Member fees remain $3.50 per round. On PUBLIC DAY, the 3rd Saturday afternoon of the month, non-member rates on the rifle and pistol ranges are $15 per visit per range effective May This does not apply to guests of members. The first 4 Gun Club Shoot was held on Sunday April 30 with about 20 members participating and we had 5 guest join various squads for a great day. The 4 gun event is very similar to a mini NSSA tournament and a great stepping stone for anyone that thinks they might be interested in shooting registered skeet. Actually all one really needs to shoot registered skeet is all 4 guns and a bunch of money. The C, D and E shooters bunched up to compete and shared the wealth with Ginny Warren taking the last 2 events and the High Overall (HOA). Typically, the HOA is decided with the 410. Jack Davis won AA, Mike Gershick won A, and Jeff Nekuza won B in the other HOA races. The shoot was a nice warm up for the Ivan Tabor the following week and attracted most of the club s registered shooters except one whom will remain nameless. 1

3 Recipe Corner Bobby s Best Catfish Croquettes Submitted by Dale Holder from Bobby Kubin at bobby-catfishing.com I developed this recipe for Catfish Croquettes based on another recipe I have used to make salmon patties. I guess I could have called them Catfish Patties, Catfish Cakes or even Catfish Fritters. Don t let the fancy name fool you. These are rib stickin, down home southern style comfort food, yet will please the most finicky appetite. They also make great appetizers. Now it s time to start cooking our Catfish Croquettes. Add the oil to a frying pan and heat to approximately 350 degrees. Use a spoon to place about 2 tablespoons of the mixture in your hand. Gently pat the mixture flat into a small patty. Then place the patty into the hot oil. Repeat with the remaining mixture. Fry the Catfish Croquettes on each side until golden brown, turning frequently to avoid overcooking. Next, place the Catfish Croquettes on a serving platter lined with paper towels to absorb any excess oil. Serve hot with a little ketchup or tartar sauce along with your family s favorite side dishes. Ingredients: 1 pound of catfish fillets Salt and Pepper to taste 2 cups course crushed Ritz Crackers 1 small onion (finely chopped) 1 egg (beaten) 1 teaspoon Tony Chachere s Creole Seasoning 1 tablespoon Kraft Mayonnaise 1/4 teaspoon Tabasco Chipotle Flavor Pepper Sauce 3/4 cup Vegetable Oil As with most fish recipes, I prefer to start out with fresh (never frozen) fish fillets, but frozen and thawed fish will work just fine with this one as well. There is just something about the wonderful flavor and sweetness you get from fresh caught fish vs. fish that has been frozen. Now let s get on with the cooking part. Place the fish fillets flat on a microwave safe plate or dish. Sprinkle the filets lightly with salt and pepper to taste. Microwave on high for 4 to 5 minutes or until fish turns white and flakes easily. Once the fish is cooked, flake the filets with a fork into a large mixing bowl. Large lumps of fish will give the dish a texture more like a lump style crab cake. Smaller flakes will result in a texture similar to a salmon patty. Now add the crushed Ritz Crackers, chopped onion, egg, Tony Chachere s Creole Seasoning, Mayonnaise, and Tabasco Sauce to the to the fish in the bowl and mix well. Jim Barrett, Mike Shuping and Kerry Williams APRIL SKEET SHOOT continued from page 1 Lunch was catered by our good friends at Bartleys BBQ and included Brisket, sausage, all the fixin s and dessert. The next club shoot is scheduled for Saturday, May 7th and we will start signing in around 9:30 and shooting at 10:00. Please be sure to RSVP so we can provide enough food and schedule the rotations and fields. Also let me know if you plan on bringing a guest to shoot with your squad. If I have more than 25 I will need to break the tournament into 2 rotations and will let everyone know when to be there. For more information or to RSVP, please call Robert Nicholas or at Skeet@GPGC.net 3

4 Spring Skeet League: Half-way begun, half-way done! It s the end of April already and the Spring Skeet League is half-way done, but the fun had only just begun! The causal mix of weather has meant good shooting each week, with record-breaking turn out, leading the teams to elbow throwing as they muscle their way up the scoreboard. Right now, Improved Cylinder (Don & Sandy Yeandle, Jay & Ginny Warren, Robert Nicholas) are in the lead with 10 out of a possible 12 points. Duh Boys (Ken & Russ Flippin, Glen Hughes, Dave Benge, James Wilson) are in second place with 8 points, and everyone else is basically tied for third meaning that everyone is still in the running. The top-ten individual scores also show how competitive it can get with Robert Nicholas, Jason Foshea and Will Chisum (both on Off Constantly) each dropping five or less birds over four nights. As we press forward into May I m sure we ll be feeling the heat, from the weather and the competitive. We ll be looking forward to handing out those awards at the end of the month. Safe Shooting to each of you! 6 GPGC Bullseye Pistol April 2011 April 7th: The weather was great, in the upper 70s and very little wind. Quite comfortable and we did not need the noisy fans. We had 12 competing tonight, and could have had 14 shooting if there were spaces to shoot. One chose just to watch. Jim Grabbe s nephew Ken Jone and Ken s wife Caryle arrived and Jim graciously stood down, helping Caryle who shot Jim s Browning Medalist. The priority to increase the size of the range from 12 to something larger is HERE and NOW. There were several shooters that normally shoot with us that weren t here for some reason or the other; if they had come, we d have had at least 6 more to shoot. 