The Leopards were seconds away from getting over the hump for a victory on Wednesday at American, but a foul and Eagle free throws with less than four seconds to play in overtime proved to be the difference. c Lafayette s current streak is not something the Leopards have been used to recently. Prior to the season when Lafayette lost 11 straight without Seth Hinrichs 15 due to injury, the Leopards had not lost more than five games in a row since the season and 10 since Fran O Hanlon s first year on College Hill in c Lafayette won its only overtime game of the season on Feb. 4, 2015, an win over Bucknell. However, overtime has been anything but kind to the Leopards this season, going to extra time five times and losing four of those contests. The lone win came against Saint Peter s in the second game of the year, Lafayette held the lead with less than two minutes remaining in regulation in all four of the losses and were ahead with less than 30 seconds to play in three of those games. Ratio 391/346 (1.13) LAST TIME OUT A tough stretch of games continued for Lafayette on Wednesday night in Washington, D.C., dropping a heartbreaker to American in overtime, The Leopards held leads of four and three inside the final five minutes of both the end of regulation and overtime, but American free throws on both occasions with less than 30 seconds to play tied it in regulation and won it in extra time. On the last possession, sophomore Matt Klinewski stopped the initial Delante Jones drive with a block out of bounds. However, with one second on the shot clock, Charlie Jones cut to the lane on the inbounds play and was fouled. The junior hit 1-of-2 and senior Zach Rufer s desperation shot sailed wide off the backboard to send the Leopards to another heartbreaking defeat. The game was close throughout as neither team was able to grow its lead higher than six points, featuring eight ties and eight lead changes. Lafayette committed just seven turnovers to 11 assists, but lost the rebounding battle, 39-27, and hit just five of its 21 three-point attempts (23.8%). Klinewski led the way offensively with 18 points on 6-of-8 from the free-throw line, while Rufer went 4-of-7 from distance and added six rebounds and three assists to his 14 points on the night. THE SKINNY ON THE HAWKS Despite coming out of the gates slowly with injuries overflowing into league play from nonconference contests, the preseason favorites in the Patriot League Preseason Poll are starting to look like just that. Lehigh has won six straight games entering Sunday s rivalry showdown and currently sits in a tie for second with Boston U., each one game behind league-leading Bucknell. Preseason Patriot League Player of the Year Tim Kempton leads five Hawks that average in double-figure scoring with 17.4 points per game, joined by Austin Price (13.5 ppg), Kahron Ross (11.1 ppg), Kyle Leufroy (10.3 ppg) and Jesse Chuku (10.1 ppg). Lehigh sits in the middle of the pack in most of the league s statistical rankings, but has excelled from beyond the arc, holding the top spot with a 39.4 percent mark from outside, and at the foul line, leading the conference in free-throw percentage at 72.8 percent. The Hawks also lead the conference in steals, averaging 6.9 takeaways per game. Last Meeting Lehigh 87, Lafayette 72 February 8, 2016 Easton, Pa. LAST MEETING In a game that featured 22 combined three s and both teams shooting comfortably over 50 percent from the field, Lehigh converted on 19 Lafayette turnovers to pull away late for the win in the first edition of the rivalry at Kirby Sports Center. Shooting efficiency was definitely not the downfall of the Maroon and White on Feb. 8 as the Leopards went 28-for-52 from the floor (53.8%) and 10-for-22 from the threepoint line (45.5%). Unfortunately, Lehigh matched that productivity, finishing at 32-of-56 from the field (57.1%) and 12-of-24 from distance (50.0%). Senior Bryce Scott shot his way out of a slump, going 5-of-9 from beyond the arc for 19 points to lead the Leopards offensively. Sophomore Matt Klinewski and junior Monty Boykins joined Scott in double-figures with 17 and 12, respectively, while junior Nick Lindner chipped in with three assists, moving him into the top-five on the Lafayette career assists list. Kempton was a force for the Hawks, finishing with a points-rebounds double-double of 22 and 13 on an efficient 9-of-10 from the field, including a three from the top of the key. Jesse Chuku added 18 points, and Kahron Ross and Austin Price posted 16 and 15, respectively. TRENDING Lafayette s current 10-game losing streak is not something the Leopards have been used to recently, just a year removed from a Patriot League championship run. Prior to the season when Lafayette lost 11 straight without Seth Hinrichs 15 due to injury, the Leopards had not lost more than five games in a row since the season. The last skid of more than 10 games prior to that season? , head coach Fran O Hanlon s first season on the sidelines in Easton. 