JOHN D. HURD President Welcome to an exciting new era of Cabrillo College men s basketball under the leadership of Coach Tony Marcopulos. Since Tony arrived at Cabrillo a little more than 3 years ago, I have been impressed with his level of expertise and integrity as well as his dedication to the success of each member of his team, both as a student and as a player. I am confident that the passion and work ethic demonstrated by Coach Marcopulos and our student-athletes signals a new era of excellence and success for the Cabrillo Men s Basketball Program. Go Seahawks! DALE MURRAY Director of Athletics Welcome to Cabrillo College Men s Basketball. The schedule brings together some of the best basketball teams and players in Northern California. All of the athletes have combined academic and athletic talent to bring you a level of competition that exemplifies quality achievement under expert leadership. Enjoy the intensity of the competition and keep in mind that Cabrillo College encourages both the participants and spectators to conduct themselves in the true spirit of sportsmanship.

T HE CABRILLO BASKETBALL EXPERIENCE Cabrillo head basketball coach Tony Marcopulos was hired to lead the Seahawk program on April 3, In the short time since, he has made significant progress in building a foundation for both present and future success. Prior to beginning his 4th season, he discussed his thoughts regarding Cabrillo College, his team, his program and just what can be expected: Q: WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER TO BE SOME OF THE STRENGTHS OF THIS COLLEGE? MARCOPULOS: "The location of the campus and its close proximity to the beach obviously stand out as tremendous assets to this college. Cabrillo, as an institution of higher education, is one of the truly outstanding community colleges in the state of California. We have instructors here that are committed to the growth and development of students. Lastly, Cabrillo is the kind of place where a student-athlete can get an outstanding two-year education at an affordable cost, play intercollegiate athletics and enjoy college social life in one of the most beautiful areas of the country. Q: HOW WOULD YOU ASSESS YOUR FIRST 3 YEARS AS CABRILLO S HEAD COACH? MARCOPULOS: "I'm proud of what we have been able to build here in just three years. It has been extremely difficult at times and very frustrating. However, I understood what it would take to turn the program around and I m aware of what work remains. Our appearance in the regional final game last year was a clear indication that we are on the right track. The new basketball team room, the new uniforms, and the recent addition of two new assistant coaches have all been important parts of our improvement process. We have also had a lot of success raising money for the program. That is very important factor when you consider the budget crisis that all California Community Colleges have found themselves in. Our fund-raising efforts have enabled us to provide more for our student-athletes than other programs might be able to. The accomplishment I'm most pleased with (and have been most concerned with since my arrival in 2000) has been the academic success of our athletes. Cabrillo College is not your typical Community College. This institution has a demanding faculty and is difficult academically. We rank in the top 10 in the state (109 Community Colleges in CA.) in terms of transferability. Having said that, our team G.P.A. for the school year was 3.1. These numbers rank among the best in the country at any level. Our athletes are performing in class and that is very important to me. Overall I'm pleased but there is a lot of work to get done and if you ask any of our players, they will tell you that I'm not very patient." Q: WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST STRENGTHS OF THE BASKETBALL PROGRAM? MARCOPULOS: "Our commitment to the development of our players is easily our biggest strength. Studentathletes in this program will be challenged to excel in the classroom as well as on the basketball court. We make every effort to ensure that our players receive the best college basketball experience possible. Q: WHAT CAN INCOMING STUDENT-ATHLETES EXPECT FROM CABRILLO? MARCOPULOS: "We have set high standards that must be maintained. Our players will be expected to go to class everyday. They can expect to get in tremendous physical condition. They can count on being coached each and every day. We will demand a high level of achievement and excellence. Q: WHERE DOES CABRILLO RATE AMONG COAST CONFERENCE CONTENDERS? MARCOPULOS: "Our conference is one of the best in the state. The Coast Conference was the only conference in Northern California to have 3 twenty win teams in The Coast Conference also placed four teams in regional final games last year. While San Jose City, West Valley, and Hartnell have long traditions of basketball excellence, we (Cabrillo) have established ourselves as a team to be concerned with and taken seriously. However, we are still in the middle of the pack looking to move up quickly."

