1 Lafayette For Immediate Release February 19, 2000 WHO S HOT?: The final answer is: Lafayette s free throw shooters. The Leopards have posted BACK to BACK to BACK free throw performances over 90 percent. In their last outing, Lafayette was (94%) for its best effort of the season. At Stony Brook, LC shot 91% (10-11). That game followed a stint vs. Holy Cross (91%). Lafayette is shooting 92 percent over its last three games Contact: Phil LaBella THE STORY LINE: The Leopards made the short trip down I-78 tonight to face Lehigh in the Leopards 10th of 12 conference games. Lafayette is seeking its fourth straight win overall and third consecutive Patriot League victory. The Leopards have won seven straight over their cross-valley rival, including a 19-point triumph in the first matchup this season on Jan. 26. Under Fran O Hanlon, the Leopards are 8-1 vs. Lehigh with the only loss a threepoint decision (70-67) at Lehigh on Feb. 17, STREAK: The Leopards seven straight wins over Lehigh match their longest winning streak against any of this season s Patriot League opponents. Lafayette has already notched two wins each over Holy Cross and Army to run those winning streaks to seven. Lafayette s longest winning streak against a non-league Division I opponent comes against Columbia, whom Lafayette has beaten 10 straight. LAST TIME OUT: The Lafayette defense was the story in a win over Army on Wednesday. Lafayette held Army to a season-low 14 points in the first half and limited the Cadets to just 22 percent from the field. The Lafayette pressure forced 27 turnovers while allowing just four assists in the entire game. Leading the offense for Lafayette was Brian Ehlers who scored 12 points and dished out three assists while playing just 27 minutes. Tim Bieg and Stefan Ciosici each added 10 points. The Leopards posted their third straight game above 90 percent from the free throw line, shooting for a 94 percent clip. LIFE OF BRIAN(S): SOLID AT THE LINE: The Hack A Shaq approach doesn t work well when it comes to playing Lafayette. The Leopards feature the two best free throw shooters in the conference who are also two of the nation s best. Brian Burke leads the team and the Patriot League in free throw shooting at 96.2 percent (50-52), but does not have enough free throw makes per game (2.5) to qualify for the NCAA statistics. Brian Ehlers is the team s second best free throw shooter at a mere 88.2 percent ( ) and is ranked 13th in the nation. LOOKING AHEAD: Lafayette has at least four games remaining (three regular-season and at least one in the Patriot League Tournament) to win two games and get to a 20- win season. Lafayette went 22-8 last season and is looking to follow that up with another 20-victory campaign. The last time Lafayette posted back to back 20- win seasons was in and when the Leopards posted records of 21-6 and All but the senior members of this year s squad were not yet born when this happened. Ehlers has led Lafayette in scoring the last three games, averaging 23.3 points per game over the stretch. (see complete recap and boxscore to left) RPI UPDATE: The RPI (Ratings Percentage Index) could play a key role at the end of the season. If both Lafayette and Navy were to finish the regular season at 11-1 in Patriot League play, all three tiebreakers (head to head, records vs. other league opponents and a power ratings system) would be exhausted, forcing the final tiebreaker which is the RPI as published in the Collegiate Basketball News during the last week of the regular season. Lafayette s latest RPI is 156 following a win over Army. Navy is ranked 131 and tonight s opponent, Lehigh, is 298 of 318. The RPI is a measure of strength of schedule and how a team fares against that schedule. It is used by the NCAA as one of its factors that determine NCAA Tournament participants and seedings. Look for Frank Barr, Reggie Guy, Mike Homer, Brian Burke and Nate Klinkhammer to see minutes off the pine. This season nine players have played in all 24 games. HITTING THE BOARDS: In , Lafayette finished with a -1.5 rebounding margin, outrebounded 37.2 to 35.7 by its opponents. Lafayette s rebounding improvement was showcased against Princeton, as Lafayette outrebounded the Tigers and limited them to just one offensive rebound. BOMBING TO NEW HEIGHTS: In the past few seasons, Lafayette has had a tendency toward taking a large number of three-pointers. EHLERS: PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Senior Brian Ehlers has been named Patriot League Player of the Week for Jan. 9. The Bay Shore, NY native is coming off a 19-point, seven-rebound, five-assist performance in the Leopards overtime win over Princeton on Saturday. CIOSICI: PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Stefan Ciosici was named the Patriot League Player of the Week for the week ending Dec. 12. Ciosici averaged 16.2 points and 6.5 rebounds in a 1-1 week for the Leopards. The 6-11, 260-pound center powered