These two teams opened e season last night in Kamloops wi e Blazers earning a 9-2 win. Jake Kryski and Kole Lind each scored once and added an assist in e setback. If you want to row preseason games into e mix, ese two BC rivals will have played each oer 13 times before e regular season ends. Did I mention ey last faced one anoer in an epic seven game opening round playoff series in e 2016 post season? The Rockets won at affair 4 games to 3 wi four of e games being decided by a single goal. Last season, e Rockets were in eight regular season meetings against Kamloops, but 7 of ose 8 games were again decided by one goal. The Rockets are in e last five seasons against Kamloops including winning 16 of eir last 20 regular season games at Prospera Place. Last season e Rockets opened e regular season against Kamloops, winning opening night (4-3) before earning a victory (7-3) a night later in Kamloops. After just one year on e job, Brad Ralph parted ways wi e team on May 9. Then on July 6, Jason Smi was hired as Brad Ralph s replacement. Smi is e Rockets four coach in e last four years. Smi, who retired September 2, 2009, played 16 seasons in e NHL before joining e coaching staff of e NHL s Ottawa Senators, a role Smi has held for e last four seasons. Smi won a gold medal for Canada at e World Junior Hockey Championships in 1993 and was named e WHL Defenceman of e Year at same season. Winds of Change: The Kelowna Rockets have lost ree of eir top four scorers from last season. Tyson Baillie (95 pts.), Justin Kirkland (67 pts.) and Cole Linaker (50 pts.) are no longer wi e team. There is an outside chance Kirkland could return if he fails to stick wi Nashville s AHL affiliate. Goaltender Jackson Whistle also graduated. Joe Gatenby was traded to Kamloops for Jake Kryski on August 18. The Rockets return 19 players from last season s team. The only oer change saw Adam Brown join e team as a part time coach. The Rockets return 17 players from last year s roster and have 18 WHL veterans on eir team. Up front, Nick Merkley and Dillon Dube are eir most dynamic players. Bo could be missing is weekend due to NHL camps. Tomas Soustal and Calvin Thurkauf are a pair of big-bodied import players at play in a top six role wi e hockey club. Jake Kryski, an 18-year-old forward acquired from e Blazers, should be a player to watch. Rodney Souam, Tanner Wishnowski, Riley Stadel and Tate Coughlin should add some grit to eir lineup.
