One of the premier high school coaches in the Midwest before moving to the collegiate ranks, Reidy turned south-suburban Marian Catholic into a perennial state title contender, posting a (.748) record in her seven seasons. More impressively, her charges went (.871) over the last three years, advancing Downstate three times including a runner-up finish and a 31-2 record in Despite a career record at Loyola, she has helped build the foundation for a successful program and will rely heavily on a core group of freshmen and sophomore this season as the team develops. RAMBLERS/TIGERS - THE SERIES Tonight is the first meeting between Loyola and Memphis. In fact, this is the Ramblers first-ever game against any current member of Conference USA. Among the teams in this week s tournament, Loyola has only faced Texas-Pan American, splitting a pair of meetings against the Broncos in OUT WITH THE OLD... One of challenges this season will be replacing the production of last year s nowgraduated senior class. The quartet of Marquise Hanser, Jenna Real, Emily Ponder and Danielle Nabolotny accounted for 957 points last season (50.8% of the team s total) and Hanser and Real - both All-Horizon League Second Team selections - each surpassed the 1,000-career point mark last season, becoming the first set of classmates to turn the trick since Ciara Henderson and Meskhenet Lands during the season.... IN WITH THE NEW Loyola has four newcomers in uniform this season with freshman Brittany Boeke and sophomore transfer Keisha Collins, especially, logging heavy minutes. Boeke, a versatile player who, despite her 6-foot-2 size, was a high school point guard, gives Loyola some flexibility while Collins, who started as a freshman at Southern Indiana before transferring, is a high-energy point guard who is familar with Reidy s system having played for her at Marian Catholic. THIS LAND (OF LINCOLN) IS OUR LAND Loyola s roster has a distinct local flare with all 11 players coming from the state of Illinois and nine of the 11 coming from the Chicagoland area. In fact, Brittany Boeke had the longest trek to Loyola (72 miles from Cherry Valley, Ill. to Loyola s campus) with Elyse VanBogaert second (60 miles from Elburn, Ill.). RAMBLERS CAN DRIVE, BUT CANT SCORE, 55 Uncharacteristically, one of the big problems for Loyola this season has been its inability to score points on a consistent basis. In fact, Loyola has been held under 60 points in each of its last seven games and scored over 55 just once (56 against Bradley) in that span. To put that into perspective, Loyola scored under 60 just five times all of last season. RAMBLINGS... Elyse VanBogaert had blocked at least one shot in each of Loyola s first seven games before failing to record one against DePaul Maggie McCloskey is shooting just 31.3% (20-for-64) over her last six games McCloskey has hit at least one trey in all nine games this year and in 34 of 37 career contests Loyola welcomes Raven Gengler as a walk-on. Gengler was a four-year letterwinner in softball at Loyola and helped Fenwick to the Illinois state basketball title in 2001.

