The Ramblers saw a 13-point second half lead evaporate over the final six minutes, with the Broncos forcing overtime on a clutch basket with 1.7 seconds remaining. Maggie Mc- Closkey drained nine three-pointers en route to a career-high 35 points in last season s game against the Chippewas, who enter the game 0-2 this season. The Chicago native made his mark as a boys high school basketball coach in Michigan City, Ind. and served one season as the Director of Basketball Operations for Loyola s men s team ( ) before joining the women s basketball staff as an assistant coach. A former collegiate teammate of Loyola men s basketball assistant coach Patrick Baldwin at Northwestern, Simpson graduated from the Evanston institution in 1994 after a decorated prep career at St. Ignatius. THE CENTRAL SERIES Today is just the second meeting between the two teams with Loyola earning the victory in the only previous meeting, an entertaining win last season at the Gentile Center. Senior Maggie McCloskey was the star of the show for the Ramblers, setting a single-game record with nine three-pointers en route to her career-high 35 points. Britni Houghton was nearly as impressive for the Chippewas, FAMILIAR FACES IN FAMILIAR PLACES... There are high expectations in Rogers Park this season as Loyola returns all five starters and 12 letterwinners from last year s team. In fact, the Ramblers return 99% of both their scoring and rebounding, as their two-person graduating class last season contributed a total of 14 points and five rebounds all season. This season, Loyola will lean heavily on its five-person senior class that has started a combined 231 games during their tenure. MAC MATCHUP Today is the second of three games for Loyola against Mid-American Conference foes this season. Including Thursday night s loss to Western Michigan, the Ramblers are all-time against current MAC teams, with 16 of those games coming against former conference mate Northern Illinois. Loyola had won its last three games versus MAC teams prior to the loss to the Broncos. BODENSTEINER IN BEIJING After wrapping up her collegiate playing career at Stanford, first-year assistant coach Clare Bodensteiner competed in the 2008 Beijing Olympics for New Zealand. The Kiwis were eliminated from medal contention in the group stages with a loss to the United States. * includes ties ROSTER DOUBLE FIGURES Name Season Career Elyse VanBogaert 2 39 Keisha Collins 2 34 Jessica Hylton 1 23 Monica Albano 1 1 Maggie McCloskey 0 47 Brittany Boeke 0 19 Shannon Finnegan 0 9 Lisa Samplawski 0 4 Ellen Ayoub 0 3 No. Name Pos. Maggie McCloskey PRESEASON PROGNOSTICATION Loyola was slotted ninth in the Horizon League s Preseason Poll, voted upon by head coaches, sports information directors and select media members. The Ramblers finished ninth last year but return all five starters and 12 letterwinners and welcome in a talented cast of newcomers. MAGGIE AND MILESTONES Senior guard Maggie McCloskey enters the season on the cusp of a pair of personal milestones, as she sits 16 points shy of 1,000 for her career and is five three-pointers away from equaling Ciara Henderson s Loyola record. McCloskey would become the 19th Rambler to reach the 1,000-point plateau (and first since Jenna Real during the season). LEAGUE RECORD ON HORIZON Not only is Maggie McCloskey closing in on Loyola s career record for three-pointers but the Horizon League career record is also well within reach for the senior sharpshooter. McCloskey s 241 career trifectas place her 5th on the League s all-time list, 36 short of Jessica Wilhite s record. Name School 3FGM 1. Jessica Wilhite ( ) Milwaukee Chandra Hollingsworth ( ) Wright State Jackie Closser ( ) Butler Ciara Henderson ( ) Loyola Maggie McCloskey ( ) Loyola 241 ELYSE LOOKING TO ECLIPSE 1,000 AS WELL Like Maggie McCloskey, senior Elyse VanBogaert is also in line to reach 1,000 career points this season as the Elburn, Ill. native sits just 135 points short after an 15-point performance on Thursday night at Western Michigan. Should both players accomplish the feat, they would be the sixth set of classmates to be inducted into the 1,000 Point Club at Loyola and first since Marquise Hanser and Jenna Real reached the milestone during the season. Should VanBogaert maintain her scoring average of 12.2 points per game, it will take her 12 more games to score the necessary 135 points. KEISHA ON POINT IN OPENING TWO GAMES If this first week is any indication, senior point guard Keisha Collins is primed to make her final season her best, as she delivered an 18-point, seven-rebound, five-assist performance in Loyola s opener against St. Xavier and added 13 points and four assists against just one turnover against Western Michigan. Collins, who was hobbled by a lingering ankle injury last season, has showed some old explosiveness, getting to the free throw line 24 times in the two games. ROAD KILL One area that Loyola is aiming to improve this season is its performance on the road. The Ramblers were 4-12 away from home last season and are just (19.3%) on the road since the start of the season.

