The Chicago native made his mark as a boys high school basketball coach in Michigan City, Ind. and served one season as the Director of Basketball Operations for Loyola s men s team ( ) before joining the women s basketball staff as an assistant coach. A former collegiate teammate of Loyola men s basketball assistant coach Patrick Baldwin at Northwestern, Simpson graduated from the Evanston institution in 1994 after a decorated prep career at St. Ignatius. THE BUTLER SERIES Tonight is the 54th meeting between the longtime conference foes with Butler holding a lead in the all-time series. The Bulldogs have had the better of the rivalry of late, winning 10 of the last 11 meetings, a stretch which came on the heels of the Ramblers winning four of the previous five battles. Loyola is just 4-22 at Hinkle Fieldhouse, however, its last win in the series was a win here in Indy on Feb. 9, RAMBLINGS The Ramblers knocked down 10 three-pointers against Colgate, the sixth time this season they ve hit at least nine in a game Keisha Collins is shooting 80% (28-35) from the free throw line at home compared to just 53% (16-30) on the road Collins is also averaging 13.4 points per game at home this season compared to just 7.7 on the road Loyola s starting backcourt racked up 20 assists against just three turnovers in the win against Colgate Loyola boasts the Horizon League s top two players in assist/turnover ratio in Maggie McCloskey (1st, 20:8, 2.5:1) and Keisha Collins (2nd, 47:23, 2:1) BETTER LUCK ON THE HORIZON? Loyola opens another season of Horizon League play tonight, looking to improve on its 9-13 record in conference openers. The Ramblers have dropped their last four Horizon League openers dating back to a win at UIC on Dec. 23, Tonight also marks the sixth time that Loyola has opened with Butler. The Ramblers are 1-5 in those games (0-4 n Indianapolis) but earned a win at the Gentile Center in the most recent such contest on Jan. 10, FASTBREAK POINTS Total Avg. Maggie McCloskey #12 BECOMES #19 TO REACH 1,000 Senior guard Maggie McCloskey had another historically significant night for Loyola against SIUE, becoming Loyola s all-time leader in three-point field goals (more on that below) while also becoming the 19th Rambler to score 1,000 career points. McCloskey tied Ciara Henderson s three-point mark on the trey that pushed her over the 1,000 mark, as she became the first Loyola player to reach the milestone since Jenna Real during the season. HENDERSON HURDLED, MAGS WORKING ON WILHITE As mentioned in the previous paragraph, Maggie McCloskey became Loyola s all-time leader in three-point field goals against SIUE, knocking down four trifectas to surpass Ciara Henderson s previous mark. McCloskey now has her sights on Jessica Wilhite s Horizon League record, and she enters play today just 14 shy of the former UWM star s total. Name School 3FGM 1. Jessica Wilhite ( ) Milwaukee Chandra Hollingsworth ( ) Wright State Jackie Closser ( ) Butler Maggie McCloskey (2006-) Loyola Ciara Henderson ( ) Loyola DOWN, 56 TO GO Senior Elyse VanBogaert is next in line to reach the 1,000 career point milestone, as the Elburn, Ill. native sits just 56 points short after scoring 10 points in the win over Colgate. Should she accomplish the feat, her and Mc- Closkey would be the sixth set of classmates to be inducted into the 1,000 Point Club at Loyola and first since Marquise Hanser and Jenna Real reached the milestone during the season. If VanBogaert were to maintain her scoring average of 10.2 points per game, it would take her six more games to reach the mark. KEISH POINTING RAMBLERS IN RIGHT DIRECTION Senior point guard Keisha Collins has gotten off to a strong start this season, doing a little bit of everything in the early going. Collins leads the team in scoring (10.3 ppg) and assists (47, 4.3 apg) while ranking second rebounding (4.2 rpg). The Chicago native has dished out six assists in each of her last four games and while she has struggled with her shooting recently, hitting just 13-of-47 (27.7%) shots over the last five games, she did drop in a floater with 0.3 seconds left to force overtime against Northern Illinois. BLONDES HAVE MORE FUN...AND SCORE MORE POINTS After changing her hair color prior to the Colgate game, junior Brittany Boeke went out and torched the Raiders for a career-best 22 points (in just 23 minutes) in Loyola s big win. Boeke, sporting lighter locks, hit 10-of-13 field goals and was the driving force behind big runs at the start of each half, scoring 11 points as the Ramblers jumped out to a 15-0 lead then accounted for seven points in an 11-2, second half-opening run that helped the Ramblers blow the game open. Boeke is playing her best basketball of the season right now, averaging 15.0 ppg over the last three games after scoring just 5.5 ppg in LU s first eight contests.

