1 NOTE DAME SEASON IN EVIEW Sophomore standout Jillian Byers became the first Notre Dame freshman women s lacrosse player to be named All- American in The Northport, N.Y., native was second in scoring for the Irish in her rookie year with 54 goals and 24 assists for 78 points.

2 Season in eview Irish Make 2006 Season the Best in Program s 10-Year History Notre Dame makes biggest turnaround in NCAA women s lacrosse history and advances to NCAA semifinals; Crysti Foote leads nation in scoring and becomes first two-time All-American for the Irish I IS What a difference a year makes! Just ask the Notre Dame women s lacrosse team. Coming off a disappointing 3-12 season in 2005, the Fighting Irish quickly righted the ship and rolled to the best record in the program s 10-year history in 2006, going 15-4 overall while advancing all the way to the NCAA semifinals. For the Irish, the trip to the NCAA tournament proved that the 2005 season was just a minor bump in the road as they quickly set their sights on putting that season behind them and moved on to setting a new standard for the program. Along the way, the Irish smashed just about every record in the program s history setting new marks for goals, assists, points, shots, wins while garnering more individual accolades than ever before. For head coach Tracy Coyne, the turnaround came due to hard work on and off the field by the veteran coach and her talented staff. First, the Irish brought in one of the top recruiting classes in the nation, a group that included several players who stepped into the lineup and contributed right away. Next came the preseason conditioning and hard work developing the players who would go on to turn in career years at Notre Dame. The Irish racked up 263 goals for a average per game and were held to less than 10 goals just once, in the season-ending, 14-8, loss in the NCAA semifinals to Dartmouth. Leading the Irish attack in 2006 was senior Crysti Foote, who had one of those years players dream about. The dynamic scoring machine led the nation in scoring with 74 goals and 40 assists for 114 points, all school records. Her season output helped her finish her career as Notre Dame s all-time leader in each of those categories. Foote, the team s most valuable player, was named the BIG EAST and IWLCA attack player of the year and was one of five finalists for the prestigious Tewaaraton Trophy. A unanimous first team all-big EAST selection, the Suffern, N.Y., native became the first Notre Dame player to be named All-American twice in her career. Foote was a first team IWLCA All-American, as well as, a first team Inside Lacrosse and womenslacrosse.com selection. The Irish also had two other All-Americans in the everyday lineup who were perfect compliments to the senior midfield/attack player. Following Foote on the scoring list was freshman Jillian Byers. The talented rookie scored seven points (5g, 2a) in her first collegiate game and never looked back, collecting 54 goals and 24 assists for 78 points. Those numbers, the new freshman records in each category, would have set single-season Notre Dame records if not for the year that Foote had in The Northport, N.Y., native was a unanimous first team all-big EAST selection and became the first freshman All-American selection for the Irish when she was chosen as a second team IWLCA and womenslacrosse.com All-America and third team Inside Lacrosse. The third member of Notre Dame s terrific trio of scorers was speedster Caitlin McKinney. The sophomore gave Irish lacrosse fans a taste of what she could do as a freshman and improved on that in McKinney was third in scoring with 42 goals and 22 assists for 64 points and became the youngest player in the program s history to score 100 points when she reached the century mark in the 33rd game of her career. The team s third unanimous first team all-big EAST selection, the Lafayette Hill, Pa., native was a third team IWLCA, Inside Lacrosse and womenslacrosse.com All-America who ended the year ranked sixth all-time in goals, assists and points at Notre Dame. While the Irish got a majority of their scoring from the big three, one of the keys to Notre Dame success was the depth they displayed offensively as five other players had 10 or more goals on the season. Sophomore Heather Ferguson and junior Meghan Murphy followed Foote, Byers and McKinney on the score sheet as each turned in career-best years. Ferguson came into her own on attack as she scored 25 goals and added 11 assists for 36 points in the 19-game season. She finished the season on a 13- game point streak and scored five goals in three NCAA tournament games. Like the Irish team, Murphy had a bounce-back season in The junior returned to the lineup after suffering a serious knee injury in the third game of the 2005 season and became Notre Dame s top attack player off the bench, netting 14 goals with nine assists for 23 points, all career highs. A third team Academic All-American, Murphy proved to be a clutch scorer for the Irish with two game-winning goals, including one with 2.3 seconds left versus Syracuse in an win that wrapped up second place in the BIG EAST and an NCAA tournament bid. Midfielders Mary Carpenter, Kaki Orr and Jane Stoeckert also scored in double figures on the season. Carpenter became a starter at midfield and didn t disappoint with her performance. Besides scoring 12 goals and adding 10 assists for 22 points, the ochester, N.Y., native led the team with 51 ground balls, tied for third with 30 draw controls and was second with 23 caused turnovers. Carpenter was a second team all-big EAST and IWLCA West/Midwest region selection for her outstanding sophomore campaign. Orr also proved to be a force in the midfield for the Irish. The junior showed an offensive flair with 15 goals and six assists while grabbing 25 ground balls and finishing second on the team with 41 draw controls. Stoeckert was one of several key freshmen who made impacts in their first year with the Irish. She brought speed and outstanding lacrosse skills to the midfield and contributed 11 goals with nine assists for 20 points. Her 34 draw controls were third to Foote (44) and Orr and she also had 22 ground balls and 10 caused turnovers while starting 11 