The largest of the NCAA s three divisions, Division III promotes a well-rounded approach to intercollegiate athletics participation. While Division III is best known by some for what it doesn t offer athletics scholarships it has plenty to offer. Knowing that Division III student-athletes play for the love of the game, the D-III experience is structured to help participants develop fully as students, athletes and citizens. Athletics participation at many of the 432 institutions that comprise Division III allows for student-athletes to succeed in the classroom and in athletics. That certainly is the case at Misericordia as student-athletes are often active in student government, residence life and other extra-curricular activities. In addition, Division III playing seasons and class schedules are designed to minimize conflicts between athletics and academics and promote academic success. This is evidenced by MU s overall 3.20 GPA among student-athletes and 145 MAC all-academic honorees in While Division III athletics programs promote a wide range of participation, they don t sacrifice when it comes to competition. In fact, the NCAA sponsors 36 national championships annually at the Division III level. Misericordia has enjoyed its share of success since joining the Division III ranks in MU has captured 40 conference championships and sent 18 teams to the NCAA Championships. The women s soccer team became the first team to advance to the Division III Final Four (2012). In addition, several individual efforts have helped put Misericordia on the national map: Eric Sweeney, swimming: NCAA Division III champion. Willie Chandler, basketball: Second-leading scorer in D-III history. Heather Dougherty, swimming: School s first NCAA All-American. Sam Helmstetter, women s soccer, two-time All-American. Michelle Myers, volleyball: Led D-III in blocks per game. Amy Bower, cross country: All-American. Frank Redmond, track & field: MU s first track & field All-American. Kim Daniel, field hockey: Seventh all-time in career assists. Mike Murphy, baseball: Division III record for hits in a game. Founded in 1924, Misericordia is a liberal arts based, co-educational Catholic institution serving both residential and commuting students. Sponsored by the Religious Sisters of Mercy, MU is one of 18 Mercy institutions in the United States and welcomes individuals from all faiths and offers a variety of liberal arts and professional programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels. MU offers 32 majors in three academic colleges: Arts and Sciences; Health Sciences; and Professional Studies and Social Sciences. The University is dedicated to the values of the Sisters of Mercy: mercy, service, justice and hospitality. These values are found throughout the University, from programs of study to service projects. The hallmark of MU is a dedicated faculty and a high-quality core liberal arts and sciences curriculum. With 2,812 students, Misericordia offers the benefits of a small university with the scope of a larger institution. Small class size ensures personalized attention and a 12:1 student/faculty ratio allows students and faculty to truly know one another. Located in Dallas, PA, MU s 123-acre campus has a suburban atmosphere and is only nine miles from Wilkes-Barre and two hours from New York City and Philadelphia.

4 JIM RICARDO Head Coach Jim Ricardo is in his 11th season as head men s lacrosse coach at Misericordia University. Ricardo led the Cougars to an 11-5 record in 2012, marking the second consecutive year that the squad posted a program-best finish. The 2012 team also qualified for the ECAC Championships for the first time in history. Before making the transition to the MAC in 2009, Ricardo led the Cougars to the Pennsylvannia Athletic Conference playoffs three times in his first six seasons. Ricardo coached the United States U19 team to the silver medal at the 2010 FIL Festival in Manchester, England. A graduate of Cortland State University, he previously served as an assistant coach at Virginia Wesleyan College. During his collegiate playing career, he helped Cortland to a berth in the NCAA Championships. Prior to that, he was a member of two national championship teams at Herkimer Community College where the team set a national record with 59 consecutive wins. In addition to his coaching duties, Ricardo serves as the athletic equipment manager at Misericordia. JOHN HOEFFLER Graduate Assistant John Hoeffler is entering his first season with the Misericordia University men s lacrosse program as a graduate assistant coach. Hoeffler spent the past year as head coach of the Chiefs High School Lacrosse program in Orland Park, IL. During his time there, he lead the program to the best record in its history (18-3) and reached the state semifinals. Nine of his players were selected all-conference and one was selected all-state. As a player, Hoeffler was a four-year starting midfielder at MAC-rival Widener, winning conference titles in 2008, 2010 and He earned first-team all-conference honors as a senior and finished his career with 100 points. MU ATHLETIC FACILITIES The athletic facilities at Misericordia University recently underwent major renovations which provide MU s studentathletes with some of the finest competition venues in the region. The facilities - all located on campus - include the Anderson Center, Mangelsdorf Field at the Anderson Outdoor Athletic Complex, Tambur Field, Metz Field House, McGeehan Field, Anderson Softball Field and six tennis courts. Since 1993, the Anderson Center has provided a home for the Cougars basketball, volleyball and swim teams. The Anderson Center features a six-lane swimming pool, indoor track, racquetball courts, fitness center and an aerobic/dance studio. The building attracts more than 75,000 visitors annually for recreational uses. Mangelsdorf Field at the Anderson Outdoor Athletic Complex was constructed in 2002 and serves as a home for the football, soccer, field hockey, lacrosse and track & field programs. The Anderson Complex features a synthetic grass field and a sixlane synthetic track, with an eight-lane straightaway, which allow MU s student-athletes to compete even when weather conditions are less than ideal. The Misericordia softball team has called Anderson Field home since Named for the late Dr. Robert S. and Geraldine Ruth Daley Anderson, the Anderson Sports-Health Center, Anderson Outdoor Athletic Complex and Anderson Field are all tributes to their commitment to Misericordia University. Mangelsdorf Field honors the dedication of Jack and Dorothy Mangelsdorf to MU and the region. The Misericordia tennis complex opened in 2004 as part of a gift by the M & T Foundation. Tambur Field, honoring the Robert Tambur family, will provide a new home for the MU baseball team beginning with the 2013 season. McGeehan Field, named in honor of Mary Ellen McGeehan 46, will open in 2012 and provides a second artificial grass venue for the MU field hockey, soccer and lacrosse teams. In addition, the John & Mary Metz Fieldhouse was constructed in 2012 and will provide meeting and locker room space for the MU football, soccer, field hockey, track & field, baseball and lacrosse teams. The 21,750 square-foot facility is named for long time board of trustee member John Metz and his wife and recognizes their contributions to the MU community. A Cranford, NJ native, Hoeffler helped start the first lacrosse team in the history of his high school, leading the state in scoring as a junior and earning first-team all-state honors as a senior.

