YRC NEWSLETTER MAY - JUNE 2016 IN THIS EDITION President s Corner New Ranges Juniors Program Rifle Gong Match Silouette Range Map Indoor Pistol Gallery PRESIDENT S CORNER Roman Gillitzer, Club President WE APPRECIATE OUR GREAT MEMBERS! We need to pull together on an important issue. Discussion at the June meeting on the steel plate damage from 50 BMG armor piercing rounds (see photos in this Newsletter) had everyone there extremely upset. Heavy money cost to the club. Many want to ban them from use at the club if this keeps up. Probably being done by one rogue shooter/member. Please be observant about this, and immediately report any noticed damage to any Director. Thank you!. PLINKING RANGE This range, to the left of the Clubhouse, is 25 yards deep. It will be for the use of rimfire firearms only--no CENTERFIRE firearms allowed--you can bring water bottles, cans, etc., for targets if desired. They must be placed against the back berm. Please clean up after yourself. NO GLASS. Bench(es), target holders, rubber targets, Bianchi racks will be installed. You may only go forward of the firing line to shoot SOFT targets. Steel must be shot from BEHIND the bench(es) at the firing line. There will be target stands at 25, 50, & 70 yards. Benches & tables will be installed, as well. CENTERFIRE PISTOL RANGE This is the northern most range of the yards deep. This range is NOT a plinking range. Bottleneck caliber rifles are NOT ALLOWED on this range, only straight-walled pistol calibers. There will be a Bianchi rack, resettable steel paddle targets, reactive rubber targets, target stands, and other steel targets. These will be placed at various distances from the firing line. All firing must be done from behind the benches on the firing line. Tables will also be installed. These are the current rules governing these 3 ranges. They will be reviewed periodically & may change as time goes. The Hydo seeding is finished. We have placed orange cones in front of the 3 new ranges to keep members from driving into them. The ranges are open for shooting, just walk in & go for it! MULTI-USE RANGE This is the center range--70 yards deep. It is NOT a plinking range. This range will be used for training,.22 rimfire competition, firing of shotguns, pistols, & is intended for AR style rifles. NO BOTTLENECK MAGNUMS, or straight-walled HEAVY MAGNUMS such as.458 Winc., will be allowed on this range. Target stands will be at 25, 50, & 70 yards. Benches & tables will be installed as well. NEW RANGES At this time the Board is looking for a couple of members to take the helm for the Multi-use Range & for the Plinking Range. If you would be interested in doing this, please contact myself or Doug Schlepp. Applicants will go through a vetting process. We need members to come out to help do some clean up, grass trimming & mowing during the week of June 20th. We have mowers & weed eaters available to use for the grass work. Clean up will entail any area that needs it, ESPECIALLY the area around the Maintenance Garage. We want to sort out usable material for range use, possibly build a storage rack & haul scrap to the scrap dealer in town. The Garage also needs a good cleaning & straightening up, inside. Please contact Doug or if you can help. We will also be calling members from our work help list. Thanks, Roman WORK WEEK 1

NEVER TOO YOUNG TO ENJOY THE NEW PLINKING RANGE, AND LEARN HOW TO PAINT TARGETS Love the pink! More! More! USING NEW RANGES 3 new ranges have replaced &, and are already popular. The berms were seeded the week of May 9. See the new Range Map with close-up on page 4 and look for Ranges. 4A!,, &. Photos taken April 17. 2

JUNIORS PROGRAM Marlene Saunders, Director The YRC Juniors wrapped up their shooting season on Sunday, April 17 with a potluck picnic and awards. Shooters received medals and certificates recognizing their progress in the Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification Program as well as medals for the YRC Junior Finale. The Finale was a club tournament held to give competition experience to our junior shooters. JUNIOR WINNERS We want to thank several people who helped out tremendously throughout the season; Steve Albright, Mike Connolly, Debbie and David Charles, Bill Ball, Duff Gray, Marla Stremcha, and Lonn Saunders. Also, Ted and Lisa McFarland graciously donated hamburgers for our cookout. Brian Schuett was able to get a donation of shooting glasses from Home Depot for us. Big Sky State Games also gave items to be given for reminding everyone of the Games coming in July. Earlier in the year, we had received a donation of a new canvas shooting coat and pants, and shoes from Ralph Saunders former Air Force teammate, Bob Randle, who lives in Utah. In a month or so, we will be back in the groove with some practice for Big Sky State Games and will be reminding everyone of practice, and registration deadlines. Distinguished Expert awards pictured: l to r, Marley Ball, Nolan Stremcha, Dustin Gray, and Dalton Albright. Pictured separately is Charlie Morledge-Hampton with junior director, Marlene Saunders. Junior director, Dan Stremcha is handing out awards. Also, several juniors received awards but were not present. 3

