The ecumenical event included people of all ages in a musical celebration of the birth of Christ. Involving and promoting friendly relations between different religions is what Offi cial Paper of Calmar, Fort Atkinson, Ridgeway, Waucoma, Winneshiek County & Turkey Valley Community Schools this annual event is all about, explained committee member Annie Rude of Calmar. Preparing for the big event, Dale Hogenson s family and other friends of the barn Christmas event retrieved a 30 foot donated tree from Jim Bappe at the Holiday Pines Bappe farm by Decorah on a flat-bed wagon. Christmas in the Hogenson family barn, known as Chase the Adventure Lodge and Hunt Club originated in 2007 when the family invited the neighborhood country church, Springfield Lutheran, to join them in offering something to the community in the way of a musical and scriptural celebration. Local musicians played and all sang around the 25 foot Christmas tree. Since then the event has been so enjoyed by neighbors and friends that it has continued to a larger scale. By 2010 there was a committee of people who took an interest in working with the Hogenson family to plan this beautiful tradition. The 2014 event held recently once again filled the barn to capacity with young and old, as they sang, prayed, and celebrated the simple beginning of a Christmas in the Barn long ago. Committee member Ruth Skrukrud explains, I just wanted to share that on the first year when CHRISTMAS IN THE BARN to page 12 Itʼs a Miracle! The Greater Area Pantry decided to give each client a quilt for Christmas this year. The idea grew from one of the churches wanting to give the pantry 2 last Christmas. Board member Joanne Roney didn t know what to do with 2 quilts. Knowing these churches make mission quilts, she decided to ask for quilts for local missions. The hope was to get 80 quilts donated. The miracle is over 100 quilts have been donated from churches that sponsor the pantry and friends. The pantry served 80 clients for Christmas Dec. 20 th and were able to offer everyone a quilt choice. Fleece quilts and smaller tied quilts were made and donated along with birthday bags and some stuffed animals so the families were given a childs gift also. In addition NICC employees donated nine Fareway gift cards that were given to clients in a lucky draw and Mark Schmitt gave a financial donation for milk for the holidays. The miracle grew. It was a joyous day for clients and volunteers. Thank you to all who made this possible. The Greater Area Pantry has been blessed with many generous food drives and financial donations. He will not forget your work and the love you have shown Him as you have helped His people and continue to help them. Hebrews 6:10

Turkey Valley Winter Caring Tree The Turkey Valley students in grades 7-12 participated in a Winter Caring Tree this holiday season. Their goal was to collect hats and mittens to keep in each of the elementary classrooms as extras for kids that either do not have winter items or have forgotten them at home. Many generous donations were given to the school nurse to disperse. On behalf of the elementary, we would like to give a huge shout out to the high school staff and student body for keeping the real meaning of the season alive at Turkey Valley! Your thoughtfulness and generosity really does make a difference! 10 10 other news Try to Weed through the marijuana messages out there! By Carol Hopp, Community Prevention Specialist Society is always changing directions in terms of what s acceptable and what s not. We hear about the best ways to raise our children, the best plan to make healthcare affordable for everyone, and the best people to be in public office. Another hot topic is marijuana. Is it the best move to make it legal? Is it safe? Is it healthy? Is it medicine? How will it affect our children s future? These tough questions must be asked and answered before society decides what to believe. Recreational and some forms of medical marijuana that can be smoked or consumed in foods have health and safety risks that include: altered perceptions and mood, difficulty thinking and problem-solving, memory loss, impaired coordination, lung irritation and respiratory issues, increased heart rate, drugged driving, addiction, and in severe cases, hallucinations and paranoia. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), marijuana use has also been linked to mental health problems like depression and anxiety as well as psychosis, and a permanent loss of up to 8 IQ points by youth users. Like other drugs, the risk of becoming addicted is cause for concern. The risk of addiction increases from 9 to 17 percent for those using marijuana in their teen years compared to in adulthood. The American Lung Association tells us that marijuana smoke contains 33 cancer-causing chemicals and deposits four times as much tar into the lungs as a cigarette. Lastly, marijuana is not the same substance it was thirty plus year ago. NIDA also reports that tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the mind altering component in marijuana that makes people high, has increased from around 4 percent in the 1980s, to close to 15 percent. Research on consequences of marijuana use is still in the early stages, but with use on the rise, the long-term effects will become more evident. Some properties of the marijuana plant, including the cannabidiol (CBD), do have medical properties that have been approved by the FDA for purposes such as increasing appetite for patients undergoing cancer treatment or suffering from HIV, and reducing epileptic seizures. These pharmaceuticals are not smoked, and they have very limited amounts of THC. When answering the question