The Chicago native made his mark as a boys high school basketball coach in Michigan City, Ind. and served one season as the Director of Basketball Operations for Loyola s men s team ( ) before joining the women s basketball staff as an assistant coach. A former collegiate teammate of Loyola men s basketball assistant coach Patrick Baldwin at Northwestern, Simpson graduated from the Evanston institution in 1994 after a decorated prep career at St. Ignatius. THE CLEVELAND SERIES Tonight is the 33rd meeting between the longtime conference foes with Cleveland State holding a edge in the all-time series. Despite the disparity in wins, Loyola has held its own at home, going 7-10 against the Vikings in the Windy City. However, Cleveland State has won the last four overall meetings and the last three here, including a win in the most recent meeting on Feb. 28, 2009 at the Gentile Center. Loyola s last win was a win in Cleveland on Feb. 1, 2007 and its last home win over CSU was an (OT) win on Feb. 28, 2006 in a Horizon League Championship First Round game. RAMBLINGS The Ramblers knocked down 10 three-pointers against Colgate, the sixth time this season they ve hit at least nine in a game Keisha Collins is shooting 80% (28-35) from the free throw line at home compared to just 53% (16-30) on the road Collins is also averaging 13.4 points per game at home this season compared to just 7.5 on the road Loyola has started 0-2 in the Horizon League in each of the last five seasons Loyola boasts the Horizon League s top two players in assist/turnover ratio in Maggie McCloskey (1st, 30:9, 3.3:1) and Keisha Collins (2nd, 54:25, 2.2:1) PUTTING THE BISCUIT IN THE BASKET Despite a solid defensive effort on Monday at Valparaiso, Loyola struggled all night to put the ball in the basket. Despite getting good looks, the Ramblers hit just 5-of-31 (16%) field goals in the first half before finishing the game at a 26% clip. In fact, their last six losses can, in some sense, be attributed to cold shooting as LU has shot under 40% in all six, including two games in which it shot under 30%. All told, the Ramblers are 6-1 when hitting at least 40% of their shots, however, as the numbers show below, their shooting has been off over the last five weeks: Span FGs FG% Record First 5 games Last 8 games FASTBREAK POINTS Total Avg. Maggie McCloskey #12 BECOMES #19 TO REACH 1,000 Senior guard Maggie McCloskey had another historically significant night for Loyola against SIUE, becoming Loyola s all-time leader in three-point field goals (more on that below) while also becoming the 19th Rambler to score 1,000 career points. McCloskey tied Ciara Henderson s three-point mark on the trey that pushed her over the 1,000 mark, as she became the first Loyola player to reach the milestone since Jenna Real during the season. HENDERSON HURDLED, MAGS WORKING ON WILHITE As mentioned in the previous paragraph, Maggie McCloskey became Loyola s all-time leader in three-point field goals against SIUE, knocking down four trifectas to surpass Ciara Henderson s previous mark. McCloskey now has her sights on Jessica Wilhite s Horizon League record, and she enters play today just 10 shy of the former UWM star s total. Name School 3FGM 1. Jessica Wilhite ( ) Milwaukee Chandra Hollingsworth ( ) Wright State Jackie Closser ( ) Butler Maggie McCloskey (2006-) Loyola Ciara Henderson ( ) Loyola DOWN, 52 TO GO Senior Elyse VanBogaert is next in line to reach the 1,000 career point milestone, as the Elburn, Ill. native sits just 52 points short after being held to just two points in Monday s loss at Valparaiso. Should she accomplish the feat, her and McCloskey would be the sixth set of classmates to be inducted into the 1,000 Point Club at Loyola and first since Marquise Hanser and Jenna Real reached the milestone during the season. If Van- Bogaert were to maintain her scoring average of 8,9 points per game, it would take her six more games to reach the mark. KEISH POINTING RAMBLERS IN RIGHT DIRECTION Senior point guard Keisha Collins has gotten off to a strong start this season, doing a little bit of everything in the early going. Collins leads the team in scoring (9.8 ppg) and assists (54, 4.2 apg) while ranking third in rebounding (4.0 rpg). The Chicago native has dished out 31 assists in her last six games (5.2 apg) despite struggling with her shooting of late, hitting just 19-of-64 (29.7%) shots over the last seven games. BOEKE S GETTING BETTER After a slow start to the season, junior Brittany Boeke has upped her production over the last couple of weeks. Highlighted by a career-high 22-point performance against Colgate, Boeke has averaged 11.0 ppg over the last five games after scoring just 5.5 ppg over LU s first eight games. PROTECTING THE ORANGE Lost in Monday s loss to Valparaiso was the way Loyola valued and protected the basketball. The Ramblers played turnover-free ball in the second half and had just five turnovers for the game, its lowest total of the year. The effort continued a recent trend for LU, as the Ramblers have averaged just 14.2 turnovers per game over the last 10 games after coughing it up 23.3 times per game in their opening three contests.

