2 A GRAND PERFORMANCE: Tyson Whitfield became the 33rd player in Lafayette men s basketball history to reach the 1,000-point plateau. Whitfield moved past the grand mark with 20 points vs. Yale on Dec. 30 in the Golden Bear Classic consolation game. He currently has 1,043 career points, following a 24-point effort vs. Lehigh when he moved into 29th spot all time. He needs 16 points to move into 27th place alltime, a spot currently occupied by Jim Radcliff 57. At his current scoring pace, Whitfield is on track to score 1,278 points in his career and could move up as high as 12th place on Lafayette s all-time scoring list Upon reaching 1,000 points, Whitfield became the third player in the last three seasons to score a grand graduates Brian Ehlers and Stefan Ciosici passed the mark in and , respectively. MUSIC MEN: Lafayette most likely has one of the most musically-talented teams in the country. Junior guard Drew Dawson s talents extend beyond the classroom and the hardwood. The Camp Hill, Pa. native provided some soothing tunes on the Leopards lengthy trip to California. On the bus after a practice, Dawson breathed life into his harmonica and later showed off his piano-playing talents at the hotel restaurant with a post-dinner performance. Dawson also played the cello in his youth. Freshman forward Mike Farrell is a pianist with classical training. Freshman guard Winston Davis was an accomplished drummer in high school. The Lafayette coaching staff is not without musical talents, as Head Coach Fran O Hanlon plays the piano and banjo and assistant coach Pat Brogan plays the piano. No word yet if Ben Saxton has ever hosited a saxophone. MAD BOMBER SETS ANOTHER THREE-POINT RECORD: With eight three-pointers vs. La Salle on Dec. 29, Tyson Whitfield earned a share of the Lafayette school record for three-pointers in a game. He tied Larry Spigner s 93 record performance vs. Yale on Dec. 3, 1991.With 19 attempts vs. La Salle, Whitfield also set a new record for three-point tries. Whitfield holds two single-season records for three-point field goals made (91) and three-point field goals attempted (213) which he set in He is also the career three-point leader at Lafayette with 234 trifectas. THE COACH: Head Coach Fran O Hanlon (Villanova 70) is in his sixth season on College Hill. The and Patriot League Coach of the Year, O Hanlon has restored Lafayette to a championship level. O Hanlon has guided the Leopards to consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, three straight Patriot League regularseason championships and two Patriot League Tournament titles. Following a pair of 20-win seasons that included a school record 24 wins last season, O Hanlon s career record stands at THE LAST AMATEURS STEADY ON BESTSELLER LIST: John Feinstein s The Last Amateurs, a book chronicling the Patriot League men s basketball season, has spent five weeks on the New York Times Bestseller list. The book topped out at No. 14 for the week of Dec. 17. The Last Amateurs was also picked by USA Today as one of the top 100 books of Feinstein has made two appearances on campus for book signings. THE ALL-TIME SERIES: This game marks the 125th meeting between Lafayette and Bucknell. Lafayette leads the all-time series 79-45, and has won the last six meetings. The last Bucknell win was a decision on Jan. 14, The Leopards won both meetings between the schools in and all three meetings in The first series meeting came on Jan. 26, 1915, a Bucknell win. SCOUTING REPORT BUCKNELL: The Bison enter the game at 7-7. Their last game was an loss at Navy on Wednesday. Bryan Bailey leads the team and is third in the Patriot League in scoring with 16.6 points per game. Bailey scored 20 at Navy. Boakai Lalugba is second on the team in scoring (15.1 ppg) and leads the team in rebounding with 7.6 rebounds per outing. The Bison have been without the services of Jake Ramage who underwent knee surgery in early December, an injury to the same knee that forced him to miss the season. He has been cleared to play today. Bucknell is coached by Pat Flannery, a 1980 graduate of Bucknell. He is in his seventh season and has a record as the Bucknell coach. SERIES MEETINGS BREAKDOWN Total: (124) Home: (62) Away: (56) Neutral: 2-4 (6) LAST BOX SCORE LAFAYETTE 74, BUCKNELL FEB. 27, 2000 DAVIS GYM LEWISBURG, Pa. Lafayette captured its third straight regular season title with a road win over Bucknell. In the beginning of the first half, the teams battled back-and-forth, with neither team holding a lead of more than a bucket. That changed when Brian Burke hit a three at 6:31 to give the Leopards a lead. Lafayette seized the momentum, rattling off a 17-5 run to close with a lead. Brian Ehlers hit for six of his 11 first half points, and Tyson Whitfield five of his 10 opening stanza points to give Lafayette the 16 point bulge heading to the locker room. The Leopards shot 46 percent from the floor in the first half compared to Bucknell s 30 percent. It was a 20-point margin for much of the second half with Lafayette in control, but as they did in the season s first meeting, the Bison initiated a late rally to cut Lafayette s lead to at 1:22 on a three-pointer by Valter Karavanic. Lafayette regained its composure and sank six free throws in the final minute to seal the win. Whitfield led the way for the Leopards, scoring 17 points, and Ehlers hit for 14, followed by Tim Bieg s 13 points. Bucknell was led by Karavanic s 11 points. 