A Preseason All-Horizon League Second Team pick, the Riverside, Ill. native drilled 73 three-pointers last season, good for second on Loyola s single-season list, and finished 19th in the country (fourth among freshmen) with FGM per game. McCloskey has picked up this year where she left, knocking down 26 treys in LU s first nine games (2.89/game), and enters play tonight just one trifecta shy of 100 for her career. OF ALL THE BASKETBALL PROGRAMS IN ALL THE TOWNS IN ALL THE WORLD, VANBOGAERT WALKS INTO OURS... Sophomore Elyse VanBogaert has stepped up her production this season, ranking second on the Ramblers in scoring and rebounding through nine games. The Elburn, Ill. native has scored in double figures in five of those nine games - after reaching double digits just three times last season - and is averaging 11.1 ppg so far this season. However, VanBogaert has strugged a bit over her last three games, averaging just 7.3 ppg and a meager 3.0 rpg in that stretch. ROGERS PARK HYLTON OPEN FOR BUSINESS Sophomore Jessica Hylton has stepped up her play of late and has the opportunity to provide some stability and scoring from the 3 spot. After a slow start to the season, Hylton scored all 10 of her points in the second half against Chicago State and narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and a career-high 10 rebounds against Bradley. Tonight will be Hylton s eighth career starting assignment (four as a freshman last season) and she is averaging 6.3 ppg and 5.8 rpg as a starter for her career and 7.3 ppg and a sterling 7.7 rpg in three starts this season. REUNITED AND IT FEELS SO GOOD Point guard Keisha Collins has eagerly awaited the start of the since transferring to Loyola prior to last season. Collins, who played her high school ball for Reidy at Marian Catholic, is contributing immediately with her talent and knowledge of Loyola s system. She averaged 11.2 ppg and 4.0 apg while starting all 30 games as a freshman at Southern Indiana before coming home to Rogers Park and has started all eight games this season in which she has played, averaging 35.5 minutes/game at the point guard position. ONE AND DONE After nine games, one disturbing trend has been Loyola s lack of consistency on the backboards, both offensively and defensively. The Ramblers have been outrebounded on the offensive glass thus far, with their opponents using that to gain an edge for the season in second-chance points, an edge that equates to an average of 10.2 more points per game for their opponents. STARTERS CLOCKING IN While trying to find consistency at the 3 spot, Loyola has leaned heavily on its starters at the other four positions for minutes and production. Heading into tonight, the quartet of Brittany Boeke, Keisha Collins, Maggie McCloskey and Elyse VanBogaert have logged just under 129 minutes (on average) of a possible 160 minutes per game, with Collins leading the way at 35.5 mpg, a total that would be even higher if not for foul trouble limiting Boeke in several games this season. Against Bradley on Thursday night, the starting five played 175 of a possible 200 minutes (87.5%).

The most glaring example came against Chicago State, as the Cougars rattled off 13 of the last 15 points of the game to turn a nine-point deficit into a win. Against Bradley, Loyola managed just one basket over a 9:45 span in the first half, something the Braves used to spark an 18-3 run. Listed below are the details of eight game-changing runs that have proved costly for the Ramblers. Opponent Scoring Run/Time Old Score New Score Marquette 22-4/7:01 LU, 13-7 MU, Dayton 18-2/9:04 UD, 12-9 UD, Chicago State 19-2/7:04 LU, 19-9 CSU, Chicago State 13-2/3:50 LU, CSU, Northwestern 14-2/5:22 NU, NU, Illinois State 25-6/8:43 ISU, ISU, Eastern Illinois 20-4/7: EIU, 20-4 Bradley 18-3/9:45 LU, 9-4 BU, DOIN FINE FROM 19 9 Led by Maggie McCloskey s 73, Loyola hit 152 shots from behind the three-point line last season to keep intact a streak that has seen the Ramblers hit at least one three-pointer in 312 consecutive games dating back to March, 1996, when they were blanked from the arc in their season-ending loss to Green Bay (Mar. 7, 1996). However, Loyola has struggled some from the arc this season and hit just 4-of-19 (21.1%) last time out against DePaul. ONE SHY OF A PERFECT Junior Cierra Thurman has stepped up her play of late, averaging 5.8 ppg over the last four outings. The improvement can be attributed to the fact that she has made her last nine field goal attempts dating back to the first half at Illinois State. ON THE JOB TRAINING Despite having five freshmen - all of whom saw significant playing time - on last year s roster, this year s Loyola team will be even more reliant on its underclassmen as seven of the 11 players on the roster are freshmen or sophomores. To put the situation into perspective, sophomore Maggie McCloskey has more career points (424) than Loyola s three upperclassmen (Nicole Garcia, Jana Lucas, Cierra Thurman) combined (376). RE-STOCKING THE CUPBOARD Head coach Shannon Reidy and her staff have announced the signing of three recruits to National Letters of Intent. Forward Ellen Ayoub (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) and guards Lisa Samplawski (Portage, Ind./Portage) and Lindsey Sebetic (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) all put pen to paper during the early signing period and will join the Rambler family next season.
