Friday was designated as twin/triplet day for students who wanted to dress up the same. Each year the school has a service project.

All the money collected will get donated toward Project Piece.

The theme this year was "Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service." The school kicked off the daily themed events with a crazy socks day and top 10 reasons they love CFS. Tuesday students had mismatch day and enjoyed an afternoon movie. Wednesday each class was assigned a color and were asked to wear as much of that color as possible. On Thursday students were asked to wear their ARK t-shirts as they took part in an all-school Mass at St. Wenceslaus in Spillville. Parents and grandparents were able to eat lunch with the students with activities in the afternoon. Friday was designated as twin/triplet day for students who wanted to dress up the same. Each year the school has a service project. This year was a progressive coin collection in which students brought pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters and dollars all throughout the week. All the money collected will get donated toward Project Piece. Most of the crops were still in the fields and leaves were just starting to change colors. Kaylie and her dad, Kurt, headed out that morning to the deer stand a favorite spot amongst the family that has been there about 20 years. The woods were so quiet that Kaylie recalls watching a squirrel jumping from limb to limb chattering, and eventually making its way over to Kurt and Kaylie sitting in the stand. All of a sudden the squirrel jumped on a limb a few feet in front of them and began scolding them. With the rustling of the leaves Kurt realized he and Kaylie must have dozed off. They were awoken by the sound of breaking sticks and the rustling of leaves. By the time Kurt nudged Kaylie to wake up and get ready to shoot, the buck was roughly 10 yards below the deer stand. At this time Kurt s heart began to race because he noticed the enormity of the rack this buck had. As Kaylie drew her gun, the buck simply looked up at them. Now Kurt was thinking the buck was going to bolt and the chance of a lifetime was going to slip through their fingers. 2 2 news Trails Unlimited Snowmobile Club will host Fun Run during Take a Friend Snowmobiling Week Iowa State Snowmobile Association (ISSA) is pleased to announce Take a Friend Snowmobiling Week happening Feb Trails Unlimited Snowmobile Club, which maintains trails in Southern Winneshiek County and Northern Fayette County, will host an organized ride on Sat., Feb. 8 to encourage non-snowmobilers to try out this winter activity. All are welcome on the Fun Run. Guests may register between 9-11 a.m. at the Zipper Bar and Grill located in Festina. Entry fee is $10 per person and includes several stops throughout the Trails Unlimited region. The event concludes at 7 p.m. with drawings and other prizes. All proceeds will benefit club expenses, but above all this event encourages public awareness of the sport. Snowmobiling is a total thrill ride and we honestly have the most beautiful, scenic trails in the state, said Bud Winter, Club President. Many people need just one ride; next thing you know they re shopping for a sled and joining a club. Trails Unlimited is a non-profit, volunteer organization that works year-round to improve the sport of snowmobiling in this dual-county region. The club has been in existence for more than 30 years and works in partnership with 240 landowners, nearly 100 club members and maintains over 125 miles of trails connecting the communities of Castalia, Ossian, Calmar, Fort Atkinson, Festina, Alpha, Hawkeye, Jackson Junction, St. Lucas, Auburn, Waucoma, West Union and Clermont. Our club works hard throughout the year maintaining the trails we have, building new trails, grant writing, hosting fundraisers, maintenancing the groomer, showing appreciation to landowners, assembling safety signage and encouraging more people to recognize and appreciate this sport. One club member in particular was recognized as the Lady Snowmobiler of the Year at the ISSA Convention on Nov. 23. Brenda Luzum of Festina is the Winneshiek County Convention and Visitors Bureau Director and also volunteers as the Trails Unlimited Club Secretary and Events Coordinator. Luzum was recognized for her extraordinary efforts in raising awareness and hosting successful events for the club and being a positive ambassador for the sport throughout Iowa. Brenda, among several other dedicated volunteers, is what makes our organization so successful, said Winter. We really do care about the sport and want others to love it as much as we do. Snowmobiling is not only a fun activity, but an economic driver as well. According to a recent Iowa State University economic impact study, Iowa snowmobilers spend $39.8 million dollars each year in Iowa State Snowmobiling Association recognized Brenda Luzum as Lady Snowmobiler of the Year at the ISSA Convention on Nov. 23. Luzum volunteers as the Trails Unlimited Club Secretary