12 positions is just not enough! Winner was Mike Smith with 278 & 6Xs. Second was Clint Freeman with 274 & 2Xs. Third was Richarg Kolek with 270 and 6Xs. Congratulations guys! April 13th: We had 14 shooters show up and all shot. The weather was great. We had set up all positions with 2 targets per position in the practice phase so that if anyone would come - up to 24 - they could shoot. We shot in 2 relays with folks doubling up on positions 3 and 7. Dale Holder showed up with his scoped Ruger rifle cum pistol, ~ 12 barrel, and won with 284/10Xs. He shot 99 on timed fire and 98 on rapid fire! Wow! Jim Grabbe was high scorer with iron sights, shooting his Browning Medalist shooting a 271/1X for second place. Homer Garza was third, shooting a Ruger Mk III with a red dot sight, scoring a 266/5X. Meredith Turney took down the scores and made up the spreadsheet, below. Thanks, Meredith Unfortunately, I forgot to bring my camera so we have no pictures for tonights shoot. Dan Brown GPGC Board April 20th: We had 10 shooters then, and it was nice and cool, a bit drippy. Ed Dotson won with his scope sighted.45 shooting a 256 with 4Xs!!! He really has came up in the world! A couple of weeks ago he was bringing up the bottom! He shot with M ACP & a red dot scope that is mounted on the slide. The slide with the scope on it moves back a lot more slowly than a standard.45 ACP s slide. Adam Kolek was second with 253 with a long barreled 22 & a red dot scope. I was 3rd with a 250, and shot my 10 barreled Ruger Mk II, iron sights. 7 .22 cal. Pistol Silhouette Shoot April 2011 We had 7 shooters this Easter Saturday. The weather was great, with a light wind. Some yellow flowers were blooming on the range which were quite pretty. Donny Penwell won - high scorer shooting 58-1/2/60 using his Ruger 10/22 rifle - that Ruger reshaped as a pistol. It has a red dot scope. The 1/2 stood for a hanging chad, a steel target that was hit but fell down, but hung on by its base on the wood target frame. (Are we voting yet?) Michael Smith was high scorer with iron sights, 56/60, shooting a Browning with a long barrel. 9 Thanks! Special thanks to all the Club members and friends who helped with the registered shoot on April 9-10, These people cooked, cleaned, loaded houses, filled water cans, hauled trash and anything else that needed to be done. It makes the shoot very successful when everything goes as it was planned. Our guests also notice and were very vocal with their compliments and praise concerning the shoot and our facilities. A special thanks to Gene Wills for putting together the shrimp boil on Saturday night. The Saturday night social was a great success and we hope to make it a tradition for the Ivan Tabor. Also, thanks to Darin Mock, Will Chisum and Jason Foshea for setting up the snipe shoot. Unfortunately the shooters were too beat after fighting the wind all day to leave the tables piled with shrimp, sausage, potatoes and corn-on-the-cob. Again, thank you to the volunteers and hopefully you had a good time and will consider helping again in September at the World Warm-Up. 10 Ivan Tabor Memorial Open - Grand Prairie, Texas The most common remark around the score board at the Grand Prairie 2011 Ivan Tabor registered skeet tournament I would have had a great score if I hadn t missed all the high 1s. Saturday was hot and windy but Sunday was just windy and the milder temperature was all that was needed for Bruce Evans to shoot the only 100 in tournament to win the 20 gauge event. The 12 gauge event was won by James Speer beating Brandon Cade in the shoot-off both with 99s. Lunch was prepared by the volunteer gourmet chefs and special thanks to master chef Jean Beard for the grilled Randy Walhood marinated chicken. The wind and the heat did not let up in the afternoon as the 28 gauge targets were harsh. Tom Pavlack beat Gene Stewart and Charles Beard in the shoot-off for 28 gauge gun champ all with 97s. Gene Stewart, aka Dog was the sole winner of the Handicap option. That evening, the shooters were treated to a shrimp boil prepared by Gene Wills and several of the tournament volunteers plus a couple local shooters. The shrimp boil was a lot of fun and the concept of eating Cajun style (wit jur hans ) Robert Nicholas caught on quick. On Sunday the temperature was a little cooler and the amazing GPGC chefs had breakfast ready for the hard working tournament volunteers at the crack of dawn. After the other 49 shooters let Bruce win the 20 gauge event, lunch was catered by Bartley s BBQ complete with brisket, sausage and all the fixin s including dessert. The afternoon 410 event was challenging for most, however the wind did not bother James George as he posted a 98 to win the event. Mike Gerschick with a distant 94 was runner-up after beating Mike Schmitt and Jon McDonald in the shoot-off. The High Over All Champion was Brandon Cade with an Ivan Tabor record low 383. Brandon was so excited that he could win HOA with such a low score that he signed up himself and all his friends from Briley for the GPGC World Warm-Up in September. Gary Edwards was runner-up with a 382 followed by Jim Cervenka taking 3rd with a 379. Special thanks go out to all the GPGC volunteers that make these shoots possible. These folks donate their time to cook, load targets, run the computer, work the scoreboard, haul trash and set out water for the shooters. Our shoots are successful because of these people! As a final note, a special thanks to Randy Walhood for running the tournament for over most of the past two decades before turning over the skeet tournaments to me this year. Randy was instrumental in helping get things organized and setting the criteria to make the tournaments at the GPGC some of the best in Texas. Randy was presented with a new Caesar Guerini shotgun Saturday night for the hard work and time he had put into the club. This very nice gun is but a small token compared to all the work Randy has put into the club over the years. Robert Nicholas 10