BRITTANY BOEKE (2) Bradley 14 pts./11 reb Robert Morris 11 pts./12 reb. HYLTON MORE THAN A SOCIALITE Senior Jessica Hylton is another Loyola player eagerly anticipated the start of the season. After an up-and-down junior season, Hylton exploded for 15 points (5-8 FG, 3-3 3FG) and added eight rebounds in 25 minutes off the bench against Western Michigan. Hylton s scoring averaged dipped to 6.1 pgg (from 8.5) last season. NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE IMPORTANCE OF A GOOD START One gauge for forecasting the outcome of Loyola s games lately has been its first-half performance. Last season, the Ramblers were 7-5 when leading at the half but an abysmal 1-15 when entering the locker room trailing. Slow starts leading to losses has been a trend in Rogers Park over the last few seasons, as LU is just 1-35 when trailing at the half over the last two seasons (81-63 win over Robert Morris last year) and the last 103 times in which its been behind after 20 minutes. CAN T WIN IF YOU CAN T REBOUND One of the major areas in which Loyola needs to improve is its performance on the backboards. The Ramblers ranked 10th in the Horizon League last year with a -6.6 rebounding margin but, as the numbers below illustrate, they were successful when they were able to rebound the basketball and finish off its defensive stops. Loyola outrebounded Robert Morris, 52-35, in its exhibition game and was +9 in its opener against St. Xavier. Result DREB % Margin 8 wins 68.3% losses 56.2% Sunday (W) 81.6% +9 Thursday (L) 61.9% -8 DOIN FINE FROM 19 9 Led by Maggie McCloskey s 78, Loyola knocked down 158 shots from behind the three-point line last year. After an off-shooting night (3-17 3FGs) in the opener, the Ramblers buried 9-of-15 treys on Thursday night to keep intact a streak that has seen them hit at least one three-pointer in 364 consecutive games dating back to March, 1996, when they were blanked from the arc in their season-ending loss to Green Bay (Mar. 7, 1996). BENCH BOOST Loyola has gotten a big lift from its bench as the Rambler pine has averaged 29 points per game through their first two games. In fact, the 31 points off the bench against Western Michigan are the most from the LU bench since posting 43 against Cleveland State in March, However, that number is skewed a bit, as several regular starters came off the bench on Senior Day. Aside from that, Thursday was LU s highest total since posting 38 points on Jan. 8, 2005 against Milwaukee. AYOUB OPENING EYES Ellen Ayoub has her eyes set on a strong sophomore season and the former Buffalo Grove High School standout delivered one of the best performances of her young career on Thursday night, posting eight points and five rebounds in 25 minutes off the bench against Western Michigan. THIS MONICA MAKES STRING MUSIC Freshman Monica Albano arrived in Rogers Park with an impressive offensive pedigree and she has shown off some of the skills that helped her score over 2,000 career points at Trinity High School. Albano opened the season in the starting lineup and has flourished, finishing with 13 points and seven rebounds in her debut and following that up with nine points in 20 foul-plagued minutes on Thursday night. KATIE SETS UP KAMP IN STARTING LINEUP Sophomore Katie Kortekamp took advantage of her first collegiate start on Thursday night, finishing with eight points, four assists and two steals against Western Michigan. A non-scholarship player, Kortekamp s athleticism and energy gave the Ramblers a big lift. Her 37 minutes against WMU, amazingly, equaled 41% of the total playing time she saw last season (90 minutes). SIGNED, SEALED, DELIVERED... Head coach Eric Simpson and his staff announced the signing of three recruits to National Letters of Intent during last week s early signing period. Post Lauren Hibbard (Milwaukee, Wis./West Allis Central), wing Troy Hambric (Detroit, Mich./Detroit Country Day) and point guard Lyndsey Booker (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington) all put pen to paper during the early signing period and will join the Rambler family next season.

For the second straight game, Loyola enjoyed a sizeable second half lead only to see it shrink down the stretch. Whereas the Ramblers were able to comfortably stave off St. Xavier in the BOXSCORE BREAKDOWN opener, Western Michigan was able to complete the comeback, in large part due to some Loyola missed free throws down the stretch.