and Events Coordinator. She was recognized for her extraordinary efforts in raising awareness and hosting successful events for the club and being a positive ambassador for the sport throughout Iowa. As the buck walked into the clearing, roughly 15 yards to the other side of the stand, Kaylie calmly took her opportunity and shot. The deer dropped immediately. Both Kaylie and Kurt plopped down in the stand taking the next 15 minutes to get their composure back after realizing Kaylie bagged a trophy buck almost in her sleep. It was the first time she had shot a deer. Coming out of their daze, they jumped down to take a look. While dressing the deer, Kurt called the family for help to drag the deer to the vehicle. Since most of the crops were in the ground, it was going to make this task challenging. The family recalled how excited Kurt was when he called home roughly 3-4 times counting the points...each time he called the number kept getting larger. All of Kaylie s family members (brothers, grandma, uncles, aunts, cousins, etc.) had to come see the prize buck. They took pictures with the camera and phone and sent it out to their friends and family. Kaylie, at the young age of 11, had a hard time figuring out what the excitement was all about. People were trying to shake her hand and she became reluctant. People were congratulating her and she wasn t grasping what the big deal was.what Kaylie didn t realize was that most people wait a lifetime (some never get the opportunity) to shoot a deer with this big of a rack and here she did it on her very first try at a young age! They had a full head mount done for her by Heying Taxidermy in New Hampton. Heying loved having the mount hung in his shop for several months because it was good business and it was usually the topic of conversation. This past 2013 youth season, Kaylie and her dad headed out to the same deer stand on the second day of youth season in mid- September. They were sitting in the stand no more than 15 minutes when a buck came by. This time she was ready and had her gun drawn before the deer reached them. She waited until the deer got to the clearing 15 yards away (same spot as her 21 point buck), and took her shot. The deer dropped she had shot an 8 point buck this time. Kaylie said she enjoys hunting with her family. Alice and the late Glen Klimesh family have been hunting for generations and are all outdoor enthusiasts. Family members hunt everything from deer, turkey, coon and pheasant. They also all enjoy trapping and fishing. Hunting is a way of life for this family and all the kids usually start at a fairly young age. Everyone in the family (dad, brothers, uncles, etc.) play a hand in teaching these young kids to hunt and fish. Kaylie s father Kurt is also the head coach for the Turkey Valley Trap Shooting Team. When Kaylie becomes a freshman in high school she can join the trapshooting team and she s looking forward to it. What s on the horizon for this sure-shooter? She has bought herself a bow and has been practicing. Bow hunting can be a bit more challenging, however, she s up for a good challenge since she has made shotgun hunting look so easy! A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, February 4, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville, with the Rev. Donald Hawes officiating. Burial was in the St. Wenceslaus Cemetery, Spillville. The Balik Funeral Home of Spillville was in charge of arrangements. Box 341, Dumont, IA Ruth Ann Kovarik was born on April 8, 1966, the daughter of Alois and Marcella (Shimek) Kovarik in Decorah. Ruth was a special child and lived at Comp Systems in Charles City from She then attended Abner Hendrickson and Decorah High School, graduating in She worked with Spectrum Industries in Decorah until While in Decorah she lived at Opportunity Homes. In May of 2012, she moved to Dumont and lived at the Dumont Wellness Center, where she received loving and excellent care. She always enjoyed meeting new people and remembering birthdays. Ruth loved taking trips to Branson, Missouri and to Nashville, Tennessee, and loved country music, especially Conway Twitty. She was an avid baseball fan and went to Cubs, Twins, and Brewers games. Ruth enjoyed going out to eat, watching TV and old TV programs, attending mass at St. Benedict s on Saturday afternoon and loved keeping busy. Ruth is survived by her mother: Marcella Kovarik, Spillville; one brother: Tom (Diane) Kovarik, Grayslake, IL; one nephew, Louis Kovarik; one niece, Evelyn Kovarik; cousins: Mary Stika, Larry Kovarik, Wesley Kuboushek, and Leonard Kuboushek; and an uncle and aunt: Vic and Betty Shimek. 4 Knights of Columbus 11th Annual Catholic Schools Benefit Breakfast The Knights of Columbus, a group dedicated to helping children, are serving breakfast for the benefit of area Catholic schools.

They are a pretty good group of guys. They all know what to do. They just show up and it happens. Their wives tell me they can t cook, but when you get enough of them together, they do an amazing job.

