3 SPIEKER AQUATICS CENTER entering its second season as UCLA s home... SPIEKER AQUATICS CENTER The long-awaited new home to UCLA s aquatics program has become a reality. The Spieker Aquatics Center opened in September 2009, in time for the start of last year s men s water polo season. PCL Construction broke ground on the facility in July In 2010, the Bruins plan to host 10 home contests in addition to hosting the SoCal Tournament the weekend of Oct. 2-3 at both Spieker Aquatics Center and Sunset Canyon Recreation Center. UCLA enjoyed playing six home games at Spieker Aquatics Center in 2009, as evening matches under the lights produced capacity crowds. The athletics department officially opened its newest facility on Sept. 26, 2009, as the men s water polo team defeated UC Irvine, 10-4, after a dedication ceremony that evening The Bruins women s water polo program hosted the MPSF Tournament in May 2009, taking advantage of the home setting to win the three-day event. Entering its second full season as UCLA s home pool, Spieker Aquatics Center features a 52-meter by 25-yard all-deep water pool with a dividing bulkhead, allowing races to take place at varying distances (meters, versus yards). The pool also has four platforms on a diving tower, at heights of three, five seven and one half, and 10-meter platforms, as well as one and three-meter springboards. In addition, the aquatics center features a warming pool for divers directly behind the tower. Adjacent to Sunset Canyon Recreation Center on the northwest portion of campus, the Spieker Aquatics Center was made possible thanks to a generous lead gift from former student-athlete Tod Spieker and his wife, Catherine. Tod, a 1971 UCLA graduate and All-American, swam for the Bruins from and still competes successfully in Master s Swimming. The main pool, Dirks Pool, is named after Carolyn Dirks, who provided the lead gift for the swimming pool. Dirks Pool has also been used for special use events and Masters Swim meets. The signature feature of the Spieker Aquatics Center is the diving tower, which sits at the west end of the pool. The east end of the pool houses the new scoreboard, an LED, state-of-the-art piece of electronics, making scores, statistics and messages easily visible to all in attendance. Next to the scoreboard is the Wall of Champions, showcasing all of UCLA s water polo, swimming and diving national championship teams, as well as all individual student-athletes achievements, record-holders and Olympians. Separate men s and women s locker rooms house enough lockers for all team members, with shower space and bathroom stalls and sinks for each team. Equipment needed for meets and matches have storage capacity on the facility s south side. When walking through the public entryway to the center, visitors first notice the Donor Wall. All donors who generously made gifts to the Spieker Aquatics Center are recognized on this wall. Additionally, over 50 former UCLA water polo players, swimmers and divers made gifts to name a locker. Those names will forever be part of the locker rooms in the new facility. The state-of-the-art facility brings together all three of UCLA s intercollegiate aquatic sports water polo, swimming and diving to one venue. The aquatics center features event lighting and permanent seating with the possibility of additional temporary seating for larger events.