H EAD COACH TONY MARCOPULOS Tony Marcopulos, who was hired by Cabrillo on April 3, 2000, sees a bright future for the Seahawk basketball program. His years of experience, first as a player and then as a NCAA Div. I assistant coach, have prepared him for the task ahead: turning a losing program for the last two decades into a winner. Coach Marcopulos has had first hand experience in building a basketball program. As a player and coach He knows the important role community colleges play in the development of young athletes. This knowledge, combined with his understanding of the needs and demands of Div. I programs across the country, has made him an excellent addition to Cabrillo s athletic program and an invaluable asset to the men he will coach SEASON - The season was a breakthrough season for the Seahawks. For the first time in California State tournament history, the 28th seeded Seahawks advanced to the Regional Final with upset wins over 5th seed Feather River College and 12th seed Skyline College. The Seahawks finished with an overall record of 15-18, the most Cabrillo wins since Their win over San Jose City College was the first since All four sophomores have continued their education and Basketball careers at four year institutions. On the academic side, the team s yearend GPA was SEASON - For the first time in school history the Seahawks made the playoffs in back to back seasons. The 17 wins in the last two seasons are more wins than the previous 5 seasons combined. Myree Bowden was selected First team All-Conference. The first time a Cabrillo College player has done that in over 15 years. Bowden also signed (early) with the University of the Pacific. The first time a Cabrillo College player has signed a Div. 1 scholarship in over 25 years SEASON - In his first campaign as head coach of the Seahawks ( ), Coach Marcopulos was able to lead Cabrillo into the playoffs for the first time since Cabrillo s eight wins last season equaled the total of wins during the previous three seasons! PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE - In 1999, Marcopulos was tapped to help bolster a University of Portland basketball program after 11 seasons with the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California. At Pacific, Marcopulos was a full-time coach working directly with Head Coach Bob Thomason. When Marcopulos joined Thomason in Stockton, UOP had enjoyed only one winning season during the previous nine years. That quickly changed. During the next eleven years Pacific had eight winning seasons. Those 11 seasons included many highlights; two separate 16 game winning streaks ( ), the 1997 Big West conference championship, the 1998 Big West Western Division championship, the school's first NCAA tournament appearance in almost 20 years (1997), the school's first ever NIT tournament appearance (1998), and the second longest home court winning streak in the country behind Kansas at 32 in a row (1998). Also in that span the Tigers had over a 90% graduation rate. Perhaps Marcopulos most publicized achievement at Pacific was his successful work with a big and athletic, but inexperienced and untutored Nigerian named Michael Olowokandi. At 7-1 and 265 pounds, the Pacific staff had a lot to work with but very little time to produce a successful basketball player. After two years of hard work and a commitment to basketball fundamentals, the Los Angeles Clippers selected Olowokandi with the first overall pick in the 1998 NBA draft (Michael signed with the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2003). Sports Illustrated s cover story opened with Marcopulos startling first phone conversation with the future NBA draft pick and the trials and tribulations associated with the development of a young man with so much potential. PLAYING CAREER - Marcopulos, now 39 years old, is a native of the Bay Area who attended Amador Valley High School in Pleasanton. As a point guard, he led the Dons to four league championships and a four-year record of Upon graduating high school in 1982, Marcopulos went on to Columbia Junior College in Columbia, California (82-84) where he played for Bob Thomason and recorded seasons of and He then accepted a basketball scholarship to attend Carroll College in Helena, Montana before following Coach Thomason to California State University, Stanislaus (Turlock, CA) where he helped lead the team to a conference title and a Division III NCAA tournament berth in EDUCATION - Marcopulos received his undergraduate degree in Physical Education from Stanislaus State University. He later earned a Masters of Arts degree in Teaching (Physical Education) and a secondary school teaching credential (Physical Education) from the University of the Pacific in A member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches, Tony and his wife Lori live in Scotts Valley.