Is marijuana medicine? ask yourself if your doctor or pharmacist has ever told you to smoke your medication. Marijuana is much more accessible today and we, as a community, need to be knowledgeable of its risks. In Iowa, marijuana is still an illegal substance, but as many already know, some states have legalized marijuana which means more and more of our community members have means to obtain it. Ask your legislators and your doctors about their stance on drug control policy. Be wary of where the information you are receiving comes from. Is it the marijuana retailers looking to make millions or medical professionals? Do your own research using sources like Healthfinder, National Institutes of Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or NIDA to find peer-reviewed journals and research-based information. The ERASE Substance Abuse Coalition tackles tough issues in our community. We aim to answer those difficult questions by increasing communities understanding of dangers associated with alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. You can get involved through a number of different avenues. Contact Carol Hopp by phone at or at chopp@helpingservices.org to learn more. All are welcome to join us at the next ERASE Substance Abuse meeting at the Decorah Area Chamber of Commerce on January 26 from 12 to 1 p.m. For 40 years, Helping Services for Northeast Iowa has been promoting the health and well-being of children and adults. We work to end domestic violence and child abuse; build healthy families, friendships, and relationships; and reinforce positive decision-making about alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use. Staff provide presentations, research-based programs, trainings, and advocacy to work with community members in creating safe, nurturing, and healthy environments. Story and Photos by Joyce Meyer This was the 10 th year for Holiday Lights Magical Nights Drive Thru Light Show at Pulpit Rock Campground in Decorah. The event benefits the Helping Services of Northeast Iowa. Since 2005, the popular Northeast Iowa light show has impressed visitors not only from Iowa, but states all around. The tunnels of lights are made possible by sponsors donating a memorial ring. The organization is thankful for over 250 volunteers who make this event happen every year. The donations received from this fund raiser help support their four main programs including domestic abuse resource center, family support, substance abuse prevention and youth mentoring. In our 10th year displaying Holiday Lights, we have reflected on why we put so much effort into bringing this event to northeast Iowa. The most obvious reason is the need to support our mission by raising funds that provide direct services to the families and ABOVE: The Gingerbread house was one of many beautiful displays. LEFT: Santa was also at the Holiday Lights and Cayden Keigan was excited to see him. BE- LOW LEFT: A favorite was driving through the tunnel of lights. BELOW: And to all a good night was also a part of the Holiday Lights Night. 10th Year of Holiday Lights Magical Nights children who seek our help. We have also wanted this event to be an extension of our mission by providing an opportunity for families to establish an annual tradition that is fun, healthy, and fitting with the season. Beyond this Holiday Lights highlights the services we offer and why, and provides direct education about the local issues we address. For several years, for instance, activity books have been given to visitors by Santa that promoted our sponsors and linked to an issue that impacts local children and adults that we serve. This year we created decks of playing cards that Santa is giving each family. Each card asks a question or challenges the person playing to engage friends and family members in learning about health, family relationships, and more, explains Helping Services for Northeast Iowa Executive Director David Runyon. Helping Services would like to thank all who volunteered and donated to the Holiday Lights program. They hope you make this a holiday tradition with your family. 12 12 other news CHRISTMAS IN THE BARN from front page Dale was not going to be in the area for Christmas he asked if I would see to it that Christmas at the barn would still happen. It was then I could see in his heart as his eyes welled with tears, that he shared that he wanted to have a place that all would have a place to be at Christmas and all would be welcome, if they had a family or not, church or no church. Somewhere that everyone would have a place to be and enjoyed. I said yes, without realizing the challenge, but I am so glad that I did. I approached Christian Life Center which became a huge part of the participants along with Springfield Lutheran church who teamed up to make it happen. My goal was to approach the variety of denominations so that there was not any one separate denomination but it was a celebration that brought them all together and welcomed everyone. It has been a blessing ever since and has grown every year. There was also a Living Nativity, sing-along and fellowship as the crowd remembered the simple beginnings of the real reason for the season. Amanda Maki and Abby Nelson, accompanied by Joe Helgeson, played Silent Night. Angel and Shepherd Choir sang Away in a Manger. Even the moose was decorated at Chase the Adventure. Ruth Moellers from Fort gave the opening prayer. Joe Helgeson from Ossian sang O Holy Night. TOP: Benjamin Unzeitig sounded the Shofar to begin the program. ABOVE: Danny, Saela, and Katie Steege sang Welcome Our World. Each sang a part solo and did an amazing job. RIGHT: Nativity scene above the crowd on the second fl oor loft.
