On the final possession, Lafayette went into its offense with 12 seconds left, looking for a Joey Ptasinski jumper from beyond the arc on the left wing. His shot sailed long, but Trist was there for the board, gathering and drawing a foul with 0.4 seconds remaining. The senior rattled off the first, but drained the second and a last-second heave clanked off the rim as the Leopards survived. With the win, Lafayette moved to 6-2 on the season overall, its best start since the campaign. Additionally, the Maroon and White are 3-0 inside the friendly confines of Kirby Sports Center. Lafayette had five players score in double figures, led by 20 points from Trist on 7-of- 10 shooting from the floor. Ptasinski and Seth Hinrichs each tallied 14, while freshman Matt Klinewski added a career-high 11 points and junior Bryce Scott chipped in with 10. Ptasinski s four three-pointers moved him into fourth in the Lafayette record books for career threes at 204 during his time on College Hill. Sophomore Nick Lindner had arguably the best game of his young career, facilitating the offense with a career-high 12 assists, the first to have a 10-plus assist game since Rob Delaney 12 dished out 10 against Colgate on Feb. 23, The Doylestown, Pa. native had just one turnover and chipped in with five points of his own on the offensive end. The Leopards dropped in 31-of-65 shots from the field (47.7%), knocked down 10-of-28 from behind the arc (35.7%) and converted on 10 of their 14 free-throw attempts (71.4%), including the one that mattered most. On the other side, Sacred Heart (4-4) shot 52.5 percent from the field (31-of-59) and 35.7 percent from three (5-of-14). The Pioneers were led by De Von Barnett with 18 points, while Cane Broome and Evan Kelley chipped in with 14 points apiece. SCOUTING THE CRUSADERS Susquehanna, looking to improve upon a record a season ago, is Lafayette s only non-division I opponent of the season. The Crusaders have opened the season with a 6-2 record, tallying wins over Lycoming (91-71), Penn State Worthington Scranton (99-57), King s (Pa.) (67-45), Penn State Harrisburg (76-62), Merchant Marine (78-75) and Wilkes (100-91). The Crusaders are led by a pair of double-figure scorers in Matt McGugan (14.0 ppg) and Steven Weidlich (13.0 ppg). Weidlich also paces Susquehanna on the glass with 6.0 boards per game. The Knights, averaging 79.5 points per game to start the year, have used their high-powered offense to be successful in addition to controlling the glass with a +8.5 rebounding margin. LAST MEETING Five players scored in double figures for Lafayette in a win over Susquehanna on Dec. 1, 2010 inside Kirby Sports Center. It was the Leopards highest scoring output of the season. Nick Petkovich, Levi Giese and Rob Delaney had career highs with Petkovich leading the way with 14 points followed by Giese and Delaney with 10 each. LAFAYETTE VS. NON-DIVISION I OPPONENTS Susquehanna is the only non-division I opponent the Leopards will face this season as the Crusaders play in Division III as a member of the Landmark Conference. Over the last 10 seasons, Lafayette has gone 6-0 against Division II and III opposition. TARGET IS SECURE Throughout the non-conference slate, the Leopards have emerged as a top team in the Patriot League in taking care of the basketball, leading the league in both assist/ turnover ratio (1.2) and assists per game (15.9). Additionally, junior Bryce Scott and sophomore Nick Lindner are 1-2 in the Patriot League in assist/turnover ratio, respectively, at 3.6 and 3.0 marks. Scott s 3.6 clip ranks 26th nationally, while the 15.9 assists per game as a team is good enough for 42nd in the national rankings. WHO NEEDS DEFENSE? With the offensive firepower the Leopards are bringing to the floor, Lafayette has used an outscore the opponent approach this season. The Maroon and White are second in the Patriot League in scoring at 77.5 points per game this season and lead the league in scoring margin, putting up an average of 4.5 points more per contest than their opponents. The Leopards have figured out how to put the ball through the basket, sitting atop the league table in both field-goal and three-point field-goal percentage at 51.4 percent and 43.1 percent, respectively LAFAYETTE BASKETBALL PAGE 2