in 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Lafayette past St. Peter s, 81-69, on Dec. 11. The performance was his second double-double of the season and 22nd of his career. Ciosici was 9-9 from the line and 6-12 from the field in that game. In the Leopards first game of the week, Ciosici scored 12 points on a 5-7 night from the floor. He also went a perfect 2-2 from the charity stripe. WINNING THE AUDIENCE OVER: With the improvements the men s basketball program has made in the Fran O Hanlon era, attendance has increased concurrently. In , Lafayette averaged 1,195 fans per home game and finished with a 2-25 record. The next season when Fran O Hanlon took over, the Leopards improved to 7-20 and drew an average of 1,355. In , Lafayette averaged 1,730 fans per game and finished with an mark. In , a 19-9 season, the Leopards managed 2,048 fans per game. In Lafayette averaged 2,525 fans per home game and was 10-2 at home. In the Leopards home opener, 2,287 fans came out to Kirby Sports Center to see a Lafayette win. In Lafayette is averaging 3,651 fans per game, 2,143 fans at home, 2,788 on the road and 16,697 per game at neutral sites. WORTH Y PERFORMANCES: Rob Worthington has become a fixture in the starting lineup at the No. 4 position. Worthington made his bid for more playing time against St. Joseph s (12/29) where he scored a career-high 12 points and pulled down five rebounds. His biggest contribution came with 6.1 seconds left in regulation, as he hit two free throws to send the game into overtime. He is currently averaging 3.9. points and 2.8 rebounds in 20.2 minutes per game, having started the last 15 games. 6 GAME-SPECIFIC NOTES (most recent notes listed first) PATRIOT LEAGUE START: Lafayette s 6-0 start to the Patriot League season was its best ever since joining the league in the season. The 6-0 stint topped the Pards previous best conference start of 4-0 which came in YOU CAN GO HOME AGAIN: Brian Ehlers disproved the adage that you can t go home again. Shunning the literary and philosophical significance of the phrase, Ehlers scored 24 points and hit the game-winning shot at Stony Brook on Feb. 14. Playing in front of a personal cheering section comprised of family members and friends, Ehlers would not let his homecoming be spoiled by a feisty Stony Brook squad. He scored nine of the Leopards last 11 points in the last 3:12, in a game that was played just 20 minutes from his home in Bay Shore, NY. BURKE S STREAK ENDS AT 49: After setting a new Patriot League record for consecutive free throws, Brian Burke s streak came to a halt at 49. Burke eclipsed the previous conference record of 39 held by Colgate s Mike Roberts when he hit his second of six free throws at Navy on Feb. 9. Burke s run came to an end after he was fouled on a three-pointer at Stony Brook and he missed the second of three free throws. The miss was his first since his first attempt of the season rimmed out at Columbia on Nov. 20. COACH O GETS HIS 75TH: With Lafayette s win over Holy Cross on Feb. 12, head coach Fran O Hanlon became just the fifth coach in the program s history to win 75 games. O Hanlon joins Bill Anderson (139), George Davidson (170), Tom Davis (116) and Butch van Breda Kolff (132) with 75 or more wins. BATTLE OF THE BIG GUNS: Lafayette s game at Navy (Feb. 9) pitted the Patriot League s top scorers and the frontrunners for Patriot League Player of the Year honors. Reigning Patriot League Player of the Year Brian Ehlers, who entered the game at 18.2 ppg, was barely edged out by Sitapha Savane who resided at 18.0 ppg. Ehlers knocked down 18 points on a 5-12 day while Savane connected for 19 points on a 9-16 day. HITTING THEM WHEN IT MATTERS: Lafayette was nearly perfect down the stretch in its win over Bucknell (Feb. 2). The Leopards made 11 of 12 free throws in the final five minutes to seal the win. Lafayette is shooting 69 percent from the line in that final five. Brian Ehlers hit all four of his tries in the final five minutes vs. Bucknell as did Brian Burke. A STRANGE STAT: On the whole, the Leopards have outrebounded their opponents for the season. That wasn t the case against Bucknell (Feb. 2). Lafayette was outrebounded by 17, 42-35, but went on to win The Leopards did, however, force 20 turnovers while committing just 13. WHERE S THE LOVE?: Patriot League Player of the Year Brian Ehlers averaged 28 points and 6.5 rebounds per game, went a perfect from the free throw line and shot 48 percent from the field, but finished a distant second in Patriot League Player of the Week voting for the week ending Jan. 23. Ehlers, who is Lafayette s fourth all-time leading scorer crossed the 1,000-point plateau in his 13th game in his junior season. He lost out on Patriot League Player of the Week honors to Bucknell senior Dan Bowen who recently reached his 1000th point. Bowen averaged a double-double for the week. HALF OF THE STORY: Lafayette s performance in the second half against