1 From The President... Hello Creekers members and friends. Issue 1 March 2015 Diamond Creek Basketball Club PO Box 74 Diamond Creek Vic 3089 President s Report Firstly, I would like to give a huge thank you to all our dedicated coaches who took the time out of their busy lives to coach our teams last season. Their contribution is well appreciated. We must also not forget our assistant coaches and team mangers that lighten the load for our coaches too. On behalf of the Diamond Creek Basketball Club Thanks!!!!! Summer Grand Final Winners We had a good presence in the Summer finals with five girls teams and four boys teams making it to the grand finals. They were nail biting games with most games either won or lost by 1 point. I would like to give a quick but special mention and congratulations to our three Summer 2014 Grand Final winning teams. The Boys Under 16-1 s coached by Galen Newel, The Girls Under 12-2 s coached by Chris Downing and, The Girls Under 16-1 s coached by Melissa Burgoyne. Well Done!!!!! Autumn Season Grading games are over and the Autumn 2015 season is underway! We are still receiving a number of registrations from those wishing to join which is great news and it is fantastic that we are able to provide a place for them in a team. This season we have a total of 32 teams which is made up of 21 boys teams and 11 girls teams, a warm welcome and good luck to all new and returning boys and girls. I d like to mention that if any boys or girls are interested in playing a second game that the opportunity is available to play up an age level. Speak to your age group coordinator if you are interested. Note though that teams are nearly full! The DCBC Committee. The Diamond Creek Basketball Club is a non-profit organisation run by a committee of volunteers. The operation of the club is directly dependent upon the availability of these willing volunteers to plan, organize and administer the club. To continue to provide our members and families with the opportunity to enjoy this fantastic sport in the Diamond Valley and to remain a competitive force, we need to have as many people as possible involved in the running of the club. We need to spread the load. I would like to ask that you please seriously consider offering your valuable time to the club to ensure the above continues to be achieved. A great answer to the obvious question of Why am I doing this..or Why should I give up my time is.i am helping 250 plus children play basketball and am helping to provide inroads into a healthy lifestyle and forming great friendships and social skills. If you can help, please come and see me or a member of the committee alternatively, give one of us a call. Lastly I look forward to another successful Creekers Autumn season and hope to see many of you at training and at the games. Enjoy the season and Go Creekers!! Stephen Martorella - DCBC President Diamond Creek Basketball Club Newsletter Autumn Season 2015

7 Page 7 Club Information Players Players are reminded they must bring a ball to training. Regulation sizes are as follows: Girls and boys up to and including Under 14 use a Size 6 ball Coaches and Team Managers Please ensure that all teams have a team manager who will co-ordinate the scoring roster and remind families of the game time and venue on a weekly basis. Older boys starting from Under 16 and above use a Size 7 ball Scorers Training is compulsory and players must advise their coach if they are unable to attend. Parents should consult with their coach to see if they are required to stay at training some coaches like to use parents to assist with their drills, and it is important for coaches to know where a player s parent or guardian is in case of injury or other issues. Please remember only to load players that have taken the court for that game rather than the whole team as Sporting Pulse counts these games even though the child might not be playing, this helps with statistics for the child. This is especially important if the child has an injury and is no longer playing in your team. All players must also bring a water bottle and wear the correct attire to training. Remember to regularly check the DVBA website for fixtures and ladders. DVBA Website: New Players 2015 DCBC Commi ee President Steve Martorella dcbcpres13@gmail.com All new players need to provide a copy of their Birth Certificate and a completed registration form which can be downloaded from our web- site. This is needed to cover your child under the insurance policy with the DVBA. 8 Page 8 Club Information DVBA calendar dates and public holidays There will never be boys games scheduled on a long weekend and there won t be any boys or girls games held on a public holiday. The DVBA Autumn 2015 calendar is attached; this includes finals dates and dates when no games are scheduled. Training As a courtesy to other teams and coaches, please ensure you vacate your training court at the scheduled time. There will not be any training scheduled on a public holiday or in school holidays otherwise training is compulsory even when you may not have a game the following week. Fill-in players In the event that your team will be short players on any given day, you should contact your Age Group Coordinator or the Secretary for assistance. When fill-ins are required it is necessary to seek a Diamond Creek Basketball Club registered member in the age group directly below yours. A player can only play one age group older than the age group they qualify for; they cannot and must not play for teams more than one level older than their eligible age group. For example an Under 12 player can fill-in for an Under 14 team but not an Under 16 team. A player may not fill in for a team more than two grades lower, for example an Under 12 A grade player cannot fill-in for an Under 14 D grade side but they can fill-in for and Under 14 C grade side. l If a player does take the court for an age group they are ineligible for, the team s result for that game will be forfeited and their ladder points will be lost. More importantly, the player will not be protected by the DVBA Public Liability Insurance in the event of injury. Now that the grading period has concluded, any player must not play for more than one team in one age group. If a team in the age group one level older asks you to fill in, you become an official member of that team. If a different team in the older age group asks you to fill in at a later date, you are not able to fill in because the league will consider you an unregistered player and the team will forfeit their ladder points. An example of this is:- o Joanne usually plays for the Under 12-2 team o In round 7, Joanne fills in for the Under 14-3 team o Joanne cannot play for any other Under 14 team even if she only played one game for the 14-3 team Scoring Roster We ask that all parents share the task of scoring at their child s game. Your Coach or Team Manager will organise a roster to share the task fairly. If you would like further instruction, please contact either your Team Manager or the Club Secretary. Joining late and qualification for finals For those teams in Under 12 and above, there will be a finals series at the end of the season. In order to qualify to play finals, your players must have played seven games. If you think you may be short of players at finals time for one reason or another, please consider arranging for a younger player to fill in on enough occasions to qualify. No new players can be added to a team after the 7 th last game of the season. The DVBA website has the capacity to show statistics for games played, if you are unsure how to access this information, contact the Secretary. In the case of injury, we can request an exemption with the DVBA however a Dr s certificate must be provided. This request should be done one or two weeks after the injury occurs and not at the end of the season when finals are approaching.