E-A...SHE S IN THE GAME Ellen Ayoub has had an up-and-down sophomore season, however, there have been plenty of shining moments through the first 11 games. Ayoub put together two of the best games of her young career against Western Illinois (career-high 14 points) and Northwestern and had another solid game in the win over Colgate. Ayoub s season, thus far, is broken down below: Year PPG RPG FG% First 4 games Next 4 games Last 3 games NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE IMPORTANCE OF A GOOD START One gauge for forecasting the outcome of Loyola s games lately has been its first-half performance. So far this season, Loyola is 6-1 when leading or tied and 0-4 when behind at the break. Slow starts leading to losses has been a trend in Rogers Park over the last few seasons, as LU is just 1-39 when trailing at the half over the last three seasons (81-63 win over Robert Morris last year) and the last 107 times in which its been behind after 20 minutes. RUNNING OUT OF NAILS TO BITE One trend emerging from the first couple weeks of the season is that Loyola is going to play a lot of close games this season. Six of Loyola s first 11 games this season have been decided 10 points or less, including three by five points or less and two others in overtime. This is a complete reversal from last season, where only 12 of LU s 29 games were decided by single digits, with the Ramblers going just 2-10 in those games. TO THE STARTER GOES THE SPOILS Sophomore Katie Kortekamp has excelled in the early stages of the season, starting each of the last 10 games while giving the Ramblers energy, defense and intangibles on the floor. Kortekamp has filled up the stat sheet in different areas lately, scoring a career-best nine points at DePaul, snatching a career-high 10 rebounds against Western Illinois and dishing out a career-high seven assists in the win over Colgate. As a result of her effort and production on the court, Kortekamp (who opened the season as a walk-on) was awarded a scholarship starting with the second semester this season. BENCH BOOST By and large, Loyola has received a big boost from its bench in the early going this year as the Rambler reserves have contributed 23.7 ppg through 11 games, including a 46-point effort in the win over SIUE. The subs, led by Jessica Hylton s 12 points, outscored Colgate s reserves on Monday, ninth time in 11 games that the LU bench contributed more points than its opponent s reserves. FIRING UP THE WAY BACK MACHINE Loyola put together one of the best defensive performances in program history at Western Illinois, holding the Leathernecks to just 27 points on 18% shooting in a win. In addition, the nine field goals made by Western Illinois is the lowest total on record (with several boxscores from the season unaccounted for) for any LU opponent in history. Listed below are the top defensive efforts in Loyola s history: Team Score Xavier ( ) 18 College of DuPage ( ) 24 Elmhurst (2-1-80) 26 Western Illinois ( ) 27 DOIN FINE FROM 19 9 Led by the trio of Monica Albano, Jessica Hylton and Maggie McCloskey, Loyola has knocked down 78 treys in 11 games this season. Led by Jessica Hylton s four treys against Colgate, the Ramblers managed to keep intact a streak that has seen them hit at least one three-pointer in 375 consecutive games dating back to March 7, 1996, when they were blanked from the arc in their season-ending loss to Green Bay. Listed below are the longest current streaks in the nation: Team Streak Canisius (NCAA record) 465 Iowa State 461 Sam Houston State 419 Tennessee 384 Loyola 375 Connecticut 369 * thru games of Dec. 30 *

The Kiwis were eliminated from medal contention in the group stages with a loss to the United States. BALANCE TIPS SCALE TOWARDS WINS One of the developing characteristics of this year s Loyola s team is its balance and the ability of any of a number of players to erupt on a given night. Seven different Ramblers have already reached double figures this season and the team has six players averaging between 6.0 and 10.3 points per game thru the first 11 games. ROAD WOES One area that Loyola is aiming to improve this season is its performance on the road. The Ramblers were just 4-12 away from home last season and, despite showing some positive signs, have lost four of their six road tilts this season. In fact, the Ramblers are just (20.4%) on the road since the start of the season. IS IT THE FRIENDLY RIMS? While never known as a shooter s gym, Loyola s offense has been much more productive in its five home games this season. Almost all of the Ramblers offense numbers are down when they hit the road including, most importantly, points per game. Loyola is averaging 74.0 ppg at the Gentile Center this season compared to just 55.8 on the road. While their shooting percentage is fairly similar (45% at home, 42% on the road), the Ramblers are averaging 20.5 turnover per game and 11.8 free throw attempts per game on the road compared to 13.6 turnovers and 22.6 free throw attempts at home. WHY ISN T THERE A W IN DEFENSE? As potent as Loyola s offense has been at times this year, it has been the defense that has been the reason for their success thus far this season.