E-A...SHE S IN THE GAME Ellen Ayoub has had an up-and-down sophomore season, however, there have been plenty of shining moments through the first 13 games. Ayoub put together two of the best games of her young career against Western Illinois (career-high 14 points) and Northwestern and reached double figures again, scoring a team-high 11 points at Butler. Ayoub s season, thus far, is broken down below: Year PPG RPG FG% First 4 games Next 4 games Last 5 games NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE IMPORTANCE OF A GOOD START One gauge for forecasting the outcome of Loyola s games lately has been its first-half performance. So far this season, Loyola is 6-1 when leading or tied and 0-6 when behind at the break. Slow starts leading to losses has been a trend in Rogers Park over the last few seasons, as LU is just 1-41 when trailing at the half over the last three seasons (81-63 win over Robert Morris last year) and the last 109 times in which its been behind after 20 minutes. GETTING A JUMP ON TRAFFIC After seeing five of its first six games, and six of its first eight, decided by single digits, four of Loyola s last five games have all been decided early. In fact, prior to the nine-point game at Valpo on Monday, LU s previous four contests (two wins, two losses) have been decided by an average of 24 points per game, with the closest margin being Saturday s 19-point loss at Butler. FIRST HALF TO FORGET Loyola had a first half to forget on Monday, missing 17 straight shots at one point en route to shooting just 16.5% (5 for 31) for the period. In addition, Loyola s 12 points in the half tie the program-low for points in a half, equaling its output against Illinois (Nov. 18, 2005) and Saint Louis (Nov. 29, 2000). In addition, the five field goals made are the fewest in a half by a Loyola team since the Ramblers made just three buckets in the second half of a loss at Detroit on Feb. 12, BENCH BOOST By and large, Loyola has received a big boost from its bench in the early going this year as the Rambler reserves have contributed 24.2 ppg through 13 games, including a 46-point effort in the win over SIUE. The subs, led by Monica Albano s team-high 11 points, outscored Valpo s bench on Monday night and have outscored their opponent s bench in 11 of 13 games. FIRING UP THE WAY BACK MACHINE Loyola put together one of the best defensive performances in program history at Western Illinois, holding the Leathernecks to just 27 points on 18% shooting in a win. In addition, the nine field goals made by Western Illinois is the lowest total on record (with several boxscores from the season unaccounted for) for any LU opponent in history. Listed below are the top defensive efforts in Loyola s history: Team Score Xavier ( ) 18 College of DuPage ( ) 24 Elmhurst (2-1-80) 26 Western Illinois ( ) 27 DOIN FINE FROM 19 9 Led by the trio of Monica Albano, Jessica Hylton and Maggie McCloskey, Loyola has knocked down 89 treys in 13 games this season. Despite a cold streak that has seen the team shoot just 26% from the arc over the last two games, the Ramblers have managed to keep intact a streak that has seen them hit at least one three-pointer in 377 consecutive games dating back to March 7, 1996, when they were blanked from the arc in their season-ending loss to Green Bay. Listed below are the longest current streaks in the nation: Team Streak Canisius (NCAA record) 467 Iowa State 463 Sam Houston State 420 Tennessee 385 Loyola 377 Connecticut 371 * thru games of Jan. 6 *

Denise Lawrence, Denise Lawrence, Denise Lawrence, Maggie Toczylowski, Jackie Huszti, Brittany Boeke One of the developing characteristics of this year s Loyola s team is its balance and the ability of any of a number of players to erupt on a given night. With 10 points at Butler on Saturday, Shannon Finnegan became the eighth different Rambler to reach double figures this season and the team has six players averaging between 6.2 and 9.8 points per game thru the first 13 games. ROAD WOES One area that Loyola is aiming to improve this season is its performance on the road. The Ramblers were just 4-12 away from home last season and, despite showing some positive signs, have lost six of their eight road tilts this season. In fact, the Ramblers are just (20%) on the road since the start of the season. IS IT THE FRIENDLY RIMS? While never known as a shooter s gym, Loyola s offense has been much more productive in its five home games this season. Almost all of the Ramblers offense numbers are down when they hit the road including, most importantly, points per game. Loyola is averaging 74.0 ppg at the Gentile Center this season compared to just 53.4 on the road. The Ramblers are shooting 45% in the confines of the Gentile Center, compared to just 38% on the road, and are averaging 18.0 turnovers per game and 9.8 free throw attempts per game on the road compared to 13.6 turnovers and 22.6 free throw attempts at home. SENIOR SLUMP Senior Elyse VanBogaert will be looking to snap out of a mini-funk tonight against Cleveland State. After averaging 12.3 points per game through LU s first eight games, the Elburn, Ill. native has managed just 3.6 ppg over the last five. What s more, VanBogaert is shooting just 31% (9-29) from the floor in that span after hitting a conference-best 60% (41-68) of her shots during the opening stretch. WHY ISN T THERE A W IN DEFENSE? As potent as Loyola s offense has been at times this year, it has been the defense that has been the reason for their success thus far this season.
