Lafayette trails the all-time series 16-7, but has won the last five meetings. The last Holy Cross win was a decision on Feb. 15, The first series meeting came on Feb. 4, 1947, a Lafayette loss in a game played in Boston. LAST TIME THEY MET: (Lafayette 79, Holy Cross 65 Feb. 6, 1999) Ted Cole led five scorers in double figures and the Leopards to a road win. Cole scored 14 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Brian Ehlers would not be outdone, however, as the he put up 12 points and grabbed 10 boards. Frank Barr chipped in with a career-high 12 rebounds. The Leopards struggled in the first half, failing to score in the first five minutes. Lafayette mustered just 28 percent from the floor, but trailed by just five, 35-30, at the intermission. The second half saw Lafayette take the lead for good seven minutes in when Barr hit two free throws. Barr was more demonstrative on the next possession, finishing off a fast-break opportunity with a one-handed dunk. The score was part of a decisive 15-6 run by the Leopards. Treys by Tim Bieg and Dave Klaus helped the Leopards keep pace two times in the waning minutes. Lafayette capped the game with eight free throws in the final 1:38. Bieg finished with 15 points, including four treys, and passed for four assists. Tyson Whitfield added 11 points off the bench. (see boxscore on pg. 71 of the Lafayette media guide) LAFAYETTE VS. THE PATRIOT LEAGUE: Lafayette has played 469 games against the six members of the Patriot League, and has a record in all games against them. In Patriot League play, Lafayette is in regular-season and 5-8 in the Patriot League Tournament. Under Fran O Hanlon, the Leopards are in the Patriot League, and 21-4 over the past two seasons and into the current campaign. Lafayette went 10-2 in both and with the Leopards losses coming to Bucknell and Navy in and two losses to Colgate in This season Lafayette is 1-0 with a win over Navy. Army Colgate Lehigh Bucknell Holy Cross Navy HE CAN SCORE : Brian Ehlers has scored in double figures in 58 of his last 63 games and has scored in double figures in 12 of 14 games this season Ehlers had a 45-game double-digit scoring streak snapped against Towson. His streak spanned three seasons, beginning at Bucknell on Jan. 14, In , Ehlers led Lafayette s scoring attack in 24 of 30 games. WORTH Y PERFORMANCES: Sophomore Rob Worthington has become a fixture in the starting lineup at the No. 4 position. Worthington made his bid for more playing time against St. Joseph s (12/29) where he scored a career-high 12 points and pulled down five rebounds. His biggest contribution came with 6.1 seconds left in regulation, as he hit two free throws to send the game into overtime. He is currently averaging 4.0 points and 3.0 rebounds in 18.2 minutes per game, having started the last five games.

3 OH SO CLOSE: Lafayette s non-conference slate to date has brought the Leopards so close to some big-time wins. Lafayette has lost five non-conference games by a total of 23 points. Lafayette lost to Villanova by four (74-70), Towson by two (59-57), St. Joseph s by two in overtime (83-81), Georgia Tech by 11 (75-64) and Penn by four (80-76). HE CAN PASS TOO: Because of his scoring prowess, Brian Ehlers ability to distribute the ball often gets overlooked. The senior is averaging 3.6 assists per game. He has passed for 6.3 per game over the last three outings and has dished for three or more assists on 10 different occasions in NON-CONFERENCE PLAY: After getting its conference slate underway today, Lafayette will not play another non-conference game until Feb. 7 when it hosts Albany, a game that precedes Lafayette s second time around against Patriot League opponents. MAKING THE GRADE AN ACADEMIC SLAM DUNK: Lafayette College is the only NCAA Division I institution in the nation with a perfect graduation rate for men s and women s basketball players who entered from 1989 to 1992 (1999 NCAA Graduation Rates Report). The College is ranked first in the nation as one of four Division I institutions to graduate all men s basketball players entering during that time within six years, which is how the NCAA measures graduation rates, and is among 13 schools from which all women s basketball players earned degrees. But, Lafayette is the only institution with perfect records in both sports, according to the 1999 NCAA Graduation-Rates