4 4 Knights of Columbus 11th Annual Catholic Schools Benefit Breakfast The Knights of Columbus, a group dedicated to helping children, are serving breakfast for the benefit of area Catholic schools. The event will be held in Ossian on February 9 th at Columbus Hall, headquarters for the Ossian K.C. s. John Zweibahmer, Grand Knight for the Ossian K.C. s, was quick to divert credit for the ongoing success of the event. They are a pretty good group of guys. They all know what to do. They just show up and it happens. Their wives tell me they can t cook, but when you get enough of them together, they do an amazing job. The Boy Scouts pitch in with busing tables and refilling coffee. And of course, there are a couple of CDA s around to keep us in line. I d like to give a special thanks to Dr. Marty and Lee Hageman. They ve done a great job collecting the resources we need for the breakfast over the last several years. The breakfast will be at the Columbus Hall on the Main Street in Ossian, serving from 8:00am to 12:30pm. All are welcome. events Share the power of art with youth in your community! Northeast Iowa Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) is offering a new grant opportunity through the Northeast Iowa RC&D Employee Giving Fund. A Postville native and 2013 Luther College graduate, Scott explains his paintings are informed by the artwork of Agnes Martin, Robert Ryman, Sol LeWitt, and Marc Rothko.

Scott's paintings explore line, grid patterns, and achieving the presence of light while exploring monochromatic palletes.

5 events 5 First Friday at ArtHaus: New work by Robby Scott ArtHaus will host a First Friday event Friday, February 7, from 7-9pm, at ArtHaus (508 W. Water Street, Decorah). New paintings by artist, Robby Scott, will be featured in an exhibition entitled Welcome to the Show. The event is free and open to the public. A Postville native and 2013 Luther College graduate, Scott explains his paintings are informed by the artwork of Agnes Martin, Robert Ryman, Sol LeWitt, and Marc Rothko. "My work is about seeing, how imagery is perceived and experienced," says Scott. Scott's paintings explore line, grid patterns, and achieving the presence of light while exploring monochromatic palletes. After the opening event, Scott's artwork will remain on view through the months of February & March. Viewing hours are 10am-12pm Monday, Wednesday and Friday, or by special arrangement. Scott was the winner of the 2013 Emerging Artists Exhibition held each spring at ArtHaus, in which artists age 18-23, living within a 150 mile radius, are encouraged to submit their work to the juried competition. 6 6 opinion The 85 th General Assembly We are working to find solutions to the propane shortage that hit Iowa last week. It s troubling for thousands of Iowans, mostly in rural areas, who use propane to heat their homes. This week, I joined my colleagues in sponsoring a bill to provide $1 million in emergency funds to help low-income families who use propane keep the heat on this winter. The emergency funds would go to the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) and would be available in every county through local community action agencies. For neighbor to neighbor I have been surprised by the number of people who have mentioned that they have a problem with gluten. The proper name is celiac disease (gluten intolerance). Celiac disease is a digestive disorder that prevents your intestine from absorbing nutrients properly. That s because people with celiac disease cannot tolerate gluten, a protein commonly found in wheat and other grains such as rye and barley. Gluten gives bread its springy texture and is even used in products like pills and beauty treatments. 9 sports 9 Warriors spear Trojans on the court By Leah Kruse TV vs. SW BBB 1/31 For the second time this season, our two local rivals, Turkey Valley and South Winn, hit the court in Jackson Junction to find out who would win game two. Their first game, held in December in Calmar was a close game and came down to the last minutes of the fourth quarter with the Warriors winning Game two was much more lopsided than the first with SW controlling the court from the tip-off. The Warriors took a comfortable lead in the first three minutes of the first quarter with Adam Lensing and Trevor Schweinefus putting up four points each while SW s defense held TV to just one point from the free throw line by Ethan Throndson. Jacob Hackman added two free throws for TV but Garrett Bohach drained a trey for the Warriors followed by a free throw from T. Schweinefus and a bucket from A. Schweinefus dropped four points for the Warriors before the buzzer to end the first quarter Steven Landa put two points on the board for TV to start the second quarter but SW s Jordan Rommes put away two baskets for a split. Riley Busta and Ry. Busta added a bucket each for TV followed by two shots from the charity stripe from J. Izer to boost TV s score to 20 with 6:03 showing on the clock. The Trojans added two more points a minute later but failed to make another shot before the end of the quarter. Andre Walz made five points in the last half of the second quarter for the Warriors, Rommes added four more points for an eight point quarter and T. Schweinefus tacked on two buckets in the last 0:35 seconds s of the half to end the second quarter SW pulled many of their first string players to start the third quarter but still added 17 points to their total while TV made 12 points before the buzzer making the score with one quarter to go. J. Izer and Ri. Busta tacked on two shots each from behind the arc in the fourth frame helping TV score 17 points in the last quarter but the Warriors kept sinking shots to add 15 points to their total for a final tally of SW. Tonight, South Winn