3 Hinrichs All-League, Leopards Picked to Finish Fourth EASTON, Pa. - Senior Seth Hinrichs of the Lafayette men s basketball team was selected to the Preseason All-Patriot League Team, it was announced at Patriot League Media Day. Additionally, Lafayette was picked to finish fourth in the Patriot League Preseason Poll. Coming off an season a year ago when the Leopards went just 6-12 in Patriot League play, a rebound is expected for the Maroon and White with their best player returning for his senior season. Hinrichs, an All-Patriot League Third-Team selection a year ago, was limited to just 19 games in due to a left knee injury, sidelining him for 11 games from mid-december through late January, including the Leopards first eight Patriot League contests. Hinrichs return to the starting lineup during the second half of conference play ignited a turnaround in Lafayette s season as the Leopards went 6-3 with Hinrichs in the starting five after opening the league season with an 0-9 mark. For the year, Hinrichs led Lafayette in scoring (16.7 ppg) and rebounding (5.9 rpg) and posted career highs in both categories. The Clara City, Minn. native scored 28 points in backto-back games against Yale (11/26) and Penn (11/30), and finished the regular season with 14 career 20-point games. As a team, the Leopards have high expectations for this season, returning all five starters from a team selected to finish second in last year s preseason poll. Our goals are always the same in that we want to be playing our best basketball into February and March, head coach Fran O Hanlon said, entering his 20th season on the Lafayette sideline. We want to improve over the course of the season and we d love to get off to a good start, but we re aware of our daunting schedule. We just want to continue to grow and come together as a team throughout the year. The slate begins on Nov. 14 with a trip to Western Pennsylvania to take on Robert Morris at 7 p.m. The Patriot League Preseason Poll and All-League Squad are shown below. Preseason Rankings 1. JOEY P FOR THREE Senior Joey Ptasinski has been on fire from three-point range in his senior campaign. Ptasinski went 4-for-7 from beyond the arc in the win over Sacred Heart and is 27-for-47 on the year (57.4%), good enough for sixth in the national rankings and second in the Patriot League. GETTING THE TRIST OF IT Dan Trist has become a force on the block in his final season in Easton, adding 20 points in the win over Sacred Heart to move him to 1,064 points in his storied career on College Hill. The senior has gone 56-for-93 from the field (60.2%) and has ripped down 48 boards in eight games to pace the Leopards on the glass. His efficiency from the field ranks him sixth in the league in field-goal percentage and 34th in the national rankings. Trist led the Patriot League in field-goal percentage in , shooting 54.5 percent from the field, good enough for 37th in the national rankings. Possessing a bevy of low-post moves in his arsenal, Trist averaged 12.8 points per game a year and ripped down 5.4 boards per contest, both good enough for second on the team behind Seth Hinrichs 16.4 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE Against FDU, senior Dan Trist tallied 18 points and 13 rebounds for his first double-double since he scored 19 points and ripped down 10 rebounds in a win over American on Feb. 15, The FDU performance is just the third double-double of the senior s career, recording his other two a season ago. MAKE MORE THAN YOU MISS Offensive efficiency has been a key to the Leopards success recently as Lafayette has shot better than 50 percent from the field in 18 of its last 39 contests dating back to last season and five of its eight games this season. Against Sacred Heart, Lafayette went 31-for-65 from the floor (47.7%), 10-for-28 from distance (35.7%) and 10-for-14 (71.4%) from the free-throw line. The Maroon and White are first in the league in field-goal percentage as a team (51.4%) and 11th in the national rankings. Additionally, the Leopards hold the top spot in shooting from beyond the arc at 43.1% and are second in free-throw percentage (74.8%), good enough for the ninth and 26th spots in the national rankings, respectively. CLUTCH FROM THE STRIPE A staple of O Hanlon s teams through the years, Lafayette is once again an excellent free-throw shooting team this season, dropping in 122-of-163 shots from the line, a 74.8 percent clip. Sophomore Nick Lindner and