1 For Immediate Release November 20, 2000 Contact: Phil LaBella THE STORYLINE: Lafayette is coming off its third straight season-opening win, this time posting a victory over Cornell on Saturday in Ithaca, N.Y. The Leopards will look to parlay that momentum into tonight s contest at Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights come into the game with a 1-0 record, having won a close battle (64-61) over Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday. BARR TABBED AS PLAYER OF WEEK: Lafayette senior Frank Barr has been named the Patriot League Player of the Week. Barr wasted no time making a statement about the level of his play in the middle for the Leopards in The 7-0 center scored a career-high 16 points to lead all Lafayette scorers in a win at Cornell on Saturday in the Leopards season opener. Barr showed his shooting touch down the stretch, scoring five points in a 12-0 run that broke a tie and essentially sealed the game for Lafayette. Barr also went 6-for-7 from the line. Equally impressive was his defensive play. Barr used his 7-2 wing span to to block six Cornell shots while also pulling down six rebounds. A LITTLE ASSISTANCE: Junior Brian Burke did his share of passing in its season opening win over Cornell. The shooting guard dished out a careerhigh 11 assists, shattering his previous record by six. Only one other Lafayette player was credited with an assist in the game (Tim Bieg). Burke s mark will most likely rank him at or near the top in the NCAA s single-game highs thus far in the season. It was the first time since Jan. 24, 1996, that a Lafayette player (Craig Kowalda) passed for 10 or more assists. TAKING CARE OF THE BALL: Lafayette turned the ball over just seven times in the Leopards season opener at Cornell. The mark easily surpassed Lafayette s season low of 11, which Lafayette managed vs. Towson, Alabama State, Georgia Tech and Lehigh. ON THE RADIO: Tonight s game can be heard live on WEST-AM Stereo 1400, the 65th year of broadcasting Lafayette Athletics. Dick Hammer enters his 34th year of calling the play-by-play for Lafayette men s basketball. POSSIBLE STARTERS Ht. Wt. Cl. 3 PRESEASON POLLS: Despite winning back-to-back-toback Patriot League regular-season titles and returning three starters from last year s squad, Lafayette has been picked by all of the major trade publications to finish second to Navy in the Patriot League race. The same is true of the Patriot League s own Preseason Poll, where coaches, SIDs and media members picked Navy ahead of Lafayette. Preseason Poll 1. Navy (14) 2. Lafayette (6) 3. Holy Cross 4. Colgate (1) 5. Bucknell 6. Lehigh 7. Army (First-place votes) ALL-TIME AT LAFAYETTE: In the 90 seasons of men s basketball at Lafayette College, the Leopards hold an overall record of (.539) that spans all the way back to the first season in The Leopards hold a mark in the Patriot League and a 8-8 clip in the Patriot League Tournament for a combined record. RECENT PATRIOT LEAGUE DOMINANCE: Lafayette has found itself atop the Patriot League standings the last three seasons. Under Fran O Hanlon, the Leopards are in the Patriot League, and 31-5 over the past three seasons. Lafayette went 10-2 in and and 11-1 in A THREE-PEAT?: Repeating as Patriot League champions in and advancing to the NCAA Tournament was not an easy proposition for Lafayette, but the Leopards became the first team to accomplish the feat since Colgate in and No Patriot League team has ever gone to the NCAA Tournament in threestraight seasons. The Leopards have won three straight Patriot League regular-season titles, but lost to Navy in the conference tournament championship game in following a 19-9 season. TAKING A CLOSER LOOK AT THE CUPBOARD : Some may have erroneously alluded to Lafayette s proverbial cupboard being bare following the graduation of seniors Stefan Ciosici and Brian Ehlers. A closer look reveals that three starters return for Lafayette in Patriot League Rookie of the Year Tyson Whitfield, underrated three-year starting point Tim Bieg and junior forward Rob Worthington. Seven-footer Frank Barr will move into the center spot, a starting position he occupied for much of the season. CUTTING THE RIBBON: Kirby Field House, the Leopards home since 1973, was dedicated as the new Allan P. Kirby Sports Center in June. The 27-year old structure underwent $2.5 million in renovations and received a tremendous facelift. It also saw the addition of a $24 million, 110,000 square-foot intramural and recreational sports facility. BOMBS AWAY: It s safe to say that three-point shooting has been an integral part of Lafayette s offense since Fran O Hanlon took over. The past three seasons, Lafayette squads have set team single-season records for three-pointers. Lafayette hit 238 three s in to break the mark of 207 which broke the mark of 187 which broke the record of 147. The Leopards hit a record 249 three s in O CAPTAINS MY CAPTAINS: Seniors Tim Bieg and Tyson Whitfield will serve as the team captains for the season. Bieg and Whitfield were elected to the leadership role in a vote by the players. Bieg has been a captain of the offense for three seasons, running the team from the point guard position. He and Whitfield will be looked to for major offensive and defensive contributions in addition to their leadership duties. YOUR ATTENDANCE PLEASE: Lafayette fans have led the Patriot League in home and overall attendance the last three seasons. In , Lafayette averaged 2,474 fans at home and 4,070 in all games. An average of 2,525 watched home games in and 3,196 for all games. The biggest game of the season saw over 4,021 people jam into the 3,500-seat Kirby Sports Center to witness an win over Navy in the Patriot League Tournament championship game on March 10. Lafayette has hosted the Patriot League Final the last two seasons. PROJECTING A GRAND: Tyson Whitfield, who currently has 857 career points, should become the 33rd player in Lafayette men s basketball history to score 1,000 points. Whitfield needs just 143 points to reach the plateau that Brian Ehlers reached in and Stefan Ciosici passed in If Whitfield averages 15 points per game he would hit 1,000 career points in the final round of the Golden Bear Classic on Dec. 30. If he averages 10 points per game, he would hit a grand vs. Penn on Jan. 20. The only thing slowing his grand quest is an ankle injury that forced him to miss the season-opener. WEEKLY RADIO SHOW: Lafayette Sports Weekly, a comprehensive halfhour radio show will air live each Thursday at 7:00 p.m. from September through March on the Lafayette Sports Network s flagship radio station, WEST AM 1400 and on the world wide web at WEST-AM s Jack Logic will be joined each week by either Gary Laubach or John Leone, Lafayette Sports Network s television commentators, for an exciting half-hour devoted exclusively to Lafayette sports. Head coach Fran O Hanlon will be a featured guest during the basketball season.