Report, released in September. The record of success for Lafayette s student-athletes stands in contrast to the national trend, reported The Chronicle of Higher Education, especially when measuring it against the national rates. THEY RE BAAAAACK: After a search of all the Division I conferences, the Lafayette Athletic Communications staff has determined that Lafayette is the only school in NCAA history to return two players of the year to the same team. Brian Ehlers won the award in in which he averaged 18.1 ppg and 5.0 rpg and hit every clutch shot imaginable. Stefan Ciosici sat out the season with an ACL injury, but won the league citation in following a season when he posted 17.0 ppg and 7.9 rpg. THE COACHING STAFF: Head Coach Fran O Hanlon (Villanova 70) is in his fifth season on College Hill. The and Patriot League Coach of the Year, O Hanlon has brought prosperity to the Lafayette basketball program, guiding the Leopards to consecutive Patriot League titles and a berth into the NCAA Tournament in Following a 22-8 mark in , the program s first 20-win season since , O Hanlon holds a career record at the helm of a non-scholarship program. Previously, O Hanlon served as an assistant for six years at Penn, where from the Quakers earned three straight NCAA Tournament berths and went 42-0 in Ivy League play. On the bench with O Hanlon are Pat Brogan (Dickinson 90) in his sixth season, Mike McKee (Lehigh 94) in his third and Mike Longabardi (Frostburg St. 96) in his first season. GOING DEEP: For those new to watching Lafayette, the scorer s table may appear to be the busiest place on the basketball court. Fran O Hanlon s confidence in his bench fits well with his philosophy of keeping players fresh on the floor. O Hanlon very frequently goes 10 to 12 deep into the bench depending on the flow of the game, and at least 10 deep in every game. Look for Frank Barr, Reggie Guy, Mike Homer, Brian Burke and Nate Klinkhammer to see minutes off the pine. Thus far in the season 10 players have played in all 14 games, not including Guy who has missed six games due to injury. REALLY DEEP: Fans and journalists alike got an indication of Fran O Hanlon s substitution pattern, as Lafayette shuffled players in and out 59 times in an overtime game at Princeton, compared to just five subs for the Tigers. 14 LAST GAME LAFAYETTE 80, NAVY 74 JAN. 16, 2000 KIRBY SPORTS CTR. 6 GAME-SPECIFIC NOTES ALL A BOARD : A key to Lafayette s win over Princeton was the way the Leopards rebounded. Lafayette allowed Princeton just one offensive rebound for the entire 45 minutes. Stefan Ciosici handled a bulk of the rebounding chores with 14 (11 def., 3 off.) followed by seven boards from Brian Ehlers. BOMBS AWAY: Lafayette s game vs. Division III Delaware Valley produced the expected result, but also provided an unusual stat. The Leopards made more three-point field goals (14) than two-point field goals (13) to finish for the night. Tyson Whitfield connected for five, Tim Bieg for four, Brian Burke for two and three other players for one. MAYBE IT WAS THE ALTITUDE: The ancient Greeks believed that the closer you were to the sun, the warmer the temperature. While proved scientifically incorrect, the notion seemed to carry some weight for the Leopards in Albuquerque, NM at the Lobo Invitational. The higher elevation, nearly 6,000 feet in certain parts of the city, saw Lafayette free throw shooting heat up. The Leopards were (84%) from the line vs. St. Joseph s in the opening round and (86%) vs. Alabama State in the consolation game. MAKING THE TRIP: Lafayette closed out 1999 and opened 2000 with a lengthy road swing. The Leopards trip traversed 4,128 miles from Easton to Albuquerque (1,935) to play in the Lobo Invitational in New Mexico on Dec , from Albuquerque to Atlanta (1,393) to play Georgia Tech on Jan. 5 and back to Easton (800). SEASON HIGHS: Lafayette notched four season highs in the Leopards pasting of Alabama State on Dec. 30. The Leopards scored the most points of the season with 88, collected the most field goals with 30 and posted the most steals with 15. Lafayette also managed its best free throw shooting performance of the season, going (86%). ASSISTING IN THE WIN: Brian Ehlers and Tim Bieg posted solid numbers vs. St. Peter s (12/11) and it wasn t just in the scoring category. Ehlers passed for a career-high eight