2 MISERICORDIA UNIVERSITY IS D-III Misericordia University is a member of the NCAA Division III. The largest of the NCAA s three divisions, Division III promotes a well-rounded approach to intercollegiate athletics participation. While Division III is best known by some for what it doesn t offer athletics scholarships it has plenty to offer. Knowing that Division III student-athletes play for the love of the game, the D-III experience is structured to help participants develop fully as students, athletes and citizens. Athletics participation at many of the 442 institutions that comprise Division III allows for student-athletes to succeed in the classroom and in athletics. That certainly is the case at Misericordia as student-athletes are often active in student government, residence life and other extracurricular activities. In addition, Division III playing seasons and class schedules are designed to minimize conflicts between athletics and academics and promote academic success. This is evidenced by MU s overall 3.24 GPA among studentathletes and 143 MAC all-academic honorees in While Division III athletics programs promote a wide range of participation, they don t sacrifice when it comes to competition. In fact, the NCAA sponsors 36 national championships annually at the Division III level. Misericordia has enjoyed its share of success since joining the Division III ranks in MU has captured 38 conference championships and sent 16 teams to the NCAA Championships. In addition, several individual efforts have helped put Misericordia on the national map: Eric Sweeney, swimming: NCAA Division III champion. Willie Chandler, basketball: Second leading scorer in NCAA Division III history. Heather Dougherty, swimming: School s first NCAA All-American. Michelle Myers, volleyball: Led NCAA Division III in blocks per game. Amy Bower, cross country: All-American; didn t run competitively until college. Frank Redmond, track & field: MU s first track & field All-American. Kim Daniel, field hockey: Seventh all-time in NCAA Division III in career assists. Mike Murphy, baseball: Division III record for hits in a game. MU offers 32 majors in three academic colleges: Arts and Sciences; Health Sciences; and Professional Studies and Social Sciences. The University is dedicated to the values of the Sisters of Mercy: mercy, service, justice and hospitality. These values are found throughout the University, from programs of study to service projects. The hallmark of MU is a dedicated faculty and a high-quality core liberal arts and sciences curriculum. With 2,830 students, Misericordia offers the benefits of a small university with the scope of a larger institution. Small class size ensures personalized attention and a 12:1 student/ faculty ratio allows students and faculty to truly know one another. Located in Dallas, PA, MU s 123-acre campus has a suburban atmosphere and is only nine miles from Wilkes-Barre and two hours from New York City and Philadelphia. ATHLETICS FACILITIES The athletics facilities at Misericordia University recently underwent major renovations which provide MU s studentathletes with some of the finest competition venues in the region. The facilities - all located on campus - include the Anderson Center, Mangelsdorf Field at the Anderson Outdoor Athletics Complex, Tambur Field, Metz Field House, McGeehan Field, Anderson Softball Field and six tennis courts. Since 1993, the Anderson Center has provided a home for the Cougars basketball, volleyball and swim teams. The Anderson Center features a six-lane swimming pool, indoor track, racquetball courts, fitness center and an aerobic/ dance studio. The building attracts more than 75,000 visitors annually for recreational uses. Mangelsdorf Field at the Anderson Athletic Complex was constructed in 2002 and serves as a home for the footbal, soccer, field hockey, lacrosse and track & field programs. The Anderson Complex features a synthetic grass field and a six-lane synthetic track, with an eight-lane straightaway, which allow MU s student-athletes to compete even when weather conditions are less than ideal. The Misericordia softball team has called Anderson Field home since Named for the late Dr. Robert S. and Geraldine Ruth Daley Anderson, the Anderson Sports-Health Center, Anderson Athletic Complex and Anderson Fields are all tributes to their commitment to Misericordia University. Mangelsdorf Field honors the dedication of Jack and Dorothy Mangelsdorf to MU and the region. The Misericordia tennis complex opened in 2004 as part of a gift by the M & T Foundation. Tambur Field, honoring the Robert Tambur family, was constructed in 2012 and will provide a new home for the MU baseball team. McGeehan Field, named in honor of Mary Ellen McGeehan 46, will open in 2012 and provides a second artificial grass venue for the MU field hockey, soccer and lacrosse teams. In addition, the John & Mary Metz Fieldhouse was constructed in 2012 and will provide meeting and locker room space for the MU football, soccer, field hockey, track & field, baseball and lacrosse teams. 