senior Seth Hinrichs have been all but automatic from the line this year, holding 91.2% and 84.6% marks from the charity stripe. The 74.8 percent mark ranks second in the Patriot League and 26th in the nation, while Lindner s 91.2 percent clip is first in the league and 21st nationally. In , the Leopards dropped in foul-line buckets at an average of 74.4 percent, good enough for second in the Patriot League rankings and 26th in the country. ALL DECIDED BUT THE FINAL STATS Against Penn and Sacred Heart, the Leopards played their only games this season that weren t essentially decided coming out of the final media timeout. At Penn, the Leopards pulled away for a six-point victory, 83-77, and against Sacred Heart, senior Dan Trist knocked through a free throw with 0.4 seconds remaining to seal an victory. In its other six games this year, the average margin has been 21.8 points as Lafayette won at Robert Morris (77-50), Princeton (83-66), FDU (82-61) and Wagner (97-84), and fell by large deficits at West Virginia (83-56) and Yale (82-60). SHRUGGING OFF THE SOPHOMORE SLUMP Sophomore Nick Lindner earned valuable minutes a year ago, starting 28-of-31 games at the point guard position as a freshman, the first since Tim Bieg 01 did it in 1997 as a rookie. This season, the Doylestown, Pa. native has picked up right where he left off, averaging 10.1 points per game, fourth on the team and 4.9 assists per contest to lead the Leopards in ball distribution. Also an excellent free-throw shooter, Lindner has dropped in 31-of-34 shots from the line (91.2%). Lindner averaged the third-most minutes on the team at 30.5 minutes per game and dropped in 10.8 points per game as the Leopards fifth-leading scorer in As a rookie, he ranked sixth LAFAYETTE BASKETBALL PAGE 4

GREAT SCOTT! Junior Bryce Scott has developed into a consistent offensive threat in the campaign. The El Dorado Hills, Calif. native struggled to open the year, but has settled into his role as the season has rolled on, averaging 8.4 points per game and making his mark on the defensive end, tied for first on the team with 13 steals. Helping out Lindner with the point guard duties at times, Scott leads the Patriot League in assist/turnover ratio at 3.6, good enough for 26th in the national rankings. A year ago, he was one of five Leopards to average in double-figures with 11.5 points per game and started 29 games for the Maroon and White, the most of any player on the team. On Dec. 19, 2013 against St. Francis Brooklyn, Scott put on a performance he ll never forget, dropping 35 points in the defeat. In that game, the El Dorado Hills, Calif. native went 10-for-17 from the field, 4-of-6 from distance and dropped in 11 of his 12 free-throw attempts. PLAYING THE MATCHUPS Head coach Fran O Hanlon has been known to run players in and out at stoppages of play, much to the chagrin of official statisticians and public address announcers. Look for the Leopards to go as many as 10 players deep on the bench this season, with O Hanlon often substituting offense-defense as early as the first half. Coach O has had eight players tally 10-plus minutes in six of the team s first eight games this season. DOWN TO THE WIRE The Leopards had eight of their games decided by five points or fewer a season ago. In those games, Lafayette went 1-7, including a stretch midway through Patriot League play where the Maroon and White dropped three straight games by less than five points, falling to American (66-61), Holy Cross (59-58) and Lehigh (71-68) from Jan Lafayette s games in have been mostly large margins, but the Leopards won their only down-to-the-wire affair in their last contest, beating Sacred Heart on a free throw from senior Dan Trist with 0.4 seconds left for the victory. FREE BASKETBALL Lafayette participated in just two overtime games in , falling in both to Princeton, on Nov. 20 and, 91-88, on Nov. 23. Head coach Fran O Hanlon boasts a mark in his career after regulation time. DOESN T HAPPEN EVERY YEAR With the win over Penn on Nov. 22, Lafayette beat Princeton and Penn in the same season for just the second time in its history and the first since the year. That season, the Leopards finished with an overall record of 15-15, going 6-8 in Patriot League play and falling to Colgate in the Patriot League Tournament quarterfinals. AT HOME ON COLLEGE HILL Head coach Fran O Hanlon is one