3 Lindner Chosen for Preseason All-Patriot League Team BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Junior co-captain Nick Lindner of the Lafayette men s basketball team was selected to the Preseason All-Patriot League Team, it was announced at Patriot League Media Day in Bethlehem, Pa. on Oct. 22. Coming off the team s Patriot League championship run a year ago, the Patriot League s head coaches and sports information directors predicted Lafayette to finish sixth this season after losing its trio of 1,000-point scorers in Seth Hinrichs 15, Joey Ptasinski 15 and Dan Trist 15 to graduation. Lehigh and Bucknell were picked at the top of the table with 12 and eight first-place votes, respectively, while Boston U., Army West Point and American followed in front of the Leopards. Loyola, Holy Cross, Colgate and Navy rounded out the poll. We re the defending champions, but we ve lost a lot, head coach Fran O Hanlon said. Last year s team set the bar high and we re looking to build on that championship culture. Hopefully, we can use the past to help us with our attitude and approach to the game this season. As a sophomore, Lindner was in his best form when it mattered most during the Patriot League Tournament in March, averaging 23.5 points per game in three contests to earn Tournament MVP honors. The starting point guard for 31 games a year ago, he finished third on the team with 12.5 points per contest. An All-Patriot League Third-Team selection, he led the conference in free-throw percentage (85.0%) and assist/turnover ratio (2.6), and was second in assists with 5.2 helpers per game. The lone win came against Saint Peter s in the second game of the year, Lafayette held the lead with less than two minutes remaining in regulation in all four of the losses and were ahead with less than 30 seconds to play in three of those games. O Hanlon boasts a mark in his career after regulation time. TALE OF TWO HALVES At postgame press conferences, you often hear losing coaches say that they weren t able to put two good halves together. That s certainly been the case with this year s Leopards, who have had trouble backing up a good first half or digging out of a first-half hole. Lafayette s first and second half shooting percentages this season differ by more than 12.7 percentage points and that number increases to over 14.6 percentage points in Patriot League contests. Lafayette has shot more than 10 percent better or worse in one half over the other in all but 10 contests this winter. ALL-TIME SERIES Lafayette holds a edge in an all-time series with the Mountain Hawks that dates back to The Leopards have got the better of their rival recently, winners of five of the last eight contests. The two teams split the series a year ago, with each team winning on the other s home floor. LIVE BY IT, DIE BY IT Lafayette has become a three-point shooting program over the years, consistently in the top half of the league in the percentage of offense coming from beyond the arc. This year s Leopards get 33.7 percent of their points from beyond the arc and have made more three-point field goals than two-point field goals on two occasions this season, a win at Sacred Heart and the loss to Holy Cross on Feb NOT A GUARANTEE Lafayette has lost three games this season when scoring at least 80 points, the most since the campaign when the Leopards dropped four. A season ago, the Maroon and White were 10-1 when reaching the 80-point plateau. MOVING ON UP With two assists in Lafayette s loss to American on Wednesday, junior Nick Lindner moved his career assist number to 392, good enough for fourth on Lafayette s all-time list. Lindner entered the year in a tie for 15th all-time at Lafayette with 286 assists. Additionally, senior