2 MATCH REPORTS C Grade Women 5-1 win v Waratahs Red Once again the girls were not only given another extremely hot game time but were down five players including our goalie. In true Saints spirit everyone stepped up to get a team onto the field. Mel, Dee and Juanita played their first game for this team and Erin one of our u13 junior girls played her first senior game for the club. Due to the high number of players out, a number of players had to play out of position. Well done to Meredith and Carolyn who shared the duty of kicking fullback, a daunting role to take on and I admire their courage for the way they carried out this role. Minni also took up the role of sweeper and tackled everything that came through, while Monika went into left half and also tackled well and kept her opposition player out of the game. Erin in her first senior game was thrown right into the deep end running in both the inner positions throughout the game. I was very impressed with not only her skill level but also how well she listened and how hard she worked for the team. The first half was fairly even with both sides having a few chances but not converting any of them until late in the half when Dee crashed a penalty corner rebound into the backboard. Early in the second half Tahs equalised and so the pressure was on for the girls to lift their game. Emma and Karen started to get some nice hard hits to our inners in Dee, Jenny and Erin and they in turn linked up well with the strikers Mel, Nat, Juanita and Sue. All the strikers led well, trapped the ball and helped the team to gain control of the game. More chances started to be created and Dee slotted her second goal to get us back in front. This gave the team a second wind and we started to power over the top of the opposition. Our third goal was a Sue special, deflecting one of Emma s hard hits which had already taken a deflection off a Tahs stick to travel at pace at Sue s chest. Sue scored her second goal with a one timed strike and then Nat got on the score card when she ran onto a pass into the circle, controlled the ball and pushed it past the keeper. An excellent team effort in only our second game together. I was especially proud of how everyone worked so well together, often out of their comfort zone, to get the final result. BOG Cup was shared by Sue and Erin. We have a BYE next week so it would be good to see you all at training. LEIGH B Grade Men Saints 6 defeated Pints 3 Goal scorers: Hayzie 3, Evan 2, Brynn 1 BOG Cup: Hayzie The game against Pints presented a serious challenge with multiple starting lineup players either away or unavailable due to the Under 15 s and Under 18 tournaments. In the context of the season, it was also a vital game that we needed to win to setup our season well. We started off well again for the second week in a row and dominated play and and eventually scored two goals through short corners in the first half. However, in the period before half time, our marking and workrate dropped off and Pints came back to level the scores just before the break. The second half saw Sahoud play his best five minutes of hockey in the last year resulting in a goal to Hayzie. A short corner saw Hayzie convert with a nice flick and we moved further infront. There was again plenty of good passing of the ball and layoffs in the circle from our forwards for the second week in a row. Good hard running from Brynn and Evan kept the opposing defence well spread and greatly contributed to our success. Steve, Jamie and Peasey all had solid games through the halves and are shaping up as the core backbone of the team. A late lapse saw us let one goal in. However, a 6-3 win from a genuine danger game against a top 4 team was an excellent result that the entire team should be proud of. Justin Hockey Justin Hockey is his name, never played hockey before. Scored twice in his first game on Friday for Saints U16 boys.
3 MATCH REPORTS Under 16 Girls Under 13 Boys Friday night was our first of 2 games without any of our u15 or u18 representative players which meant we were left with only 5 players! On the bright side, a number of u13 girls accepted the offer to play up and have a run and for that we are very grateful. Thanks girls! We took on Commerce Pints and played very well. Our defenders marked their players and our outlets from the back were strong. Our midfield showed a high work rate and managed to pop a number of balls up to the strikers for breakaways. Casey scored a well-executed goal off a lovely pass from Erin and we began looking very threatening with a number of penalty corners but unfortunately we were unsuccessful in our conversions. An injury to goal keeper Danae at the end of the first half required someone to stand up and put on the helmet. New player Brianna bravely put her hand up and stepped in the box and did an outstanding job. Well done. Score: 3-1 loss to Commerce Jaimi-Lee A Grade Men The A men had a disappointing draw v Commerce last Sunday. We dominated for large periods of the match and played a really good second half to take the lead. Unfortunately we were not good enough to hold on to our lead. Stand out performance from Johnny who set up several promising circle penetrations. The Commerce keeper had an outstanding game for them. Johnny s game was rewarded with the players cup. The team needs now to focus on persisting in the heat of battle and continue there good start to the season. Shane Under 13 boys had a 3-0 win against commerce. With only 7 players they did extremely well on another hot day. They were able to maintain possession and throw some good passes which allowed the boys to run the ball into the circle. Thomas played well up the front while Dom held the back as keeper. Will also did a great job holding the midfield. Well done boys, hopefully the next few games should be a bit cooler by being a little earlier in the day. Peasey. Under 13 Girls The under 13 girls had a great game this week against commerce despite their coach being away. Our goal was to pass the ball more so we wouldn t have to run too much in the midday heat and the girls did this very well. The first half saw us getting tackled and losing the ball a bit because we were trying to take them on their forestick side. After a chat at half time, we made some changes and played smarter. Erin, Jade and Ella all played well to attack the circle and contribute to our five goals. Mandy and Kirsty held the backline and really made it hard for the other team to get through. A good effort from our new players who helped get the ball through the midfield. First timer Grace made an awesome tackle in our defensive circle preventing a shot on goal. Well done girls and apologies for calling you by the wrong names.