5 With nine starters and 18 letter-winners returning from a team that advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Championships a year ago, expectations are high for the Misericordia University women s soccer team in Our goal this year is to win the Freedom Conference championship and make a deep run in the NCAA Tournament, said veteran MU head coach Mark Stauffer. We learned last year by playing three of the Final Four teams and beating one of them that we can play with anyone in the country. The senior quartet of Sam Helmstetter, Laura Roney, Bridget Fortier and Nicolette Hensel will serve as team captains. We have plenty of leadership, said Stauffer. There are a lot of teachers on the field and our senior captains are a big part of that. There is constant coaching and communication taking place between the veteran players and the rookies. That has really helped with our learning curve and strengthening team chemistry. Helmstetter and Roney are two of the most prolific scorers in Misericordia history as both rank among the top 10 in the all-time points list. Helmstetter is the returning Freedom Conference Player of the Year and was a second-team All-American a year ago. She tied for the team lead with 31 points and had a team-high 11 goals. Roney was an All-Region selection and tied Helmstetter for the team scoring lead with 31 points. Helmstetter and Roney have been impact players for us since their freshmen season, said Stauffer. They have both been all-conference and all-region players throughout their careers. They combined for more than 60 points last year and we expect them to produce some positive numbers this season as well. Freshman Meghan Antrim will provide immediate depth at forward while sophomore Erin Baker and freshman Alyssa Manno could also see time while transfer Holli Pierce will see time in a target forward role. In the midfield, junior Alyssa Mocion, a returning First- Team All-Freedom selection, will serve as MU s attacking center-mid. She ll be joined by another returning first-team all-conference player in sophomore Erin Roberts, who will handle the holding center-mid duties Season Preview Erin McGreal Bridget Fortier Mocion was the Freedom Rookie of the Year in 2010 while Roberts earned the same award in Freshman Lindsay Usarzewicz will see time at center midfield while sophomore Erin McGreal, an All-Freedom performer a year ago, will be joined by Megan Lannigan, Ashley DiPippa and Emily Esposito on the flanks. Freshman Courtney Cecco and sophomore Lindsay Hoover will add depth in the midfield. In the defensive third, Fortier and Nicolette Ruffler will anchor the middle of the back four while rookie Jessica Buffa is doing a great job of learning MU s defensive scheme and provides depth along with Kim Gottshall and Danielle Hesler. Hensel, a four-year starter, returns on the outside while Jackie Wheatley, Caitlyn Boyle, Devin Simpson, Megan Kishbaugh and Tina Colatriano are all vying for time. We are extremely deep at the wing back position, said Stauffer. This is creating a great training environment. In goal, Caitlin Sweeney returns after starting in the national tournament a year ago while freshman Maureen Ciccosanti and junior Kelly Mott are challenging for the starting role. In addition to returnees, the roster features a talented group of newcomers. We brought in a solid recruiting class, said Stauffer. We have some new players who are challenging the veterans for playing time. That competition will make us deeper and better prepared for the post-season. As usual, the Cougars will face a tough nonconference schedule that includes dates with national powers Messiah and Ithaca, as they prepare for their Freedom Conference slate. We always try to play the best competition, said Stauffer. We want to peak for our conference schedule and earn the top seed for the Freedom Championships and a make a deep run in the national tournament. The best thing about this veteran group is that they control their own destiny, said Stauffer. We don t have to worry about how well other teams play against us. If we play to our ability, the results will be positive.