shot very well, stated TV Head Coach Chris Sullivan. South Winn did a nice job of moving the ball around and getting good looks. We tried to change our defense a few times but nothing could slow them down. If we are going to get back in the win- ning column we need to figure out a way to stop opposing teams. We have been giv- ing up way too many points in the last two weeks. Justin Izer led us in scoring with 14 points, Sullivan finished. (Photos by Leah Kruse) Warriors pin Clayton Ridge and Postville By Leah Kruse SW CR 1/30 South Winn traveled to Guttenberg last Thursday for their final duals meet on the road of the season. The Warriors took on Clayton Ridge first and racked up seven pins, which accounted for 42 of their total 51 points against the Eagles. SW earned the win with a final tally of CR won by forfeit three times, giving them 18 of their 24 points. I am very happy with the way our team came out and competed tonight. We were more aggressive than we have been and it showed up in the matches, stated Coach Elsbernd. This was a good meet for our young guys to get some confidence going into the conference tournament. In their second dual of the night, the Warriors squared off against the Postville Pirates and won by fall six times for 30 of their 48 points. SW picked up their second win of the night against Postville We talked to the team about going out and having some fun and I think they were able to do that tonight. Funds must be used on projects that will build the capacity of the farm to produce food long-term. Producers might use the funds for building or renovating facilities for growing, packing or storing local food, or to purchase equipment for production or processing of food. Projects related to the marketing or transportation of local foods will also be considered. Projects that will not be eligible for the grants include the purchase of seeds or transplants of annual crops, costs related to membership into farmers markets or coops, the purchase of inputs such as fertilizer, compost and feed, costs related to land clearing or seeding or wine making. Free Delivery To Farm & Home (563) Fax: (563) USDA s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is extending the deadline for new enrollments in the Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP) for fiscal year 2014, from Jan. 21 to Feb. 7. Producers interested in participating in the program can now submit applications to their local NRCS office. Extending the enrollment deadline will make it possible for more farmers and forest landowners to apply for this important conservation program, said Iowa NRCS State Conservationist Jay Mar. Through their conservation efforts, these good stewards are ensuring that their operations are more productive and sustainable over the long run. CSP is offered through a continuous signup, but NRCS periodically makes funding selections. Last year, Iowa NRCS obligated more than $3.8 million through 381 contracts covering 175,346 acres. The program emphasizes conservation performance producers earn higher payments for higher performance. Through CSP, producers install conservation enhancements to make positive changes in soil health, soil erosion, water quality, water quantity, air quality, plant resources, animal resources and energy. A CSP self-screening checklist is available to help producers determine if the program is suitable for their operation. The checklist highlights basic information about CSP eligibility requirements, stewardship threshold requirements and payment types. (Photo by Joyce A. Meyer) Cardinals sing a song of the promise of spring By Joyce Meyer Few bird sounds are as welcome as that of the cardinal as he sings the promise of spring. After this long cold winter, we are so ready for any hint of warmer weather. Warming our hearts, the sound of the Northern cardinals begins singing this month, one of the most welcoming sounds telling us that spring will be here before we know it. Northern cardinals, one of the most loved and recognized of all native birds, begin making their territorial song 'whatcheer cheer cheer' call in the month of February. Even though days remain cold, the sound is a welcome hope of spring as longer days arrive. Cardinals are non-migratory and range from southern Canada to the Gulf of Mexico and from the Great Plains to the Atlantic. Iowa is firmly in cardinal range. The birds can be spotted yearround but are most noticed when they visit winter feeders to enjoy sunflower seeds. Look for the male (red) feeding the female during courtship. The male feeds the first brood by himself while the female builds the second nest. According to my Birds of Iowa book their name comes from the latin word meaning important. The males become very territorial during the spring and even will fight their own reflection. At this writer s home, we have found them fighting their reflection in our gas grill and almost knocking themselves out. Unfortunately, of the three pairs that frequent out feeders, one male died of a broken neck presumably fighting with the grill. The birds are non-territorial in the winter and flock together. Their natural habitat is brushy areas and woody edges, making them perfectly suited to life in suburban neighborhoods. Male cardinals can't be missed, with red feathers, black faces, prominent crests and massive bills that enable them to crack open tough seeds. Females look similar but are buff brown with tinges of red on their crest and wings but they do have a dark mask around the eyes and a large red bill like the male. Young birds look like females but have a dark bill. Cardinals rarely call in early winter but make up for it as days lengthen. As if on cue, they begin singing in early February and usually keep at it until well into the growing season.