5 2013 Season Preview Despite enjoying the best season in school history a year ago, the Misericordia University men s lacrosse team believes it has some unfinished business in The Cougars established a school record for wins in a season (11-5) and the longest win streak in school history (10 games) eventually led MU to its first ECAC Tournament berth. However, several fourth period meltdowns, including one in the ECAC Tournament, have the Cougars focusing on playing 60 minutes this season. Junior Tyler Hutchison also returns on defense. Freshman Eric Dittmeier is expected to start on defense while classmate Michael Farinaro is pushing for time. Freshman Oscar Briceno has been impressive during the pre-season on defense and LSM and freshman Maxim Kellun adds depth on defense. Junior Matt Martins, a Division I transfer, will provide quality depth when he s healthy and Josh Shanker will serve as the back-up in goal. We let some games get away from us last year, said veteran head coach Jim Ricardo. We want to eliminate those late-game miscues this year and turn those heartbreaking losses into wins. Our primary focus this season is to finish every game strong. With six starters returning, Ricardo and the Cougars have their sights set on a Freedom Conference tournament berth. Our goal is to compete for a Freedom Championship, said Ricardo. With the experience we have on our roster, that is a realistic goal. Led by sophomore goalie Patrick Johnson, the MU defense is expected to be the strength of the Cougars, especially in the early-going. Johnson is one of five returning starters on defense after setting school records for wins (11) and goals against average (6.98) as a freshman. Johnson is the backbone of our defense, said Ricardo. He continues to get better and our players have tremendous faith in his abilities which allows us to different things on defense. Matt Gonzalez The Cougars return three starters in midfield: Matt Gonzalez, Nick Santillo and Trevor Bodnar. Gonzalez is healthy after missing much of last season with an injury, said Ricardo. Santillo is a big, strong kid with a hard shot and Bodnar has great speed and a good shot on the run. Freshman Mason Quickel is expected to see time in the midfield. He will make an immediate impact, said Ricardo. He has terrific field vision and can score and pass. Juniors Andrew Bath, Paul Stewart, Jeff Zeoli and Jack Stang all provide experience in the midfield. Bath and Stewart both possess hard shots, said Ricardo. We are counting on them to be able to finish. Zeoli is working hard on becoming a twoway midfielder and Stang is the fastest guy on the team. He provides us some breakaway speed. Four players who saw time as starters a year ago return at attack, including J.R. Lauri, Kyle Calabro, Sean McGuigan and Josh Schwartz. Other returnees on defense include Drew Abatangelo, Pete Paccione, Jared Hunt, Jeff Antonucci and Sean Forsyth. Abatangelo, a senior, was a second-team All- Freedom selection a year ago. He has a great work ethic, said Ricardo. He is one of our team captains and he leads by example. Paccione is a four-year starter who has battled injuries throughout his career. Pete has started every season, but he s missed games every year because of injury, said Ricardo. Hopefully, he can stay healthy and on the field for his senior season. Hunt will handle the long stick midfielder duties while Antonucci and Forsyth both return as defensive midfielders. Hunt is one of the best athletes on the team, said Ricardo. Antonucci and Forsyth provide with plenty of experience on the defensive end. Sean McGuigan McGuigan had 38 goals a year ago, the secondhighest single-season total in school history. McGuigan is a real scoring threat while Lauri and Schwartz both have good quickness and field vision, said Ricardo. Calabro, a senior, will serve as a team captain. He has looked terrific in the pre-season, said Ricardo. His work ethic is second to none. Freshman Adam Lenhard is expected to make an immediate impact at attack and will likely be in the starting line-up. The Cougars open the season with a pair of games in Texas before returning to Mangelsdorf Field for a three-game home stand. Misericordia will open its Freedom Conference schedule at FDU- Florham, April 6.