Season Preview An Interview with Head Coach Tony Marcopulos Q: How do you feel about how the season went? Marcopulos : "Good and bad. Good because I feel that, in many ways, the program made a huge step forward. The most obvious indication of that being the way that we finished the season, playing for a chance to go to the final eight in San Diego. Bad because we missed out on the opportunity to advance further. You just never know when you might get the chance again. I felt very badly for the sophomores of that team. They worked so hard and wanted to be successful." Q: How will this year s team build on last season s strong finish? Marcopulos: "The way we finished last season proves that the goals that we have established here are very much attainable. Not only can we compete with the best teams in the state, but we can also beat the best in the state when the stakes are highest. This year s group will have to be held to that standard as well." Q: What can fans expect from the returning players this season? Marcopulos: "First of all, they are all better players now. They are stronger and have improved and added to their skill level. They all have worked very hard since the conclusion of last year and that is very evident. Vince Inglima, Brandon Schuyler, and Dylan Marvin have all done a great job." Q: What can fans expect from the new players this season? Marcopulos: "I m excited about our new guys. We will be deeper than we have in the past and maybe more athletic than in the past. It will take awhile for them to adjust to the system of basketball we play and to college life in general. After all those adjustments I think we all will be pleasantly surprised with the freshmen." Q: What should Cabrillo fans look forward to this coming season? Marcopulos: "Hopefully a continued effort to improve on what we did last year in all areas. Academically, we had a team GPA of 3.1 and I insist that it stay in that area. Athletically, we want to compete for the conference title and play for the state championship. All of our efforts are with those goals in mind." Q: What has happened since last season to improve Cabrillo Basketball? Marcopulos: "The addition of Matt Swagerty as Assistant Coach is a significant step. Also, getting Derek Olson back involved with the program as Director of Basketball Operations as been a huge improvement."

B ASKETBALL STAFF MATT SWAGERTY ASSISTANT COACH 1ST YEAR WESTERN WASHINGTON, 1994 Coach Swagerty is beginning his first season as a Seahawk in His primary responsibilities will be to assist Coach Marcopulos with recruiting, teaching the defense, and working with the post players. Matt brings a wealth of talent and experience to Cabrillo College. For the past five seasons Coach Swagerty has been at the helm of the Aptos High School Boy s Basketball Program. In 2000 his Varsity Team won the SCCAL Championship, the school s first championship in 15 years. Before his stay at AHS Coach Swagerty spent his time in the college ranks. He began his career at Western Washington University (NCAA Division II) where he eventually became the Head Assistant Coach, in charge of recruiting and defense. Next, he moved on to NAIA Division I powerhouse, Azusa Pacific University, where he was head of scouting and helped lead them to a birth in the NAIA Division I Sweet 16. Finally, in his last job before going to Aptos High, Coach Swagerty was the Head Men s Basketball Coach at Bethany College (NAIA Division II). In the 1996/97 season, he directed Bethany to a second place finish in the highly competitive California Pacific Conference. Matt is a 10 year member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches. Matt was an All-League basketball and baseball player at King s High School, in Seattle, Washington. He went on to play basketball at Western Washington University (Bellingham, WA), where he helped the Vikings to the playoffs for three consecutive years. Coach Swagerty sees basketball as a median for teaching young people how to live a better life. He is also one of the best teachers of basketball fundamentals in the area, having coached under several great college coaches, run his own college and high school programs, and having a former college basketball coach and professional basketball player as a father. His father, Keith Swagerty, was an All-American player at University of the Pacific (Coach Marcopulos long-time home), a professional player in the American Basketball Association (ABA) for Houston and Kentucky, and the Head Basketball Coach at Seattle Pacific University (NCAA DII). Cabrillo head coach Tony Marcopulos noted his excitement about having Coach Swagerty on board by saying, I have known Coach Swagerty for quite a while through his father, who was one of the best players to ever play at the University of the Pacific. He will bring our program experience and know-how very rarely granted to a Community College program by an assistant. I feel that Matt s addition will help make our basketball program one of the elite programs in the state. Coach Swagerty related his appreciation about the opportunity to work with Coach Marcopulos by saying, This is a tremendous opportunity for me to learn from a coach with 12 years of Division I experience, 11 of them at my father s alma mater. I have known Coach Marcopulos for 10 years. He has immersed himself in the game of basketball, becoming a strategic technician and an expert in team building. I will definitely become a better coach as a result of my experience working with him. I look forward to working with Coach Marcopulos in an effort to provide the Santa Cruz area with one of the most consistently successful community college basketball programs in the state.