Army (Jan. 22) was the story of the win. Lafayette used a 30-5 run to open the second half and put the game out of reach. Five different Lafayette players scored in that run with Tyson Whitfield leading the way with 11 points. The Leopards shot an incredible 68 percent from the floor, going for the half and 7-9 from three-point land. TWIN TOWERS: What many talked about in the preseason, finally came to fruition when the Leopards played Navy (Jan. 16). One of, if not the tallest, combination of big men in Patriot League history was on the floor for Lafayette. Stefan Ciosici at 6-11 and Frank Barr at 7-0 played much of the game together in the paint. Ciosici turned in 23 points and six boards and Barr came through with 10 points, five rebounds, three blocks and five steals. HOW DEEP IS THE BENCH?: Fans and journalists alike got an indication of Fran O Hanlon s substitution pattern, as Lafayette shuffled players in and out 59 times in an overtime game at Princeton (Jan. 8), compared to just five subs for the Tigers. ALL A BOARD : A key to Lafayette s win over Princeton (Jan. 8) was the way the Leopards rebounded. Lafayette allowed Princeton just one offensive rebound for the entire 45 minutes. Stefan Ciosici handled a bulk of the rebounding chores with 14 (11 def., 3 off.) followed by seven boards from Brian Ehlers. BOMBS AWAY: Lafayette s game vs. Division III Delaware Valley (Jan. 5) produced the expected result, but also provided an unusual stat. The Leopards made more three-point field goals (14) than two-point field goals (13) to finish for the night. Tyson Whitfield connected for five, Tim Bieg for four, Brian Burke for two and three other players for one. MAYBE IT WAS THE ALTITUDE: The ancient Greeks believed that the closer you were to the sun, the warmer the temperature. While proved scientifically incorrect, the notion seemed to carry some weight for the Leopards in Albuquerque, NM at the Lobo Invitational (Dec ). The higher elevation, nearly 6,000 feet in certain parts of the city, saw Lafayette free throw shooting heat up. The Leopards were (84%) from the line vs. St. Joseph s in the opening round and (86%) vs. Alabama State in the second round. MAKING THE TRIP: Lafayette closed out 1999 and opened 2000 with a lengthy road swing. The Leopards trip traversed 4,128 miles from Easton to Albuquerque (1,935) to play in the Lobo Invitational in New Mexico on Dec , from Albuquerque to Atlanta (1,393) to play Georgia Tech on Jan. 5 and back to Easton (800). SEASON HIGHS: Lafayette notched four season highs (at that point of the season) in the Leopards pasting of Alabama State on Dec. 30. The Leopards scored the most points of the season with 88, collected the most field goals with 30 and posted the most steals with 15. Lafayette also managed its best free throw shooting performance of the season, going (86%). ASSISTING IN THE WIN: Brian Ehlers and Tim Bieg posted solid numbers vs. St. Peter s (Dec. 11) and it wasn t just in the scoring category. Ehlers passed for a career-high eight assists and Bieg dished out a season-high seven. The 15-assist performance by the upperclass duo topped the Leopards team assist output in five separate games and equalled the team output for another one of Lafayette s six games. GET THAT OUT: Backup center Frank Barr was sending shots back from whence they came against Towson (12/6). The junior rejected a careerhigh seven shots to set a new school record. Barr blocked five shots twice last season and is currently averaging just under 2.0 blocks per game in the season. SHUTTING DOWN CORNELL: Lafayette shut down Cornell s offense, holding the Big Red to a 28 percent shooting night (Nov. 29. The Leopards smothering defense has a penchant for keeping the opponents offense to a minimum early on in the season. Lafayette held Dartmouth to a 27 percent clip in Lafayette s season-opener in

7 A RETURN TO HIS ALMA MATER: Fran O Hanlon made his return to the sideline of Villanova (Nov. 23), a place he spent very little time as a player from O Hanlon, who currently holds a share of the single-game assists record at Villanova (16 vs. Toledo on Feb. 24, 1970), captained a squad that reach the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals. O Hanlon finished with 689 career points and was inducted into the Villanova Hall of Fame in Villanova was in O Hanlon s three varsity seasons. G2K: The Lafayette College men s basketball program played in its 2000th game at Villanova on Nov. 23. The Leopards are currently in their 90th season with the basketball program taking root in Lafayette did not field an organized team from 1903 to 1913, but has had varsity competition every year since. A NIGHT TO REMEMBER: Lafayette turned in a strong performance at Villanova (Nov. 23). The Leopards were perfect from the free throw line in the second half, going 13-13, including a host of clutch free throw makes. For the game, Lafayette shot 17-20, an 85 percent clip. Brian Ehlers