assists and Bieg dished out a season-high seven. The 15-assist performance by the upperclass duo topped the Leopards team assist output in three separate games and equalled the team output for another of Lafayette s six games. Ehlers is currently averaging 3.6 assists per game while Bieg leads the team at 4.1 per outing. G2K: The Lafayette College men s basketball program played in its 2000th game at Villanova on Nov. 23. The Leopards are currently in their 90th season with the basketball program taking root in Lafayette did not field an organized team between 1903 and 1913, but has had varsity competition every year since. GET THAT OUT: Backup center Frank Barr was sending shots back from whence they came against Towson (12/6). The junior rejected a career-high seven shots to set a new school record. Barr blocked five shots twice last season and is currently averaging just under 2.0 blocks per game in the season. A NIGHT TO REMEMBER: Lafayette turned in a strong performance at Villanova. The Leopards were perfect from the free throw line in the second half, going 13-13, including a host of clutch free throw makes. For the game, Lafayette shot 17-20, an 85 percent clip. Brian Ehlers led the way with an 8-8 night followed by Stefan Ciosici s 6-8. SHUTTING DOWN CORNELL: Lafayette shut down Cornell s offense, holding the Big Red to a 28 percent shooting night. The Leopards smothering defense has a penchant for keeping the opponents offense to a minimum early on in the season. Lafayette held Dartmouth to a 27 percent clip in Lafayette s season-opener in , the lowest mark off the season forced by the Leopard defense. PRESEASON NOTES PRESEASON FAVORITES: The Leopards entered the season as unanimous preseason favorites to repeat as Patriot League champions. The statement was been backed up not only by the Patriot League coaches preseason poll, but also by Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook, Street & Smith s, Lindy s, Sporting News, and Dick Vitale s College Basketball. The last team to win back-to-back titles was Colgate when it captured the Patriot League title in and PLAYING HOST: Lafayette and the new Allan P. Kirby Sports Center will play host to the Patriot League Tournament. It will mark the first time the league tournament has been held at Lafayette since the inception of the Patriot League in The tournament will be held March 4-5 with the championship game to be hosted by the highest remaining seed on March 10 at 4:30 p.m. CLEANING UP THE PLACE: Allan P. Kirby Field House is in the process of becoming the Allan P. Kirby Sports Center. The 27-year old structure that houses Leopard basketball is in the midst of the addition of a $24 million, 110,000 square foot intramural and recreational sports facility. Additionally, the existing field house has seen $2.5 million in renovations and facelift. Project completion is set for late February. THE FRESHMEN: Head Coach Fran O Hanlon brought in a talented freshman class for the season. Winston Davis brings championship experience to the guard position, following a high school career in which he helped lead Tampa Prep to three consecutive appearances in the state tournament, while compiling an record. Davis, who averaged 15.6 points and 7.0 rebounds per game, played along side Casey Sanders who is playing at Duke. Davis, who was an McDonald s All-America Honorable Mention, is an athletic guard who highlighted his prep career with a tip dunk to win the district title with 1.2 seconds remaining. O Hanlon is looking to three other freshmen to help solidify the power forward position. Greg McCleary averaged 13.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game in his senior season at West Catholic High School in Philadelphia. He helped propel his team to the championship game of the Catholic League. David Bonney is an intense player at the forward spot. Bonney led his Montwood High School squad to a 27-6 record and a berth into the Sweet 16 in the Texas state tournament, where his team eventually lost to the state champions. Bonney s season highlight came when he scored 16 points to help beat national power Dunbar High School in a New Mexico tournament. Scott Gearhart brings his 6-8 frame to the mix following a post-graduate season at Worcester Academy. Gearhart is a strong defender who also averaged in double figures at Worcester.
