1 Administration president Dear Fans: On behalf of the administration, faculty and Advisory Council of McGill-Toolen Catholic High School, I am very happy to welcome you to today s game. Your attendance at this event demonstrates to all of the athletes who will compete that you support them, and that you stand behind their efforts to give their very best in a spirit of fair play and good sportsmanship. McGill-Toolen has a long tradition of excellence in athletics, and we are certainly proud of this year s Lady Jackets. We are indeed fortunate to have Coach Carla Berry leading the Lady Jackets. She is also one of our alums, having been one of the most outstanding players to come through McGill-Toolen. She and her assistants, Mike Berry, and former players, Sha Sha Buchanan and Allyson Cooney, have done an admirable job of preparing their players for this season. Our prayer for the girls on both teams is that God will keep them healthy, bring them closer to Himself, and assist them to learn the virtues which athletics is so admirably suited to teach perseverance, hope, respect for self and others, and the pursuit of excellence. We are grateful for all the benefactors of the Lady Jacket Basketball Program, many of whom have advertised in this program. I encourage you to support them, and to patronize them whenever possible. McGill-Toolen has been providing a quality education for over 100 years. 3 Administration principal Dearest Parents, Friends, and Fans, On behalf of the McGill-Toolen administration, faculty, and students, I want to welcome you to our girls basketball season. I am looking forward to another thrilling season with Coach Carla Berry. She brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to our program. Her understanding of the game, her experience as a player at McGill-Toolen, her collegiate play, as well as her coaching make her a phenomenon. I know she will continue the long and successful tradition established by the McGill-Toolen girls basketball program. Our coaching staff includes Mike Berry and two former Lady Jackets, Assistant Varsity coach Sha Sha Buchanan and Head JV coach Allyson Cooney. Coach Berry and her very talented assistant coaches have been working extremely hard to prepare for our rigorous game schedule. Our basketball players have put in many hours of practice, conditioning, summer camps, and open gym as they prepared for the upcoming season. They are a remarkable group of young women. Their ability to maintain such high academic standards while preparing for and participating in a rigorous sports season is remarkable. The McGill-Toolen Catholic family would like to thank you for your support of our sports program. Your presence at the game is an inspiration to the coaches and players. In the spirit of McGill-Toolen tradition, we anticipate a great season of rivalries and lively competition within our region and beyond. We look forward to seeing you there. 4 Administration athletic director Welcome to the Portier Center, home of Yellow Jacket Basketball. We hope that you enjoy the game and we pray that all of the athletes leave the arena free of injury. We want you to cheer for your team while keeping in mind that good sportsmanship is expected by our athletes, coaches and fans alike. We are all role models to our youngest of fans. Our basketball team has worked very hard to prepare for this season. These young women competing tonight are a part of a long and colorful tradition of McGill-Toolen Basketball. Under the leadership of Carla Berry, our basketball team has become one of the most competitive programs in the state. I am confident that this team is worthy of this reputation. Our team has worked hard with the goal to return to Birmingham once again for the State Finals. I would like to thank our Booster Club, parents, alumni and supporters of our basketball program. The support that you have shown through the years has been an integral part of our success. Our cheerleaders, under the guidance of Susan Gaston Jones, add so much spirit and enthusiasm to our games. Our advertisers in this program contribute largely to the financial success of our program. Please support these businesses whenever possible. Thank you for your attendance at the game. 5 Carla Berry Head Coach Women s Basketball Coaching Staff Carla Berry returned to her alma mater in 2010 as head girls basketball coach of the Lady Jackets. During her tenure, the Lady Jackets have advanced to the Sweet Sixteen five times, captured two 6A Area Championships, and one 6A Area tournament title. In 2014 McGill transitioned to 7A, Alabama s newest and largest classification. In all three years McGill has won the 7A regular and tournament title as well as the South Regional Championship enroute to the 7A Final Four including last season. After graduating six seniors, four whom were starters, many expected the season to be a rebuilding year for the Lady Jackets. Instead a new cast of characters were ready and found their way back to the state tournament for a third consecutive year. The team finished the season 27-7 and narrowly lost in the semi-finals to Spain Park in overtime. In , Berry led her alma mater back to the State tournament for the first time since 2003 and to the championship game since she and her teammates won the title in In the inaugural 7A Girls Basketball State tournament the Lady Jackets knocked off No.1 Huntsville in impressive fashion, but came up short in the championship game versus Jeff Davis. Berry was named the Alabama Sports Writer Association A Coach of the Year. In 2016 the Lady Jackets knocked No. 1 Hazel Green but again fell to defending champions Jeff Davis. Berry is a 1988 graduate of McGill where she was a four year letterwinner in basketball under legendary Coach Becky Dickinson. In her senior season, Berry helped lead the 29-0 Lady Jackets to a 6A State Championship and a No.6 USA Today national ranking. She continued her career as a student-athlete at Louisiana State University. During her LSU career, Berry made three NCAA tournament appearances and was a member of the 1991 SEC Tournament Championship team. Berry was a three time receiptant of the LSU Athletic Director s Cup for Academic Excellence and a member of the 1992 SEC All Academic Team. In 1993 she earned a Bachelors in Mass Communication, Advertising. Berry s coaching resume spans 11 years on the collegiate level including stops at South Alabama, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, St. John s and LSU. In her six years as recruiting coordinator at LSU, Berry helped recruit three nationally top five classes culminating into one SEC Tournament title, three SEC Championships and five consecutive Final Four appearances. 5