of only seven head coaches to direct the same Division I program since the start of the season. O Hanlon is joined on the list by Jim Boeheim (Syracuse), Mike Krzyzewski (Duke), Bob McKillop (Davidson), Dave Loos (Austin Peay), Tom Izzo (Michigan State) and Phil Martelli (Saint Joseph s). SILKY SMOOTH Lafayette was deadly from beyond the arc a year ago, ranking seventh in the nation in three-point field goal percentage, dropping treys at a 39.8 percent clip. Joey Ptasinski led the league in all three outside shooting categories, including three-pointers per game (2.58), three-point percentage (44.9%) and total three-pointers made (124). Ptasinski s percentage from distance was good enough for eighth in the nation last season. The Highlands Ranch, Colo. native is making a move up the charts in the Lafayette record books, currently sitting at fourth all-time in career three-pointers (204), needing 82 to break the all-time record held by Andrew Brown 09. It s no surprise that with all these scorers, Lafayette is second in the Patriot League in scoring offense in at 77.5 points per game. As a team, Lafayette shoots 43.1 percent from beyond the arc (ninth in the nation), going 62-for-144 on the season. The Maroon and White get 28.4 percent of their offense from behind the three-point line and shoot a league-leading 51.4 percent clip from the field overall. HEY DJ, MIX IT UP The make-up of the roster is about as even across the board as you can get. The group consists of four seniors, five juniors, four sophomores and two freshmen, boasting that mix of veterans and underclassmen that always comes up in coach-speak. Additionally, New Jersey, California and Australia are the only areas that house multiple Leopards with Dan Trist and Nathaniel Musters coming to College Hill from down under, freshmen Matt Klinewski and Eric Stafford hailing from Jersey, and Bryce Scott and Ben Freeland making the cross-country trek from the west coast. The rest of the team comes to Easton from British Columbia (Jake Newman), Colorado (Joey Ptasinski), Connecticut (Billy Murphy), Minnesota (Seth Hinrichs), Missouri (Alan Flannigan), New York (Zach Rufer), Ohio (Monty Boykins), Pennsylvania (Nick Lindner) and Texas (Michael Hoffman). NO ONE-AND-ONE S The Leopards committed the third-fewest fouls of the 10 Patriot League schools a season ago, committing just 555 on the season. Working out to less than 18 per game and good enough for 42nd in the national ranks, teams were rarely in bonus situations and the Maroon and White had just six players foul-out all season. So far this season, Lafayette sits in the fourth spot, having committed 18.4 fouls per contest with no foul-out s. 1,000 Point Scorers Player Points Seasons CAPTAIN HINRICHS Senior Seth Hinrichs continues his leadership role on his own for the season after the departure of Jack Detmer 14, who shared the captaincy with Hinrichs last season. Hinrichs was named Third Team All-Patriot League as a junior, despite missing 11 games due to injury. The Clara City, Minn. native averaged 16.4 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. So far this season, Hinrichs is second on the team in scoring with 12.4 points per game and second in rebounding with 4.8 boards per contest. The senior ranks seventh in the Patriot League in freethrow percentage, knocking down charity-stripe buckets at an 84.6 percent clip, and ninth in field-goal percentage at 47.8 percent from the floor. Hinrichs has his name stamped all over the Lafayette record books, sitting in the top ten all-time in career three-point field goals (165), three-point shooting percentage (43.9%) and career free-throw shooting percentage ( , 80.8%), and 23rd in all-time scoring with 1,179 points over his time on College Hill. MR. 1,000 With five points in the loss at Yale, senior Dan Trist reached the 1,000-point plateau for his career. Trist now sits at 1,064 points over his four years on College Hill and joins Seth Hinrichs as the second active Leopard with over 1,000 points in his career. Classmate Joey Ptasinski will likely be the third to join the 1,000-point club this season, currently sitting at 897 total points. FRESH FACES Head coach Fran O Hanlon has brought in two student-athletes to make up the Lafayette Class of Both are New Jersey natives with Matt Klinewski providing depth on the block and Eric Stafford adding