Bryce Scott sits in 17th with his total currently at 258. GREAT SCOTT! Senior Bryce Scott has been in and out of the top-10 in the country in three-point field-goal percentage this season, hitting three s at a 43.7-percent clip. Scott sits second in the league in that category and cooled off after a good three-game stretch, going 0-for-5 at American. Against, Lehig, Holy Cross and Navy, the senior went a combined 13-for-23 from distance. Interviews will be scheduled at times that do not conflict with the student-athletes class and practice schedules. Players will not be available on game day until after the game. Interview requests should be made through the Athletic Communications Office. MANNING THE BENCH Lafayette s Fran O Hanlon has posted 294 wins in his career in his 21st season on the sideline for the Leopards, while Lehigh s Brett Reed is in his ninth season, holding a career mark of MISSION ACCOMPLISHED With 15 points at Navy on Jan. 16, junior Nick Lindner reached 1,007 points for his career. Lindner joined senior Bryce Scott as the second player to score their 1,000th point for the Leopards this season as Scott accomplished the feat on Dec. 9 against Fairleigh Dickinson. The junior become the 43rd player in Lafayette history to eclipse the 1,000-point plateau. FOUR SCORE Lafayette has had its most success this season when four or more Leopards score in double-figures. The Leopards are 5-8 when four players get in on the offensive effort, but 0-13 when less than four manage to reach the 10-point mark. Lafayette has four guys that average in double-figures, with Nick Lindner leading the way at 13.8 points per game. Matt Klinewski Career Assists Player AST. Years 1. HALF AND HALF Lafayette is 0-15 when trailing at halftime this season and has lost its games by an average of 16.6 points per contest. A year ago, the Leopards were 4-13 when trailing at the half, but 15-0 with a halftime lead. Starts have proved extremely important this season for the Maroon and White, holding a 5-6 mark this season with a lead at the break. FAMILIAR FOES Lafayette has played 756 games against current Patriot League members, holding a overall record. In League play, Lafayette is in the regular season and in the Patriot League Tournament. Under Fran O Hanlon, the Leopards are in conference regular-season play. DOUBLES Sophomore Matt Klinewski recorded the first double-double of his young career on Dec. 9 in Kirby Sports Center, posting 15 points and securing 16 rebounds in defeat. Klinewski became the first Lafayette player to record more than 15 rebounds in a game since Jamaal Douglas ripped down 17 boards against Navy on Jan. 8, Freshman Paulius Zalys picked up his first career double-double on Jan. 2, ripping down 11 boards to go along with 10 points vs. Loyola and added his second on Feb. 6 with 14 points and 10 rebounds against Boston U. BOX OUT Lafayette has struggled on the glass this season, which is to be expected when losing the top two rebounders from a year ago in Dan Trist 15 and Seth Hinrichs 15. The Leopards are currently -7.5 in rebounding margin, but are used to overcoming difficulties on the glass, finishing last season ninth in the Patriot League in rebounding margin at -2.0 and still recording the team s first 20-win season since Lafayette has won or tied in the rebounding battle seven times this season against Penn (38-38), Colgate (44-28), Loyola (38-37), Army (41-34), Holy Cross (33-33), American (22-20) and Loyola (38-29). LITTLE OF EVERYTHING FROM LINDNER Junior co-captain Nick Lindner began the season on a tear with 49 points in his first two games. His ability to score when necessary always makes him a dangerous offensive threat, but being able to drop nine assists in a game, like he did at Cornell, is also an added bonus. Lindner leads the team in scoring at 13.8 points per game and sits fifth in the conference in assists with 4.1 per contest. SHOWTIME FOR MATTY K Sophomore forward Matt Klinewski has found his stride this season, scoring in double figures in all but five games. After averaging 3.1 points in nine minutes per contest as a freshman, the Voorhees, N.J. native is second on the team in scoring at 13.5 points per night and leads the way in rebounding with 5.2 boards per game. His 21 double-digit scoring performances are made even more impressive by the fact that he only accomplished