9 Page 9 Club Information Team Bench The Team Bench is a space reserved for the players, the coach and the assistant coach. At no time should any parent or spectator sit on or behind the team bench unless invited to do so by the coach. The younger players, in particular, are easily distracted so it is important that the coach is able to gain their full attention. Season name & new DVBA By-Laws The DVBA has changed the name of the seasons to Autumn and Spring in an attempt to minimise confusion. The season we are now in is called Autumn 2015 instead of Winter The DVBA has also released updated By-Laws that are now in effect. Some of the relevant changes are shown below:- - Zone defence is strongly discouraged for Under 8 s to Under 12 s. - Sin Bin for Under 12 through to 20 & under if a technical foul or unsportsmanlike foul is called on a player, they must leave the court for five minutes. They can be replaced by a substitute but they cannot take the court until five minutes of playing time has elapsed. - Under 20 s has been changed to 20 & Under Social media bullying Unfortunately the use of social media for bullying and anti-social behaviour is becoming more prevalent in our society. The Diamond Creek Basketball Club will not tolerate any player, official, coach, committee member or any other person involved with our club to be the target of this kind of unpleasant conduct. In fact, Basketball Victoria treat this as such an important matter, they are prepared to deal with these cases by report and then a Tribunal. Tribunal sanctions can include suspension for a limited time, up to and including a lifetime suspension. The Basketball Victoria policy is below for your reference. 19July2010 All Basketball Participants Social Networking Sites Basketball Victoria is concerned at the increasing number of complaints being made about the use offacebook, Twitter, YouTube and other social networking sites by people involved in basketball, forunacceptable content. We have seen examples where the sites have been used to bully other basketballers, to criticise referees and to make racist or sexist remarks about other participants. This sort of behaviour is totally unacceptable in basketball and will not be tolerated. Many of the remarks are being made with the posters believing that because those remarks can only be seen by people they have accepted as friends on their pages, they will not be made public. However, fortunately, there are enough decent people around who bring this behaviour to the attention ofbasketball Clubs or Associations or Basketball Victoria. This occurs even when the posts are made byfriends because those people recognise the harm and distress this sort of behaviour cangenerate. Under Basketball Victoria s Tribunal By -laws and Member Protection By-laws, behaviour whichis unacceptablecan bebrought tothe Tribunal, evenifit didn t occuronthe basketballcourt. Aslongas the incident is basketball related, the Tribunal can deal with it. A number of Facebook issues have already been dealt with by the Tribunal and other hearings are pending. Basketball Victoria will have no hesitation in reporting to the Tribunal incidents who misuse such sites if it relates to basketball. Pleasebe mindful of otherbasketball participants anddon t place yourselfat risk of finding yourself reported to the Tribunal, as has happened to several people already. 10 Page 10 Hi Creekers, Meet the Age Group Co-ordinators Girls There are still some spots available in teams so if you know anyone who is interested please point them in the right direction. Age group, no of teams, coach and available spots are as follows: Under 8-1 Coach- David Hoffman 1 spot available Under 8-2 Coach- Grace Cogdell Full Under 10-1 Coach - Stephen Martorella 2 spots available Under 10-2 Coach Melissa Burgoyne 2 spots available Under 12-1 Coach Ryan Gook Full Under 12-2 Coach Jason Tierney Full Under 14-1 Coach Chris Downing 1 spot available Under 14-2 Coach Greg Farrelly 1 spot available Under 16-1 Coach - Melissa Burgoyne 1 spot available Under 16-2 Coach Melissa Burgoyne 2 spots available Under 18-1 Coach - David Williams 3 spots available Welcome to all of our girls for the Autumn season For those that have come to the club as new players, we welcome you and your families. We have reached the end of the grading phase for the 11 girls teams. We are seeing some positive results with teams coming together nicely. A credit to our coaches across the board. We will hopefully continue this trend throughout the rest of the season. For those who may not know, this season the DVBA was looking to include girls 20 and under into the competition. Whilst Diamond Creek Basketball Club would have been able to fill two sides for the 20 s and under, the majority of other clubs were unable to field sides. Hopefully this will change next season!!! From a co-ordination point, we ask that parents support their team managers by informing them of any absences for any reason. This will allow them to obtain fill ins. Again welcome and go Creekers! Stephen Martorella Girls Coordinator Chris Downing - Girls Coordinator

11 Page 11 Meet the Age Group Co-ordinators Boys U8 & U10 Age Group Hi Creekers, It is great to see all the boys new and returning to the Creekers to play in the Autumn 2015 season. We have two U8 s and four U10 s teams this season and I have my fingers crossed that you all do well. Just remember that both the U8 s and U10 s regrade every 5 weeks so even if you are winning or losing every week you should be moved to another grade where you should have a better challenge. The U8 s this season got off to a different start this year with a special season opener at Mill Park. From all reports everyone who went had a good time so if you missed out, keep your fingers crossed that the DVBA do it again next season. I hope to get to at least a few of each of the teams games during the season and will be at the stadium during training each Tuesday so if you want to ask me anything or just say hello, please do so. At the end of the day my aim is to ensure that all the boys are enjoying their basketball and developing as players as their own pace. If anyone has any problems or issues that they would like to discuss, please do not hesistate to , text or ring me on or james.fowler@smardt.com. Good Luck, Jamie Fowler - Boys Under 8 & 10s Coordinator