to the backcourt. Klinewski, a 6-8, 230-pound forward, comes to College Hill from Eastern Regional High School in Voorhees, N.J. where he started all four years at the varsity level. O Hanlon describes him as a rugged inside-outside threat with a terrific motor who has all the physical tools to be successful, coupled with a tremendous work ethic. A nominee for the 2014 McDonalds All-America game, he was named as the South Jersey Player of the Year by both the Philadelphia Inquirer and CityOfBasketballLove.com. Klinewski averaged 24.7 points per game during his senior season, making him South Jersey s leading scorer. Klinewski has seen action in all eight games to start the season, tallying season-highs in points (11) and rebounds (4) in 17 minutes of action on 5-of-5 shooting against Sacred Heart on Dec. 8. 7 the Panthers, he also participated on the golf team and played one season of baseball. On the court, he was a four-year varsity starter and led his team to the Tri-County championship a year ago. Coach O describes Stafford as a big guard with excellent basketball IQ who sees the floor extremely well and has a tremendous feel for the game. O Hanlon added that his size and skillset give him the ability to play multiple positions on the floor. At Pitman, Stafford was a two-time South Jersey champion and led his team to a state championship during his senior season. He was named to the Tri-County First Team and racked up over 1,000 points during his career. Stafford has appeared in six games for the Leopards to open the year, totaling 18 minutes of game action and recording two rebounds, an assist and a block against FDU on Nov. 30. THE BIG 2-0 The all-time winningest coach in Lafayette and Patriot League history and longest-tenured coach in the conference, Fran O Hanlon (Villanova, 70) is in the midst of his 20th season as the Leopards head coach. A three-time Patriot League Coach of the Year, O Hanlon has twice led Lafayette s program to the NCAA Tournament and lays claim to three Patriot League regular-season titles. MORE ON COACH O Head coach Fran O Hanlon is the Patriot League s all-time winningest coach with 275 career wins. In addition to owning the all-time wins record, O Hanlon holds the overall (571) and league (260) games coached marks. With the win over Holy Cross on Feb. 19, 2014, O Hanlon set the all-time conference wins mark of 127 and passed former Bucknell head coach Pat Flannery. Coach O currently sits at 128 Patriot League victories. ALL LAFAYETTE ON THE GRIDIRON The Leopards used a program and Patriot League-record 304 yards on 45 carries from senior tailback Ross Scheuerman to capture a 27-7 win over Lehigh in the 150th meeting of College Football s Most Played Rivalry on Nov. 22. The game was played in front of a historic crowd of 48,256 spectators at Yankee Stadium SEASON IN REVIEW Lafayette finished the season strong after struggling out of the gates, losing their first five games of the season, including two in overtime. Following the slow start, the Leopards reeled off four straight wins against Penn, Wagner, Scared Heart and Immaculata before the Hinrichs injury sent the Maroon and White into a downward turn. Lafayette would go on to lose all 11 games without Hinrichs before breaking the drought with a victory over Navy inside Kirby Sports Center on Feb. 1. A 6-3 end to the regular season helped to earn the Leopards the ninth seed in the Patriot League Tournament. Traveling to eighth-seeded Loyola in the opening round, four players in double-figures, including 22 points from Hinrichs and 18 from Joey Ptasinski, led Lafayette to a comfortable victory. That comfort would last only until the night of March 5, when the Leopards ran into an offensive buzzsaw at Boston U., finishing the year with a loss in the PL Quarterfinals. Boston U. shot 66.1 percent from the field on 37-of-56 shooting and went 10-for-21 from the three-point line (47.6%). Overall, O Hanlon s squad finished with a record of and went 6-12 in conference action, a disappointment after being selected to finish second in last year s Patriot League Preseason Poll. The Leopards look to flip the rankings this season and have their sights set on more than their fourth-seeded projection in ALUMS ABROAD Levi Giese 13 and Tony Johnson 13 signed new contracts at the end of the summer to play professionally in Uruguay and