that feat twice a year ago. PARTY OF FIVE It s no wonder the Leopards captured their fourth league crown last season with all five starters (Dan Trist, Seth Hinrichs, Joey Ptasinski, Bryce Scott and Nick Lindner) eventually reaching the 1,000-point mark. Scott earned his at home against Fairleigh Dickinson on Dec. 9, while Lindner reached the milestone on Jan. 16 at Navy. Career Three-Point Percentage BACKCOURT CAPTAINS Senior Bryce Scott and junior Nick Lindner take over the captaincy this season after the departure of Seth Hinrichs 15, who was the team s lone captain in Scott, an El Dorado Hills, Calif. native currently sits in seventh in the Lafayette record books for career three-point field goals (199), eighth for career free-throw percentage (83.0%) and seventh in career three-point field-goal percentage (40.5%). Additionally, Scott has appeared in all but five games during his three seasons in Easton. This season, Scott is averaging 12.5 points per contest on 59-of-135 shooting from beyond the arc (43.7%). Joining Scott to lead this year s squad is the reigning Patriot League Tournament MVP in Lindner. Lindner started 31 games a year ago at point guard and finished third on the team in scoring with 12.5 points per contest. A selection to the All-Patriot League Third Team and a Preseason All-Patriot League selection entering , he has been solid this season, picking up Patriot League Player of the Week honors on Nov. 16 after a pair of 27 and 22-point performances in a split week for the Maroon and White. His 162 assists a year ago are good enough for a tie for third in school history, while he currently sits in 14th in career free-throw percentage (80.0%) and fourth in career assists (392). Brian Burke Jamaal Hilliard Jim Mower Andrew Brown Brian Ehlers Bob Falconiero Tracy Tripucka Bryce Scott Dave Brown Justin DeBerry Seth Hinrichs Jared Mintz Preston Denby Nick Lindner Matt Roberts Jay Mottola Frank DiLeo Keith Brazzo Ryan Willen Billy Hughes finished first in the Patriot League and fifth in the nation in three-point shooting percentage. Additionally, the Leopards were one of just 10 teams in the country to shoot above 40 percent from beyond the arc. This season, things have dropped off a bit as the Leopards are fifth in the league in outside shooting percentage at 36.2 percent. The Leopards have had their moments, including a 16-for-24 outside-shooting clinic at Sacred Heart, and hitting 8-of-15 (53.3%) and 8-of-16 (50.0%) in losses to American and Bucknell. FRONTCOURT DEPTH Returning seniors Ben Freeland and Nathaniel Musters, and newcomers Tyler Barlow and Paulius Zalys have been tasked with joining sophomore Matt Klinewski on the frontcourt this season, with each providing different benefits when on the floor. Musters has gotten the nod to start in 16 of 26 games, while Freeland has contributed 4.1 rebounds per game in Patriot League action and earned his 10th start of the year on Wednesday. Zalys is averaging 22.8 minutes per game and has grown since entering Patriot League play, averaging 8.0 points and 4.3 rebounds per league contest. Barlow, who has played in 20 games, had his best game of the season at La Salle, sending back two Explorer shots to go along with four points and six rebounds in 12 minutes of action. CLUTCH FROM THE STRIPE A staple of O Hanlon s teams through the years, Lafayette is once again a solid free-throw shooting team in , dropping in 329-of-467 shots from the line, a 70.4 percent clip. That mark is good enough for the sixth spot in the league rankings. O HANLON IN 21st SEASON ON COLLEGE HILL The all-time winningest coach in Lafayette and Patriot League history and longest-tenured coach in the conference, Fran O Hanlon is in his 21st season as the 1,000 Point Scorers Leopards head coach. A three-time Patriot League Coach of the Year, O Hanlon has thrice led Lafayette s program to the NCAA Tournament and lays claim to four Patriot League titles. VETERAN-ROOKIE MIX ON THE SIDELINES O Hanlon s sideline features some familiar faces as well as newcomers this winter. Pat Doherty returns for his seventh season and first as the program s Associate Head Coach, while Matt Blue returns for his first season after five years as an assistant at Hartford. Blue served under O Hanlon with the Maroon and White during the campaign. Additionally, Jimmy Fenerty comes to College Hill after two