10 FROG SPECIAL TEAMS NOTES TURPIN TIME 4Because he missed four games due to injury, KaVontae Turpin does not qualify for listing among NCAA statistical leaders. 4If he had the number of games played to qualify, Turpin would be second in the nation in punt returns with his average of 17.8 yards while ranking eighth in kickoff returns with a 28.8 mark. 4Turpin s 28.8 average on kickoff returns is the highest by a Horned Frog since All-American Greg McCoy had a 30.6 mark in Prior to his injury, Turpin was leading the NCAA in punt returns (28.8 yards) and was one of just two players nationally (Darius Phillips, Western Michigan) to rank in the top 10 in punt returns and kickoff returns. Turpin was eighth in kickoff returns (32.8 yards). 4Through two games, before the injury, Turpin topped the nation in all-purpose yards at per game. He then left the week three Iowa State contest early due to injury. 4After having one kickoff return for 28 yards late in the Texas Tech game, Turpin returned to his regular duties as TCU s primary kickoff and punt returner at Baylor. 4Turpin had three kickoff returns for 99 yards (33.0 average), including a 46-yard effort on his first attempt of the game versus the Bears. 4Turpin s career-long 64-yard kickoff return against Arkansas, with less than a minute to play in regulation, set up a potential game-winning field goal. 4Turpin s 81-yard second-quarter punt return for a touchdown against South Dakota State was the second of his career. He had a 49-yard punt return for a score versus Kansas last season. 4Turpin s 81-yard effort tied for the sixth-longest punt return in TCU history. CARTER STADIUM / FORT WORTH, TEXAS SOUTH DAKOTA ST. 41 NO. 13 TCU 59 FORT WORTH, Texas - Kenny Hill accounted for 484 yards of offense and five touchdowns and KaVontae Turpin sparked the 13th-ranked Horned Frogs with an 81-yard punt return in a victory over South Dakota State. It was TCU s 15th straight home-opening win. Hill was 33 of 49 for 439 yards with two touchdown passes, ran for three scores and converted a critical third down with a 13-yard scramble while the Horned Frogs were up four points in the fourth quarter. That drive ended on a 46-yard scoring pass to Taj Williams for a lead. Williams, who had 11 catches for 158 yards, made the grab after the ball deflected several yards forward off the hands of TCU receiver Desmon White and South Dakota State linebacker Dallas Brown. Turpin started the comeback from the surprising second-quarter deficit with his return, leading the Horned Frogs to their 14th straight home win, third in the nation behind Florida State (21) and Clemson (16). The 5-foot-9 speedster tied a career-high with seven receptions while adding a 33-yard run and finishing with 177 all-purpose yards. TCU totaled 662 yards of offense and converted 11 of 15 third-down attempts. Allen led the Razorbacks (2-0) to the tying score in the final two minutes of regulation, throwing a touchdown pass to Keon Hatcher and then catching the tying two-point conversion from the receiver with 1:03 remaining. The Horned Frogs (1-1) rallied from 13 down in the fourth quarter to take a lead, but couldn t hang on as their 14-game home winning streak ended in the first meeting of these former Southwest Conference rivals since TCU s Kenny Hill threw for 377 yards and an overtime TD to Taj Williams and also had 93 yards rushing and two scores. But he couldn t get the Horned Frogs in the end zone in the second OT, and they settled for Ryan Graf s 37-yard field goal. KaVontae Turpin set up both of TCU s fourth-quarter touchdowns with long catches, including on the go-ahead drive from midfield after he added nearly 25 yards on a dazzling punt return when he spun out of several tackles while somehow keeping both knees off the ground. After the Razorbacks got even, Turpin returned the kickoff 64 yards, but Arkansas Dan Skipper blocked Graf s 28-yard field goal try with 10 seconds remaining. On third-and-12 in its own territory, Kenny Hill scrambled and was stripped of the ball but no whistle was blown. Hill picked up the ball and darted around the field for a gain of 34 yards. A facemask penalty added 15 extra yards to put TCU in scoring position. Two plays later, Hill connected with Jaelan Austin for the touchdown to pull the Horned Frogs within With under four minutes remaining, TCU pieced together a 59-yard drive capped by a Brandon Hatfield 34-yard field goal to take a lead with 1:21 to play. Kansas had 81 seconds to make something happen. Willis was sacked on back-to-back plays by Josh Carraway to put Kansas at third-and-23 on its 30-yard line. Willis avoided getting sacked for a third straight down and ran out of bounds. On fourth down, Willis threw the ball to Sims, who lateraled it to Bobby Hartzog for a first down in TCU territory. TCU forced the second overtime on Desmon White s incredible 25-yard TD catch from backup quarterback Foster Sawyer. White caught the pass despite having a defender on his hip, and secured the ball against his helmet to complete the score. The play stood after officials did a replay review of the catch. The Horned Frogs had the ball to start the second overtime. But Brandon Hatfield, not related to the Texas Tech kicker, missed a 40-yard field goal attempt. The previous two times the teams met in Fort Worth, they combined for 109 points both times. Tech won in triple overtime in 2012, and TCU broke Big 12 and school records in an win two years ago. TCU 62 NO. 13 BAYLOR 22 WACO, Texas - Kyle Hicks ran for a career-high 192 yards and five touchdowns and TCU beat 13th-ranked Baylor The points scored for TCU and its margin of victory set school records in the 112-game series history with Baylor. Hicks five TDs were one short of LaDainian Tomlinson s TCU mark set in November 1999, when he ran for 406 yards against UTEP in what was then the single-game major college record. Both teams scored touchdowns in the first minute of the game. After Seth Russell threw an 81-yard TD pass to Ishmael Zamora on the second play of the contest, Kenny Hill hit Taj Williams for a 37-yard score on TCU s second snap of the ensuing series. That was the first of 31 consecutive points for the Horned Frogs, including two touchdowns in seven seconds, on their way to handing Baylor its most lopsided loss at home since a 62-0 defeat to Texas 11 years ago. Ranthony Texada returned an interception 28 yards for a score to make it 31-7 early in the second quarter. That came right after Hicks spun away from two tacklers and broke free from another while weaving through defenders for a 22-yard TD run on a fourth-and-2 play.