led the way with an 8-8 night followed by Stefan Ciosici s 6-8. SHUTTING DOWN CORNELL: Lafayette shut down Cornell s offense, holding the Big Red to a 28 percent shooting night (Nov. 29. The Leopards smothering defense has a penchant for keeping the opponents offense to a minimum early on in the season. Lafayette held Dartmouth to a 27 percent clip in Lafayette s season-opener in , the lowest mark off the season. MAKING THE GRADE AN ACADEMIC SLAM DUNK: Lafayette College is the only NCAA Division I institution in the nation with a perfect graduation rate for men s and women s basketball players who entered from 1989 to 1992 (1999 NCAA Graduation Rates Report). The College is ranked first in the nation as one of four Division I institutions to graduate all men s basketball players entering during that time within six years, which is how the NCAA measures graduation rates, and is among 13 schools from which all women s basketball players earned degrees. But, Lafayette is the only institution with perfect records in both sports, according to the 1999 NCAA Graduation-Rates Report, released in September. The record of success for Lafayette s student-athletes stands in contrast to the national trend, reported The Chronicle of Higher Education, especially when measuring it against the national rates. THEY RE BAAAAACK: After a search of all the Division I conferences, the Lafayette Athletic Communications staff has determined that Lafayette is the only school in NCAA history to return two players of the year to the same team. Brian Ehlers won the award in in which he averaged 18.1 ppg and 5.0 rpg and hit every clutch shot imaginable. Stefan Ciosici sat out the season with an ACL injury, but won the league citation in following a season when he posted 17.0 ppg and 7.9 rpg. PRESEASON FAVORITES: The Leopards entered the season as unanimous preseason favorites to repeat as Patriot League champions. The statement was been backed up not only by the Patriot League coaches preseason poll, but also by Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook, Street & Smith s, Lindy s, Sporting News, and Dick Vitale s College Basketball. The last team to win back-to-back titles was Colgate when it captured the Patriot League title in and PRESEASON NOTES THE CAPTAINS: The team captains as selected by their teammates are seniors Stefan Ciosici and Brian Ehlers. Both are returning league players of the year and both are entering their final seasons. In Ciosici was a dominating post presence who averaged 17.0 points and 7.9 rebounds. Ehlers took the spotlight last season, helping to fill the void left by Ciosici s preseason and season-ending knee injury. Ehlers went on to average a leaguehigh 18.1 points per game while being unanimously selected Patriot League Player of the Year. PLAYING HOST: Lafayette and the new Allan P. Kirby Sports Center will play host to the Patriot League Tournament. It will mark the first time the league tournament has been held at Lafayette since the inception of the Patriot League in The tournament will be held March 4-5 with the championship game to be hosted by the highest remaining seed on March 10 at 4:30 p.m. CLEANING UP THE PLACE: Allan P. Kirby Field House is in the process of becoming the Allan P. Kirby Sports Center. The 27-year old structure that houses Leopard basketball is in the midst of the addition of a $24 million, 110,000 square foot intramural and recreational sports facility. Additionally, the existing field house has seen $2.5 million in renovations and facelift. Project completion is set for late February. THE FRESHMEN: Head Coach Fran O Hanlon brought in a talented freshman class for the season. Winston Davis brings championship experience to the guard position, following a high school career in which he helped lead Tampa Prep to three consecutive appearances in the state tournament, while compiling an record. Davis, who averaged 15.6 points and 7.0 rebounds per game, played along side Casey Sanders who is playing at Duke. Davis, who was an McDonald s All-America Honorable Mention, is an athletic guard who highlighted his prep career with a tip dunk to win the district title with 1.2 seconds remaining. Greg McCleary averaged 13.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game in his senior season at West Catholic High School in Philadelphia. He helped propel his team to the championship game of the Catholic League. David Bonney is an intense player at the forward spot. Bonney led his Montwood High School squad to a 27-6 record and a berth into the Sweet 16 in the Texas state tournament, where his team eventually lost to the state champions. Bonney s season highlight came when he scored 16 points to help beat national power Dunbar High School in a New Mexico tournament. Scott Gearhart brings his 6-8 frame to the mix following a post-graduate season at Worcester Academy. Gearhart is a strong defender who also averaged in double figures at Worcester.
