponsorship, fundraising and our commercial arrangements are standardised. Please feel free to contact Claire at any stage as our main contact for the club moving forward. I would like to remind all members that communications to Basketball SA, are required to be made by South Adelaide Basketball Club Representatives of the executive committee or Claire. There are not to be any direct communications from members to Basketball SA Staff or Management. This is a request from Basketball SA and is a club policy. Over the coming months, there will be noticeable changes to the way the club operates, in particular with regards to the registration process for the Winter Season. I would like to wish everyone well for the remainder of the Summer Season. I also wish our Premier League Players and Coaches all the best for the coming season, with the start on the 11 th of March, with a home game. I encourage all members to come and experience the Premier League atmosphere. The club will be looking to providing different experiences and various levels of participation to the Juniors throughout the season. 4 Callum Deacon FUNDRAISING The Welcome to Australia Day event is a day organised by Marion Council in conjunction with sporting clubs and associations from around the Marion area. The aim of the day is to welcome new immigrants, migrants and or refugees who have settled in the area, giving kids and adults alike an opportunity to try new sports while meeting other people from the community. South Adelaide Basketball Club (SABC) and our major sponsor The SA Aquatic and Leisure Centre (SAALC) along with several other local sporting clubs, participated in what turned out to be a fantastic day for all involved. The event consisted of an afternoon of swimming and waterslides at SAALC followed by BBQ snags at the St Elizabeth Anglican Church just across the road from the SAALC. There the group was met by representatives from several different sporting clubs, the police and even local members of parliament. There was much interest in Australian Rules Football (some were a little perplexed by it though), Soccer and Cricket, and even the police car sirens interested the kids for a while, however it was Basketball that drew the big crowds! WELCOME TO AUSTRALIA DAY It just shows how universal and down right awesome the game of Basketball really is! The event was a big success and I look forward to representing SABC at similar functions in the future! NBL FUN DAY The NBL match between the Adelaide 36ers and the Illawarra Hawks Saturday 30th of January 7pm was always going to be an important game. Only days after the Hawks had broken the Sixers 6 game winning streak Adelaide had a chance to get some revenge. There was another reason why this match was so important, it was the South Adelaide Basketball Club's annual NBL Fun Day! The NBL Fun Day has become an important fundraiser for the club over the last couple of years. As many of you know unfortunately due to the NBL not scheduling the Sixers for a Sunday afternoon game it was impractical to go ahead with what has been a successful model of game followed by pizzas and a get together on the lawn afterwards. With all this said Kylie Revink (committee/ fundraising sub committee member) did a fantastic job organising the tickets for the night. On behalf of all members I thank you Kylie for all her hard work! I m pleased to report that a total of 269 tickets were sold with the total amount raised being over $1000. To make things even better the 36ers did get their revenge, beating the Hawks
5 GET INVOLVED As part of South Adelaide Basketball Club's fundraising efforts this year we have registered for the People's Choice Community Lottery. Tickets are only $2 and 100% of the money we raise will go straight back into the Club. There are loads of prizes to be won and an early bird draw on 12th April To be eligible for the early bird prizes please buy your $2 ticket before 31st March. This year s online-exclusive early bird prize is a Hyundai Accent Auto valued at $18,296. Ticket sales close on 31st August We would appreciate your support by purchasing some tickets and sharing this link with your family and friends. FUNDRAISING AND SPONSORSHIP SABC are keen to offer sponsorship opportunities to club members who have their own business or direct contacts / links to businesses, so if you are such a member and/or know somebody or a business who might be interested in sponsoring our club, please contact Claire Johnson. All sponsorship or fundraising which involves the South Adelaide Basketball Club or its members in any way must be approved by the SABC Committee. This is not designed to discourage members from seeking sponsorship or making an effort to raise funds for players, teams, etc., but rather to ensure that the interests of the club as a whole and its members are protected. A copy of the SABC Sponsorship & Fundraising Approval form is available for downloading from our website or you can contact Claire Johnson at sponsorship@southadelaidebasketall.com.au if you wish to discuss this further. 5
6 Message from the SABC Treasurer South Adelaide Basketball Club has almost 800 playing members making it one of the biggest clubs in South Australia. The key to success for any sporting club is to be financially viable. Last financial year the South Adelaide Basketball Club posted a significant operating loss. The major reason for this loss was unpaid membership fees. As a result the club has now adopted the following strategies in an effort to ensure membership fees are paid on time, No Pay, No Play 22 January 2016 was the deadline for all summer fees to be paid or have a payment plan organised with the Treasurer. Unfortunately there were still a large number of unpaid fees after this date so the next stage of no pay, no play was enforced. I know many people feel that is a harsh policy to implement, however after speaking with other clubs, this is the only way to get fees paid in a reasonable time frame. The club finance committee is made up of volunteers who do not have the time to chase outstanding membership fees. Debt Collector A debt collection agency has been engaged to recover debts from non-current members. There are a significant amount of unpaid fees from previous seasons. Payment Plans If you require a payment plan to assist with the payment of fees please send the Treasurer an . The only condition is that the payment plan for winter fees must have the fees paid in full by the end of the winter season. There will be no carry over. Early Bird Discount Phased out The Early Bird Discount is being phased out and will no longer be available from the 2016 winter season for all grades. Given the size of our unpaid fees it has proved to have had little impact on getting fees paid on time. Also the original discount of $50 per season has become unsustainable due to the cost to the club and lost revenue. I will let you do the maths on the cost for summer and winter season. Online registration and payment system An online registration and payment system via Sporting Pulse will be implemented for winter season This will mean that members will be required to go onto the South Adelaide website to update their personal details and pay membership fees. Member will receive an in the coming days with instructions on how to register and pay online along with the revised fee structure policy. The online system will bring South Adelaide into line with most other sporting organisations and remove the current manual process. GREG CUNNINGHAM TREASURER