5 UCLA Seeks to Build from Strong 2009 Season Backed by veteran roster and postseason experience, national title aspirations abound at Spieker Aquatics Center The UCLA men s water polo program marched one step closer to its ultimate goal in 2009, winning the MPSF Tournament before advancing to the NCAA Championship match under first-year head coach Adam Wright. But bitter memories of a 7-6 loss to crosstown rival USC in the NCAA Championship remain fresh in the Bruins minds, and UCLA has the experience and leadership to get back to the top in UCLA returns nearly 80 percent of their scoring offense from last fall. Senior Ben Hohl, a second-team All-America and All-MPSF selection one year ago, finished second on the team with 40 goals in 2009 and will be expected to help shoulder the offensive load in A left-handed attacker from Atherton, Calif., Hohl will quarterback the Bruins counterattack, leading the team in 6-on-5 situations. Sophomores Griffin White (33 goals) and Josh Samuels (32 goals) look to build off their fabulous first-year campaigns, while junior Cullen Hennessy (23 goals) will be counted on as one of the team s top veterans. The Bruins also welcome back five juniors and seniors who have each played over 50 career games, including seniors Clay Jorth, Kevin Kuga and Jacob Murphy and juniors Brett Hays and Matt Preciado. Murphy, Hays and Preciado have all competed for playing time at the center position the last two seasons, while Jorth and Kuga have served as reliable attackers in each of their three seasons. Murphy and Hohl played for the USA National Team in February 2010 at the Volvo Cup in Europe, gaining valuable playing experience alongside former teammate Scott Davidson, UCLA s leading scorer in 2009 (47 goals). Samuels and White played for the USA Junior National Team at the Pan American Championships in August 2010 along with Bruin sophomore Bret Lathrope and redshirt freshmen Chris Wendt. Those four youngsters will be counted upon to provide an offensive punch for the Bruins in While Samuels and White headlined a top-ranked recruiting class one year ago, Lathrope had a solid freshman season as well, scoring 11 goals and totaling nine steals in 30 games. Other key contributors for UCLA include senior defender Emilio Vieira and sophomore Clinton Jorth. Vieira arrived in Westwood in the summer of 2009 after having excelled clinton jorth SEASON OUTLOOK for two seasons at Golden West College. The product of Sao Paulo, Brazil, stepped right in for UCLA last fall, providing sound defense and scoring 20 goals. Jorth returned from an injury sustained early in his freshman season (2008), scoring seven goals while chipping in with 13 steals, 12 assists and 11 blocks in 2009 as a redshirt freshman. Among the most glaring question marks for UCLA as it enters the 2010 season falls at the goalkeeping position. Junior Andrew Mesesan and sophomore Matt Rapacz enter the year with little playing experience, as four-year starter Chay Lapin graduated in the spring and will work hard for a roster spot with the USA National Team. Rapacz played in 12 games one year ago, making four starts, logging 56 saves in just under 23 quarters of action. He notched a 2.58 goals against average as the primary backup JOSH SAMUELS to Lapin. Mesesan made three appearances as a sophomore last season and saw action in four contests as a freshman in He enters 2010 having logged 14 saves in just under 10 quarters. In addition to a well-rounded group of veterans, UCLA will look for contributions from its freshmen both redshirt freshmen and first-year players. The Bruins roster features eight returning redshirts (one junior, seven freshmen) and 13 incoming freshmen. UCLA s schedule features 14 regular-season matches and appearances in one pair of in-season tournaments annual two-day affairs with the NorCal Tournament (at California) and the SoCal Tournament (at UCLA for the first time). The Bruins will play 14 contests at home of which four will be played during the SoCal Tournament. After kicking off the season with a home match against Concordia (Sept. 11), UCLA heads north to Berkeley, Calif., for the two-day NorCal Tournament. One week later, the Bruins host a non-conference affair against Loyola Marymount (Sept. 25). UCLA will welcome 16 teams to campus the weekend of Oct. 2-3 for the SoCal Tournament, which will be played at Spieker Aquatics Center and the adjacent pool at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center. The Bruins dive into their MPSF slate in the Bay Area with matches at California (Oct. 9) and Pacific (Oct. 10). The next weekend, UCLA opens a six-game home stretch with perennial conference power Stanford under the lights on a Friday night (Oct. 15) before facing Chapman (Oct. 17) two days later. Ensuing home matches include UC Irvine in MPSF action (Oct. 23), an afternoon doubleheader featuring UC San Diego and Pomona Pitzer (Oct. 30) and a conference contest the next day versus Long Beach State (Oct. 31). UCLA closes its regular-season schedule with four matches in November, opening with an MPSF game at USC (Nov. 6). The Bruins final two home games include Air Force (Nov. 8) and conference challenger Pepperdine (Nov. 13), before the season closes with an MPSF contest at UC Santa Barbara (Nov. 14). Following a two-week layoff from any games, UCLA s season heats up at the MPSF Tournament, hosted by Stanford from Nov The Bruins look to win the conference tournament in back-to-back season for the first time since accomplishing that feat in 1999 and 2000 (USC last won in consecutive seasons, 2007 and 2008). California will host the 2010 NCAA Tournament the weekend of December 4-5.