Mexico, respectively. Giese, following a brief stint professionally in Japan, signed with Club Trouville in Montevideo, Uruguay. Previously, Lafayette s third-ranked shot-blocker in program history (109 blocked shots) competed for Bambitious Nara, an expansion team in the Basketball Japan League. Johnson was the starting point guard for the SPM Shoeters Den Bosch in the Dutch Basketball League (DBL) a year ago and led his team to the finals of its league tournament. Finishing fourth all-time in steals (160) and sixth in assists (374) in Lafayette history, the Folsom, Calif. native signed with Fuerza Regia, located in Monterrey, Mexico. In the DBL, Johnson averaged 9.1 points per game for Den Bosch, as well as 3.2 assists and 1.5 steals per game in 26.9 minutes per contest. He went 121-for-213 from the field (56.8%) and knocked down 25-of-78 shots from distance (32.1%) Patriot League Standings LEAGUE OVERALL W L Pct. W L Pct. The Leopards have been picked to finish in the top half of the standings each of the last five years, selected third in 2010, fourth in 2011, fourth in 2012, second last year and fourth this season. The goal this season for the Maroon and White will be to make good on those projections as Lafayette finished the year third in 2010, sixth in 2011, fifth in 2012 and ninth last season. PACK YOUR BAGS After traveling a total of 12,969 miles in , the Leopards cut back a year ago with the furthest trip just 286 miles away in Boston, Mass. This season, the Leopards make their longest road trips to Kansas (1,160 miles), Robert Morris (315 miles) and West Virginia (305 miles). The Leopards opened with Robert Morris and West Virginia in one shot to start the year, making the initial trip more manageable. HITTING THE BOOKS At Lafayette, succeeding as a student-athlete is much more than simply success on the court or field. Seth Hinrichs and Joey Ptasinski were examples of that last season, earning spots on both the Academic All-Patriot League Team and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Honors Court. Hinrichs carries a 3.5 cumulative GPA into his senior season as an Economics major, while Ptasinski holds a 3.44 cumulative GPA, majoring in Biology. Additionally, Dan Trist and Billy Murphy joined Hinrichs as Patriot League Academic Honor Roll selections. Trist boasted a 3.5 GPA in the spring semester as an Economics major, while Murphy, also an Economics major, tallied a 3.57 spring-semester GPA to qualify for the honor. Hinrichs totaled a 3.35 GPA in his spring classes. KNOCKING OFF THE RUST Lafayette played in two preseason scrimmages in preparation for the season. The Leopards played Columbia on the road on Nov. 1 and then met Hartford on Nov. 8. PATRIOT LEAGUE QUICK HITS (as of Dec. 14) Kyle Wilson scored 30 points to lead Army s comeback win at USC. Wilson scored a pair of buckets and Kevin Ferguson added another to cut Army s deficit to with 2:37 left, and a Larry Toomey three-pointer and Wilson basket tied the score at with 24 seconds to play to complete an 11-2 run to close regulation. Army opened the overtime with three-pointers by Toomey and Wilson and led by at least four points throughout the extra session while going 10-of-12 at the foul line to ice the win. It was Army s first victory over a Pac-12 opponent since beating Washington State on Dec. 29, Ferguson added 14 points, while Toomey scored 12 and Luke Morrison finished with 11. John Papale hit a fadeaway three-pointer with 3.4 seconds left to give Boston University a win at home against Quinnipiac. BU played from behind most of the game, but scored the last five points while holding Quinnipiac scoreless for the final three minutes. Cedric Hankerson led BU with 23 points while Papale scored 13, and the Terriers shot 21-of-23 at the foul line. Holy Cross and were tied with under 10 minutes left before the Crusaders went on a 12-2 run and led by at least seven the rest of the way in the win. Justin Burrell led Holy Cross with 18 points while Malcolm Miller scored 17. Maryland Eastern Shore closed the game on a 19-2 run to rally for a win over Navy, which led by as many as 13 points in the second half. Brandon Venturini led the Mids with 13 points. New Hampshire finished with a 12-2 run to earn the win over Colgate, which was led by Damon Sherman-Newsome and Austin Tillotson with 15 points apiece LAFAYETTE BASKETBALL PAGE 8