of 19 games. Sophomore Heather Ferguson had a break out year for the Irish as she finished fourth in scoring with 25 goals and 11 assists in While the Irish were able to put up big numbers offensively, they were also able to get the job done on the defensive side of the ball. Good goalkeeping wins games and Coyne had a pretty good one in three-year starter Carol Dixon. The fifth-year player was 15-4 on the year with a 9.98 goals-against average and a.492 save percentage in leading Notre Dame to the NCAA semifinals. Helping Dixon was a solid corps of defenders in front of her. Juniors Meaghan Fitzpatrick and Kristin Hopson teamed with sophomore Becky anck to form a formidable back line. They were supported by Kerry Van Shura, Shannon Burke, Katie Killeen and Alicia Billings who gave Notre Dame one of the top defensive units in the country. The trio of Fitzpatrick, Hopson and anck, along with Dixon combined for 148 ground balls and 72 caused turnovers for the season. Notre Dame got off to a fast start in 2006, putting the previous year behind them as quick as possible with a seven-game winning streak. The season-opening West coast trip to California (23-11) and Stanford (12-11 in 3ot) gave the Irish plenty of H 42 UNIVESITY OF NOTE DAME

3 momentum and introduced an offensive display that the program had never seen. Foote opened the year with a nine-goal, two assist game at California and Byers produced a pair of fivegoal games with a sudden-victory, game winner against the Cardinal. The Irish returned home for a four-game homestand that started with an 18-6 win over Ohio at the Loftus Center. Foote continued her great start with eight points (4g, 4a) in the win. No. 18 Cornell was next on the docket with Notre Dame holding on to take a victory. Foote, with her second consecutive eight-point game (5g, 3a) and McKinney (five points) led the Irish to victory with Dixon making 14 saves in goal. The Irish defeated Lehigh, 20-4, before taking a onegoal win (12-11) over No. 16 James Madison. Murphy turned in a four-point game (2g, 2a), including the game winner to improve Notre Dame to 6-0 on the year. Notre Dame took its show on the road to Wellington, Florida for the annual Spring Fling and opened the BIG EAST schedule against Loyola (Md.). McKinney (3g, 2a) and Byers (3g) led the Irish in a 13-9 victory. The Irish continued their spring break trip at Northwestern versus the top-ranked Wildcats and for a half, looked like they had an upset in the making, taking a 9-8 lead after 30 minutes. The second half was all Northwestern though, as the Cats out scored Notre Dame by a 13-3 margin on the way to a win. The loss left the Irish at 7-1. The Blue and Gold bounced back from the loss quickly, running off three straight wins versus Canisius (18-2), Connecticut (13-9) and Ohio State (13-6). On April 9, the Irish traveled to No. 4 Duke to battle the Blue Devils in Durham, N.C. Dixon turned in a career-best 22-save afternoon but it wasn t enough as Duke took an win in regulation. The Irish led 6-4 at halftime but couldn t hold the lead. Georgetown was next for Notre Dame in Washington, D.C., and again the Irish would come up one goal short in an sudden-death overtime loss. Foote had six points (2g, 4a) in the game with Byers and McKinney getting four points each. Coco Stanwick got the game winner for the Hoyas just 38 seconds into sudden death for the win. The Irish would play one more on the road before closing the season with a pair of home games. Notre Dame went to utgers and defeated the Scarlet Knights, 13-8, behind Foote s nine-point game (4g, 5a). Byers (3g, 2a) had five points in the win to give the Irish an 11-3 victory. Syracuse traveled to Notre Dame on April 29 to close out the BIG EAST schedule. An Irish win would lock up second place in the conference and sew up an NCAA tournament bid. This game would go right down to the wire with the Irish winning with 2.3 seconds left on the clock. Foote had five goals in the game but it was Heather Ferguson and Murphy who pulled out the big win with late-game heroics. Ferguson, who had a career-high three goals in the game, tied the score at with under five minutes left then set up Murphy s game winner off a free-position shot with 2.3 left on the clock to give the Irish a 12-3 overall record and a 4-1 BIG EAST mark. The regular season came to an end with another one-goal win, this time the Irish took a win against Vanderbilt. Byers took over the hero role in this one with a career-high six goals, including two in the final 1:47 to give Notre Dame the come-from-behind win. The Irish opened the NCAA tournament with a visit from Cornell and defeated the 10th-ranked Big ed, Foote and Byers led the way with four goals each while Dixon made 12 saves in goal. The 14-3 Irish would play host to Georgetown in the quarterfinals. In seven previous tries, Notre Dame had never beaten the Hoyas and for close to 48 minutes this one looked like Georgetown would make it eight straight as they had the lead. But the trio of Foote, McKinney and Byers had other ideas. McKinney got the game-tying goal off a Byers assist at 17:10 to make it 8-8. Carpenter scored a minute later to put the Irish ahead to stay and Foote added two more with Byers assists for an 11-8 Notre Dame lead. Georgetown cut the lead to 11-9 before McKinney (from Foote) closed the scoring for a 12-9 win to send Notre Dame to the NCAA finals for the first time in the program s history. Boston University s Nickerson Field was the site of the NCAA semifinals and the Irish would face Dartmouth in one game with Duke and Northwestern in the other. In front of 3,701 fans on a rainy evening in Boston, the Irish saw their season come to an end with a 14-8 loss to the Big Green. Dartmouth jumped out to a 4-0 lead and never looked back. McKinney and Foote (two goals) scored in the first half but the Irish trailed 6-3 after the first 30 minutes. Again Dartmouth scored the first three goals in the second half to build a 9-3 lead and the closest the Irish would get was five goals in the loss. Foote and McKinney each scored three goals in the game with Heather Ferguson getting two in the loss as the Irish ended with a 15-4 record and the finest season in the program s 10-year history.
