4 President s Report 2017 has been a noteworthy season for MUHC, being the first time since 2004 that we have had teams in both the men s and women s top grade at the same time (and the first time since the late 90s that both teams have stayed there). It has taken a lot of hard work from coaches, managers, and players in building the competitiveness of the club to be able to achieve this, and things are looking very positive for continued improvement here over the coming years. Results were generally positive: Of our 19 teams, 8 made finals, with three grand finalists and one premiership (Women s Pennant C), and no teams have been relegated. Particularly positive were the competitive efforts of Women s Pennant A and Women s Reserves in their first seasons up a grade, and Men s Reserves making finals in their second season up. Men s Premier League continued their rapid improvement as well, missing finals by only two points and claiming some great wins along the way. This is a credit to the coaching of Phil Burrows, but also the hard work and application of all the top squad players. And congratulations must go to Oscar Wookey for winning the Fin McNab Award as MVP of the Men s Premier League competition with a massive 33 votes (from 20 games)! Phil and the club have also agreed to an extension to his appointment, keeping him at the club for an extra two years through to He s done an amazing job in a short time here so far, and it s exciting to be able to continue this moving forward. For Women s Premier League the first year up was a mixed and challenging experience, but with excellent effort and commitment all season long regardless, and unlucky not to get some more points from competitive performances. Unfortunately the coaching appointment ended up not being the right fit, but a big thanks to all who assisted with coaching and managing this team throughout the year. Next season is however already looking in a good position, and hopefully we can see the same second-year improvement for WPL that MPL showed was possible in The PL/PLR teams debuted new playing tops this year throwbacks to our original uniform design (which continued to be used until a few decades ago). These look fantastic (surely the best in Victoria! Not that there s any bias in that opinion) and we are looking forward to rolling these out to the whole club for PL/PLR also moved entirely to the State Netball Hockey Centre this year for all training and matches, which continues to show dividends in improved skills and performance. The future use of SNHC potentially for more or all of the club will continue to need to be a serious consideration for the club and in discussions with the University regarding the future replacement of the MUHC pitch. Other tasks, projects, and challenges that will need attention next year include: continued vigilance for LEC compliance (especially with potentially changing requirements for our club); increased and improved alumni engagement; sponsorship; growing and upskilling our coaching and officiating ranks; and reviewing the club s org structure (what roles and positions are required, how they re organised, what the relationship between these roles and the Committee is, etc). 4

5 Social events also continued to go gangbusters this year, with great attendances throughout and another excellent Presentation Night. We also travelled up to Sydney after the season to play the Centenary Cup as the official opening of their long-awaited hockey pitch (the Bruce Prior Field), which was a fantastic event to be able to be a part of, and also a much-enjoyed trip by all. And it was our most competitive away showing to date, with results that could easily have gone the other way with a bit of luck. Hopefully we can turn the tables in Melbourne next year! Officiating saw another good season as well, with the days of teams having to fill lots of umpiring appointments over thanks to the outstanding work of Sarah Dennis and the cadre of committed club umpires and technical officials. Thank you to all those who helped out here it is a great service to your clubmates! All in all, MUHC is in a great position. But none of this is possible without the enormous contributions of all our administrators, volunteers, and officials. It is a huge amount of work to keep things running, and to ensure the club is doing everything it needs to and is continuing to improve and evolve. So thank you to everyone on the Committee and sub-committees and people filling other positions, to our coaches and managers, technical officials, umpires, and everyone else who s helped out in some capacity during the year. James Stewart President 5

6 Treasurer s Report Overall the club ran at a profit of $3,803 between the period of 1 October 2016 to 30 September This is down on prior years however it should be noted that this is not a true reflection due to the late timing of the Summer Hockey and presentation night in 2017 and the earlier timing of the summer hockey and presentation night in the 2016 year. This results in revenues in these areas being understated by a combined estimate of $8,000. Even with this estimated increase the overall profit decreased from 2016 this is for a number of reasons explained further below. Our largest revenue stream winter membership fees remained relatively consistent with a large portion of members electing to pay early and take advantage of early bird reduced fees. The fee price was not raised in 2017 and still remains considerably lower than other clubs. I believe this should be looked at going forward as a small increase fees across everyone could allow for further spending on equipment. As membership fees remained consistent expenses increased. This is majorly a result of the committee s approach to invest in elite performance during 2016 and again during The employment of Phil Burrows as a Director of Hockey coupled with a more significant investment in strength and conditioning and pre-season training. The committee also made the decision to invest in turf time for top squads to train twice a week and play at the SNHC. The cost of this was partially covered by MUS. The Hockey Victoria fees increased which is expected to continue. Team fines throughout the year again decreased which was pleasing to see however the aim should be for fines to be $0 every year. We were again very lucky to receive generous donations throughout the year of which have been used to cover the investment previously mentioned. The committee decided that the canteen would not be run during the 2017 winter season as this operation was not generating the club any profits. I believe this was a good decision and suggest the same approach is taken in the 2018 year. At the 30th of September 2017 the club is still in a very healthy cash position again being able to hold circa $200,000 in the Melbourne University Foundation account earning a return of $8,743 of interest for the year and a capital revaluation of $6,113. Whilst doing this the club still has $47,683 in its trading account and should not need to touch the foundation money in the coming year. However it should be noted at 30 June 2017 the club has combined liabilities of $19,662 for expenses incurred throughout the year. It should be noted that no official stocktake of equipment and uniforms was undertaken at 30 September 2017 so an indicative value has been used. The value is lower than prior years as a lot of the uniform on hand is old and obsolete. During 2017 we saw an increase in revenue and expense on uniforms as the new look uniform was introduced into the top squad. These were received well and the plan is to roll these out to the rest of the club therefore a further increase is predicted in An initial investment will be required to restock the uniforms so it is expected that expenses will be greater than the revenues earned in Uniforms are basically sold at cost so this is an area which will not produce profits but is essential to the club. 6

7 Financially the club is again in a strong position and I expect that the club will benefit from the increased expenditure in 2017 in the coming years. Tim Luscombe Treasurer 7