seasons as a graduate assistant manager at Temple and Conor Dow takes over as Director of Basketball Operations in his first year. AT HOME ON COLLEGE HILL Head coach Fran O Hanlon is one of only seven head coaches to direct the same Division I program since the start of the season. O Hanlon is joined on the list by Jim Boeheim (Syracuse), Mike Krzyzewski (Duke), Bob McKillop (Davidson), Dave Loos (Austin Peay), Tom Izzo (Michigan State) and Phil Martelli (Saint Joseph s). MORE ON COACH O Head coach Fran O Hanlon is the Patriot League s all-time winningest coach with 294 career wins. In addition to owning the all-time wins record, O Hanlon holds the overall (623) and league (293) games coached marks. With the win over Holy Cross on Feb. 19, 2014, O Hanlon set the all-time conference wins mark of 127 and passed former Bucknell head coach Pat Flannery. Coach O currently sits at 139 Patriot League victories. MAKE MORE THAN YOU MISS Offensive efficiency was a key to the Leopards success last season as Lafayette shot better than 40 percent from the field in 29 of its 32 games. The Maroon and White were above 50 percent in 15 of those contests. This season, the Leopards have been over 40 percent in 19 of their 26 games and shot better than 50 percent four times, including a 60-percent effort in the win at Sacred Heart (27-of-45). PLAYING THE MATCHUPS Head coach Fran O Hanlon has been known to run players in and out at stoppages of play, much to the chagrin of official statisticians and public address announcers. Look for the Leopards to sub early and often, while going as many as eight or nine players deep on the bench this season. Coach O had eight or more players tally 10-plus minutes in 16 of the team s 33 games this season. The Leopards have had eight players tally 10-plus minutes in 21 of 26 contests this season. ABOUT LAFAYETTE COLLEGE Lafayette is a top liberal arts college with 2,400 students and 215 full-time faculty that offers a wide variety of undergraduate degree programs including engineering. With close proximity to New York City and Philadelphia, Lafayette has one of the highest endowment per-student rates in the nation. This means ample resources to fuel student research, and provide opportunities to study abroad, internships and field work. It means outstanding facilities, Division I sports, and funding for 250 student groups on one of the most beautiful campuses in the country. A national leader in graduation rates, undergraduate research, and graduate and mid-career salaries, Lafayette offers the benefits of larger schools with the student-centered approach of a small, undergraduate college. FRESH FACES Five newcomers to the Lafayette program have given the Leopards a different feel this season. Tyler Barlow, a 6-8, 192-pound forward, travels to Easton from Corpus Christi, Texas where he was a two-year letterwinner in basketball after transferring from Great Oak High School in San Diego, Calif. after his sophomore season. During his senior campaign, he averaged 16.5 points and 13.8 rebounds per contest. Barlow s squad went undefeated on its way to a district championship last winter and was regional semifinalists each of his last two seasons. Barlow is one of the few rim-protectors the Leopards have on the defensive end and is looked at to provide defense and rebounding during his time on the floor. Coming to College Hill from North Little Rock, Ark., Sam Dunkum, a 6-10, 215-pound center completed his second year of varsity basketball at North Little Rock High School after transferring from Little Rock Christian Academy after his sophomore season. During his junior year, he averaged six points, six rebounds and four blocks per contest to help his team to conference and state championships. Dunkum is currently recovering from a knee injury and will miss the remainder of his freshman campaign. Auston Evans, hailing from McKinney, Texas, is a 6-6, 186-pound wing with the ability to stretch the floor and score from multiple positions. A four-year varsity player at the Greenhill School in Addison, Texas, Evans averaged in double figures in scoring each of his four seasons. He eclipsed the 1,000-point plateau during his junior season, averaging 16.5 points per game that year. Evans is a three-time All- Southwest Preparatory Conference honoree and earned Team MVP laurels his sophomore and junior seasons.