6 Coaching Staff Allyson Cooney Head JV Coach Coach Allyson Cooney returns as the head coach of the junior varsity team in her third season. Cooney led the JV team to a 15-4 record last season. In she led the freshmen team to an impressive 14-0 record. She is a 2010 graduate of McGill-Toolen where she lettered in basketball her junior and senior years. She went on to continue her career at Franciscan University, a NCAA Division III program in Steubenville, Ohio. During the 2012 season, as a starter for the Lady Barons, Cooney was one of the top three leading scorers and rebounders. She was also a member of the AMCC All-Conference Academic team for the and seasons. She graduated in 2014 with a degree in Mathematics. She then moved on to St. Joseph s Academy in Baton Rouge to teach and coach as an assistant coach for junior varsity and varsity basketball teams in During her time, the varsity team won the District title for the first time in 15 years. Cooney teaches Algebra and Geometry at McGill. Sha Buchanan Assistant Coach Sha Buchanan a native of Mobile, Alabama and McGill graduate, class of 2010, is in her third season with the Lady Jacket coaching staff. Her expertise as a post coach has been instrumental in the individual development of post players. Buchanan was a three year starter for the Lady Jackets Basketball and Dirty Dozen Volleyball team. She earned Kiwanis Club Player of the Week, All-Area and All-Region honors during her junior and senior year as a power forward for the Lady Jackets. During her varsity volleyball career, she helped lead the team to three state tournament appearances earning Kiwanis Club Player of the Week, All Area Tournament team, All Region Tournament team (twice) and All State as a junior and senior. In 2010, she was named Mobile Area Coaches Female Athlete of the Year and won the McGill-Toolen Student Athlete award. Buchanan went on to play both basketball and volleyball at Spring Hill College. In volleyball, she was four-time All Conference and led her team to four NAIA Conference Tournament Championship appearances. Her senior year the Lady Badgers won the conference tournament and she was named honorable mention NAIA All-American. As an undersized post, Buchanan was a three year starter for the basketball team. Her senior year she averaged 12 points, nine rebounds while shooting 45% from the field and 85% from the line. In 2014, she graduated from Spring Hill College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Relations and Advertising. 6

7 Coaching Staff Mike Berry Assistant Coach Coach Mike Berry returns for his second stint with the Lady Jackets after serving as the girls varsity head coach at St. Luke s last season. Berry previously served as a Lady Jacket varsity assistant while overseeing the freshmen and junior varsity programs from 2013 to During that time he was instrumental in the Lady Jackets back to back 7A Area and Regional Championships as well as State Runner- up finishes in 2015 and His key contributions were most evident in the Lady Jackets stifling, pressure defense. Leading the way was starting point guard Rekha Berry, the daughter of Mike and Geeta Berry. Rekha is now a sophomore and point guard at Division I Tennessee State University. Coach Berry s impressive basketball resume spans over 15 on the high school and collegiate level including five years as head coach of the Lady Rams at the University of Mobile. While at the University of Mobile, Berry led his NAIA Rams to win over four Division II programs as well as win over Division I member Alabama State. In 2010 the team posted a ranked earning a NAIA National Top 25. As an assistant, Berry won two NAIA National Championships at his alma mater, Oklahoma City with the women s basketball team in 1999 and He graduated from Oklahoma City in 1991 after winning a NAIA National Championship as player with the men s basketball team that season. Kelly Vinson Physical Therapist Assistant/Athletic Trainer Kelly Vinson returns for her 3rd year as Athletic Trainer and Physical Therapist Assistant with the McGill-Toolen Sports Medicine Team. She is employed by Encore Rehabilitation and works with Gary Zakutney to provide medical care to athletes on campus during the school day and after school throughout the year. A native of Brookhaven, MS., Kelly graduated with honors from Brookhaven High School. She attended the University of Mississippi where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science. She continued her education at Hinds Community College where she received an Associates of Science- Physical Therapist Assistant degree. Kelly s last stop was at the University of Southern Mississippi where she obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training. While at Southern Miss, she worked with the football and volleyball teams. Kelly is a Nationally Certified Athletic Trainer. She is a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association and the Alabama Physical Therapy Association. She holds current licensures for both as well as a Professional Rescuer Certification from the American Heart Association. 7