3 INJURY UPDATE: Junior guard Brian Burke is out indefinitely while recovering from a punctured lung he sustained at Fordham on Dec. 11. He is slowly regaining his strength at his home in Philadelphia. He is expected to try to return to school when the new semester starts, but will not rejoin the team until a later date. Freshman Winston Davis is day to day following a foot injury suffered in practice. Freshman Paul Rorvig, the all-time leading three-point shooter in the state of Missouri, has a bone bruise on his right ankle, but could return to action soon, pending results of a recent MRI. Greg McCleary is out indefinitely while he recovers from off-season knee surgery An integral part of the Lafayette basketball family is missing today s game. WEST s playby-play man Dick Hammer is out with a bruised rib. He is listed as probable for Navy. SETTING THE PACE: Lafayette is currently leading the Patriot League in several statistical categories including scoring (75.8 ppg), field goal percentage (43.8%), free throw percentage (76.4%), assists (17.0 apg), turnover margin (+2.46), assist/turnover ratio (1.19) and three-point field goals made (8.69). LAFAYETTE VS. THE PATRIOT LEAGUE: Lafayette has played 485 games against the six members of the Patriot League, and has a record in all games against them. In Patriot League play, Lafayette is in the regular-season and 8-8 in the Patriot League Tournament. Under Fran O Hanlon, the Leopards are in the Patriot League, and 31-6 over the past four seasons. Lafayette went 10-2 in both and with the Leopards losses coming to Bucknell and Navy in and two losses to Colgate in Lafayette was 11-1 in , its only loss to Navy. This season, Lafayette is 0-1 in Patriot League play. Army Colgate Lehigh Bucknell Holy Cross Navy PRESEASON POLLS: Despite winning back-to-back-to-back Patriot League regular-season titles and returning three starters from last year s squad, Lafayette has been picked by all of the major trade publications to finish second to Navy in the Patriot League race. The same is true of the Patriot League s own Preseason Poll, where coaches, SIDs and media members picked Navy ahead of Lafayette. Preseason Poll 1. Navy (14) 2. Lafayette (6) 3. Holy Cross 4. Colgate (1) 5. Bucknell 6. Lehigh 7. Army RECORD-BREAKING TEAM EFFORT: Lafayette hit a school-record 18 threepointers at Fordham (Dec. 11) to set a new single-game record for three-pointers. Tyson Whitfield connected for six trifectas while Brian Burke added five and Reggie Guy three The mark is the second most in the nation this season, second only to Northern Arizona s 20 long-range bombs vs. Cal Poly on Dec. 2. RAISING THE BARR: Frank Barr has picked up a large portion of the scoring slack left by graduation. Barr has already set new career highs in points (24) and rebounds (15). Thus far, Barr is averaging 12.9 points and 6.2 rebounds per game, compared to 6.2 points and 3.9 rebounds per game in the season. He is averaging 8.7 more minutes per game this season (23.3) than last season (14.6). Barr has already been named Patriot League Player of the Week twice this season. TAKING CARE OF THE BALL: Lafayette has continued to display what has become a trademark of Fran O Hanlon s basketball teams taking care of the basketball. Lafayette has turned over the ball 186 times compared to its opponents 218 turnovers. Through 13 games, Lafayette has posted single digits in turnovers four times, giving away a season-low seven at Cornell and turning it over just nine times vs. Columbia, at Rider and vs. Princeton. Perhaps more impressive is Lafayette s 1.2 assist-to-turnover ratio (221/186) compared to its opponents 0.9 (198/218). LAST GAME LEHIGH 90, LAFAYETTE 80 JAN. 10, 2001 KIRBY SPORTS CENTER 13 EASTON, Pa. The Mountain Hawks led with 1:51 remaining before the break but a lay-up and a three-point basket by Lafayette freshman Ben Saxton over the next 45 seconds gave the Leopards a lead that was cut to before the half. The Leopards jumped out on an 8-0 run to start the second half but Lehigh chipped at the deficit and took the lead for good at on a foul shot by Bobby Mbom. Lehigh went up by as many as 14 in the second half and outrebounded the Leopards in the contest. Tyson Whitfield led Lafayette with 24 points. 