BUFFALO RIFLE GONG MATCH 4/17/16 Bill Gloor, BP Director Once again, our shooting line, designed for 15 competitors, burst at the seams to accommodate the 22 competitors who came out to burn some power and swap true stories of their shooting prowess. As usual, the untrustworthy winds gave the spotters headaches. Still, some impressive scores were turned in, with 12 places determined by the tie-breaker rules. Great shooting, everyone! 6 MAY WAS BUSY AT RANGE 2A WHERE THE BUFFALO RIFLE GUNNERS SHOOT Bill Gloor, BP Director A work day on the 14th saw the safety berm between Ranges 2A & 2B raised and extended, the shooting line was extended 17 feet, the westside of the club grounds were mowed, berms were groomed with shovels and rakes, the 3 farthest target stands were drilled into solid rock, a berm was added for an eighth target, holes were filled in on a few targets, and the 692 buffalo target had welding-surgery to replace a horn and repair a.50 caliber bullet hole. Whew! Throughout the day 9 men ate 64 pancake-size cookies; an indication of the effort it took to complete the work not to mention the fuel used by 2 skid-steers, a tractor, dump trailer and the club s bat wing mower. My thanks all who helped make the day a success. surgery 50 cal bullet hole surgery horn repair BUFFALO RIFLE GONG MATCH 5/15/16 Bill Gloor, BP Director Setting target stands in bedrock On the 15th, there were many compliments made about the spruced up gong range. 17 shooters enjoyed the elbow room afforded by the improved shooting line. The clean berms helped the marksmen turn in some outstanding scores. Paul Dowel, of Livingston, won the match with a score of 32 while club member George Hudak aced the offhand. Future events: There will be no gong matches in June & July in deference to the Quigley and State Games. Gong matches will resume in August. BPCR Silhouette matches planned for May 29 and July 31 have been cancelled. 6 MAY MATCH scores Name Class 692 yard 631 yard Square 502 yard 452 yard 388 yard 303 yard "Skinnie Minnie" 189 yard Offhand Paul Dowell Iron George Hudak Iron Dan Walker Iron Ron Vanden Brink Iron Bob Sprague Iron Dave Hoagland Iron Dick Bills Iron Stephen Toth Iron Craig Baumgastuer Iron Clint Stagner Iron Bob Engelbach Iron Wyatt Sims Iron Kevin Homewood Iron Walt Tadsen Iron Mike Gams Iron Bill Gloor Scope George Grossi Scope Score

Shooting went swiftly with the addition of an additional set of targets that allowed 2 shooters at each station. 2B Steve said, How can I hit em if I can t see em? ATTENTION... 9 PLEASE: PUT TARGETS IN CENTER. This target was installed at the top of rail, in front of 2x4 support, causing shots to ruin target support. Good thing the shooter wasn t good enough to hit the target more times! Indoor Pistol Lew Muller, Director Montana State Indoor Pistol Championships were held at the Yellowstone Rifle Club indoor range March 16. Most years see the championships held in more than one location in the state, but this year it was all at the YRC. Twelve shooters competed in three disciplines Precision (NRA Bullseye), International Standard Pistol, and International Air Pistol. The winner of the Precision championship and new State Champion is Don Strom from Whitehall. Don shot x in his winning effort. 1st Master is Jimmy Sutton shooting x; 1st Expert Steven Waddell, Sheridan, Wyoming posting x; Wes Muller 1st Sharpshooter with x; and rounding it out is David Jessen, Belgrade shooting 787-7x for 1st Marksman honors. Our Montana Lady Champion is Diane Vandiviere of Huntley. The YRC Pistol team consisted of Gary Van Haele, Lew Muller, Jimmy Sutton, and Roman Gillitzer. They shot a combined score of x to beat out the MR&PA team Don Strom, Erv Rotering, David Jessen, and Eric Gillitzer, x being their score. Jimmy Sutton is the new International Standard Pistol champion shooting 542. Gary Van Haele of Hysham took 1st Master with 533, 1st Expert is Roman Gillitzer also firing 533, and first Marksman is Steven Waddell, 494. The high lady is again Diane Vandiviere. Lew Muller defended his State International Air Pistol title this year shooting 525-3c. Close behind was his son, 1st Sharpshooter, Wes Muller posting 522-7c. Steve Waddell is 1st Marksman firing 501-5c. Congratulations to our new State Champions Don Strom, Jimmy Sutton, Lew Muller and Diane Vandiviere.