6 WHERE OLD, USEFUL NOTES GO TO DIE TYSON WHITFIELD PLAYER OF THE WEEK (Jan. 3): Senior co-captain Tyson Whitfield was named the Patriot League Player of the Week for the week ending Dec. Jan 2. The conference player of the week honor is the second for Whitfield in his career. Whitfield averaged 25 points and five rebounds, and was named to the all-tournament team in leading the Leopards to a 1-1 record at the Golden Bear Classic in Berkeley, Calif. He started with a career-high 30-point performance, including a school-record eight three-pointers, in an overtime loss vs. LaSalle, then followed with 20 points and six boards in a win over Yale. Whitfield s 17th point against Yale, which came on the first of two free throws late in the second half, made him the 33rd player in Lafayette basketball history to reach the 1,000-point plateau for his career. 2001: A SAN FRANCISCO ODYSSEY (Jan 4.): What began as a five-day trip to Berkeley, Calif. for the Golden Bear Classic turned into an extended road odyssey. Five day road trip -- eight days. Lafayette left for its tournament at the Univ. of California on Dec. 27 and was scheduled to return to Easton on Dec. 31. However, because of the winter storm that hit the Northeast and altered travel plans for thousands, Lafayette was forced to stay in San Francisco until Jan. 2 when the first Continental flight was available for the travel party of 22. Lafayette made the 3,000 mile journey to Newark International Airport on Jan. 2 and a bus took the team directly to Poughkeepsie where the team arrived at the hotel at 3 p.m. The lengthy trip ended at 12:30 p.m. when the team arrived at Kirby Sports Center following the Marist game. a performance from the field vs. Columbia. Barr, who also finished with seven rebounds, was an integral part of a decisive 22-0 second half run. The Patriot League s leading shot blocker, Barr was up to the challenge versus a tough, athletic Rider team. He posted his first double-double of the season with 19 points and 11 rebounds in a close road loss. FRANK BARR PLAYER OF WEEK (Nov. 19): Lafayette senior Frank Barr was named the Patriot League Player of the Week. Barr wasted no time making a statement about the level of his play in the middle for the Leopards in The 7-0 center scored a career-high 16 points to lead all Lafayette scorers in a win at Cornell on Nov. 18 in the Leopards season opener. Barr showed his shooting touch down the stretch, scoring five points in a 12-0 run that broke a tie and essentially sealed the game for Lafayette. Barr also went 6-for-7 from the line. Equally impressive was his defensive play. Barr used his 7-2 wing span to block six Cornell shots while also pulling down six rebounds. BRIAN BURKE PLAYER OF WEEK (DEC. 18): Brian Burke (Philadelphia, Pa.) was named the Patriot League Player of the Week on Dec. 18. The honor was the first ever for the Leopards sixth man. Burke scored a career-high 24 points to lead Lafayette vs. Fordham on Dec. 11. The game was the Leopards only contest of the week due to finals, and pitted them vs. a 6-1 Rams squad that was fresh off a win over then nationally-ranked St. John s. Burke hit five three-pointers and went 8-for-11 (73 percent) from the field on the night. He also dished out four assists and added four rebounds in a solid all-around effort. TAKING THEM FOR THE TEAM (Dec. 6): Lafayette put on a free throw shooting exhibition vs. Princeton. The Leopards made 25 of 26 free throws, the lone miss by Frank Barr trying to complete a three-point play after a dunk. The Leopards hit in the final 3:32 to seal the game. For the season, Lafayette is shooting 76 percent from the line. FRANK BARR PLAYER OF THE WEEK (Dec. 4): Frank Barr was named the Patriot League Player of the Week for the week ending Dec. 4. The honor is the second Player of the Week nod for Barr this season, as he was also named Player of the Week on Nov. 19. Barr led Lafayette to a 2-1 week with wins over Columbia and Albright. He dropped in a career-high 22 points on

7 PRESEASON NOTES BURIAL GROUND TAKING A CLOSER LOOK AT THE CUPBOARD : Some may have erroneously alluded to Lafayette s proverbial cupboard being bare following the graduation of seniors Stefan Ciosici and Brian Ehlers. Since then, he has steadily built the Leopards into a championship program ; ; ; ; A THREE-PEAT?: Repeating as Patriot League champions in and advancing to the NCAA Tournament was not an easy proposition for Lafayette, but the Leopards became the first team to accomplish the feat since Colgate in and No Patriot League team has ever gone to the NCAA Tournament in three-straight seasons.
